Hi,

I want to get my hands on some very small tuning pegs. I want to build an almost headless ukulele but to do so, I need some small tuning I pegs. Also , I'd be interested in some knobless ones like those used in captain ukulele backpacker (seen here http://captainukuleles.co.nz/UU.html)

Cheers

Are they not zither pegs/pins.
You use a tool to adjust them.

Awesome! Thanks. I didn't know they had a name. Any idea of where I can get them? Also, do you know of an alternative where I wouldn't need a tool?

Great! The info from you two is much appreciated

Just take into account that you have to physically turn pegs with your fingers. Too small and too close together and it can become very awkward to actually turn them. I guess that's why the Zither pins and key aren't such a bad idea when it comes to very compact designs.

Didn't "Prof Chris" come up with a mini design for tuners on his famous "micro uke" ?

I did, and they worked (rather to my surprise).

3mm brass set screws, 4mm and 5mm brass tubing, 4mm brass washers, home-made leather washers and some wood scraps for the tuner knobs.

The set screw fits inside the 4mm tubing, which fits inside the 5mm. Cross-halve the 4mm tubing so that it meshes and locks together, solder one end to the screw head, solder a piece of 5mm tube on top for the tuner post. Cut slot for strings. Glue the other end of the 4mm tubing into the knob. Use a length of the 5mm tubing as bushing inside the peghead. Washers to smooth out the action and get friction, tighten nut.

A picture probably explains best, but Flickr (where I keep them) is down. Once it's back up the pictures should appear below:
