So while I’m waiting for my video to upload to YouTube, I hope you don't mind my sharing a very cool story with you.

I had dinner with the Four Tops! And the Temptations, too!

Many, many years ago, when I was in college, I worked at the “world famous” Cape Cod Melody Tent. The Temptations and the Four Tops toured together, and they did two shows each evening, as did several other group acts. In between shows, there would be a big cookout, and staff was allowed to attend.

The previous year, I had gone to see them even though I did not work at the Tent (I was hired later that summer, during Liberace’s run); I paid hard-earned cash money for my ticket, and it was worth every penny. One of the things I loved was that the Tops wore these beautiful gray suits… with red shoes. Red shoes! They were just the right shade, and I loved them. I loved them so much that, not long after, when I was walking down Main Street in Hyannis, I spotted some red shoes and I immediately bought them. They were my Tops Shoes. Of course, the next year, when I was not only going to TWO shows but also having dinner with (well, in the same location as) the Temps and the Tops, I wore the red shoes.

The first show was awesome, as if I have to even say that, but alas: no red shoes.

So there I was, sitting on the ground with a plate of chicken and a few people I knew and a bunch of people I didn’t, including a nice gentleman who was neither a Temp nor a Top. Somebody commented on my shoes, and I explained that they were my Tops Shoes, because the Tops had worn red shoes the year before. This was how I found out that the guy next to me was the road manager for the Tops, because next thing you know he called out to a guy standing behind me: “Hey, Levi! What happened to the red shoes? This young lady bought red shoes just for you!”

I was mortified, in my snazzy red shoes, hands covered in barbecue sauce. Levi apologized, but I told him I loved him anyway (I’m paraphrasing). Mostly he was amazed that I remembered the shoes, and that I wanted to see their show three times. To my continued embarrassment he spread the word, and the other Tops were equally amused. But seriously, these guys could not have been nicer.

The lesson: Motown choreography is murder on the shoes.

what a lovely story, something like that will always be with you to share,

I know what you're all thinking: "It's Motown week. Why isn't anyone doing anything by French composer Michel Legrand?"

Here it is! "Happy" was written by Michel Legrand and Smokey Robinson, and it was the "Love Theme from 'Lady Sings the Blues'" but it does not appear in the movie nor on the soundtrack. Probably a good call, because it doesn't seem very Billie Holiday to me, but it is a lovely song. I have mixed feelings about Legrand, but I love what he and Smokey have done here. The original version is by Michael Jackson, who recorded it around his 14th birthday, which is pretty impressive.

For some reason I had a lot of trouble with the audio recording, so I hope you can hear it. If not let me know, although I have no idea what I would do about that. If you can hear it, I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks, wallyboy, for a really fun Season!

Again, a very tight week -- I'm in the middle of my second 10 out of 12 (That's ten hours of rehearsal out of a twelve hour day) this weekend. But I stole a half hour at lunch to record this in my dressing room. Just using the Macbook's mic, so it clips out a bit. Sigh.

Anyway, I had fun ukifying this song. Thanks, wallyboy!

So bearing in mind I've been struck down with tonsillitis this week I didn't even think I'd get anything recorded. I literally looked up a list of Motown songs 10 minutes ago, chose one very quickly and recorded this very rough version in one take. But hey, it's not too bad (I hope).

Thanks for hosting Wallyboy.

Ran out of time on this one! Had lots of vid files to cut in, but had to send a simple edit before bedtime ;-)

The Locomotion, complete with a little brass and 60's effect on the Uke channel ;-)

Enjoy

I've decided to jump in and submit my first attempt at the seasons. When I decided I would do this I realized I need to learn iMovie, Garageband and a new song so this week has been really full. I chose a song Louis Armstrong put out in the 60's called "Wonderful World". The US didn't promote the song, however the UK did and it went big! There isn't anyone in the US that isn't familiar with the song now. I had a lot of fun making this video and the out takes make me laugh out loud every time I watch them. I've included some for your viewing please:) others ended up on the cutting room floor;)

Standing in the Shadows of Motown (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314725/?ref_=sr_1) is an excellent documentary about the Funk Brothers, the group of session musicians who backed many Motown singers.
The film (Netflix has it) includes historic footage, interviews with remaining players, and dramatic recreations.
A very satisfying film for those who love this genre.

Wally, what a great prize! (He sent us "The Ukulele Playlist - Yellow Book" - "32 rock & pop classics", from "Beat It" to "King of the Road", "Rehab", "Ring of Fire", ABBA's "Mamma Mia", a-ha's "Take on Me", REM, Madonna, Bowie, Green Day, Nirvana, Bee Gees, Mamas and Papas ... crazy!) We opened it together Friday night, and had a lot of fun perusing the amazingly eclectic song selection. Looking forward to picking a few favorites to play for future videos. Just finished our drinking song for Season 87 ... will post as soon as YouTube sees fit to upload it for us.

Thanks so much! Winning our first time out was a big thrill for us ... we are still enjoying that! Thank you all for so much fun!!!!
