:smileybounce:Happy Second Birthday to the Seasons:music::cheers:

I just read a post by chrimess (Christian, who sired this good thing) saying this season marks the completion of the second year of the Seasons.
That means that next week it will begin its THIRD YEAR.
I have been here since season 39 and have only not done an entry when I was hosting.
I believe Silly Dave and TheOnlyUkeThatMatters are now the only seasonistas to have a perfect participation record.

I would love to see a big roll up of ‘old’ and new seasonistas this week to celebrate TWO YEARS of the Seasons!
And if you have never posted before please come and join the fun.

So -

Throw your hat into the ring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTCyGED4ifM
Hat songs.

Songs with head wear in the title = 2 entries in the hat.
Songs substantially about a hat/hats = 2 entries in the hat.
Songs by a band with a hat in their name = 2 entries in the hat.
Just a passing mention of a hat = 1 entry in the hat.

No, these don’t accumulate so you’ll either get 1 or 2 entries in the hat.

If you do the same song as someone else that’s OK but you will only get ONE entry in the hat.

Only one official “Hat” entry please but…

Bonus Songs – Things worn other than hats.
As many bonus songs as you like about other forms of attire – shirts, belts, shoes, etc, but NOT hats please. No prize for the bonus songs just the fun of sharing some music.
If you can’t find a HAT song TWO bonus songs about other attire will still get your name in the hat.

The ‘draw from the hat’ prize for official entries will be a brand new black wool felt Homburg hat from eBay.

Hats include cap, beret, beanie, Stetson, Akubra, derby, bowler, fedora, sombrero, visor, boater, busby, deerstalker, fez, glengarry, karakul, kepi, kippah, yarmulke, kofia, non la, pakol, songkok, tam o’shanter, trilby, helmet, top hat, mitre, bonnet, crown, panama, homburg, shtreimel, toque, chullo, chupalla, slouch hat, barretina, hennin, caubeen, bicorne, tricorne, cloche, etc.

But NOT veils, scarves, ribbons, etc – these would be OK for bonus songs but not for the hat list.

Please state that the song is for this season somewhere.

And NEW ukulele recordings for this season only please.
Multi-tracking is fine if that’s your thing.

Please don't post your entry on this tread until 12:01 am Sunday Hawaii time. And the season will end at Midnight Sunday night Hawaii time (16th Feb I think).

For the record – I have conceded that SillyDave has a more complete hat collection than mine – he has a fez, a boater and some impressive sombreros. I am also down a well travelled Akubra Bronco which Barbablanca now wears occasionally because I traded it for a couple of (treasured) caganers.

And – You can leave your hat on.

Also - I’d really love it if you added a song to the Pete Seeger Appreciation thread on the Links and Videos board if you haven’t already done so and you’ve got the time.
I’ve had the hat idea going for a while but this came so close to being the Pete Seeger season.

Some band names for those who don't want to do their homework.

Men Without Hats.
Little Hat Jones - lots of blues.
And I just discovered
The Tin Hat Trio who do just fabulous stuff. Check out Lauren's Lullaby (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h7F6AmqHfA) for a great listen.
The Stetsons
I've just done a very short search and some of you seasonistas continually surprise me with your prodigious musical knowledge.

This not and ENTRY, this is not this is not a Bonus It is a curiosity
Photos of ukulele players who I came across on youtube when I was just starting to
play the ukulele. A surprising number of them wear hats when performing... and I was
mighty proud to get CHAPEAUX in the lyrics :-)

Lyrics (Repeating chords C F C G Am F C G)

If you want to play the Uke
You've got to have a certain look
You don't even need a FLUKE
To get ahead you need a hat
Some say get the proper strings
or Koa wood or other things
It's all roundabouts and swings
To get ahead you need a hat
To play real well get a cap
Or a helmet with a chin strap
Without headgear you'll look a sap
To get ahead you need a hat
To play like Zoe wear a bow
A big bee-hive will steal the show
Aldrene always wears a Chapeaux
To get ahead you need a hat
Longish hair does the trick
an bald is good if it looks slick
A mean beanie makes a marverick
To get ahead you need a hat
So this is my advice to you
Wear a CHE beret of midnight blue
and pull your baseball cap askew
To get ahead you need a hat.

The Friday hatman occasionally sings songs.
For the past several years every Friday he has posted a video in the hat which he will wear for the whole day.

