Bindings are a little much for me, but I'm sure they're great ukuleles.

I can agree with that. I prefer the clean look of HF-3 with nice koa curls - or the nice elegant bindings on Jake's ukes, but that's someting different.

Glad to see your posts again. Hope you are feeling better. Those "deluxe" Kamakas sure sound sweet.

Good to see you back again Mike!

The rope binding is available on the concerts too. I opted to have just the 3A curly koa, no binding, because I have an Ohta San

Beautiful!

I'm so used to seeing nothing but full, Koa bodies from Kamaka that it seems odd to see a spruce topped one. Have they done a lot of that in the past?

That Koa is beautiful!!! Kamaka makes a great uke....but I am not a fan of the rope binding. Phew......saved me some $$$ there!!!

Me too! I like the rope binding on the spruce top deluxe Kamakas. It seems to work well with the different colors in the spruce and koa.

Was not a fan of rope binding either but love the sound of my Ohta San cedar top so much, that the rope binding is more appealing to me now. My uke looks like a spruce top because the cedar is white cedar. The koa used for the back, sides and headstock is just gorgeous. It's a striking combination. Casey Kamaka chooses the wood sets for the Ohta Sans.

Welcome back Mike! These are beautiful! I've always had my heart set on a Kamaka and my lovely wife just bought herself a $5000 sewing/quilting machine, so she's feeling a little guilty! Looks like I can maybe get one and that Koa is just to die for! How much and when will it be available?

That's the thing with camera phones under fluorescent lights. We already have to deal with images being digital and 2 dimensional. These new models need a bit of pro gear to even attempt a fraction of the beauty they behold. These are the nicest Kamaka's I have seen short of Casey's custom work.

Dana, leave the strings! You gotta have at least one of your Kamakas with a signature set! That thing is SICK. I haven't had any signs of UAS in at least six months and then enter these damn Kamaka deluxes  Haha

Thanks Len, it's rosewood, their woods always have nice coloring, well selected. Little things like the koa/ebony purfling strip on the side and also inside the maple/koa/rosewood rope make these extra nice.

Ya, this koa will curl as you twirl. The dimensional quality that makes it extra beautiful is hard to capture. That one's super nice Dana! ..does she want a spruce top sister. no?...lol (still got that MM?)

Well Matt, we shall see. They do have a very sweet tone, but they don't have that crispness and clarity that I like.

Sure she would love to have a spruce top sister. Or perhaps even a cedar top cousin. But unfortunately the piggy bank is empty now. And yes, the MM is still much loved! :)

Moore, is that difficult for finding (4A+) Stress Curl KOA now?

During i order a Kamaka special, they said that they dont have these.
But i really like the appearance of 4A+...

there is 4A Koa all over the place..... many builders have very nice curly Koa....

but Kamaka does not have any for their Special orders....they use for their custom ukes.......or maybe saving for their100th anniversary models....

2011 HF-2S, 2013 Cedar Top Ohta San, 2013 HF-2+

These 3A Concerts ordered directly from Kamaka; Ohta San from HMS. Love them all!

Am I the only Kamaka lover that is not going all gooey eyed over the specials? The existence of these things makes the concert bell (Ohta San) seem less special to me.

The existence of these things makes the concert bell (Ohta San) seem less special to me.

It doesn't make them less special in reality though. The bell shaped concert has a deeper richness than any of them. It's almost like a baritone voicing at the standard tuning. If you like warm tones, the Ohta San is still where it's at.

Moore, is that difficult for finding (4A+) Stress Curl KOA now?

I wouldn't call that "Stress" curl. Stress or compression curl is the result of the wood grain buckling under the pressure of tons of weight above the tree. It's normally found lower down at the base or where large limbs grow. Many trees that normally are not genetically predisposed to being curly may develop this kind of curl if conditions are right (age, size, weight, shape, environment, etc.) It's beautiful wood but the grain is radical and inconsistent. I won't use it for instrument building. Compared to stress curl, the kind of curl shown in the Kamaka picture here is in the tree's DNA and may be (or not) more or less consistent throughout the tree, with the curl being heaviest toward the outer bark edge. There are many different kinds and degrees of curl and they are called different things by different people; tiger curl, pin curl, fiddle back, quilted curl,or as I call this stuff, velvet curl.

there is 4A Koa all over the place.

I wish this were true. Of all the koa that is harvested, that which has nice curl and is suitable for building instruments with is probably about 1%. That's the reason it's not hard to pay $100 or more per board foot. Those of us with good curly koa are grateful indeed. BTW, the lesser grades of koa can be just as good for building ukuleles or even better than the fancier stuff. Some of us can't resist the eye candy though........
