Agustín Lara, perhaps Mexico's most famous composer and lyricist, often combined ranchera and bolero styles with elements of foxtrot, tango, blues, and early jazz. This song is his ode to his home city of Veracruz.

I added the English translation captions with YouTube video editing.

 
Thanks for this dougF. Nice. I'm a newb (3 months into the Uke - I love it! I've always liked Mexican music; rural/folk/ballads, etc. Your mention of Agustin Lara has given me more music to explore. Hope someday to play some of his work on the uke.

There are definitely some rich veins in Mexican music to be mined, and the city of Veracruz seems central to much of it, playing a role similar to New Orleans. The well-known song, "La Bamba" originated there, among others.
