View Full Version : Seasonistas jamming with Seasonistas

I think it's a blast to see Seasonistas from different locales playing together, and I have started this thread as a place to put those specific get-together videos, even if they have also been posted in a Season. These can be actual or virtual get-togethers.

Ralf, would you please post your vids with Sean?
erivel, would you please post the vid you did with Chelle at a distance?
Billskidoo, would you please post the vid you did with Eric at a distance?
Who else has done them?

If you're a Seasonista (one post in a Seasons challenge makes you one) who has recorded a video playing with another Seasonista from somewhere else (not a regular co-player), let's see it here!
(And add comments about when you did it and what prompted the choice.)

I'm particularly happy that Pabrizzer did "Nothing is as it Seems" that's one of mine I really like, but my version has the least views of all my songs on youtube. :(

Greenie44 posted a lovely collaboration with Barbablance and Uke4ia over on Season 95 (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?90339-season-95-of-the-ukulele-–-sounds-of-the-seventies-–-disco-glam-rock-abba&p=1442437#post1442437) and The Island (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?85238-The-Island-of-Misfit-Seasonistas&p=1442443#post1442443), prompting this question from me:

I was thinking to one day host a season of collaborations with other Seasonistas. Few things make me happier than seeing this kind of connection being produced behind the scenes. Very inspiring! What a wonderful world we live in that lets us do this kind of thing across the continents, and share it with a whole community of others in far-flung places and times. What a lovely thing to wake up to.

Who would you most want to collaborate with in my mythical future Season? What song would you do?

Here's the video Wendy mentioned. It's a collaboration between Barbablanca, Greenie44, and me. It certainly belongs in this thread.

For me, the issue is that I have minimal video editing software and editing ability, so I would need to collaborate with someone who could edit the pieces together. Rick did that expertly on this collaboration.

I'm still trying to figure out how to use the equipment and software I do own. This video was the first time (in four tries over the past year) that I successfully managed to run my uke through the effects processor module in my Yamaha MOX6 synthesizer. The solo was done using a "Compressor Distortion Delay" effect in the synth.

Here's another collaboration, this time with decateurcomp. Alan and I had been discussing doing a different song on the same Dylan album when the Mexico theme came up, and this fit right in.

Had a deuce of a time getting the synch close (still not perfect) and there is a bit of distortion in the audio, but I think it came out OK.

Thanks for the reminder, Rick. I too forgot to post this video Rex and I made Groundhog Day / Super Bowl weekend for Fred's blues week - my first ever long-distance Seasonista collaboration.

I had this idea to do "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" ... but I don't live on Route 66 - I live on the equally historic but less well-known Lincoln Highway. Historic because it was the first fully coast-to-coast connected US driving road, completed in 1913, thirteen years before Route 66. Less well known because it doesn't have a kick-ass popular song like "Route 66". Here's my attempt to rectify that.

I found this kick-ass hopefully-soon-to-be-popular song "Goin' Down the Lincoln Highway" by the charming and talented Nils Anders Erickson, my new friend in Omaha (midpoint of the Lincoln Highway, and the apex of its centennial celebration last summer). And ... as I'd hoped, it has pretty much the same chord structure as "Route 66", and a similar storyline - endpoints, miles, place names along the way. Precisely what I went looking for ... the perfect song to mash up with "Route 66".

So here's "Route 66 vs Lincoln Highway", starring the charming and talented JazzBanjoRex (in Tulsa on Route 66) and me (in NJ on Lincoln Highway):

My dad sent me a link to this article you may find interesting regarding a new site it beta for virtual jamming with friends over the internet

http://www.acousticguitar.com/News/Online-Jam-Platform-JamKazam-Opens-for-Beta

I did a little reading up on it and it sounds promising enough to experiment with. A couple of caveats though:

1. You really need a DI type recording device with an ASIO driver interface like M-AUdio or Behringer etc

2. A 64 bit OS

3. You need a pretty low latency connection between the participants for it to be much fun I think.

The ability to record and share your jam is pretty cool though!

There used to be a similar service offered by ASCAP called 'Virtual Glass' but they shut it down back in 2009. I don't remember why.

It's very cool to see something like this, which I have just started to look for today, so your timing in posting this could not be more perfect! :)

My only concern is if you use this for your original compositions, and they store the recordings, who OWNS the recordings? or the rights to the recordings?

I'm going to have to read their signup terms very carefully.

