Poor baby's had a rough go! But... they still are about as sweet a uke as you'll ever play.

a little over, is that what it's worth? Yes, you did good.

If you ever want to refinish it yourself, it's easy to do (hard to do super well, but if you goal is for you and for a player, it's a nice touch).

Don't really think I'd ever refinish it...might not look beautiful, but it sounds beautiful! And...they're only original once.

I've had this for about a year and just put new Martin M600's on it. If your strings are more than a year old change them! You won't believe how much difference it makes!!! The old ones were starting to get little notches in them where the frets are, but I figured it was time any way and it was!

Also, disassembled the tuners and cleaned them, hope they hold, there are no washers or anything. I suppose you could put one between the back piece and the headstock, if it was thin and it would have to be flexible, because there is a taper or chamfer where they join.

reposted pic's, since the original ones don't show up anymore...

A set of Grover 4's will do wonders to that uke. Smooth as butter, and they don't dig into the back of the headstock. Will increase your enjoyment of that uke 2 fold.

"Also, disassembled the tuners and cleaned them, hope they hold, there are no washers or anything. I suppose you could put one between the back piece and the headstock"

Often times people will put a washer in-between the barrel of the tuner and the headstock if the screw starts to bottom-out and they can't get sufficient tension. The majority of the time a simple fix is to just shorten the screw. You only need shorten the screw the same amount as the thickness of the washer you might have otherwise installed. You can easily cut the screw with a Dremel tool using the little cut-off wheel, or clamp in a vise and use a file, or if you have a few minutes- worry it away on 150 grit sandpaper. After cutting, slightly bevel or smooth-over the cut end to ensure the threads will easily start into the string post.

Now, if the string post is bottoming out against the inside channel of the button, you can shorten that the same way. But typically, a shorter screw will do the trick!

thanks for the comments, guys, Skinny, are the Grovers drop in? Don't want to modify the headstock.

thanks for the comments, guys, Skinny, are the Grovers drop in? Don't want to modify the headstock.

Very slight hole enlargement required, but it doesn't hurt anything to upgrade to something that actually functions well. Million dollar Stradivarius violins who's tuners have been plugged and re-bushed many times, never hurt their value.!!

The whole point is, the new tuners are not digging into the back of the headstock anymore, since the friction point is internal to the tuner. Martin uses Grover 4's now, and have used Grover products for the last 70 years or so. In my opinion, These Style O's and 1's are not rare, and if you play the uke often, it's a huge upgrade. I had a Luthier over at Eldery Instruments install mine.. So their you have it !!
