hello people! welcome to season 95 of the ukulele – my theme for this season is sounds of the seventies – disco, glam rock and abba

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBeKzzjEK-I

ok, now that intro vid is not strictly accurate – because we're gonna be saying HELLO SEVENTIES! not goodbye seventies. and unlike the song in the video, we are gonna be celebrating the marvelousness of the seventies, not (hopefully) saying the seventies were rubbish. however it was the only song I could think of with the word “seventies” in the title, and it's a great song, and it's by yazoo, and I love yazoo. so there you go. it's my intro vid. and it is what it is!

when I look back at the seventies from NOW, I think punk was EVERYTHING. but at the time, when I was just a nipper, knee high to something that was itself probably not very tall, the big things on my little musical horizon were – oh wait you guessed! - disco, glam rock, and abba.

so, I would like you to join me in celebration of these 3 great musical whatsits, as follows...

1. you can post up to three official entries. (choosing freely from the categories.) (ie. you can post 3 disco songs, or one disco or two abba, or one disco one abba one glam, or oh you know on and on and on (as abba would say) - i'm sure you get the picture!)

2. if you can post three vids, and you find you still have the music in you, then you can post one additional bonus entry. (again – choose freely from any of the three categories.)

PRIZES. there will be three prizes – one for first place, one for second place (these will be my first and second fave vids from the official entries), plus a third prize for a song picked at random from all the remaining entries (this time that will include bonuses.)

all three prize winners will get a 70s compilation cd to party and groove to.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS...

you can multitrack and use effects and wotnot and fancy video stuff and all that sort of thing if you want to. if that is your bag.

you can post when it starts being sunday in hawaii, I like to check the day and time there HERE (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=103)

contest ends midnight hawaii time next sunday

BONUS POINTS FOR...

1. wearing eyeliner (but only if you're a bloke.)

2. including a pet or pets in your video. (this has nothing to do with the theme, I know, it's just something I like to see.)

3. songs by the three degrees

4. songs by suzi quatro

any queries or anything that's not clear or anything i'm doing horribly wrong, please post here or PM me.

good luck, have fun - I plan to

and no punching, kicking or gouging.

now – run along, children, and bring me all my favourite songs...

oh... if you need a bit of help thinking of fab songs to bring me, here are a few places to start looking...

some top disco songs (http://rateyourmusic.com/list/TheScientist/top_100_disco_songs__mine_/1/)

wow there isn't a whole bunch of good info on glam rock – anyone else got ideas for links, and lists of artists and songs? until/unless someone comes up with something better here (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/70s-glam-rock-songs/) is a place to start...

and abba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_recorded_by_ABBA)

okie dokie

let the seventies party begin

ooh hold on let it begin in about five more minutes - I just wanna say, I sometimes have trouble posting comments over on youtube... therefore I'm thinking the best thing for me might be to JUST comment over here on the thread, to make life easier for me, and stop me wanting to set light to the computer and chuck it out the window. (or at least to stop me wanting to set light to the computer and chuck it out the window QUITE SO MUCH!) I hope that will be ok with eveyone.

ok

start partying!

"The 70's" as a style shorthand can be quite different from the reality.

Saturday Night Fever came out one year after Never Mind The Bollocks

Years ago, I was invited to a '60s theme party. Everyone else turned up as a hippy. I turned up as a Mod...

i know!

flares and big old super gigantic shirt collars are seen as quintessentially seventies, and yet many people were wearing them, and still even thinking they were cool, into the start of the eighties

not me obviously. oh no. :uhoh: other people

..... flares and big old super gigantic shirt collars are seen as quintessentially seventies...

Only until 1971. By 1972 it was almost impossible to buy flares in a store. I hung on to mine until they fell apart or rotted some time in the 80s.

Will it be alright if I record a song I wrote in the 1970s?

PS Do I get a bonus point for saying I had no idea you'd be old enough to even remember the 1970s!!! ;)

I was introduced to this song by Siouxsie and the Banshees, so for me that is the original of this song ;-). I'm really not into Abba and Disco so don't expect any from me on that front ;). Here is the Passenger by Iggy Pop.

Hey BEVOMU.... as someone whose adolescence coincided with the 1970s, may I suggest that you open out your definition of what makes a 70s song?

In my view, Singer-songwriters and Prog-Rock bands were far more defining of the 1970s than any of the ephemeral disco/glam rock crowd! Very few of the latter are still with us, but most of the former are still going in one shape or form. Quintessential 70s? James Taylor, Melanie, Joni Mitchell, Richard Thompson, Peter Gabriel's Genesis, Yes, The Moody Blues, etc. Other bands that defined the 70s included Free!

I'm not into disco either but the seasons is about meeting the conditions set by the host not suggesting a change to the theme of the season because we think it should be something else.
And the claim that the disco/glam rock crowd was ephemeral makes the theme more interesting.
I think it could be argued that the Stones were very glam at one time. And David Bowie came up when I was looking at glam artists - hardly ephemeral.
So here's my disco attempt with help from some GarageBand monotonous back beat.

I said I was not going to do an Abba song, and in a way I still did not ;). This is my take on Tropical Loveland by Abba, I have never heard this song to my knowledge. I just found some chords and lyrics on the internet and started playing, any resemblance to the original is purely coincidental.

I agree as well. My tastes were formed by a wide range of 70s performers, none of which were either disco artists or ABBA. I can totally get behind having fun with their songs, however, and glam rock doesn't cause me any problems. Question, though, for clarification: Does KISS count as glam rock for the purposes of this competition?

The 70s were also the heyday of electric folk with bands like Pentagle, Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. Although all three started in the late 60s their heyday was mainly the 70s. Richard Thompson came, of course, from Fairport.

The 70s was a time of parenthood for me as my daughters were born in 74 & 76. I didn't buy many records at that time being strapped for cash but two I did buy were Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall - about as far from glam rock, punk and disco as it's possible to get.

The host comes up with a theme, if that is Glam/Abba/Disco under the 70's monicker, then I guess that is what we have to live with?
I mean if somebody comes up with Tom Paxton week we also just go with that right?
I agree there is more 70's music then Glam/Abba/Disco but in the end this is what BEVOMU came up with.

Please, please, please say yes! KISS was considered all kinds of things, but when they started in 1973 in the clubs they were definitely considered glam. In early photos they looked a lot like New York Dolls.

Sorry, didn't mean to get anyone's back up. I was just suggesting BEV opens up the theme. It'll be up to her if she thinks its a good idea. If not, fine. I wasn't mandating anyone to do anything.

The theme is "Sounds of the 70s" - I was just pointing out that was a wider palette than is being suggested. If BEV want to restrict it to only the thre mentioned. I'm fine with that!

xommen – the passenger – great song choice, I LOVE this song! you've done a really super version of it, too, fabulous strumming pattern really rocks it – love it!

pa – boogie fever - I caught boogie fever once – and I never got over it. THANK HEAVENS! this was FABULOUS – you say monotonous back beat - I say a groove that made me wanna get up! and then get on down! and then get up again – oh i'm sure you get the picture! LOVED this, lots of fun, a real floor filler – i'm on my own here right now, but I filled the floor real good even so!

xommen – tropical loveland – wow, xommen, thank you very much for sharing your tropical loveland with me – i'd never heard this song before! I didn't think anyone could teach me something new about abba, but you just did! the seasons really do teach you a thing or two – or a million things or two! I love this, you've done a great version, and thank you for taking the leap into the world of abba for us, and giving me an education - as well as a real musical treat

jazzbanjorex - shining star – OW! (in a good way!) that was FABULOUS! you gave it everything – and so did the snowman light! love the drum track too, it adds a whole new disco dimension – love it! thank you

jazzbonjorex – fox on the run – oh wow that was great! well worth a thousand takes, and it ended up FABULOUS! glad to see the snowman back, and I love your DIY echo with accompanying eyeroll – lots and lots of fun - thank you very much

Do I get a bonus point for saying I had no idea you'd be old enough to even remember the 1970s!!! ;)
yes you do!

to clarify this week's theme - everybody, i think, knows i love punk rock - but although it's seventies, it's not one of this week's categories. i explained in my opening post that this week is about three kinds of music that dominated my musical imagination when i was a kid. i want people to bring all my favourite music from my childhood, put it on a uke, and entertain me with it. the seasons have made me try lots of songs that i would never have sung or played on the uke otherwise. sometimes a theme is exactly your musical cup of tea. sometimes it boggles your mind and takes you into new musical territory. that's one of the things i love about the seasons. if people want to explore other kinds of music from the seventies, then i would be delighted to see that in another season. this week's theme stands

Does KISS count as glam rock for the purposes of this competition?
have you seen what they WEAR???!!!