If it's like Facebook's policy, if you read the fine print in their terms of service, when you click the 'I Agree' button, you assign full and unrestricted usage rights to ALL content that you upload to Facebook, all your photos, videos and text content -- you grant them the rights to use however they want without your explicit permission or ability to object to the use.

This has been documented a few times, and one example was where they used someone's baby photos in their advertising, without permission of the owner of the photos. That's just bad practice, but I guess it's par for the course when you have to remember that if the 'service' is totally free, then there is some catch, and that catch is usually that YOU are the product being sold either to advertisers or to data mining companies. It's truly George Orwell's Big Brother incarnate.

Having said that, the fact that JamKazam intends to offer an upgraded for-pay version of the service, these issues might be a moot point, but maybe something to keep in mind when evaluating something like this.

Thanks for posting this, I am definitely going to give them a good look!

They also say there's a 500 mile limit between participants - presumably because of latency at greater distances - so not much use for jamming across oceans which is a pity. No Europe/US/Australia jams :(

03-15-2014, 08:43 PM
I'm glad to hear someone found this useful. Geoff, I agree. I expect that latency is going to be the deciding factor for most. They mention distance but really it's just the quality of your connection and the routing. People with google fiber can probably do this cross country but I doubt an intercontinental jam is going to be feasible.

here's another recent one, voluntary collab this time..(I love the idea of hijacking vids and adding tracks to them - I think I'll have to try that)..
On this one, Lynda did the basic track, I overdubbed Octave Bari and growling, and added a verse that I made up all by myself.
We are both quite pleased with it I think!

Following the wise recommendation from Ginny in the Season 109 thread, I am sharing the video from when BEVOMU (Lynda) kindly invited me to collaborate with her for Season 109.

I felt so honored and privileged to participate with someone so talented and wonderful.

Full details about our session are here (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?94033-Season-109-of-the-Ukulele-Girls-Just-Wanna&p=1497273#post1497273), which is a direct link to the post in that thread.

Season 109 was hosted by ukuLily Mars, and the theme was 'Girls Just Wanna Write Songs', and our entry was 'Love Comes' by Bananarama.

On a recent Soutnern swing, I was able to meet up with a couple of Seasonistas who I greatly admire - decaturcomp and Southside Mike. I've done remote collaborations with both of them, but it was nothing but joy to meet them in person and play together. We did a number of tunes, but this was the only one we got recorded. Alan and I jammed together again the next night - videos from that session coming up.

Here are TWO seasonistas along with other non-seasonistas at Hollesley 2014 Ukulele Jamboree. It features the inimitable Krabbers, Caroline (not in shot but playing some of the melody on a mouth piano thingy), John Caudrey, Me, Nigel Best and Liam Capper-Starr. Lucky me got to play with such fantastic players. Krabbers and Caroline are getting married in two weeks so this was their combined Stag and Hen do. They called it a Hag do.

This is really cool. I took a look at the site http://bandhub.us and it is actually pretty cool. You can find songs and see what you can add to it then I think the originator can accept or not accept. I didn't spend a lot of time. Has there ever been a 'collaboration' season? Would be cool to know how to do this.

This is a lot more fun than simply playing with my dear friend Ukuleledaddy, who I met here on the Underground.
We have been fortunate to play a few times together, and hang out, and he is a consumer of my weekly radio show...music is a HUGE part of our friendship.
Anyway- we were talking and I told him that many people had asked, but no one had ever grabbed the brass ring and done a show. Ten years- no break...
He took the bait and produced an absolutely fantastic bit of radio that I think you all will enjoy. I know I did.
Offer stands my friends-my musical community.
Thanks Sean- this is about the best tribute I could have.

A collision of Tributes ...Bevomu Lynda did a tribute cover of Ukey Daves version of Where Do You Go To My Lovely ?......
I did a sort of jam / collaboration with Ukey Dave's version .......playing a Scandalli 80 accordion....so I also threatened Lynda (Bird etc) with an Ackordeenisation of her tribute.....Lynda agreed ...(mad fool) and so to square the circle sort of kind of thing I started to do the recording ...but kept getting Lynda's file mixed up with Dave's .....cos they both have the same title....so I change Lynda's to Ou' allez vous ,Ma Belle.....?

But whatever it's called it's our joint tribute to Dave.

