Season 91 - SEX CHANGE!
Now that I have your attention...

I want you to perform one of your favourite songs written, performed or made famous by a member of the opposite sex. It's as simple as that. I'm not looking for novelty wigs and forced vocal ranges, I'm looking for a strong interpretation and heart felt performance of a song by one your favourite vocalists of the opposite sex. It's a good week to showcase an artist for whom you have deep respect and admiration.

The Rules Are...

PLEASE don't post any videos until Sunday out of respect for the previous host
The main focus should be the ukulele and no multi-tracking this week... I want passion and I want it live (don't we all!)
Duos etc... apply “opposite sex” to whoever sings the lead vocal
Please mention Season 91 in your video
No bonus' this week... all entries count but keep it to a max of three per person and pour your very soul into every take!

The Prizes Are...
I shall pick two winners this week...

Best gentlemen's performance of a song by a female artist
Best ladies' performance of a song by a male artist

… and each win a musical plush toy of Gabriel The Toad...

OMG what a fun and unusual theme. So many many songs to choose from. I've already got one in mind. A couple weeks ago someone suggested that I learn it and I thought- beautiful song but it's a guys song. Picking only three songs will be the challenge this week.

Great minds, Mike. I considered this as a theme. Lucky I had already decided on something else. I've done a few gender bending tunes already. What to pick, now?

Great theme Mike, and great to have you back in the seasons full swing. I was starting to work on a song I wanted to use as a bonus for the current season but won't have time. It will fit in nicely for your week. Woo hop!

I've never heard of Gabriel the toad, but i will say that I nearly chose bagpuss as my UU name.

do we change all the he's/she's in the song? or sing it as the opposite gender. ie if we were doing 'My guy' would we sing it as 'My girl'?

I didn't know if Bagpuss was known in the US, good to hear his saggy old cloth cat-ness has crossed the pond.

Entirely up to you :) I deliberately didn't mention this as I wanted to see what everyone would choose to do :)

Well thank you all for the encouraging words, it's always a little nerve wracking posting up a theme... I'm pleased you like it! Now go forth and wow me!

This is one of my entries this week by the first Woman that came to mind when I saw this theme: Melissa Etheridge. This is I'm the only one. I will probably be looking at Bonnie Raitt, Suzanne Vega, Michelle Shocked and/or Joan Armatrading for my next entry (just if somebody needed some names ;)).

Great season, Mike!

I tried to think outside the box for this one, because I tend to go for songs by male performers anyway. I just cannot sing high enough to perform anything by female artists well.

So, here's a version of 'Drift Away' - worked out from memory, because the chord charts I found weren't up to scratch.

Great challenge, Mike. Looking forward to lots of folks getting in touch with their opposite-gendered sides this week.

When I told my wife, Jessica, about this one, we came up with three great songs to work on this week, and had tons of fun singing this one together during that brainstorm session. Quite a fun song to sing with that special someone, it turns out.

I had my emotional education at the hands of Joni, Joan Armatrading and Janis Ian etc. I was really into female singer-songwriters! (and still am...)
So, if anything was going to get me to do a cover, then it was the chance to do my favourite Joan Armatrading song.

So here is "Down to the Ground" -

Such passion for THE TOAD! You're making them both nervous!

xommen: Melissa Etheridge... Superb choice Wim and very nicely done, there's some quality chords in that tune.

Shady Wilbury: Drift Away... great to hear the season is inspiring. Terrific version Casey :)

bird's eye view of my ukelele: T.Rex... yes yes yes! Top song choice and your voice suits it perfectly. Consider me impressed!

bird's eye view of my ukelele: Bryan Ferry... Mmm, love this one too. You're on fire this week!

xommen: Bonnie Raitt... Another fabulous artist choice Wim. Your vocals are on top form with this one Sir... an emotional performance and I like the vocal effect too.

Jazzbanjorex: Janis Joplin... It goes without saying that's a top artist to choose. You should let your inner Janis out more... that was pure quality Sir. AWESOME vocal performance.

Jazzbanjorex: Tracy Chapman... Another spark of genius and I like the way it's a total contrast to the Joplin performance. Super job.

TheOnlyUkeThatMatters: Liz Phair... Does this mean there are 2 more to come!!! :) Superb job Ralph... there's some quality syncopation going on between the cool strumming and vocal melody.

Barbablanca: Joan Armatrading... Great performance Berni... packed with gusto! Magnificent.

Well it's only Monday morning and the standard is already stunningly good... keep 'me coming! I can see choosing the winners be be nigh on impossible!

