Does this mean we can expect 99 bonuses from Cloverdale? Seriously, dude, you gotta learn to stop with the numbers. (Or not. Not is good.)

Great theme! I've been hard at work and sitting out a bunch of Seasons lately but I'm hoping to show up this week.

And you said midnight Saturday in your vid but surely you meant midnight Sunday September 15th.

This is my entry a song that popped on my radar when seeing the theme . Taking you back to the 80's with this song, I won't let you down, by PHD. I've always liked this song, It was sung by Jim Diamond. I won't let you down assumes someone was let down before, so in my book it fits this theme.

Yah, the theme for this season is really resonating with me BIG TIME -- gonna try really hard to get something in for this one.

Btw, really sorry to hear about the disappointment in your Outdoor Uke...believe me, my friend, I completely get it/understand...I've actually had a few "heartbreak ukes" myself.

here is my entry - I'M NOT ANGRY I'M JUST DISAPPOINTED

this is one of what i call my punk uke therapy homemade songs/songlets/song-type-things.

i wrote it just about a minute ago well as many minutes as it took to write it and play it and record it.

it's dedicated to a certain person, maybe some certain people, if that person or those people hear it maybe they'll know it's about them, maybe not, maybe they are oblivious – you know how these things are.

i am playing this on my FAKELELE. i “made” my fakelele in anticipation of getting my new BARITONE uke, but there has been a delay in getting the baritone uke delivered (that is not the disappointment described in this song!) so i am continuing playing the fakelele til the baritone uke comes.

(this could be a whole new song, based on the “i'm not the pheasant plucker i'm the pheasant plucker's son” tongue twister – all together now - “i'm not the baritone ukelele, i'm the baritone uklele's fakelele, and i'm only playing baritone fakelele til the proper baritone comes”)

the fakelele pretend baritone ukelele is my classical guitar with the lowest sounding 2 strings tied off with some material to mute them (if you care to stay with the video until the end i show this amazing bit of engineering) so i fully appreciate it may not count for the contest at all, it depends how charitable ukeeku feels to my baritone-less plight. if it can't be an entry please let it be a bonus or a non-entry or just a thing.

i'm not angry i'm just disappointed
i'm not mad, you just let yourself down
you just let yourself down
you just let yourself down
do you care
do you care
do you care
do you even know what you've done
what you've done
what you've done
is unforgivable

ukeeku - i loved your intro vid! and the prize is very generous - well it seems very generous to those of us who haven't met an outdoor ukelele personally yet and still think it's a great idea and very well might be fabulous and would really like to win one!

thank you myrna! i hope i do love my baritone! i love the sound when i hear other people play one, but i hesitated about getting one because of the whole CHORDS THING. i used to play guitar a BIT, so the chord shapes are not completely alien, but i haven't played guitar in ages, and for over a year now i've only been playing soprano or tenor uke, so now the phrase "c-chord" summons up the regular ukelele chord shape in my mind and in my fingers. and now for baritone that chord shape is the g-chord. and it all hurts my tiny brain! so my fakelele is a way to experience that mental confusion in advance of the baritone arriving!

more to the point - LOVE your vid! love your UKE!

The Scottish and the Irish are famous for writing songs about missing the "auld country" Growing up in Scotland the first thing that is instilled into you that to make anything of yourself you have to leave your homeland. That is why you have so many Scots and Irish abroad, and even when they are far away they have this aching nostalgia and longing, and perhaps even heartbreak regarding their homeland. It is sad that the country you are born in can not provide for you, yet you still feel it has shaped and moulded you.

The song is by Dougie MacLean (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmxqjzCxNEE) and made famous by Amy MacDonald (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJGQ7_2g4E0)

For me weird is the new normal. The video was put through a cartoon filter and then a Ken Burns filter
to get that imperceptible zooming out effect... other than that the audio was tweeked with a shimmering
chorus and set in a jazz lounge. The apple tree in the background was provided by Apple Corp, the sky
what little there was of it was provided for free by an omniscient being, the chunky fleece sweater was
found in the give away for free basket at the local flee market, the specs were genuine Malcom X Ray Bans,
The designer stubble came curtesy of a broken razor, and Paulo Nutini (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux-lObXl9Sg) did it better
ANd for big productions then there is Celtic Thunder (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0KZjmiL7xs) and Celtic Women (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbBh2IMYhGE)

Hope you won't be disappointed with it as I was.
I've played guitar for over 30 yrs and my first 4 string was a Bari and it sounded in effect to me like a 'small guitar' .