of course they count! :D

Barbablanca and others - i don't know what to say about an original song you wrote IN the seventies. i appreciate it's from the seventies, but did i groove to it after school? was it part of my musical horizon back in the day? is it disco, glam rock or abba? can i really not tempt you to join the seventies disco / glam rock / abba party with a song from the charts from the time?

a new original song written now or recently ABOUT the seventies. would not be FROM the seventies. so, no

Kinda figured our theme was partially based on stepping out of our comfort zones, and I appreciate that- one of the reasons I am still doing this for sure.
This song is not Disco to me (though it was to many of it's critics), but it was on the list provided in the OP and I could not resist. It was certainly part of the musical landscape and imagination of this six year old when it came out.
I still remember the look of extreme joy on mom's face (wait...is that joy? I dunno? keep singing sis) when my sister and I learned all the words and would sing it endlessly.

While doing some homework for this season I see that The Three Degrees have some quite recent performances - so not so ephemeral after all?
And I do own an Abba album - the one with the helicopter on the cover? Arrivals? I think it had Super Trouper on it which I loved at the time I bought the album.
And even the Sylvers seemed to have dined out for quite a few years on Boogie Fever. I wish I could be so ephemeral!

I found that too. I have dots for Dancing Queen somewhere and the words tend to come in just after the beat. I found it tricky until I abandoned the dots and did it by ear. The dots were very useful in sorting out the melody, but your ears are much more useful for timing.

No problem. I needed to sort out what your categories included. Nevertheless, there were one or two that I would have thought were definitely glam, but were described as "influenced by glam". Adam Ant was one which particularly sprang to mind. I definitely saw him as glam rock. I assume your boundaries have some flexibility.

The 70s are a bit of haze for me. With a young family, we were strapped for cash so I wasn't buying records. I was also building my career but spent the mid 70s doing something I wasn't really suited to so it was a difficult time for me all round. It was only when I moved to Middlesbrough at the end off the 70s that I found my feet.

indeed

adam was hardcore punk and then became more - i hesitate to say mainstream - certainly more accessible to pop fans. i think the ants' later stuff would be classified as new wave?

i mean, when i think disco, i think sylvester and the weather girls! i don't think rod stewart - i had to go look it up when TCK posted "do ya think i'm sexy" and yes! it's listed as a disco song! i think if we extend the definition to anything you might have struggled up off your chair to bop to with tricia from accounts at the office party, it's gonna be pretty inclusive! and that's ok!

Ah, the memories... It's funny to think that even 36 years later "disco" inspires passionate reactions from those of us who lived through it.

I had a cabin fever snow day yesterday, which gave me time to assemble a GarageBand multi-track. It uses uke basses with metal strings in two different octaves, a tenor with an Aquila Red low G set, a sopranino tuned to F, and a Dolphin cranked high tension to an open E for the closing arpeggios.

The video is a pantomime done after the recording was finished.

Strawberry Letter 23, the 12" 45 rpm "disco" version on red vinyl is one of only two disco records I ever bought.
The early days of disco had some appeal to me as an expansion of funk and soul music, with the "slap and pop" bass lines that originated with funk bassists like Bootsy Collins.

I was and still am quite negative about the effect disco had on killing live music in clubs.

The discussion of what constitutes a disco song or artist is interesting. On my Looking For Mr Goodbar soundtrack, along with Donna Summer are Bill Withers, Boz Scaggs and Diana Ross. It was the zeitgeist of the era, and perhaps a way to get some radio play and sales.

I'm sure Boz Scaggs never sold more records than he did with "Lowdown."
And not only Rod The Mod Stewart, but the Rolling Stones had disco-flavored songs.

This is probably more based on the Communards version then Thelma's since I never heard that. But mostly it is a wildly experimental version as I tried to incorporate both a shaker egg and my new foot tambourine, I'm warning you its wild ;-). It was on the disco list, this is an attempt to totally destroy: Thelma Houston - Don't leave me this way

I tuned this uke down to E A C# F# so I could actually sort of sing the chords I found.

Here's my first one. A bit of disco to start with me thinks, although you'll have to forgive my girlie Barry White voice but there is more chance of me winning the lottery than singing down that low. ;-)
Keeping with the latest craze I've added a bit of drum beat as background with some Garageband percussion.
Now then, Glam Rock next I think but I tend not to keep eyeliner at hand. Sorry about that Lynda.

ooh Tootler that is a great link. thank you

and now on to the latest tunes on radio rock lynda's world FM...

bonesigh – staying alive - rock on, tiger! GREAT song choice, super enthusiastic rendition, excellent support from backing artists - lots and lots and LOTS of fun, and some really excellent uke-ing - fabulous stuff! thank you!

~dave~~wave~ strawberry letter 23 - VERY CLEVER bit at the end with the needle stuck in the groove! love that! and speaking of groove ;-) this was absolutely FABULOUS - super-accomplished playing of a gazillion ukes and uke-based instruments, and even talent to spare to throw some disco-shaped shapes. love it!

frisbee fred – rebel rebel - VERY NICE! really super uke-ing there, totally captured the musical momentum (you can tell i don't know my musical terminology!) of the original - absolutely love it! thank you!

xommen – don't leave me this way - i actually love the communards version of this song, so however you were gonna go about, it was gonna be a hit with me! your take has oodles of energy - i love the percussion, i love the strumming, i love your singing - I love everything about it!

frisbee fred – love is in the air - I totally agree with what you say about the importance of the beat - people who've added a good disco drum beat have really ramped up the disco factor on their songs to 11 ! :-) and this is no exception - great stuff, i really loved it

UkeyDave – you're the first my last my everything – GROWL! barry white! FABULOUS song choice - and a fabulous version too - super beat, it has me bopping - you have passed the bop test with flying colours and THEN some! really super stuff, thank you so much for doing this great song

UkeCan1 – rock the boat - ah. skipping a season. that old thing! easy to say - hard to do! lol! when i did a disco number (band of gold for season 93) i managed to make it sound like a country and western song. i suspect to absolutely guarantee disco success one really needs a drum backing track and a flashing snowman light, but even without these ingredients, this is a very successful disco cover! great song choice, super vid - thank you!

Can't help but notice the posts on the page about asking for this song. Didn't see them until I came here to post this. In my year+ contributing to this community, I seem to be the guy who posts the obvious entries to the theme at hand. Doesn't bother me. Here's my entry for two categories: I Was Made for Loving Uke, Baby:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QArPpCOLJA8

Ran into a bit of challenge this week for my entry. About a week ago, my video camera broke. It could still record, but the flip-out LCD screen stopped working. I could record, but had no way of seeing what I was recording. Brought my camera into 'IT City' here in BKK, a big electronics chain in Thailand. They said they'd have to send my camera out: two to three weeks minimum for repair.

Fortunately for myself and you all, I also bought a new phone this week. It's an off-brand smartphone, the kind you can only buy in Asia, from a company with the unfortunate name of i-Mobile. I-mobile. Really? Immobile. Never mind.

SO the phone can record, but how was I going to do that without someone to hold the phone while I played uke? I don't yet have a tripod that can hold it (although that may be something I'll get soon). A-ha! Place it on top of my clothing armoire and get a bird's eye view of me playing ukulele!

The camera angle is out of necessity but also an homage to our host this week.

Of course across the Atlantic......................
WHAT? You mean there is glam-life ACROSS the atlantic? OMG I thought the UK was the centre of the universe when it came to glam rock ;-)
Seriously though - I do love all these American artists but I don't think Glam Rock has the same cultural meaning in the USA as it does in the UK. It's really interesting and fascinating to see the different categorisations of the two sides of the Atlantic on this one. After all we are culturally miles apart sometimes on music I think. Lots of great British bands never see the light of day in the States do they and I think that shows how music doesn't always transcend across even the closest linked cultures. Just my two penneth.

okie dokie, partial catch up on today's musical geniusness, i'll be back later to watch more of your fabulous vids, people, but in the meantime...

Shady Wilbury – come up and see me - if wikipedia says something, it must be true! everybody knows that! but seriously - i'm totally good with this classification - glam is as glam does! or something! i have to admit, i really love this song – so, thank you so much for doing it for this season – you've done a really lovely cover - and i always get a kick out of seeing paloma! great stuff!

decaturcomp – baby's on fire – YOU're on fire this season! that was lots of fun! i did indeed strum along on my baritone, so thank you very much for adding that whole extra dimension of interactive musical marvelousness! great song choice, fabulous playing and singing, as usual - wonderful stuff, thank you very much!

