Kit or from scratch?
It may depend upon your circumstances. My first five ukes were scratch built, as I was using a friend's workshop. Then there was a break of about three years, and when I decided to make another uke, I no longer had use of a workshop. I bought a StewMac soprano kit and assembled it in my kitchen, using hand tools only. I was very impressed with the kit, and would definitely recommend it.
Building from scratch is much more demanding, but also more satisfying.