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLZh7RNVF2tY5mMN7vkHkOg?feature=g-high

I normally wear a hat whenever I go out, but someone did comment when I posted my first Uke video that the most surprising thing about it was that I wasn't wearing a hat! I don't think she had ever seen me without one!

Gee Ray. You are such a consummate performer. Thanks so much for starting the season off with such a well chosen song done so darn tootin' well! Definitely 2 entries in the hat for this beauty!

And now that we have an official entry to season 104, that means, no matter what happens Christian's baby (we call The Seasons) is 2.
Woo Hoo!
Next week marks the beginning of the THIRD year of this fun.

Great theme, Pabrizzer!

My hat is off to you.

It's not a hat as great as the late Manny Gabbage could have made. I actually bought two hats today just to use in making this video (I can't imagine how they'd be useful otherwise unless I decided to become a rice farmer or cruise the gay part of town as a cowboy daddy). Thailand is great for buying hats! Both hats together cost me $7 US!

Kinda sad song about a hat maker. There must be just about a song about everything.

This is "Homburg" by Procol Harum. It's probably my favorite cover song to play for an audience. It was the band's next single after "Whiter Shade of Pale", a big hit in the UK but little-known in the US. The hat I'm wearing is an Uzbeki doppi or doppilar, which I was given by a cousin who emigrated from Tashkent to the US.

a hat (tall)

a gown (tattooed)

his hair (long)

a star (bright) (on his forehead)

a cat (black) (on his shoulder)

and an enigmatic smile

most of these things are in the song

and some are even items of clothing

Well, given the high stakes and the rules, I decided to go looking for a hat song rather than do Hats Off To Larry again. And I found this great number from Lyle Lovett, full of his traditional sly humor. I changed the lyrics a bit to fit one of the only hats I have. Thanks for the participation, shoutout, brizz. chrimess's original Six Seasons contest was a blast, and when the Seasons continued, I promised myself I'd do a video each week as long as the challenges kept coming. I never thought that meant I'd still be making a video every week two years later. I'm glad to say it's still a pleasure and a privilege to make and share music with the Seasonistas week after week. Let's keep it going, everyone!

I had some trouble finding a hat song that would work. Luckily, my internet-savvy wife, Jessica, found a short, sweet song for me. I had to record it on day one of the Season in honor of our host.

My sister and I used to watch these shows on Saturday afternoons, back in the old days:) You know when TV shows were black and white and everyone in the house watched the same program. I am sure our brothers spent lots of time outdoors just so they didn't have to watch these wonderful movies with us. If you want to see how it is really done look up Bing Crosby or Judy Garland singing it. This is just my silly version:)

That's the danger of allowing YT to 'fix' your 'shaky' video. If you move around in the frame, it reckons that's 'cos your camera's been moving, not you. So it offers to 'fix' your movement by trying to create a fixed frame of reference. So if you sway back and forth in front of the camera, it will make the walls sway back and forth too. Do you remember Mattyukuholic's entry for UkeyDave's Season? Everytime he swayed toward the camera, the walls swayed with him. It happened once in one of librainian's entries too. The effect got quite trippy at times. I'm pretty sure that's what's happened here.

there is some kind of gizmo style thing people can do to their videos to make their eyes look big, or make their faces look funny, i think the lovely lady did it purpose!

From 1668 John Graham, the laird of Claverhouse was at the forefront of Royalist repression of the Covenanters,
for which he was called "Bluidy Clavers" (Bloody Claverhouse) by his covenanting opponents. In 1688 he was made
1st Viscount of Dundee by James VII of Scotland (James II of England). When William of Orange overturned James
in 1689 in what was called the Glorious Revolution, Claverhouse was one of the few Scottish nobles who remained loyal
to James. After trying to influence the Convention of Estates of Scotland on James's behalf, at some danger to himself,
he led his cavalry out of Edinburgh to carry on the struggle in the field and was killed at the moment of victory in the
battle of Killiecrankie (1689). His forces were subsequently defeated at the Battle of Dunkeld. Over a century later he
was immortalised in a poem by Sir Walter Scott which was later adapted into a song... "The bonnets of Bonnie Dundee"

For us Brits, mention of a Homburg calls forth just one image :)

This is nicely treated Rob. It is a particularly good hat song but as hat songs are fairly limited I did ask that you only do one hat song this season. Someone else may have searched the internet and wished to do this song.

What if I disqualify myself for "the best hat in the world" and let Krabbers have it, since it was his song
originally and he does the best job of it... so his "hat" song can go into the hat and I run with "bonnie dundee"
Then everybody wins... unless of course someone is in the throes of torturing their throats with the Scottish
guttural dialect and has turned a vehement Jacobite.