Tootler - I have a dream – what a super ( trouper ;-) ) song choice! and you've given us a really lovely rendition. we're getting lots of quite energetic dance tempos for the disco and glam songs, so how wonderful now to get a change of pace for this mellow and beautifully executed cover. thank you very much - love it!

the ukelites – night fever - this is marvellous! from the rather lovely shots of the rather lovely john travolta getting dressed (rather lovely-ly) for a night out, to your fab disco style arm flourishes at the end - it's just wonderful! a brilliant song choice and a brilliant cover of it - thank you, guys!

TCK – dandy in the underworld - this is really lovely. an unusually delicate song from t rex, given an equally delicate touch by your good self – a great song choice, and a really super cover - thank you very much!

Cosmic Dance Parties are the best… nearly on a par with the gyrations of the Celestial Gavotte.

The 70s were not just about glam, disco and ABBA .. .

We've been working on this collaboration for a couple of weeks. We all like Richard Thompson, and this was actually a minor hit in the 70s. This video started with barablanca laying down the basic tracks in Catalonia, then I added in some more uke and vocals, and uke4ia threw in backing vocals and a very tasty lead part. We all did videos for our parts, and I put together a background video with photos and videos of bright lights at night (one of my favorite image types) that I had grabbed over the past 5 years or so from all over the world. I dropped in our performance videos where appropriate, and this is the result.

We are all pretty happy with how it came out, and I think it's worth the time to watch.

Bonus! Wow, a rare happy song from Richard T. Nicely done, you guys! I was thinking to one day host a season of collaborations with other Seasonistas. Few things make me happier than seeing this kind of connection being produced behind the scenes. Very inspiring! What a wonderful world we live in that lets us do this kind of thing across the continents, and share it with a whole community of others in far-flung places and times. What a lovely thing to wake up to.

Who would you most want to collaborate with in my mythical future Season? What song would you do?
[I'm told the appropriate place to respond to this question is here: http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?86811-Seasonistas-jamming-with-Seasonistas&highlight=Seasonistas+jamming. If you're moved to respond, please go there. I don't mean to hijack Lynda's Season!]

So sorry for going off on tangents again! I'm told I'm hijacking the thread (and last week's as well). I'm new here, just learning appropriate behavior and etiquette ... I most definitely don't want to offend anyone or distract from the fun of the Season. Very sorry if I've done that.

I'd love to hear any responses to my question about collaborations over here: http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/...nistas+jamming (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?86811-Seasonistas-jamming-with-Seasonistas&highlight=Seasonistas+jamming).

Hi all,

I was never a disco freak and only Bowie ever rocked my Glam boat. Besides, for me that period marked the beginning of the end of the hippy dream. The communes I had been on the outer rim of collapsed in acrimony and the alternative communities I weaved in and out of were destroyed by commercialism or ineptitude. The Beatles had broken up; nobody seemed to love my beloved Melanie any more; Joni was singing about the life of rich bitches, rather than producing her brilliant soul-searching confessionals; I was always in love with the wrong person and... well.... and a long list of etceteras.

So, here I was, in the Middle of the decade, reflecting on being the grand old age of 21 and how my friends from those days were all going their own ways and settling down in one way or another. Even Lennon had sang "The dream is over!"

My response was to realise that this was perhaps inevitable, we were all on the train to the future and even if we could reach a turn plate and be shunted off into a sideline or two, we'd still be limited to the direction those rails into the future would take us.

From this gloomy conclusion came this rather fun song. I hope you enjoy it. I'm sure most of you could add a few verses about friends of your own whose paths went off in odd directions compared to your shared pasts.

Soon after I'd written this, Dylan did it all much better with "Tangled Up in Blue" - a song I am still in awe of.

But anyway, here is "Stuck on the Turn Plate" as a Bonus for this week.

thank you guys for sharing that over here!

barbablanca, it was really fun to see you doing a cover - have you thought of setting up a second youtube channel, where you can post the occasional cover when you feel moved to? any copyright matches wouldn't impact on your main originals channel, then... just a thought!