Thanks Mike, I tried to respond on youtube, but it does not let me?
the vocal effect on the Bonnie Raitt song is actually the audio of the camera lagging some microseconds to the audio from my two microphones.
It's and effect that you can't get any other way, and I sometimes use it to my advantage, other times I just mute the camera audio.

Strange. Must be something to do with this Google+ nonsense. I did untick the "Also Share On G+" but that shouldn't matter.

Ha! I love that... cool effects the old school way! MANY years ago I remember rigging up an echo chamber from a CB radio to a 4 track tape portastudio and playing a stylophone solo through it... we managed to get a dive bomb tremolo at the end of the solo changing some setting or other just at the right moment. It would take 2 seconds on a laptop but where's the fun in that :D

Well, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist adding an original this week. But I had no idea it would be a song I wrote this morning!!!

Our very own Birds Eye View Of My Ukulele made a comment about not being able to get a romantic song out of a broken clutch on a Peugeot.... Well, that was like the proverbial red rag to the bull. I don't know if I managed to make the song all that "romantic" - but it certainly is about a romance. I wrote this from the point of view of a "car widow" - so I think it should still fit the theme, shouldn't it, Mike?

Here is "FUEL"

Lyrics in the description on Youtube.

Google... remember the "don't be evil" thing? Then STOP making everyone sign up to Google+! :/

I honestly don't know what's going on Berni (and Wim)... I can't reply to your quotes either. All settings look fine to me, the ONLY thing I can deduce is as I unticked "Also Share On G+" (so all my GMail contacts don't get hassled with 20 comments from me every day) that MAY stop anyone replying on the YouTube thread as technically any YouTube comment is now a G+ post. A quick search and it sounds to me like the whole world hates Google just now.

Vimeo anyone?? ;)

Barbablanca: FUEL... As long as it's a female car window I'll let you off ;) "You give me no fuel to feed on" is a pretty clever hook! Top job Berni... the chorus is just terrific.

It was definitely a "she" in my mind as I wrote it. Most of the gay guys I know would happily talk carburetors all evening ;) - Though I suppose there are lots of lasses who get the engine bug. Just not the protagonist of my story.

Tried replying to you and was told: "Not allowed" - They'll have to sort this. I also found a video this morning completely unrelated with UU that had people's comments on it, but when I attempted one, I was told ""Not allowed" . Someone has SNAFUed big time!

"Poughkeepsie," by Over the Rhine. For those sensitive to the subject matter, I'll note from the outset that this story *does* end well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKB344X4zOQ

My arrangement, for anyone interested:

"Poughkeepsie," by Over The Rhine

F9: 0100
F(5): 3102
C6: 0000

G7

C Cmaj7
I thought I'd go up Poughkeepsie,
F F9
look out o'er the Hudson,
C-sus9-C G7-sus9
and I'd throw my body down on the river.
C C7
And I'd know no more sorrow,
F F9
I'd fly like the sparrow
C-sus4-C G7-sus4 C
and I'd ride on the backs of the angels tonight.

G7 G7sus4 F(5)–F C
I'd ride on the backs of the angels tonight.
G7 G7sus4 F(5)–F C
I'd take to the sky with all my might.
C Cmaj7
No more drowning in my sorrow,
C7 F
no more drowning in my fright,
C–sus6-C G7-sus9 C
I'd just ride on the backs of the angels tonight.

C Cmaj7
There are those who know sorrow
F F9
and those who must borrow
C-sus9-C G7-sus9
and those whose lot in life is sweet.
C C7
Well I'm drunk on self-pity,
F F9
scorned all that's been given me,
C-sus4-C G7-sus4 C
I would drink from a bottle labeled Sure Defeat.

G7 G7sus4 F(5)–F C
I'd ride on the backs of the angels tonight.
G7 G7sus4 F(5)–F C
I'd take to the sky with all my might.
C Cmaj7
No more drowning in my sorrow,
C7 F
no more drowning in my fright,
C–sus6-C G7-sus9 C
I'd just ride on the backs of the angels tonight.

C Cmaj7
Then the skies, they fell open
F F9
and my eyes were opened
C-sus9-C G7-sus9
to a world of hope falling at my feet.
C C7
Now I've no more or less
F F9
than anyone else has,
C-sus4-C G7-sus4 C
what I have is a gift of life I can't repeat.

C Cmaj7
So I go up Poughkeepsie,
F F9
look out o'er the Hudson
C-sus9-C G7-sus9
and I cast my worries to the sky.
C C7
Now I still know sorrow,
F F9
but I can fly like the sparrow
C-sus4-C G7-sus4 C
'cause I ride on the backs of the angels tonight.

G7 G7sus4 F(5)–F C
I ride on the backs of the angels tonight.
G7 G7sus4 F(5)–F C
I take to the sky with all their might.
C Cmaj7
No more drowning in my sorrow,
C7 F
no more drowning in my fright,
C5–sus4-C G7-sus4 C
I'll just ride on the backs of the angels each night.

wee_ginga_yin: I Put A Spell On You... That's a terrific version, as you say, some nice chords in that tune.

TCK: Chrissie Hynde... I like your inner Chrissie Hynde, a very soulful performance Mr Cloverdale, top stuff.

DWitt: Over the Rhine... a beautiful arrangement of a beautiful song.

vct33: Ingrid Michaelson... Love it! That suits the uke so well, great performance my friend.

bonesigh: The Bellamy Brothers... Super strumming and a fabulous song... Fantastic! And I love the back story.

~dave~~wave~: Lucinda Williams... Loving the instrumental breaks, top job Sir.

wee_ginga_yin: Black Is The Colour... Oh yeah, you nailed that one! That could well be my favourite of your entries... great effects, great vocals, great song!

GinnyT11: The Beatles... Fabulous choice Ginny. On the surface you'd think that's a simple song but there's some complex chord structure in there and you've completely mastered it, super job!

wallyboy: The Seekers... I'm very pleased with my theme, you guys are coming at it from all angles. An inspired choice that fits the uke very nicely. And I'm a sucker for a bit of whistling... cracking job Sir!

southside mike: Dreamboat Annie... Spectacular rhythmic strumming with a gentle vocal delivery... a lovely performance of a lovely song.

ukeeku: 4 Non-Blondes... To quote Velma... "jinkies"... that's some serious big notes you're reaching there Sir, superb job. That's a tough vocal to pull off... but ya certainly did!

southside mike: Big Yellow Taxi... That's some smooth uking my friend! First class.

hucklelele: Donovan... I love Donovan! That's a lovely version, honest and soulful with soothing vocals. Captivating!

bird's eye view of my ukelele: Stand & Deliver... Your song choices this week have been absolutely inspired. Another glimpse of sheer brilliance Lynda.

You guys are the best and my day is already enriched... more more more...

Google+ update to those who couldn't reply to my YouTube comments. I think I've got to the bottom of it (give it a try Berni if you would).

I fiddled in my Google+ settings and there was a "don't allow people to comment on my Google+ posts" box ticked... so I changed this to let anyone comment (as G+ comments are now also YouTube comments). I suspect that will solve it... editing a setting in a service I don't use and never signed up for, yes that makes sense

This turned into a bit of a challenge. Lots of rehearsals, couldn't get it quite right, then decided this one would do.
Decided to pick a song only a woman would normally sing, although I know Rod Stewart had a version on Smiler.

One of my favourite female singers is Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span. I've seen her several times in concert though only once with Steeleye Span.

This song was their biggest hit. It's actually a "Mash up" of two traditional songs, "All Around My Hat" (Which gave their version its title) and "Farewell He". There's more info on You Tube.

I think you're right, Mike. I joined the despised G+ and went to its settings, where I unchecked any option that would connect me to anything further. My post-comment option was slightly different from yours, but I allowed posts from G+ and then I was able to reply to posts on my youtube video.

It appears that in G+ you can fine tune what you can let happen to any comment you have made
In the pointy down arrow thingy there is an option "disable replies to this comment"

I had desperately wanted to reply to a comment on one of my videos… indeed wrote a long
reply only to be informed that "you cannot reply to this comment".

The original posted must have turned it on inadvertently whilst coming to grips with G+
A work around is to go into the comment box and type +username (whoever you want to reply to)
and then write your message.

Confusing!!!

Rustyy: Carole King... Excellent choice with unchanged lyrics to boot... good man! Great job Sir.

Tootler: Steeleye Span... Mash-up-tastic! Brilliant job Geoff! I love "All Around My Hat"... always reminds me of the folk singer sketch on the Fast Show. Very nicely done.

Where exactly is this option Mike, I just went glazey-eyed trying to find it among all the myriad options now available - I must have seen all of them but that one! IGNORE THIS - see PS

PS..... OMG I just stumbled on to a load of other options among them the right one.