I am having a bit of fun teasing people about the entries in the hat thing.

I do want people to try and find their own entry but when it comes to the crunch anyone who brings something to the season will get the same chance of getting a new hat.

I stay with my ONE hat song request though as they aren't that numerous.

Are you saying that wee_ginga does not in fact have twice as many chances as Krabbers? And that there is no actual advantage to being first with a song? Because I was kind of digging the "need for speed" aspect ... (and the friendly competition it's inspiring) ... it's getting me to get my act together much earlier in the week than usual. I'm not sure we should do it every week, but as something a little different it's kind of fun.

Some other songs for you people who might be stuck. Yankee Doodle, Staw Hat by the Barenaked Ladies, The Hymn, We Are All Enlisted, I Got a Hat by Seasonal Songs in Motion, Ball Cap by Glen Templeton. Bonus's that I can think of off the top of my head, These Boots are Made For Walking and Catch a Falling Star by Perry Como. I hope this is okay, I am just trying to help someone. Linda and I would do one of the bonus's together that I mentioned but it looks like we might have a hard time getting together this week:)

Well ... yes.....I had kind of changed my thinking on this..... the satisfaction of entering a unique song that no one else has done should really be just that ...... and not having twice the chance at winning a hat... I think the seasonistas have entered the spirit of finding their own song.
And re doing an original song especially for the season should not really be penalised .. and I'm pretty sure both Mike and Lynda were actually working on their songs while the other was being posted.

They HADN"T seen the other song and thought I'll do that one.

Gee I hope that makes sense...

I guess that some people want to know how I made this video. I did it through Photo Booth on my Macbook. I used Bug Out in effects. I then put it in IMovie for the title and transitions.

I really don't know what I am doing. I couldn't find a record button in IMovie so I went online and was told that recording in Photo Booth is the easiest way to record. They still couldn't tell me where the record button was in IMovie:/ So when I tried Photo Booth and the effects made me laugh, I decided to record it that way. Apparently there isn't a record button in IMovie. Don't they know some of us old ladies NEED a record button:)

I'm thankful that crown qualifies as a hat in the fine print.

Last year I got to see Jefferson Starship with founder Paul Kantner.
He still looks and sounds like he did 47 years ago, just needed a hand getting on the stage.

He's always been into sci-fi, this post-apocalyptic song was inspired by Canadian John Wyndham's novel The Chrysalids. Wiki says much of the lyric was lifted verbatim.

At the time, I had no idea, I heard it as a generational anthem, but 14-year-olds are chrysalises.

It has one of my favorite lines:

Soon you'll achieve the stability you strive for
In the only way that it's granted
In your place among the fossils of our time...

Wow. Just listening to that version and your voice is very similar to Warren's.
Good job. Thanks for introducing me to the alternate version.

Marty Stuart had a cd called Country Music a few years back and although I was always aware of him as a mandolin player who had started playing with Flatt and Scruggs at the age of fourteen, I had never paid much attention to him until I came across this album. It was one of those albums I rarely seem to find these days in which I like every song. This song was hidden on that album.

Bonus song first. (Life is short ... eat dessert first.) Still working on my hat song. Please don't beat me to it.

I wasn't planning to do a bonus song ... but then I saw Alan use the word "outfit" and I immediately knew what I had to do.

LOVE this wonderful song, by another favorite local songwriter and harmony trio ... Judith Zweiman of the Folk Goddesses (http://thefolkgoddesses.com) of Long Island, New York. Be sure to check them out - they are three of my favorite women, and fabulous singers and songwriters all.

When the going gets tough ... the tough ... go ... SHOPPING!

I tried to wear an appropriate outfit, but the lighting's a bit dark, alas.

Certainly very close - it was real good right up to the end there. Beaut song.

You know when you see those old married couples walking around the mall holding hands - he's only doing it so she can't wander off and buy stuff.

Ah, the male perspective on the situation. :) Good to hear both sides of the story. I always imagined the narrator of this song to be a high-school girl, though the songwriter and singers (and this singer) are, ya know ... older than that.

That ending is HARD. In the trio, each of those three overlapping phrases ("and wish you were mine", "I'm gonna buy a new outfit", "You're gonna see a new me") are sung by different people. Not to mention the tricky/fast/syncopated chord pattern, which took me many tries to learn to play while singing one line at a time, never mind three. At some point in rehearsal, I had it ... and then lost it again.