Bonus!
not quite! only disco, glam rock and abba are going on the playlists, and that includes the bonus playlists, but i did tell barbablanca and and greenie they were very welcome to post an original song, or a song by another seventies artist or in another seventies style here, but it would be just for fun

I have a photo of John Travolta

here is "Stuck on the Turn Plate" as a Bonus for this week.
that was great! thanks for sharing it with us here. it doesn't count as an official bonus, though (it won't be on the bonus playlist) because it's not by the specified artists or from the specified kinds of music, but i'm so glad you posted it here, i hope you're happy with it just being a "just for fun" post - it was a treat to listen to, and have you join my seventies party!

pabrizzer – ALLEGEDLY! - we love to boogie - WHO ARE YOU? YOU CLEAN SHAVEN IMPOSTER! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH PA??? this is just great, a fabulous cover of an absolute glam classic - I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE, BUT I'M LOVING WHAT YOU DO! lol! ;-)

greyghost - bennie y los jets - wow! this is just great! very clever strumming really keeps the tempo and feel of the original – it's a super song choice and you've done a truly fabulous cover – it's really (glam) rocking – you did have me singing along – and I love the feather boas! lol! i love it, thank you!

The little time we did have, we dedicated to getting a song recorded. When I saw the themes for this week I immediately thought of David Bowie. ABBA released two Spanish language singles in 1979 to the Latin American market, both were big hits, and were followed the next year by an entire album of Spanish versions of some of their other songs. This is the Spanish version of I Have a Dream, or Estoy Soρando.

The auto-focus on my camera was going crazy, and given that this video wouldn't be much to look at anyway, I decided to consider this an intentional special effect. :)

This is NOT an entry. This is NOT a bonus. This is a GLAM ROCK singalong/screamalong. BirdsEyeView asked me to do this but I don't really have the time to perfect it so instead I've done this karaoke version (i am playing the uke but its drowned out by my singing/screaming and the song itself so apologies for that).
Mott the Hoople were one of those bands who epitomised Glam Rock and I think this is without doubt their best. They saved the best till last and Ian Hunter wrote this and the band performed it as the last song in their set just before Ian Hunter left and Mott the Hoople were no more. This track is a fitting end to a great band. I saw them live in March 1974 and they always evoke such fond memories of my adolescence.
This karaoke video is probably my worst vocal performance of all time (it's really not in my key) but I just love it so much I really don't care lol. I'm sure there will be a lot of folks on this forum who have never heard of this track or indeed have heard of Mott the Hoople so if only one person is introduced to a new song they enjoy then I will be an extremely happy bunny. The lyrics and chords are here (http://www.hunter-mott.com/tablature/saturday_gigs_4.html) and I strongly urge you to watch the version WITHOUT my screaming and accompanied by some great pictures here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NIrPVd79GE)

Here is a glam rock entry; "Love is the Drug" originally by Roxy Music. Though Roxy Music are categorised as glam, I always felt they were more sophisticated than most glam groups. "Suave Rock" maybe. I really liked their 1982 album "Avalon" but that's outside our period, otherwise I might have gone for "Jealous Guy". You'll just have to make do with this instead.

http://youtu.be/MMTMvHnInks

It is a one take job. There are places where I could improve it but I thought if I tried another take, I would only mess up somewhere else.

This will likely be my last entry for this season. I have things to do and I haven't really found anything in the disco category that appeals and will work for me.

I've always liked this one by the Gibb brothers. This season gave me the opportunity to learn it. I'm visiting my daughter and all I have to record on is my netbook, so sorry for the quality, but I had fun learning and playing it.

I got my first "third party warning" for my song in this season," Merry Christmas Everybody" video. Should I take the video down or dispute or acknowledge. I have no idea what to do...Any advice??? And how do I avoid this in the future? Is it the "Title" they grab from? What should I be doing different?

Is it "Matched Third Party Content"? If so, acknowledge and move on. It just means someone wants to monetize your video, and after all, it is not your property. Only need to worry if it's a "Copyright Strike"

As long as you're recording covers, you are likely to get copyright strikes. As long as it's just "Matched third party content", there's nothing to worry about. Just "acknowledge" and move on. As Matty Dee says, it's just the copyright owner - or their agent - seeking to monetise the video or at least to have their copyright recognised. There's little you can do to prevent these strikes. The bots they use are able to look into the video itself so avoiding the name of the song in the title or description of the video will have no effect. Nor do I think putting in a "fair use" disclaimer - a provision we don't have in our copyright act, btw. As I understand it, fair use is decided on a case by case basis so the more aggressive copyright holders will just ignore it.

Hi guys
Not sure if this is allowed, but I planned to record my track this evening but my wife has taken my camera I think so I have not been able to do a video. Here is a multitracked version of what I planned, but audio only.
Hopefully I'll do a vido tomorrow but that will only be one track of Uke and Vox.