I was planning to do this number anyway at Tricity Vogue's Ukulele Cabaret; so when Pablo turned up, it seemed only right that we do it together: Further On Up The Road :-)

A couple weeks before we convened at Obing for Miri and Steffen's International Uke Festival, Heinz (Elmann) adapted the lyrics to "YMCA" and asked us to sing the parody song to them as a thank-you gift. He sent lyrics to us in advance so we could practice it a little. Just before our group broke up with the first good-byes, we asked our hosts to sit and listen to a little song. This is the first time we sang it together. They were delighted and immediately asked to play it with us.

Ghigo and Saverio (ombracorta) Porcari, we tigers, Heinz, and two Turners.
It was filmed by Chiara Porcari, holding the camera above the heads of Miri & Steffen.

After attending my first UWC in 2013, I spent a long drive home reminiscing about the magic moment I had just experienced and all the great ukulele people that I met and became friends with there.

Many of those memories included the multitude of brightly colored lights which decorate the stage, and I found myself repeatedly singing the old Claudine Clark tune, "Party Lights." It quickly lended itself well to a rewrite of the lyrics to capture my memories. However, it has taken me two years and a lot of growth and encouragement from SOTU as well as the accompaniment from some Seasonista friends to perform it as my first time to lead on an open mic. (I usually hid in a back row somewhere - unseen and unheard! :) Hope you enjoy:

There are many other Seasonistas attending the Ukulele World Congress (UWC) this year, but this was one of the songs that ddanner, Jazzbanjorex, and Fil Wisneski did to contribute to SOTU 224: Songs That Make You Happy! The three of us camped there together this year, and we certainly missed our last year's compadre, BigDaddyUker who had to cancel out at the last minute this year. Hopefully, next year all 4 of us will be able to attend together, AND attend for the entire time!

Evelyn and I were thrilled to have Fil Wisneski drop in for a quick visit to Roanoke while he was on his return trip back to NJ. Fil got here in time Thursday to join us for our weekly strum night for the Star City Ukulele Circle (Roanoke, VA, USA), and several of us did some additional jamming here at our home afterwards.

We had hoped to do something that would work for Pa's SOTU 254, but we just couldn't come up with the "right" song for the 3 of us that met the theme requirements. We opted instead to do an old favorite which lends itself nicely to harmonies. Hopefully, I can still get something in for 254 in the next day or two.

We had a blast while Fil was here, and want any other traveling Seasonistas to know that the door is always open at the Danner's home. Drop in anytime, "IF" you have your uke with you! :)

We hope you enjoy: He Was A Friend Of Mine

Last June, I arrived at Ukulele World Congress on Tuesday evening and found Alan Thorton and Joey Gibson rehearsing together. I wormed my way in. :) Joey scrolled through my iPad songbook and found "Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key". Turns out we all love that song, so we tried it out and the results made me high as a kite.

Later in the week, when the opportunity arose to play at a local art gallery, we joined forces again, this time bolstered by Jazzbanjorex. We had such fun playing together, we decided to get a slot for the Saturday night open mic. With "Way Over Yonder" still ringing in my head, I insisted we do that one, and Rex offered up "Shady Grove".

I think we got on stage sometime after 1 a.m. Two songs & out, but I could have played with these guys all night. I know I don't participate too often these days, but thank you SOTU for making this collaboration happen.

Just back from a great weekend at The Grand Northern Ukulele Festival (GNUF) in Huddersfield. A fun time was had by all, with some amazing acts from all over the world to entertain us.
Myrna made it all the way from Alaska again, and buzzed from workshop to workshop, ending up on stage with one ensemble.
Mike Flaherty & We Tigers combined to do a beautiful set of Radiohead covers (a lady behind me started to cry, for all the right reasons - it was that good).
Krabbers & Caroline did a fantastic job running the Unplugthewood stage.
The Ukelites were sublime as ever.
And I finally got to meet John, better known around here as OneManAndHisUke. We tried to find a quiet corner, and failed, so apologies for the background rumble, but here we are playing a song that John heard for the first time about two minutes before I switched the camera on.

Yay! Thanks Steve. It was a lot of fun. My first time at GNUF ( it won’t be my last) my first time eating Polish food (it won’t be my last) my first collab with a fellow Seasonista (it won’t be my last :D) . So tempted to buy one of those Wurzel and Aunt Sally (or whatever it is) ukes that BEV plays so beautifully on here, but some how I resisted. Fab weekend of music, my own personal highlights, Bad Mouse Orchestra, The HotPotato Syncopaters, The Ukelites (natch) , the brilliant Grabit and Bang, and the awesome Amelia Coburn. There were a few “solo singer with just a Uke” performers over the weekend, but she was just something else.