I'm happy I almost got through it! And I had a class starting, so that needed to be my last take. :)

It is a real catchy song, isn't it? The Folk Goddesses have many great songs ... here's another of my favorites (http://youtu.be/MGtvZ7CcqUs) ... they are worth a listen. (Way better than me. :))

[Can I also just say how refreshing it is to hear you use the word "beaut" on just about every person's video? I have about 2 decades of not hearing that to make up for, so I appreciate you topping up the tank. We Yanks don't use that word. I miss it. Byoody, mate!]

Okay, I give up. I really can play this better, but doing it in time to the chord track added an extra dimension that (so far) has gotten the better of me. This was my first ever melody-picking-while-singing attempt, and it's not an easy song. So, you know ... still a work in progress, really. (So, what's new?) After way too much practice and way, way, way too many takes.

Anyway, this is a song all about hats and dancing on hats, to a hat-dancing tune. Many different hats are mentioned.

http://youtu.be/GLYuUfqNSuQ

No actual hats were harmed in the making of this video. Unfortunately, I can't promise the same for ears.
It's appropriate that all you can see of me during the entire song is the top of my hat. Which is an Australian Akubra, a nod (pun intentional) to our gracious host.

Lyrics:

Oh, Americans dance on a dance floor.
And the Spaniards, they dance on a table.
And the Russians, they dance on a saber.
But the Mexicans dance on their hats.

Oh they dance on hot coals in Calcutta.
In Wisconsin they dance on fresh butta,
Which they squeeze from one cow or an udda.
Yes, the Mexicans dance on their hats. (Ole!)

There are Mexicans dancing on derbies.
There are Mexicans dancing on caps.
They just throw their fedoras
Wherever the floor is,
And start doing horas and taps.

They won't quit! They go on!
It's a Mexicn custom,
To take hats and bust 'em,
By doing a dance thereupon.

Oh the reason they shot Pancho Villa
Was he danced on his mother's mantilla.
And the message did not reach Garcia.
He was out somewhere dancing on hats. (Ole!)

There's a fellow in West Acapulco,
The most elegant man you could meet.
He does sambas on hombergs
To tunes of Sig Romberg's,
And sometimes the Nutcracker Suite.

So take care! So beware!
Or they'll put castanets on
And ruin your Stetson,
'Cause they all think they're Fred Astaire!

If you're ever in Mexico proper,
And you're wearing a straw hat or topper,
When the band starts to play, call a copper,
'Cause by now you should know
That they'll grab your chapeau,
And they'll stomp till it's flat,
And that's that!
That's what Mexicans do on your hat. (Ole!)

If you're still looking for a hat song, here are some I've found throughout the week. There's a lot of really great stuff out there. In spite of our host's warning, I think there's actually a plethora of great hat songs ... you just have to look a little bit. I made many happy discoveries just by searching for various types of hats (usually plus the word "song") on YouTube. In fact, I've made many happy discoveries in lots of Seasons by searching YouTube ("You Won't Ever Be Lonely" and "Goin' Down the Lincoln Highway" are two I used for past Seasons). It's a fun and enlightening little game - try it some time!

Here's my notes from my meanderings ... take what you like:

This is a rap, so needs a tune: "Anything's a Hat (If You Make it a Hat)" - Pleated Jeans
Might be a theme video for our Season.

http://youtu.be/gsejp1b1rw0

Songs I know and (most of them) love:
"Cap in Hand" - the Proclaimers http://youtu.be/A-HKMDOFKW4
Love The Bobs, love this happy hat song: "Helmet" http://youtu.be/8E_w6L1hStc
Of course someone must do this: "Top Hat, White Tie, and Tails" - Fred Astaire http://youtu.be/wc77Vlb-yAE
"Safety Dance" - Men Without Hats http://youtu.be/AjPau5QYtYs (hat-name-band, and the song mentions a hat)
"12 Days of Christmas" - the McKenzie Brothers http://youtu.be/1DTwLqR071M (the hats come at 2:10)
"Chanukah Song" - Adam Sandler http://youtu.be/p3LOhH4P8po ("yarmulke")
"The Queen and the Soldier" - Suzanne Vega http://youtu.be/-I_7M_JeSoc ("crown")
"Ballad of the Green Berets" http://youtu.be/m5WJJVSE_BE http://youtu.be/A7-pnAPcSN4
"Davy Crockett" http://youtu.be/txcRQedoEyY a famous hat man

