End Graft Grain Direction?

Because wood expands and contracts across the grain much more than with the grain, it seems logical that and end graft grain runs the same as the sides. I have seen just the opposite. Have you seen an actual problem caused by end graft running 90 degrees to the sides? Maybe causing the top or back to lift?

Here is the first end graft I have made. (I played it safe with direction) I did use some ebony strips. Also left a pencil mark for top alignment.
 
What ever looks good to you. I don't think there's much expansion going on with the whole back side glued to the tail block.
When I use stripey grain wood, I like to take a side or back cut-off and cut it at 45deg to the grain direction. Then flip one side over and glue together to get a V grain pattern or herringbone look. Nice way to get a subtle decoration while using up the wood.
 
I only do end grafts if the sides are too short...or the butt joint ain't good enough ;)..but that's just me.