I wanted to learn a new instrument and with it a new sound......I eventually traded it for a soprano and concert........once I got my head around the plink plinking of 'toy' strings and decided yep its actually a lovely sounding instrument back in Feb I haven't looked back.

Its all about personal choice and taste though so good luck with it.

yeah i totally fell in love with my little soprano uke. i was like omg it's so dinky yet it sounds so fabulous! my ex continues to tell me it sounds like an egg-slice, but maybe that's just my playing - IT CAN'T BE MY SOPRANO!!! for a long time i thought ukelele acquisition syndrome, what is THAT all about? i've got my little soprano I DON'T NEED NO OTHER UKE - i'm a one uke woman. but then i got my electric soprano. which is a bag load of rock and roll fun. and then i got a tenor. and a u-bass which might not count because the sound is more bass than u. but i love it and i love how it looks like a bit dropped off my full size bass guitar! and then i was just minding my own business when i tripped over a youtube vid of a baritone uke and i thought oooh i love THAT sound! i still love my little soprano the best, i'm not expecting the baritone to change that, but i think it's nice to basically just have about half a million different ukes in all sizes and shapes and colours lying around the place, so when you decide to play it takes at least half an hour to decide which ONE!

I LOVE all three of my baritones! And I love all my sopranos too (I've lost count). Each is unique and has it's own voice. A one uke woman I ain't. You will adore your bari - looking forward to hearing you play it.
I've been thinking about getting an electric uke. I would love a Ubass but can't really justify it since I already own a stand up bass.

Entry one for me this week. Sorry I missed Bernie's great season but life sometimes gets in the way dagnabit. Eddie Vedder's album Ukulele songs is one of the things that lead to me this instrument late last year. And "Broken Heart" is just one of many gems from that album. I realized after recording it that I had left my mainland tuned to B tuning from working on another song. So apologies if you want to play along you will have to tune down a half.

At the beginning of the summer I broke up with my girlfriend of two years, and two weeks ago my Dad died, so this theme resonates pretty deeply right now. I have a few originals that would fit the bill, but I can't let this week go by without a song from Mr. Doom and Gloom himself, Richard Thompson. Hard to pick just one, but "Withered and Died" (from the first Richard and Linda Thompson album, "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight") was the easiest one to do during my lunch hour.

great song and performance - and... newbies! yay!

I would love a Ubass but can't really justify it since I already own a stand up bass.
ukelele acquisition syndrome - UR DOING IT WRONG! ;) i have the solid body ubass, it's dreamy - solid body or acoustic, it's so super dinky and teeny tiny compared to a regular bass guitar and certainly compared to an upright - i think you need this portable superfun thing. and if you wanna rock out you need that electric uke. i got a clearwater electric soprano it's very - no really i know i say this all the time about everything - but it's VERY ROCK AND ROLL

and just to share with anyone who fancies being shared with - HERE IS MY BARITONE UKE THAT ARRIVED TODAY! :D

Alright, I've been away from the seasons for the last several weeks. Although it wasn't because I was heartbroken or disappointed, you'd never know that from my entry. Some of these old electro-pop songs from the 80's strip down to ukulele quite nicely. Here's Always Something There to Remind Me, in a much less danceable version than the one by Naked Eyes.

Thompson's "End of the Rainbow" is as morbidly depressing as any song I've ever heard. At one RT concert I went to, the promoter had added a second, later show that evening, so they had to get the crowd from the first show out quickly. For the last encore, RT came out with an acoustic guitar and sang "End of the Rainbow". The crowd's mood plummeted like a fall from a cliff, and we all meekly shuffled out the exits.