I don't seem to be able to embed the soundcloud track :^(

I got all my friends to play in the band. [yes it's all me, I don't have any friends]

Well, I thought this would be a week I would give a pass, but then, thanks to Geoff, I saw the list of artists considered 'glam', and there were quite a few in there that I liked. My one concession to the topic was the donning of a purple Aloha shirt - sorry folks, that's as glam as I get.

This is a Bowie song I have loved for a long time. A few ukes were used, but none were harmed in the production of this video. I hope I did it some justice.

Okay, not my finest moment... I mean, it is Disco, right?

This video gets to call the TCK Full Disclosure Rule! After all, I was a DJ in the late 70s - Disco is why I started listening to Country Music!

So of course, this is a Disco song. No drums, no back up singers, no throbbing bass... Just this one, one take.

And here's another Disco, with the patented "I don't know what I'm doing, but it sounds fine to me" treatment - although this one did get two takes, because the print was too small for me to read through the trifocals. But you know what? I'm still younger than the original performer is, so who cares?

This is also one of the ONLY Disco songs I ever remember liking when it was new. I like the singer's attitude, and she didn't sound like anyone else - heck her voice was deeper than any of the BeeGees, so More Power To Her!

Hi All,
I've had a busy week, just snuck out of work to do this one (I am not addicted to the Seasons)
It's by a definitively Glam band, but it's late in their career, and kinda sounds like it could be an Abba song.
I have always thought this is the catchiest chorus of all time, except maybe more so when The Sweet apply their ludicrous harmonies (http://youtu.be/zmlKjO4juCo)and hairstyles.

The first tune that popped into my head when this Season's theme was announced. This is my glam-rock contribution. A surprisingly sophisticated little number, all things considered (it really is written in the Mixolydian mode with occasional borrowings from the parallel Aeolian :) ).

The original's in G (D Mixolydian), way too high for me. I had to transpose it down to Bb (G Mixolydian) which is why my fellow pUKE, Cici found it a little tricky to sing along. Not that we were drunk, exactly, you understand, but it is undeniably true that we had had drink taken.

This is taking a lifetime to load, and I've a ways to drive tomorrow (last night Norwich, tonight Bristol, supporting Bad Manners once again). So give it another 20 minutes (say 1am GMT). Disco number to follow - eek!

Wow, this has got to be one of my most disappointing entries but, since I put so much work into it I'm posting anyway. One of us decided to tape the vocals separately. One of us just couldn't sync vocals. One of us worked too hard today on Christmas decorating. One of us needs to groom the dogs!!

Well, here's "One of Us" by Abba, such as it is. You get to sing the song (:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI6ZN6mtW4k&feature=youtube_gdata_player

They passed me by, all of those great romances
You were, I felt, robbing me of my rightful chances
My picture clear, everything seemed so easy
And so I dealt you the blow
One of us had to go
Now it's different, I want you to know

One of us is crying
One of us is lying
In her lonely bed
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead
One of us is lonely
One of us is only
Waiting for a call
Sorry for herself, feeling stupid feeling small
Wishing she had never left at all

I saw myself as a concealed attraction
I felt you kept me away from the heat and the action
Just like a child, stubborn and misconceiving
That's how I started the show
One of us had to go
Now I've changed and I want you to know

One of us is crying
One of us is lying
In her lonely bed
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead
One of us is lonely
One of us is only
Waiting for a call
Sorry for herself, feeling stupid feeling small
Wishing she had never left at all
Never left at all

Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead
One of us is lonely
One of us is only
Waiting for a call

My pillow must've known today was glam uke day, as you can see from my hair in this video. Also, my brilliant wife, Jessica, was kind and cool enough to do my make-up (sadly, the glitter didn't show up well on video; luckily, the eye make-up and cheek star show up quite well). Rex did this one earlier in the week, but I didn't have any other glam ideas, so I've been waiting to check out Rex's version til after I post this Sweet version.

Hi Seasonistas! I'm back! Had to stop by Lynda's party.

It's been kind of a challenging month or so (in both good and less-good ways), and I've really not even had a chance to watch any videos, let alone make any. I sort of forgot how to do it, not that I was ever all that good at it, and here I think I've cut off the top of my head. I probably should have thrown in the towel on this one, but I decided to use my own three-take rule and give it my best shot. I even got my act together just far enough to be able to squeak out a few high(ish) notes before noon, but then I realized there is no Daylight Savings Time in Hawai'i and the time difference is now eleven hours, not twelve. So I'm late, but this is Lynda's first Season as Hostess and there was no way I was going to not show up. I suppose I'm in time to do some dishes?

