Hi all -

I am not a luthier, but I have a friend who regularly comes into possession of sinker cypress logs. He has his own saw mill equipment, and I was wondering if there was a place for this type of wood in a uke. If so, there might be some interesting possibilities here.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Many species get called "cypress." If your friend would like to send me a nice, quartersawn billet of whatever it is that he's got, I'll gladly evaluate it.

I'd say yes, especially if it's old growth. Post pics when available. Bald cypress is a close relative of coast redwood.

I'd say no, especially if it is Southern Cypress, like in Louisiana.
I built a guitar from it, the tone was nothing to write home about.
There is other much better wood to spend your time on.

It is from Louisiana, so that seems to be the answer. I just thought it might be interesting if it worked out. Thanks everyone.

You could get it, if available, for other use. It is great for lots of projects, just a bit dead for instruments.

greenie44,
I recently built a tenor with sinker cypress and Nic. rosewood, has a very nice tone, similiar to cedar.