One time I tried as a songwriting experiment to write a song as utterly depressing as "End of the Rainbow" or Robyn Hitchcock's "Luminous Rose". I keep the results in a lead-lined case.

If you can find it, there is a great version of this song, done in the middle of Personality Crisis, on a live album (http://www.amazon.com/David-Johansen-Group-Live/dp/B0001500VS/ref=sr_1_6?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1378998746&sr=1-6&keywords=david+johansen) by the David Johansen Group from the 70s.

It's a busy week with my uke club starting up but I'll try to post some other Tracy Chapman songs. This one is from my all time favorite album of hers. "Tracy Chapman" is the self-titled debut album by the singer-songwriter, released on April 5, 1988 by Elektra Records

Well, not everyone will agree with the claims made in the song, or its sentiment, but I think we'll all agree it's a song of disappointment.

This is the only atheist country song I know of, on a baritone tuned in A.

Now I just need to see if I can get down a version of "Ain't No Sunshine" . . .

A few thoughts on the early entries this season: Heartbreak Hostel

Wim - I Won’t let you Down
I think you’re getting better all the time, pal. Thanks for the intro to this tune, too.

Ukelites - Unchain My Heart
Ahhhh! Our favorite Soul Duo strikes to the heart, again!
You kids can swing! You know that right? Appropriately Mod in fashion, too, of course.

Uncle Elvis Hindquarters - Baybee U Got What I Needs
I Loves me this songifying!!
Extra points for the Joe Strummer doo.
Your heart was the only thing dat went down South?

Rexasaur - Please Come to Boston
Never my favorite song (my problem, not Kenny’s) but better than Terry Jacks’ “Chevy Van” from the same era or (gods help us) Michael Murphey’s “Wildfire”.
Anyway, you have one of those great, better than the original versions here. Well done!

Strums - Walk on By
Now here’s a great GREAT song and very well done it is, too. Great singin’, strummin’, emotin’!

Birds eye view of my Guitaralele with hormone issues - I’m not Angry…
Terrific, song and performance AND Guitar hacking!!!!!

Myrna - Lover Come Back to Me
Pal, you’re wrecking the curve with all this talent, you know.
Another BEAUTIFUL video.
I always like the flowers in your rooms, too.

Pabrizzer - Purple Shadows
Maybe not Blue Shadows on the Trail but reminds me how much I like hanging out with uker pals around a campfire. Your usual top notch performance, man. Keep ‘em comin’, mmmkay?

Shady - I know the Verse
Another original Casey? You’re going for all the marbles again, right? Congrats on last season! You’re taking off like a rocket here, pal. Great song, too. “Drinkin’ whiskey for my health”!!

WeeGingaYin - Caledonia
Didn’t know this was a Dougie song but this is a wonderful performance and all I’ll ever need to hear to know it’s a great one.

Butterflybandito - Song of 27
Man Eugene, this is heartbreakingly beautiful. Just the ticket. Love Buckner’s stuff and you give it the polish I need like icing on the cake.

no really

the new tv series "wentworth" has just started here in the UK, it's a sort of updated version (i can't quite bring myself to say the word/phrase "re-boot"... oh pook... i said it) of "prisoner cell block H" which ran for about a million years and a gazillion episodes from 1979

if you're familiar with the original show, and the classic song theme tune which actually made it into the charts and onto top of the pops i think - then please do join in, especially on the ooh-eee-ooh bit. if you're not familiar with the show i don't think i can describe it, it was as camp as a row of tents and just utterly fabulous

and the rain falls down
but the sun and rain are prisoners too
when morning comes around

last night I dreamed we were together
sharing all the love we'd known
'til I had to face the nightmare
of waking up alone

on the inside the roses grow - OOH-EEE-OOH
they don't mind the stoney ground
but the roses here are prisoners too
when morning comes around

I wish he could again

Why the heck not? My initial thought was to run from the No Sunshine pile on, but then a great thing happened (for me, at least). I decided to at least look up the lyrics, and, less than 15 minutes later, this came out.