Here's some stuff I found by searching YouTube, some of it really good:
(Listed in some very rough-ish kind of quality order - YMMV)
"Dunce Cap" - Lost Dogs http://youtu.be/mGJDNm58Dks (Beautiful song - this is a great find for someone!)
"The Hat Song" - The Suitables http://youtu.be/bzLzcxVugGQ
"Mad Hatter Blues" - the Refusers http://youtu.be/IHx9FN54I9g
"Hovering Sombrero" - They Might Be Giants http://youtu.be/waRnqxWNJ2Q
"The Mad Hatter" - Alice in Wonderland musical http://youtu.be/kT9lzGdZjr0
"Fool's Cap" - Gary Lucas http://youtu.be/2TQlbkceZHU (hot instrumental)
"Nilla Wafer Top Hat Time" - Rhett and Link http://youtu.be/jpfp0vV8VEc
"The Sorting Hat" - RiddleTM http://youtu.be/aZgwLANxXIA
"Kiss me Under My Sombrero" - Philippe (salsaman247 ... on uke) http://youtu.be/uYurRYkZGak
"Pulling Rabbits Out of a Hat" - Sparks http://youtu.be/3yAGWHiOj18
"Sombrero Song" - Kevin Johansen http://youtu.be/B3ZmeXSf9R4
"Straw Hat Song" - Desi Arnaz http://youtu.be/eoqznqgakRY
"Sombrero" - Speedy Gonzalez Latin Band http://youtu.be/1UkwIA9bJJE
"Sombrero Song" - Lapin Alexandr http://youtu.be/Kg2gvKf3foM (in Russian, but great music and playing!)
"Put on Your White Sombrero" - ABBA http://youtu.be/wU6-vblQ_u0
"The Hat I Got for Christmas is too Beeg" - Mel Blanc http://youtu.be/_5PDlmEnF9I
"Beany and Cecil" theme song youtu.be/cMdReHP9cb0 (I don't know ... I thought it was "Beanie", like the hat ... maybe it doesn't count?
Okay, then how about this: "The Beanie Baby Song" http://youtu.be/Djqtdfe3svk
"This Ole Akubra Hat" (country song) http://youtu.be/Mi_KQEI8lGQ
"In Your Old Tam O'Shanter" - Florrie Forde (Australian, 1910) http://youtu.be/SbO8TqwK5_E
"Crazy Funky Hat" - Wizards of Waverly Place http://youtu.be/Ta-AQb4XQ0M
"Pointy Hat (The Boat Song)" - Weebee Boys http://youtu.be/L646O2bQyHY

LOTS of great stuff if you just type "hat song" into YouTube
Also "sombrero song" ... or any hat you choose, probably. But LOTS of sombrero songs. No idea why.

Oh, and surely "YMCA" counts as a hat song? :-)

Other Attire:
"Best Black Dress" - the Nields
"Tuxedo Junction"
Mike Agranoff (www.MikeAgranoff.com (http://www.MikeAgranoff.com)) does a wonderful song called "I've Got No Trousers On" (okay, it's not actually called that, but it should be). Alas there is no recording of it online. Feel free to ask him. Tell him I sent you. :)
"Underwear" - the Minions (okay, it's in Minion-speak, so good luck)
"Hot Pants", "Short Shorts", "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini"
Okay, you don't really need my help with this, do you?

Thank you, Brian! I think "Real Beaut Mess" just about sums up my entire uke experience to date ... if not pretty much everything about me. :) I think I shall make a name plate for my door emblazoned with that. :)

And yeah, pretty much everything I try at this point is "new stuff" ... it's all good ... and fun. Hopefully my 30-week trail of videos is at least evidence of some movement over time in a forward direction.

Real Beaut Season, mate! Fun stuff. Hats. Great idea.

I actually made three videos this week so far ... because I made my Season 103 video on Sunday ... and you gave me the idea to wear a silly hat in that one ... so here it is if you want to see another hat you inspired. It was just the added silliness my shapes song needed. (I even said Season 104 in the video by mistake ... but it was for 103.)

I have finally got there. of course by the time I have found a song, sorted out the chords, learnt it, recorded it, fought with the computer to upload it etc someone else has done the song, but hey ho
I had not even heard this song before this season.
"I wear my own kind of hat"
I did think afterwards I should have changed the words in the last line to "I wear all kinds of hats" but by that time it was too late to redo it. :^(

To be truthful the vid was thrown together very quickly, I just grabbed all my hats out of the cupboard and put them on one at a time and took the selfies and them chucked them into openshot. I did have other ideas for a more complicated version but just don't have the time to devote to making videos, my main interest is the playing not the recording. I was raised on a steady diet of Allan Sherman, so I'm glad to hear this one. I had expected that someone would do first another song that Sherman sang:
"Cat, hat, in French chat, chapeau..."

And if someone doesn't do a certain Steely Dan song, I'll end up having to do it on Misfit Island, though I lack the proper headgear.

I think I was too young to realize that was him behind Cat in the Hat. I did wear my Cat-in-the-Hat hat for my Season 103 video (http://youtu.be/NiYPqcdDzlM) on Sunday (I got all my hats out for Pa, and that one seemed appropriate).

I bought me a new toy! A tenor Gold Tone Banjo Uke. It was a blem so I got it for $250 through Ebay. They said the neck was not cut to specs and that only a true technician would spot it.It was inspected and warrantied by Gold Tone. My question is "what about the intonation"? They are giving me two weeks to return...So here's the question. Should this be a keeper? Im not sure if I ruined the strings. I tuned it up to GCEA and then read that the tuning was DGBE so I think Ive over stretched the strings. Ive never played one of these before and if you even slightly move a string you can hear the bend. I don't know if this is a result of me over stretching the stings or typical for a banjo uke. Give me your opinions if you want.

Ah, me too, Jim! This is actually my second Allan Sherman cover ... he's the first artist I've covered twice. The first was for Ginny's body parts week - Season 89 (http://youtu.be/PwNq6hHIFyA) - can you guess which one?

I watched that one when you posted it that season. That wasn't a song I'd listened to that much as a kid. I would have probably gone with "I See Bones" (I see things in your peritoneum that belong in the British Museum) or "Skin" (Skin is what you feel at home in, and without it furthermore, both your liver and abdomen would keep falling on the floor).

It's been weeks since I've been here! But, with two massive work projects completed, I've managed to return (even though I had to stay up late to do it). That's okay—this is a late-night sort of song anyhow.

Mostly 9th and sus2 chords in this. The ukulele's reentrant tuning allows for these to more often be voiced as tone clusters, which I love.

There's been another Mountain Goats song mentioning a hat in the title, but I think this is the first version of *this* Mountain Goats song that mentions a hat in the title.

I think it sounds very nice. They retail for about $390 or so? I don't see a reason to turn that one down at a substantial discount like that unless you see issues with the neck.

Later today, I hope to post a new song I have written this week especially for this theme.

Meanwhile, I reckon all of us here who write songs, or who plan to at some point, should check out this fantastic FREE online songwriting course from Berklee College. See this new thread I've opened (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?92996-Writing-songs-This-FREE-online-course-from-Berklee-College-is-a-must!!) in the songwriting section of the forum.

I've been on the course for two and a half weeks, but it was only in a remark I made to Wim that it suddenly occurred to me that I should have shared news of its existence with all of you guys. :o

Hope this proves useful to y'all.

Well, here it is: "The Drop of a Hat" for your delectation! It ain't a blues, but the "blue" tinge certainly adds to the narrator's blues in the song. :)

BTW - the lyrics are based on a terrible relationship I had in the 1970s. One of those times - that are all too frequent in our youth - where you mistake obsession for love ;).

I think it sounds fantastic! There was a guy on here somewhere recently talking about tension being too much on banjo uke tenors. He appeared to be a builder and selling banjo ukes in one of the forums, but I can't remember which exactly. I don't know myself. I just saw that recently is all.

Thanks for the kind words.

Everything I know about ukulele I learned from watching others and this is no different.

The strumming pattern is something Aaron Keim suggested in a workshop which is perfect for Johnny Cash stuff. The "up-the-neck stuff" I put together from things I learned from watching eugeneukulele's vids.

The chorus chords are C, Am, F, C, C, G7, C (found on internet).

The bridge ("up-the-neck stuff") is just different forms of those same chords some of which I had to look up on ezFolk.com (http://www.ezfolk.com/uke/chords/).
C7 (3433), Am (5450), F (5558), C (0787), G (77710), C(0003), plus a little C-G7-C shuffle at the end.

The little variations of each chord are just trial and error or copying ones that Eugene used in other songs. I learned from watching Eugene's videos that choosing chord formations that walk up the neck like that builds tension, climaxes, and then drops back down to the initial position in a satisfying way.