So go to ACCOUNTS - Then Click on Google+
There you'll see a section marked Who can interact with you?
One of the choices is:
Who can comment on your public posts? - Switch this to anyone!

A song by Kate and Anna McGarrigle, which I heard done by Linda Ronstadt. Kate has gone on, and Linda can’t sing any more, but the song is still very moving. Maybe that’s the key to the power music – it’s a container that carries the glory of our lives beyond our own life spans.

Hope you all like it.

I was referring to the whole range of chords within the key of Eb. Not the individual chord Elmann but thanks anyway. I also use this method of playing the Eb generally BUT there is an Eb to Eb7 to Ab change which is easier sequence if starting from the barred version.

This'll be anathema to some but capo 3 and play C shapes or capo 1 and play D shapes. Easier on a concert or tenor as there is more room on the fretboard.

Nice job on the song, btw. I've commented on You Tube.

Haha thanks Geoff. Well the term anathema may be a bit strong but I have vowed not to use a capo with the Uke as i'd like to develop my playing skills a bit better to be able to play as many keys as possible. Just my personal preference as I'd like to push myself a little and I know if I used a capo it would make me lazy. I won't be able to reply on you tube as I'm reluctant to click that google plus button until they drag me in kicking and screaming. I've never been very good at being told what to do. I like to rebel against the big corporate machine if I can, I think it must be in my DNA. No doubt I will be beaten into compliance soon enough though. lol

TCK
11-12-2013, 04:38 PM
It is funny how we have arrived here, so employment of the TCK rule is going on.
Let's talk about Phil. Nobody likes Phil anymore, because he went batty in the sixties. Unfortunately there were several victims of his complete lunacy, including on Lana Clarkson. Phil shot her, and although his much-publicized trial was news everywhere, it was never more talked about than here in sleepy old Cloverdale, where Lana went to High School. Before the influx of elders (we got a Del Webb here), this was a town of 4000 and well, everyone knew her family and friends. Very few of them knew who Phil Specter was.
Phil was a genius. A completely insane genius, credited with producing and or writing some of my very favorite songs I came to find...but nuts. 25 hits between 1960 and '65? Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a writer AND a producer? Dion Dimucci (my moms favorite), the RAMONES (my favorite), Ike and Tina...the Wall Of Sound and the Wrecking Crew? This guy changed the face of music FOREVER, but this is about the one that got away before he went totally insane.
In 1986 there was nothing really happening at all in music (see what I did) and really, the last place you would expect to hear something worth listening was MTV and Eddie Money...but there it was. One of the best voices I have ever heard walking down a flight of stairs belting out some Doo-Wop bliss- I was immediately star-struck.
"Dad- check this out!"
"Oh- That is an old Ronnettes song- I bet that is Ronnie Spector."
Great- dad knows it...social death in 5...4...3...2...
Ronnie was the one that got away I came to find (I love a back story). Seems old Phil kept her under pretty tight lock and key- even threatened to kill her, but together they made a few records. One, in particular. made in 1963 and purchased by a frantic foaming at the mouth 8th grader in 1986 has been a long standing favorite of mine for what seems like in my short perspective EONS.
So, say what you will about Phil, he made some amazing records. Now I suppose the nut-job from Cloverdale ought to try and capture that wall of sound with a single track Ukulele rendition of one of my favorite songs. THe Ronettes are to me what the Shangri-La's are to PeeWee...perhaps a band of guys with Ukuleles who play 60's girl group songs is just what the world needs?
One man Wrecking Crew...probably literally.

With all the great female singer/songwriters out there, it was tough to choose. I thought about doing Tracy Chapman, Bette Middler, Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Billie Holliday (wow, that discography makes me sound really gay, doesn't it?), but ultimately decided on this 1995 tune, which makes me sound... well, I assure you, I am neither bornagainchristian nor gay! This was tough for me! I don't usually play with such a fast strum, and doing it with the slow vocal was a bit strange, too. Plus the 6/8 time. A few chord changes are just a bit too late or too early, but the whole thing manages overall to not sound like crap, so . . . good enough.

Mandalyn, I might be able to help you fix that. When you upload to youtube sometimes it will give you a message that says "YT has detected movement. do you want us to fix it?" Then by default thye fix all the rest of the uploads you make. If you go into the video manager you can find a place to revert to the original and then by default the rest of the uploads don't have this problem. I figured this out with one of my videos and googling the problem. Hope this helps.