I should not promote this in any way - at the end of my series of "No"s, it is painfully obvious that I also don't know where I am on a scale, but I try to bring it back. But this is an example of exactly what discovering the uke has done for me. After decades of playing guitar, I could not master it enough to express my deep love of music. But, magically, the uke made that possible. I am not even within shouting distance of a virtuosity, but being able to merge with music is one of the great joys of my life.

As a colleague here says, "passionately untalented", but with the emphasis on passion.

And with that long digression, I give you yet another version of the weather report . . .

Here is my entry for this week. Traditional song is full of songs about heartache and disappointment. There's unfaithful lovers, women left in the lurch - usually with a baby, cuckolded husbands, lovers going away and dying. You name it, there's a folk song about it.

Anyway this one deals with a sailors' superstition that if a ship has someone who has done wrong on board, it will run into trouble and to get out of trouble the wrongdoer has to be found and thrown overboard. It's a sad story with a rather lovely melody - as is often the case with English folk song.

The whole point of the Seasons contests... the whole reason we kept them going after the first bunch... was so that we could have a medium to hold our own contests, without having people tell us how to run them.
Contests had been ruined by people complaining about who won, the judging criteria, complaining that their choice didn't win, making suggestions - and demands! - about how other people's contests should be run, and a whole lot of other nonsense.

The core principle of the Seasons contests is that they are OUR contests, run OUR way. The host makes the rules. ALL the rules.
Any "rules" we do have are merely suggestions and guidelines... or should be.

Can we try to keep that in mind?

Heartbreak and disappointment first hand today ): We went to our local zoo (animal park). It's small and the care of the care of the animals, while no great, is usually okay. Yet still sad. But today I saw something I don't think I was meant to see. You see, I don't go anywhere without a uke and today was no different. So while strolling through the park I was playing for the animals. The parrots just loved it and were dancing etc. There were these tiny monkeys that were enthralled by the music and would chatter whenever I would stop. It was cute! But....as I walked along I notice a building with the door open and there were obvious parrot noises coming from within. Well, I love parrots, had one for 20 years. I now vehemently believe they should NOT be owned. It's cruel! When I walked through the door there was a room full of animals that were obviously pets at one time and abandoned here. There were chinchillas, many parrots, ferrets, a baby pig (in a dog kennel). The place was filthy, there was no food or water, the ferret cage was full of spider webs! I stood in that room and played for them! They screamed when I left and now I'm brokenhearted. I don't know the story of the place so I can't really pass judgement. They are probably doing the best for these creatures that someone else has abandoned. I don't know. But, I know, I know, I know.......

The core principle of the Seasons contests is that they are OUR contests, run OUR way. The host makes the rules. ALL the rules.
Any "rules" we do have are merely suggestions and guidelines... or should be.

Can we try to keep that in mind?

Friends, I have to agree, here. Personally, for me, I have REALLY (so badly!) wanted to host a Seasons (I even have a couple -- a few ideas, actually -- just ask Ginny!), but I have been scared to make the commitment as I know that I wouldn't be able to set aside enough time to watch -- and in addition -- make comments for each entry. Of course, that's assuming that I had a Season where I had several entries. :-)

Yet, I do also agree, that it's very nice, courteous, and respectful when a host acknowledges an entry by a little comment. I just hesitate about making it a steadfast "rule." I also feel concerned that if we have too many rules, it might keep others from participating and/or volunteering to be a host in the Seasons.

Admittedly, I am still somewhat of a newcomer to all of this; I am not at all well-versed on the rules and or suggestions for the Seasons. But, what it all boils down to for me about the Seasons is simply this:

I just love to watch people's entries -- I learn a lot, they're entertaining, they make my day brighter (and that's important when you live in the PNW, especially during rainy season! ;-)

Edit: Also wanted to say that I think it's also WONDERFUL when fellow Seasonsistas comment on my entries -- and when we comment on one another's entries -- that to me -- is VERY special! :-) I also learn a lot this way -- and I love to support my UU friends as well!

I know I did a cruddy job singin' this with many mistakes but I was just so sad about it ):

That was a sad story. The emotion really shone through in your playing. Sometimes of course, pets are abandoned because their owners have died, though from what you report it's unlikely that many ended up in your zoo in this way. Hopefully a local SPCA is aware of the situation.