I have been waiting a few weeks now for a new ukulele to arrive, and today it turned up.
For those interested it is a tenor sized Koa Pili Koko ukulele.
This is some info from Ukulelehunt review:
"Koa ukuleles are my favorite ukuleles. I love the look and sound of them. Unfortunately, I'm not so keen on the price tag. Koa Pili Koko ukuleles are made from Acacia wood (a close relative of koa) and look and sound almost identical to koa. However, the wood is much more abundant, and therefore cheaper, than koa wood."
One day I hope my playing will complement this nice instrument.

In the meantime here is a bonus song for season 104.
Because it was about fashion I expected, that more clothing items would be mentioned, however only the "frilly nylon panties" were directly referenced. That should be good enough

As you all know this number will ever be associated with Fred Astaire and the epic routine with which he performs it in the 1946 movie 'Blue Skies'. However the song itself first appeared on screen in 1929, and again in 1930, in the eponymous movie "Puttin' On The Ritz", and again in 1939, in the movie "Idiot's Delight" in which it is performed by Clark Gable, in the only song and dance routine he ever did on screen.

Clark Gable - Putting On The Ritz (http://youtu.be/s1A-oiSJaRc)

The lyrics were considerably revised for "Blue Skies" - why this happened seems fairly clear; but no-one seems to know who either suggested or made the revisions and on whose instigation they were made. I've used the original lyrics here - they make a lot more sense.

http://youtu.be/hWPY9Ro44Mg

Are the lyrics overtly racist? A lot revolves round the expression "high-brown" - over on wikipedia talk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Puttin%27_On_the_Ritz#Original_lyrics), there's been quite a discussion about this, but the arguments are inconclusive. Some have argued it is a term of racist abuse, but the only examples quoted there are of black people using it about other black people. I first came across it in a Jamaican context many years ago, where there was no racist connotation.

Are they patronisingly racist? Again, it depends. Who's supposed to be singing the song? If it's a white man pointing at the funny habits of black folk, then yes. But I think, as does Clare Spark (http://clarespark.com/) of the Yankee Doodle Society that they're more nuanced (http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/logbrowse.pl?trx=vx&list=H-US1918-45&month=1008&week=a&msg=L6C5b9i21yjzxBaNuUfapg) than that. Are they any more racist than the current Guinness advert (http://youtu.be/B-3sVWOxuXc)? It's worth noting that MGM chose to use that Clark Gable routine in "That's Entertainment" (1974).

Context, as always, is key.

Anyway - a musical curio. Make of it what you will.

Here's my HAT entry...

Since three of the four songs I thought I might do were already taken and done by others that beat me to it, and done quite well I might add...I decided to try this song, and get my entry in before this song was also taken.

For this song I am recording for the first time with my Harmony Baritone, which was given to me by my paternal Grandfather before he passed away at 93 yrs old back in 2009. Music was a huge part of his life (and he was a big influence for me growing up), and this instrument is the main reason I first started looking into, and then taking up the ukulele. I am never looking back.

Here's my entry for the 'wardrobe' section of Season 104.

I'm surprised nobody did this one yet.

This a simple rendering of "These Boots Are Made For Walking" made popular initially by Nancy Sinatra.
Words and Music by Lee Hazelwood
(page 232 of Jim Beloff's 'The Daily Ukulele' book)

From baritone in my other video about HATS to soprano about BOOTS - are there extra points for working in the opposites from each end? (reminds me of Shepard Tones (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepard_tone))

This is played on a Mahalo U-30 Soprano that I got from Musicians Friend for $26 a few months ago. I have re-cut the nut slots (as per the fine videos online by OldePhart) but used a hacksaw blade, and put a new handmade bone saddle, and it is strung with Worth Browns 'LIGHT' high-g strings. It plays really nice now, and intonation is great up to the 7th fret, after, not so much, but now it is much better than before where it was 20-cents sharp even at the 3rd fret on all strings.

Here's my bonus track, featuring the Amazing Electric Dolphin(tm). I promise you the pants I'm wearing are very fancy, although the rest of me is not.

Here's "Feather In Your Cap" by Beck. Forgive the mistake on the season number -- I got ahead of myself!

What a beautiful song and totally new to me. Lovely singing makes this a real good job. Thank you for sharing this with us here on the seasons. I REALLY like this one!

Here's what I hope I have done.

For official hat entries I have put a comment here in the thread and on your YouTube clip and your clip should appear in the Hat Rack playlist on post number 1.