Funny thing is that both "For Bobby/Baby" and "Don't Think Twice" were popularized by PP&M. They where brilliant and I love them. They had the same manager as Dylan so his songs naturally were picked up by them, probably first. PP&M changed only three words in "For Bobby" and somehow changed the title to "For Baby". I wonder if they had to have permissions from Denver back then? I actually sang the PP&M three word change and realized it after taping and figured it wasn't worth doing over for three words. I have read Mikef's rule "songs written, performed or made famous by..." as all the same guy/girl. Im finding the seasons are loose:)

Gee I love this song. The first time I saw / heard it was on a music video TV show and it just blew me away. It has the most sublime cor anglais solo and you don't get that very often in this kind of music.
I have a couple of her CDs and this certainly was her best song INHO.
Not sure about my version and I have stuck with my one take rule. I'll probably revisit sometime singing an octave higher and with my son on cajon.

Morning all! Oooo more sensational videos... ...

[B]Joko: Joan Osbourne... Wonderul job Joko... love the video montage!

greyghost: Sinead O'Connor... What an inspired song choice! Super job Sir.

DWitt: Mazzy Star... Fast strum, slow vocals, plenty of reverb... sounds AWESOME! If Joy Division had ever released a uke song, it would have sounded like this (which is a HUGE compliment BTW) :)

frisbee fred: Patsy Cline... Very nice Fred. I love the gentle rhythmic strum, it suits the song perfectly.

Mattyukaholic: Camera Obscura... Aha... a bit of Scottish Indie Pop... I'm a sucker for this stuff (and whistle breaks) and that Sir was outstanding. Very Belle & Sebastian.

Rustyy: Leader Of The Pack... You know I was hoping someone would do this song. For some reason I've always loved Twisted Sister's take on this song... I know I know :) Absolutely awesome Rusty!!!

ukuleledaddy: Barbara Lewis... If we can't have a drink and a strum to relax Sean then the world has made a wrong turn. Now don't take this the wrong way, but maybe you should drink more often as you nailed that performance, fantastic vocals :)

ukuleledaddy: Joan Jett... LOL at the opening of the video! A complete contrast to your first entry... and another one nailed. Awesome Sir!

pabrizzer: Tanita Tikaram... I'm with you RE the cor anglais... one of my favourite instruments. Fabulous playing and an even more fabulous vocal performance PB... you totally made that song your own.

Here's my entry for this one. Sorry I've not had a chance to do the last few. Having a new baby leaves me no time for anything. In fact she makes an appearance on this song at the end which is why I get a bit confused and sing the wrong part! Sorry the whistling is so shrill. Bad iPhone mic!

The song is Eighties Fan by Camera Obscura which is normally sung by Tracyanne Campbell.

This one is dedicated to Ukey Dave who made the t-shirt I'm wearing. :)

I've actually worked with Tanita Tikaram. Nice lady, totally disregarding of all the PR b.s. that was going on around her.

Anyway, back to matters in hand. It might seem like I'm making a fetish out of doing songs in foreign languages, but this was the first song that came into my head when the theme was announced. On a motorcycle tour of Spain in 2002, I was lucky enough to catch Amaral at a fiesta in Salamanca (September 11 2002 :o). She (Eva Amaral) blew me away. It turned out they were touring what became their breakout album, Estrella De Mar (Starfish). This is the opening track from that album, Sin Tí No Soy Nada (Without you, I'm nothing).

http://youtu.be/wQ7Bi6jXYGk

Beyond '¿Dondé?', 'Cerveza', 'Por Favor' & 'Gracias' I don't speak any Castilian (Spanish) btw. I do speak Italian though. It was a great struggle not to pronounce 'luces' as 'luches' :)

Sin ti no soy nada

Intro:
Am

F G E7 Am

E7 Am
Porque yo, sin tí no soy nada
F G
Sin tí no soy nada, sin tí no soy nada.

F G E7 Am

E7 Am
Porque yo, sin tí no soy nada
F G
Sin tí no soy nada, sin tí no soy nada.

F G Am G F G Am G

C Am

This looks great, Mike, a very exciting week. I've just finished up a big job, so I can get back to the important stuff: SEASONS!
I've only now scanned over the playlist, and will be watching it through shortly.
Meanwhile here's a tune about being female and lonely..I resisted the urge to do yet another Shangri-Las song, and went more rockin'.
I'm glad to see that Wim did a PJ Harvey song too. Here's her first single, released in '91: Dress.

I've been "absent" from the forum for weeks and weeks now, due to general busy-ness and personal challenges. I really have missed hobnobbing with you.