I think next time I am going to just choose a song and have everyone cover that one song. that would be fun.

Isn't that what you did this week?

no seriously - it would be a great idea, i think!

i actually thought you might do the "neighbours" theme tune! but then i put a new set of batteries in my brain and realised it's not sad is it? good neighbours becoming good friends is a HAPPY thing, right?

The Smiths: Please Please Please (Let Me Get What I Want This Time)
love this. LOVE the smiths. love this song

i have only been here on UU a nanosecond, but i just wanna say, agreeing with Hochapeafarm, i always think hosting must be a shed load of work, and that's just the whole setting up of the contest and doing the playlists and judging and wotnot, before you even factor in commenting on everyone's entries. what is great is that everyone makes comments, not just the host, in fact this season if no one had pointed out that the host was not commenting, i wouldn't have registered the fact because there is such a lively and friendly and funny load of banter and encouragement and detailed and informative feedback going on from everyone. but then again i am new and i didn't know about the rules saying the host should comment on everyone... i'll just shut up now, but not before i say UU is great and everyone here is so encouraging and group hug and feel the love

Here is mine
love this!

you know, i used to think this song meant if you didn't HAVE a woman, you wouldn't cry. i know. :uhoh:

I think it's just some form of decency to try and comment on all entries. Yes, it can be a lot of work, but I do believe that's a part of it. Everybody makes an effort to enter, acknowledge that effort with a small comment. That's all there is to it.
By the way UncleElvis, who won Season 50?

This is exactly my point.

You think it's decency to comment on it. That's fine.
In your week, you can comment on all the entries.

In other people's weeks, all due respect, you don't get to impose that on them.

Heartbreaking for sure. I am glad you can get some catharsis from putting those feelings to music. We lost our two beloved dogs to cancer in the last year. The first was last summer and we lost the second almost a year to the day we lost the first. Heart wrenching to go though but even more was the search in shelters and rescue organizations to find two more companions that were just right for us. Reading the stories from so many lost, abandoned or god forbid abused dogs was a rough process to be sure. We wish we could help more but at least we have two lovely and sweet souls with us now that remind us day to be gentle, patient and kind to those around us.

I'm now working on redoing Ms. Patsy Cline's "Crazy" into "Comment"... and that song, "You don't send me flowers....any more..." Hmmm, possibilities perhaps.

FWIW, I'm neutral on how the seasons are run or who runs them. I'm a newbie and am more than happy not to have an opinion on SOTU, just as long as we keep having them. For me, this is fun times a gazillion. I'm so glad I took the plunge a few weeks ago and tried it.

the new tv series "wentworth" has just started here in the UK, it's a sort of updated version (i can't quite bring myself to say the word/phrase "re-boot"... oh pook... i said it) of "prisoner cell block H" which ran for about a million years and a gazillion episodes from 1979.

Wow, interesting stuff going on here today. I don't care to get involved in the drama (had enough of that today, but that's another story). I just want to point out, as someone who has participated in the Seasons since day one, that it might be a fun to go back and research the progression. I can tell you that there never has been any rules. There have been standards and preferences but never any rules (except any that might be put forth by the host).

For instance, did you know........
- When the Seasons started there was no such thing as a bonus video, only one entry per participant.
- The hosts did not always comment on each entry as the week went along, they quite often even stayed out of the general discussion, only submitting a video with their comments for each player at the end of the week.
- The hosts comments were (in the first six seasons) not always positive, they were constructive though. It was a real contest and the stakes were high and the competition was friendly but tough.

I only bring this all up to illustrate that the Seasons began as something a bit different than what they are today, and that any changes that have occurred have been made by a particular host during their particular season. They were able to make those changes (for instance, allow bonuses, pull a winner from a hat, comment on all videos or not) because they were the host for that week it was their prerogative. If I were to host next week and do a "throw back week" by not allowing bonuses and only commenting on the participants' videos in an end of the week diatribe, I could do just that, though it may not make many seasonistas very happy.