Oh, and it seems the Forum is doing that thing where I can only look at the first page of posts. I click on subsequent pages but it won't go to them. That happened to me once before, and I think it happened to some other people, but it's happening again so I have no idea what has gone on in this thread since, like, Thursday. Maybe Wednesday.

I've missed you all and I'm very happy to be back. Here's my little thing, which I know is late but maybe I can post it in the Misfits thread? Is that right? I think I can do that. Here is "Heart of Glass," by Blondie, which is indeed disco. In a new-wave kind of way. It has Studio 54 in the video, and Debbie used to hang out there a lot so it counts. Or it would count if it weren't an hour late.

Thanks everybody, especially Lynda! Hope you enjoy it.

season 95 – RESULTS

first of all, i'd like to say a HUGE thank you to EVERYONE who threw themselves so enthusiatically into this season

I just hope you've had half as much fun – or even a tenth or a hundredth as much fun – making your vids, as I had watching them!

to the results...

everyone deserves a prize

because everyone was just SO GREAT

however I don't have enough prizes for that (as the old season-hosting saying goes - there just AREN'T ENOUGH singing toads!)

so, out of the huge ocean of colourful disco, glam, and abba tropical fish that you all were (wot?) I am going to just have to try and fish out my uber favourites

now... I have a major problem here because my uber UBER fave vid from the whole contest was submitted as a bonus entry.

personally, I feel there is only one thing I can do about that, and that is to award it first prize anyway. I apologise if this is a huge hosting faux pas.

so...

here we go...

FIRST PRIZE goes to - xommen - I was made for loving you

SECOND PRIZE goes to – grey ghost – bennie y los jets

THIRD PRIZE – RANDOM DRAW FROM ALL ENTRIES INCLUDING BONUSES – southside mike - eagle

and finally there are some additional songs that I would like to give a particular special mention to, for standing out even from a field (i've moved on from my ocean simile now...) where EVERYONE was ALREADY simply outstanding... they are...

hucklelele – when will I see you again

max 2173 – hot stuff

theOnlyUkeThatMatters – le freak

bonesigh et al – one of us 2

and rustyy – devil gate drive

and a big thank you to EVERYONE entered - because really, if there WERE enough singing toads... er... in my field... or was it my ocean??? well wherever – EVERYONE would be a winner

everyone IS a winner, in my book

thank you ALL for making this such a wonderful season to be host of

now the only question remaining is...

how do I close this season?

how DO you close the seventies?

I think the only logical way to close the seventies, is with the eighties...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hrj0aSht808

*first, second and third prize winners – please PM me your addresses so I can send you your prizes*

THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE

This is awesome! Congratulations to everyone who entered this season--what a fun bunch of songs this was! The Seasons are really helping me come out of my shell (I'm really rather shy--nobody ever believes me when I say that, but it's true).

mythinformed - i rather met my "waterloo" with the judging. each new "arrival" of a vid blew my tiny mind and and very quickly my scoring system was "under attack". (i was giving everyone marks out of ten from the start to help me sort things later, but i very quickly found i was awarding LOTS of eleven, twelves, thirteens, fourteens and fifteens!) it didn't help that i just absolutely love EVERYBODY'S songs - "i do i do i do i do i do"!

Thanks BEV for my very first honorable mention, and thanks for a wonderful season. Do I recall reading you were nervous about saying good vid, good vid etc etc. Well you were a fantastic host, hope you do it again soon

i know!

i'm waiting to see if i get a kick in the pants from any of the season luminaries!

but i think we're allowed to be a bit flexible

i HOPE we're allowed to be a bit flexible! :uhoh:

No probs, Lynda. You're the host you decide the rules and the winners by whatever criteria you want.

Congrats to the winners, btw.

Congratulations to all the winners and honorable mentions. Thanks, Lynda, for including me in that funky, glamorous group.

Thanks to everyone that participated in this great Season---the three challenges brought out some extra terrific performances. And an extra big straight-from-the-volunteer-Seasons-coordinator THANK YOU to BEVOMU for stepping up to host the 95th Season just a few days in advance---wonderful challenges, fun spirit in the thread, and plenty of terrific music---woohoo!