In the last week, my mind, heart and soul have been focused on my country, the Philippines & finding various ways to help from 7000+ miles away - if you take a look at the forum marketplace, you'll see what I mean! (my Ohana CK-42R is nearly sold!!! Just waiting for confirmation)

Also, i thought of re-joining the forum Seasons - as my way of doing something happy and positive! Amid the terrible terrible situation in my country are countless examples of goodness, love & grace from all over the world.

PS - I'm really really sorry host MikeF - I've done some simple multi-tracking! Eek! Yikes! I'm really sorry for not reading instructions properly... will you still accept this? I'll understand if you don't. My fault.

Here is my third. Wildwood Flower. Obviously associated with the Carter Family, though my version here is not the one sung by the Carter Family. I developed my own arrangement based on several versions of the words I found on the Internet so I would, hopefully, avoid any copyright issues. The song itself dates from about 1860 and so is public domain. There are several versions going the rounds, the Carters being just one of them.

I'm blaming my currently croaky voice on TBUG partying (but it was probably the flight home). My lack of voice has resulted in this instrumental version of one of my favorite songs, Vincent by Don McLean.

I don't think I can do anything this week that fits this theme as well as "These Are the Fables" back in Season 62, a New Pornographers song originally sung by Neko Case(!). But I'm gonna try.

Entry #1: There was a time back in the '90s when Entertainment Weekly did reviews of bands that weren't Top 40 megastars, and helped me discover bands like Echobelly, who were big in the U.K. but totally unknown in America. This is my favorite Echobelly song, "Dark Therapy".

DWitt: The Squirrel Nut Zippers... I'd say you can consider the 6/8 well and truly nailed. Terrific song, well done Sir.

filipinouker: Live High... Seeing as it's so fabulous to have you back, we'll pretend you cloned yourself to sing live backing vocals off camera... that's what happened right? What a lovely song & performance.

lelouden: Michael Buble... Glissandotastic! There I go making up words again, but it was worth it. Lovely stuff Linda.

cua94: Neil Diamond... Ah, one of the catchiest songs ever written in my opinion. Excellent choice with a splendid performance. Nice one Liz, I couldn't stop myself singing "wooooo" at the appropriate moment!

Tootler: Wildwood Flower... You do realise Geoff the doll is dancing behind you ;) Wonderfully catchy tune, I like this one a lot.

SailQwest: Don McLean... TOO much partying? Can that be done? ;) As lovely as it would have been to hear you sing it, I think the instrumental version was stunning and I love the way that adds a twist to an opposite gender performance idea. Beautiful stuff.

uke4ia: Echobelly... Wow! Where did that come from! The Seasons never fails to surprise me. And I love Echobelly! Sonja has an amazing voice. Biggest mistake of my student life was not going to see them at the Student Union... not only were they amazing, but Morrissey was around all night in the audience. I digress... Inspired choice and a cracking performance Sir.

southside mike: Carly Simon... Oooooo that's some super smooth and slinky picking that fits perfectly with the soft emotional singing. Superb job Mike.

myrnaukelele: I Had But 50 Cents... Yeah! What a fun song Myrna, wonderful singing and kazoo-ing (is that a word?). My foot is uncontrollably a'tappin!

Rustyy: Lucinda Williams... That's performed at the absolutely perfect tempo, superb job.

ukuleledaddy: Hem... A more mellow evening yesterday? That was REALLY nice Sean, a tender performance with well placed injections of passion. We shall await you in Misfit Alley :)

Wowzers, I'm overwhelmed yet again! I'm off to bop around the office to Echobelly...

I went to see the Etta James story in Melbourne on Thursday Night. It was a local singer, Vika Bull, singing her way thru Etta's catalogue of songs. It was a marathon performance, I came away not knowing whether to admire Etta, or Vika, but decided I loved them both

Entry #3: Being a music nerd, I've been compiling my favorite songs of every year into a mix CD/playlist since I got my first iPod in 2005. This song was one of my favorites of 2011. This is "Black" by Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi. They made an album called "Rome" that was inspired by Ennio Morricone's soundtracks for the classic spaghetti Westerns, and Norah Jones and Jack White each sang on three tracks. So this was originally sung by Norah Jones.

Okay, my first entry was an indie rock hit; my second entry was a mainstream hit. Entry three might not be a hit at all, but it's a great song by Lois Maffeo. Lois is a terrific singer/songwriter from Olympia, Washington, one of the Pacific northwest's musical treasures. I'm glad to share her music with y'all---this song is by her band, Owl and the Pussycat. Be sure to check out the original version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2nxfxXZzSU) as well.