One thing that has never changed is that the Seasons have always been a place where anyone can jump in at anytime and have a great time sharing music with fellow passionate ukulele players, and have the chance to host a season with any theme they chose and run that week as they see fit (which sometimes is dictated by any time demands they might have in other areas of their lives). And of course every seasonista may choose to not participate in any season for any reason.

Well, looks like I got involved in the drama. My wife needs to use the computer now. Let's get back to having fun.

as being a participant from week one, and in every one since, except for the 2 i hosted,
this is about having fun, learning new songs, watching other players grow, enter,

comments are great, but not the end all...post on facebook, post on 'links and videos' if you desire the comments (i do!)
but, the process of finding a new song , the entering, the learning, the challenge, the playing ....IS the reward!
remember, this is supposed to be fun! and .....silly!

Thanks for a great excuse to do so Ukeeku.

I'm very late to this party, as I've been insanely busy all week; chaperoning a group of (small-town mid-Western) American students on a study tour of London. Lovely set of kids, but as a group, lovely like a new-born baby - totally exhausting at the same time. I've been on the go from 7am to 10pm every day. I've only managed to catch two entries that whole time.

I've come back to find a lot of my friends here very unhappy for one reason or another. Some unhappy with the host and the others unhappy that the first group's unhappiness is spoiling the atmosphere.

So for example in what for convenience I'll term the blue corner, Michael & Saskia (wetigers) are using terms like 'decency', 'effort', 'acknowledgement' in their intervention (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?85525-Season-82-Heartbreak-Disappointment-Week&p=1382295#post1382295). Tootler, Berni, Fil, GinnyT11 have all made similar points about what they expect from their host.

Meanwhile over in the red corner, we find real anxiety that the atmosphere/integrity of the Seasons is being damaged. We find terms like 'bickering' 'nonsense', 'damaging', 'great entries', 'why can't we just get back to having fun?' 'Drama, what drama?' etc.

Ukuleledaddy's intervention (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?85525-Season-82-Heartbreak-Disappointment-Week&p=1382602#post1382602) offers us a really useful history of the early history of the seasons (I first showed up just about 53 weeks ago, in Season 29, so this was very useful for me to learn).

Nonetheless I think we need to recognise that we have have two different sets of concerns being raised here and that until we recognise this we won't be able to draw a line and move on.

In what follows, I'm only going to comment on a couple of the comments. I'm not commenting on Ukeeku's hosting of the Season.

To begin with a POI:

[snip] I always think hosting must be a shed load of work, and that's just the whole setting up of the contest and doing the playlists and judging [snip]

(It is indeed a lot of work and hats off to anyone who volunteers to host. However..) Winners are being drawn out of a hat this week - which is totally host's prerogative of course - but that does mean there's actually no judging taking place this Season.

I want to turn now to a detailed deconstruction of one particular intervention from the red corner, one that has gained a lot of positive comments in support. In what follows, I'm not hammering UncleElvis over the head for the sake of it. His concerns are real and his anxieties genuine. It's just that they're preventing him from expressing them clearly.

The whole point of the Seasons contests... the whole reason we kept them going after the first bunch... was so that we could have a medium to hold our own contests, without having people tell us how to run them.

Any "rules" we do have are merely suggestions and guidelines... or should be.

Can we try to keep that in mind?

This is a very confused argument, but that confusion is itself indicative of the anxiety that the criticism of the host's performance this season has engendered.

In para 1, who are these 'people' and who are 'us'?

As to para 2, it is not at all clear as to how it is that calls for the host of a Season to respect long-established custom and practice* in the running of a Seasons contest is either a) demanding, b) nonsense, or c) likely to ruin Seasons' contests in general.

*I accept absolutely UkuleleDaddy's account (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?85525-Season-82-Heartbreak-Disappointment-Week&p=1382602#post1382602) of the early Seasons, but equally, it's fair to say that as the Seasons have rolled on, custom & practice has also evolved.

The majority of this second paragraph is any case irrelevant to the matter at hand. No-one in this thread has complained about who won, the judging criteria, or about whose choice won (if in fact that's any different from 'about who won').

