I was just strumming some chords when my C string snapped at the tuning peck and is now to short to put back on, so I'm going to need a new one.
Any suggestions for what string to get/where to get it?
I am a relatively new player, and my ukulele is a Gretsch 9110, in case you were wondering.
Also, do you think my technique is at fault for the string break?
Thanks!

Did you have a low G on it before? And it might have just been a faulty string unless you're strumming with a lot of force. High G would be fine if you like the sound of high G.

I don't quite understand what High G/Low G means. If you're referring to the tuning, the G string is higher in tone than the C and E string, and yes, I bought it that way, if that's what you mean.

As it apparently came strung with Aquila Nylgut, get a new regular set (7U is what you need) of these. Or better get two sets to have one spare...

If you're unfamiliar with changing strings, simply take a couple of pictures from different angles as a reference on how to tie the new strings to the bridge.
And be assured: changing strings is not rocket science.

High G is the more common tuning arrangement, also known as re-entrant tuning because the G string is a higher tone (higher frequency) than the C string.

Low g (or linear tuning) has the g string tuned one octave down, so that the strings go from low to high as you go from top to bottom.

some resources:

If you did not know which your uke was, then it was most certainly re-entrant. Linear is less common and you would have to ask for it.

Thanks guys, hopefully I won't have such a nightmare next time!

Also, before putting the new string on, insure there isn't a sharp/rough edge on the hole ends on the tuning peg that needs lightly filed or sanded. It's possible that damaged the string and why it broke.

These should help:

You can get by without the winder, and for uke strings nail clippers work as well as wire cutters.

There are a bazillion tutorials out there. the timber hitch is an easy knot to tie.

You mean the tuning pegs> ? hmmm yes get a new set...and try alot of different strings... good luck and happy strummings... elderly music and strings by mail man.....

Many local shops should have strings if they have ukes, though most don't have much of a choice. If not, elderly music or ebay are great resources for strings and you've been given links to some great tutorials on changing the strings. It really isn't as hard as it seems. Even I have done it a couple of times, just take pictures of the existing set up and find the tutorial that matches your set up.

Get a new set. I have Savarez on my 9121 and they play great, nice full sound. I use the Fremont Soloist wound low G (the one low G works on soprano, concert and tenor) I use it on all my ukes for low G. If not low G, then the you can just get the Savarez 140R set here: http://www.stringsbymail.com/store/ukulele-strings-684/savarez-ukulele-strings-1130/

You can order the low G Fremont Soloist from Elderly.com online, prices are decent.

good idea about smoothing out the bridge and nut string channel,my problem is that i have both the kala 6 and 8 string ukes and the high c string snaps, i use aquilla sets, and i bring all the tension up equally until i am in tune, then i back off the high c and a strings till they play flat, and i let them sit over night like that.only to re-stretch them in the a.m. i do this for a week to break in brand new aquilla nylguts (i know its anul ),but at$20 a set you need to be.since im here does anyone know if there are single high c strings available,i know there is the single low g,help,toddir58 a newbie