The stage was set for this to be the best video Melissa and I have ever done, because it is the ONLY song we have ever played that gave us the same reaction when we heard it- goose bumps.
We both love this song, and we sat down to give the performance of a lifetime here, a fire side jam session sure to win the hearts of many... and then we were gonna burn our Ukuleles in tribute as we faded into the seasonista sunset-
but it was not meant to be (so we will be back next week).
The dogs stole all the furniture, so we made do with sitting on the floor.
The stove, while it was keeping us warm, whined away throughout.
The nekkid cat had some sort of seizure- a really long seizure. a really funny seizure we did not laugh about. This is serious for god's sake!
The long version of this video has Melissa and I discussing in rather course language how all the forces around us converged to wreck this video...a regular f-bomb battle field which is fun but not family friendly (so omitted), but we laughed and laughed...
and then it dawned on me. If all we really have is tiny guitars and charm, this is probably the epitome of that. So yeah- tiny guitars and charm is what you get, and cats who are trying to die, and dogs who hog the furniture. Welcome to our living room. Welcome to Cloverdale.
Perhaps you can forgive the mess this is by understanding that it is a song by two young women being done by our very own Cloverdale Kid (who, as you know, drips testosterone hahaha), and it makes (integral) mention of two of the greatest female muses ever known to music-dom? That is like bonus points right?
All right- another junker from the Kid, rough as a cob. Emmylou- First Aid Kit

Gee Lumpy great job especially the percussion and singing bit. But Hank Williams ain't no woman.

I guess it depends which version you hear first as to who's song it is to you. I am most familiar with the Carpenters version.

There are many songs which you might hear a cover of first and assume it is the original, then when you hear the original you get confused and think ' that's not as good as the original' [I know what I mean]. Anyhow, the other one I have done is definitely female, although it is a group.

Sorry if I have offended anyone :^(

You certainly have not offended anyone Lumpy and I watched and enjoyed your video.
And it has sparked some banter so you should be pleased.
The thing I like about the seasons is meeting the challenge given by the host and sometimes that means doing a little home work. Certainly it was done by The Carpenters but it is an iconic Hank Williams song and hence has been done by MANY other artists.
The thing about typing in a forum post is that it is hard to differentiate between friendly ribbing and something else.
I guess the thing that un-nerved me was someone else being given credit for a Hank song.

Keep bringing your stuff to the seasons Lumpy. We're watching what you post and that's a good thing!

Aw Lumpy, not at all. Everyone's just having fun here, hopefully not at your expense. Hope nobody offended you. I also enjoyed your vid a lot. I did a song last week, a cover of Sweet Jane which I first heard done by The Cowboy Junkies and sung by the lovely Margo Timmins. Lumpy, I don't know if you were around in Season 86. But Austin1 wanted songs by Queen. I found plenty that I liked but none that I could do. So I googled them and found that in their live concerts they did an instrumental version of Danny Boy. So, I did Danny Boy for Queen. You and I think alike. And I have checked with the rules committee and this is perfectly acceptable :rulez:;)

OK happy people... here's a round-up of the last awesome batch of entries...

myrnaukelele: John Hartford... That was lovely Myrna, sung so beautifully. I just wanted to grab that upright bass and join right in!

Shady Wilbury: Rodney Crowell... Another cracking entry... I'm glad my season inspired you to learn a song you've wanted to do for ages :)

Lumpy Wafflesquirt: Karen Carpenter... "at least that's the version I am familiar with"... that's good enough for me and I'm in charge ;) Top strumming Sir and love the slap chorus!

29moons: Taylor Swift... He he he... wonderful job Sir, it looks like it's fun to play too!

TheOnlyUkeThatMatters: Blondie... Oo-er... loving the wiggles! That is very very impressive Ralf, what an amazing uke arrangement. Absolutely first class my friend!

eugene ukulele: The Weepies... If you want to pop round to Wales to chill out, bring your uke and play that song into the wee small hours and I'll be as chilled as chilled can be. Lovely playing and the vocals were spot on.

TheOnlyUkeThatMatters: Lois Maffeo... Ahhh, nice to hear a plug for a lesser known artist they like. Quality version Ralf, I'll make sure to check out Owl and the Pussycat.

thesillydave: Sinéad O'Connor... Nice version Dave, like it!

TCK: A Song For A Muse... Aw so sweet man, just beautiful... but I do hope the dogs gave the furniture back!

thesillydave: Teach Me Tiger... Ladies and gentleman, we have entry 91 for season 91... Woooo! Love it Dave, and that's a striking hat!