As to criticism of other participants making suggestions and demands, this part of the argument simply falls down: The "We" "our" "us", of paras 1 & 3 suddenly gives way to the non sequitur of "The host makes the rules. ALL the rules". This is a red herring. Of course, the host draws up the rubric for their Season (multi-tracking or no multi-tracking, how the judging will be conducted, bonus/no-bonus tracks, no of entries etc, etc, etc). No-one in the blue corner AFAIK has disputed this. Their argument would be that if the Seasons are "our" contests, then "we, the Seasonistas" have the right to participate in their governance. They can't be "our contests" and yet not our contests at the same time.

For UncleElvis then to follow-up with

I don't think there was any drama.. I hope not! Just sayin', y'know?
is simply disengenuous. Of course there's been drama: friends have been falling out over each other's conduct during this season. But to suggest that there hasn't been any drama is again indicative of the anxiety created by the criticism of the host's refusal to follow custom and practice: "Be prepared to be disappointed (http://www.ukuleleunderground.com/forum/showthread.php?85525-Season-82-Heartbreak-Disappointment-Week&p=1381945#post1381945)".

Japanese is a very idiomatic language, and the idiom for 'rude' in Japanese is 'other than expected person'. The blue corner is finding Ukeeku's behaviour 'other than expected' (I'd never run across Ukeeku prior to this season, so don't know what to expect). The red corner in its turn is finding the blue corner's comments on his behaviour 'other than expected'. As a consequence, both sides are arguing past each other.

Like the dispute between the two storekeepers, they're arguing from different premises.

I think the debate is an important one, and one worth having, because if we don't have it and settle it, it will just fester. Equally, I think it's probably about time it moved off this thread and into a proper 'constitutional convention' where we can debate about what we expect from the Seasons beyond the aegis of any particular host, and allow this thread to get back to the normal order of the day, watching, learning and commenting on our entries for each Season.

is simply disengenuous.

Perhaps you could put this to music Paul like a pastiche. Ooops - sorry wrong week. ;-)

I'm not in any corner. It's exactly as UncleElvis said: there is no drama.
There is no falling out, gloves have not been removed, people have only stated different opinions. That's it. So let us put this to rest and get on with the show! I'm going to watch a couple of cool entries now!

I was not going to react to the whole discussion, but after reading Red Paul's big post, I thought I would write a Pastiche especially for this season (that was even before UkeyDave suggested it to Paul). The only thing I want to say about this whole stuff is this:
1.) Don't take this song to seriously it is a Pastiche after all.
2.) I love taking part in the seasons no matter the rules, let's keep it that way ;).

http://youtu.be/wH2a4l2_c2E
The abruptness of the end was caused by my wife talking through my recording, that was also a little bit disappointing ;).

:agree: well said Sean hope all this hasn't affected your decision to host Tim all the best from me :-)

Here's a wild and crazy idea. Why not adopt the custom of stating at the start of the week whether you intend to try and post comments or not? That way, expectations are set properly, avoiding disappointment, and those who like comments can factor that into their decision to participate.

I think that this does not make sense at all, other people also comment and I personally appreciate that a lot. In my opinion a host's task is to come up with a theme and maintain/create the playlists. Other then that he can go the extra mile and comment on every video.
By the way I think this thread is getting into a discussion about the seasons within Ukeekee's season maybe a mod can separate the two, so we can have the discussion about the seasons outside of this season?

Huh? I'm talking about adding one sentence to a several paragraph introduction. You know, something that takes about 5 seconds, like indicating whether you allow multitracking or whether the ukulele should be the featured instrument.

It doesn't stop anyone less from commenting, or participating in any way. A simple matter of consideration for potential participants - you know, aloha spirit.

Now THIS? This is drama.

But, to show respect, I'll address points.

Um... there's no anxieties whatsoever. I've simply expressed how I see it... and I thought I was pretty clear.

This is a very confused argument, but that confusion is itself indicative of the anxiety that the criticism of the host's performance this season has engendered.

You not being able to understand it doesn't make it a confused argument, as I'll show.

In para 1, who are these 'people' and who are 'us'?

