I have had my guitar a week, and looking for that first easy song that I can play on guitar, got a bunch of chords I can play EM, C, DM, D, G,
thanks

I'm also new to guitar, about 2 1/2 months. I just started playing the easy ukulele chords of songs I like. I did avoid songs in the key of F at the beginning or transposed them to G, D, A, or E. It's worked for me that way. If using one of the Daily Ukulele books, less chords sure worked better for me but I'm now doing them the way they're written. (only ones I already know how to play on the uke)

Hi Wally,

Four of those chords you've learnt can be arranged to form the chord progression G D Em C (aka I-V-vi-IV), which is one of the most relied upon in popular music. Axis of Awesome have built a whole comedy career on this basis alone:

To get you going here's two:

1) Wagon Wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show

Code:
Intro:
G, D, Em, C
G, D, C (2x)

Verse 1

G D
Headed down south to the land of the pines
        Em C
And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
G
Starin' up the road
    D C
And pray to God I see headlights

  G D
I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Em C
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
          G
And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh
      D C
I can see my baby tonight

Chorus

   G D
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Em C
Rock me mama anyway you feel
G D C
Hey mama rock me
G D
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Em C
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
G D C
Hey mama rock me

Verse 2

G D
Runnin' from the cold up in New England
      Em C
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time stringband
   G D
My baby plays the guitar
               C
I pick a banjo now

        G D
Oh, the North country winters keep a gettin' me now
        Em C
Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave
      G
But I ain't a turnin' back
   D C
To livin' that old life no more

Chorus

   G D
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Em C
Rock me mama anyway you feel
G D C
Hey mama rock me
G D
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Em C
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
G D C
Hey mama rock me

Verse 3 (just strum once for the first part of the verse)

G D
Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
           Em
I caught a trucker out of Philly
      C
Had a nice long toke
    G D
But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
   C
To Johnson City, Tennessee

      G D
And I gotta get a move on fit for the sun
          Em
I hear my baby callin' my name
      C
And I know that she's the only one
    G
And if I die in Raleigh
   D C
At least I will die free

Chorus

   G D
So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Em C
Rock me mama anyway you feel
G D C
Hey mama rock me
G D
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Em C
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
G D C
Hey mama rock me

2) Something a little rockier:
ANOTHER GIRL, ANOTHER PLANET (Perrett) by the The Only Ones, 1978

Code:
|: G |D |Em |C :|

G D
I always flirt with death.
Em C G
I look ill, but I don't care about it.
      D
I can face your threats
    Em C G
And stand up straight and tall and shout about it.

            D Em C G D G
I think I'm on another world with you, with you.
          D Em C G D G
I'm on an-other plan-et with you, with you.

G D
You get un-der my skin.
Em C G
I don't find it irr-it-a-ting.
              D
You're always playin’-to-win,
    Em C G
But I won't need re-hab-il-ita-ting, oh no:

            D Em C G D G
I think I'm on another world with you, with you.
          D Em C G D G
I'm on an-other plan-et with you, with you.

(solo: verse+chorus)

G D
Space travel’s in my blood
Em C G
There ain’t no-thing I can do a-bout it.
              D
Long journeys wear me out.
      Em C G
But I know, I can’t live without it, oh no.

            D Em C G D G
I think I'm on another world with you, with you.
          D Em C G D G
I'm on an-other plan-et with you, with you.

G D Em C G
Another girl, is loving you now.
        D Em C
Another planet, is holding you down.
   D G
An-other plan-et.

Hope this gets you up and running!

Good luck, but don't stray into the Dark Side for too long!

thanks for that paul, that is very interesting,
I have been banging out horse with no name em d9/6, three little birds, a d e feelin alright a d and I walk the line, a d e,
thanks for songs you posted will print off if I can,
i'll be on both sides love both instrument for very different reasons

The first songs I learned how to play were Slowpoke by Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Swimming Pool by The Front Bottoms, Heart of Gold by Neil Young and Learning to Fly by Tom Petty. If you want really easy Slowpoke is pretty much G, C, D throughout the entire song and Learning to Fly and Heart of Gold aren't much harder. Also The Front Bottoms are a folk punk band so Swimming Pool is basically single notes and a few power cords. Just find something that really inspires you that isn't too hard and try to learn it. Just remember practice makes perfect. Hope this helps :)