Lumpy Wafflesquirt: The Shirelles... A cracking song choice, nice job Sir!

redpaul1: Jackie DeShannon... Loving the intro with a quick poke of your tongue... seriously loving this track Paul!

max2173: ABBA... Quality song choice, I'm sure I thought of doing this track once... water week maybe? Anyhoo... no need now, you've nailed it Max! Now get the decorating finished :)

redpaul1: Roseanne Cash... Loving this one even more Paul! A great way to end my season!

Well that's it... it's all over... we've had some laughs, we've shed some tears, but now it's time to rock Mattydee's world in Season 92.

I make that 95 entries which is just AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, you guys truly astound me every week... such enthusiasm, spirit and friendliness from a bunch of amazing people for the four corners of the globe brought together by the love this wee little instrument. It has genuinely been an honour.

i totally agree with you on that

the first version of a song you hear - especially when you're growing up - can become completely iconic and even definitive in your mind, to the extent that it's a bit of a shock to the old system to discover someone else beat them to it!

also, i think when some of us say "this is x song by y person" we mean this song was performed by y, and are referencing that performance or artist... but when other folk say it they might very specifically mean it was written by y

experience has taught me it's probably best to google a song or wikipedia it or something and be able to maybe give a nod to who wrote it or performed it before...

but then again equally you could say before anyone chimes in and tells you a person DIDN'T do it, it's worth them googling it first too in case it turns out they did!

maybe there is a way to mention "ooh z wrote that song or z performed it first" in a friendly pub quiz useful factoid way, lest the more super musical knowledgeable among us frighten enthusiastic newbies away all together, when all they've done is share a version of the song that means a great deal to them

Here's the last one. Also done onstage with my eldest daughter Kristina. Cover of "The A Team" a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was released as a digital download in the United Kingdom on 12 June 2011, serving as the lead single from his debut album +. We got to see a mini concert of his in D.C. this past year where he did this song and a couple of others. I got to ask him a question......"Do you play the uke?"

Man this was a difficult one to call. There's been such skill and variety I wish I had 100 toads. I could honestly give a special mention to all of you, the entries have been that good. I've had an absolute blast and it's been a great privilege.

But with great privilege comes great responsibility and the 100 has to be somehow whittled down to match the number of toads sat on my desk.

So, ladies and gentlemen, our Season 91 winners are...

Best Male Performance of a Female Artist:
thesillydave - The Andrew Sisters
Terrific uke playing, a wonderful song, a lyrically unedited opening line of "Of all the boys I've known and I've known some" and not only a male interpretation, but a male interpretation of a male interpretation. I will never grow tired of watching this one... Dave, Toad#1 is yours!

Best Female Performance of a Male Artist:
bird's eye view of my ukelele - Bryan Ferry
I love all three of your entries but this one really stood out for me. You took an 80's chart topper and turned it into something completely different, interesting and new. The vocals are sublime and it's simply inspiring stuff... Lynda, Toad#2 is yours!

PM your details and your toads will be jiffy-bagging their merry way.

A final thought... these 2 deserving winners just show how amazing the Seasons are. If you'd said to me a week ago the winners would be Brian Ferry & The Andrews Sisters, I'm not sure I would have believed you. The Seasons are like a box of chocolates... yer never know what you're gonna get!

I wish I had 100 toads.

I don't think I've ever read that sentence before.

Congrats to the winners! And thanks, Mike, for another fun week.

Likewise me with:

where you got that toad.

To which, I think the only possible response is: "I haven't seen one like it since my grandma died!"

Congrats SD & BEVOMU!!

And thanks to Mike for hosting (and, like Ginny said, for thoughtful comments too).

Mike, super awesome week! Thanks for hosting. Congrats to the winners. Fine job everyone. I enjoyed exploring my feminine side (with a little help from Makers Mark) while my wife was away. Always fun to spend time with all of you.

Great Season, everyone. Loved seeing your genders get bent.

Congratulations, Dave and Lynda, on well-deserved ukulele glory and frogs.

Thanks, Mike, for a great week. I had about as much fun as possible learning songs for your Season. My feminine side just loves playing ukulele, I guess.

Just now finding time to stop by and say congrats to SD and BEV! You both deserve your toads!:D
And mikef- this was an inspiring week. I learned four new songs that I would never have learned without this gender swap theme. It was classic- a fabulous Season that is now gone but never forgotten.