Us meaning the folks that are hosting. I thought that was clear when I said "...so that we could have a medium to hold our own contests..."
Not sure how to make that clearer.
"People", as mentioned are the ones telling "us", the aforementioned folks hosting the contest, how to run them... as explained in the phrase "...without having people tell us how to run them..."
I truly cannot understand how this wasn'

As you mentioned, you're late to the party. You don't remember how it was when the contests stopped because of this entitled behaviour.
I apologize for not explaining it.
Oh, wait. I did. When I said: "Contests had been ruined by people complaining about who won, the judging criteria, complaining that their choice didn't win, making suggestions - and demands! - about how other people's contests should be run, and a whole lot of other nonsense."
As mentioned (I think you may have missed it) people got turned off of hosting contests because of folks saying "You have to run your contest like this" and "I think you need to do this this and this instead of what you are doing."
The Seasons, when they began, were a response to this. The whole point of keeping them going was "If you don't like how someone is running their contest and think you've got a better way, do that when you run your own contest." It was an opportunity to defuse those feelings folks have of "I don't like the way this contest is run, so I'm going to complain about it" and to give them a chance to put their money where their mouth is.

The majority of this second paragraph is any case irrelevant to the matter at hand. No-one in this thread has complained about who won, the judging criteria, or about whose choice won (if in fact that's any different from 'about who won').

This, of course, is - possibly intentionally? - missing the entire point I'm making.
Giving examples of other, similar behaviour, that caused contests to end on UU, to reinforce my point that this behaviour, did, in fact, cause that to end is completely relevant.
Seriously. How are you not getting this?

You really don't get it, do you.

They're OUR contests, individually. That is the entire point.
Perhaps it's your misunderstanding - incomprehensible as it is - of the "we" and "us".
"The host makes all the rules. ALL of them." is in no way a non sequitur. Again, just because you don't understand doesn't make it confused. If you don't understand, ask. Don't lecture. This is the core problem of this little diatribe of yours.

Again, the whole point of the Seasons is to give people the opportunity to host their own season THEIR way. The impetus to do this was the prevalence of people trying to impose THEIR way of running a contest on the host.

What's happening here, with the pressure being put on Ukeeku to respond, is EXACTLY the kind of thing that caused the impetus.

[/QUOTE]
And here's the problem, exactly.
Custom and practice don't come into it.
As mentioned - ad nauseum - and it seems that it has to be ad nauseum - the whole point of the Seasons contest was to give people the opportunity to run a contest their way, by their rules. And ONLY their rules. To demand otherwise not only goes against the core principles of why they started, but will also turn off folks from hosting again. Ask Ukeeku if he'll ever host again after this?
Oh, and "Be prepared to be disappointed"? Did you miss the theme of the week? Do you not get that he was being clever?

Japanese is a very idiomatic language, and the idiom for 'rude' in Japanese is 'other than expected person'. The blue corner is finding Ukeeku's behaviour 'other than expected' (I'd never run across Ukeeku prior to this season, so don't know what to expect).

Then you REALLY don't know what you're talking about. Why are you lecturing?

The red corner in its turn is finding the blue corner's comments on his behaviour 'other than expected'. As a consequence, both sides are arguing past each other.

I disagree completely.

The instant that we start putting rules on how these contests are run, then we're done. I'd give it six or seven weeks after the end of the current list.
Demanding that people run contests how you want them run goes against everything that the Seasons were supposed to be about.
Imposing your view on how someone else - which is what you are suggesting - will ruin the seasons.

I'll say it again.

If you don't like how Ukeeku is running the contest and think he should be doing something different, do that different thing when you host your own. You don't get to demand that he host it your way.

I hope this was a little easier for you to understand.

Sorry to hear about your companions. It's heartbreaking to be sure! I've lost many a pet and had to have some put down and hold them as they've moved on. Makes me teary eyed even now. I lost my parrot of 20 years recently and though I miss her I'm kind of releaved that she has moved on. Even with the attention I could give her it is a bleak existence living in a cage most of the time. Two of our pet rats are rescues and we rescue cats and kittens when we can. So we help out but I just wish pets, and people for that matter, didn't have to suffer.