For bonus songs I have put a comment on your YouTube channel and your clip should appear in The Wardrobe playlist on post number 1.

So if by some careless oversight I've missed you out please let me know.

And a big THANK YOU to all those who found a song to do for this season.
I know many of you would not have had a hat song "handy" and did have to go looking for one.
But that's what these seasons are about, right?

I do hope for quite a few more as there are a couple of days to go.

I had a bunch of songs I wanted to do this week but very little time. Threw this together to try and win the hat (BTW, if I win I will dress as Pabrizzer for Halloween). Unfortunately this song only has a passing mention of a hat, a paper hat.
Here's another Todd Snider tune. I've done three in the past month!

Okay, this is weird. My previous post is a whole new video that has it's own name "The Sorting Hat Song", yet the title above say's "Betting on Trains" but plays the right song. ??????????

Found my boo, boo. I swear I renamed the post to YT but apparently did not. It's fixed now. I'm also going to re post my "Betting on Trains" video because there is over 6 mins of black screen there.

This has been a great week, thanks Pa (:

Sorry to interject but some UkeyDave geezer already did this. ;-) I ALWAYS like to see duplicate entries though and like your cool individual take on it and flashy ending.

Hi UkeyDave,

Well, now I've got egg on my face. I feel like such a dope.

Honestly I was so sure that I had not seen this one done by anyone else, and it has always a priority and my intent not to duplicate songs already done by others.

Somehow I did not remember having seen your video. I must be retarded. I am truly so sorry.

UkeyDave, You have done an excellent rendition of this song (#21 in the playlist), and it was never with malicious intent that I made mine, as I never wanted to steal your thunder here...

I had lots of trouble finding a song I could do, and my old mother actually suggested this song (yes, she is very supportive of the seasons and my ukulele interest) and when I found the music in 'Daily Ukulele', I never looked back.

Please accept my apologies as I humbly ask for your forgiveness.

I hope we can still be friends here :)

So I do have a hat song in mind but it's taking me a while to learn it because it has some weird voicings, so in case I don't make it in time, I decided to post this song I've been working on with the shy people in my house that mentions a piece of clothing. It is the anniversary of the seasons and i wanted to make sure to take part in it :o
Awesome entries everyone! Hoping to hear more!

This is a bonus I set out to do but could not find the chords for anywhere on the internet. That made me buy the book U2 - the Complete Song which has chords for all songs from Boy to Pop. I then based this version on the chords in the book. I reserve the right to do this: If you wear that velvet dress a little better for a later season ;). I overlayed my video with the video part from this version of the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=192XoDwDDz4.

If you did a meet up would you wear a bag over your head?

I could just see it now. We walk into a dark coffee house...its nearly sundown. We see a beam of sunlight streaming through the window on you red pumps and can hear your sexy voice. We make our way through the crowded smoke filled room and approach slowly...and then...

Got back home from grandchild care duties last night. Foul journey - rained most of the way home. Delights of the South Circular* on a wet Friday afternoon are not to be recommended! :wallbash:

Managed to get a song done today.

I didn't want to try copying BEV so I tried hiding behind the mic instead - not very effective.

Anyway here is a traditional song about hats - and coats, shirts, waistcoats, boots and socks as well but the title mentions hats so there mehhh. (not quit sure how to spell that little peevish noise)

http://youtu.be/9Y9-EmVLCD8

* For non-UK friends, the South Circular together with the North Circular formed London's original outer ring road. They were notorious from the day they were completed. Even further out is the M25, whose official title is London Orbital Motorway but is colloquially known as the "London Orbital Car Park".

Bonus ........

I've always loved the lyrics of this one,it tells of the reality of the other side of a capitals glitz and those forgotten or ignored surviving on its streets. (Its a special toon for me with extra special meaning)

You sure do (Wear Your Own Kind of Hat) Dave and I love your style.
It wouldn't have been a proper hat party without seeing your beanie!
Thank you.

I think this song could be the theme song for this season.

I hope all the seasonistas in Great Britain have faired well with the lousy weather I've been seeing in the news.

Your attire has been a lot less formal and a lot less in your tropical videos Jon.
But I did notice that the (Tassie?) beanie was still worn.
I will add your song to the playlist when it arrives.
Safe travels.

Hi guys,
We're in the middle of an attic conversion, the house is covered in dust and every evening we had to spend cleaning, working, buying flooring, etcetera. Finally we managed to get a song in. It's Here Comes Your Man by the Pixies. A song we loved since high school. Somewhere there's mention of a crown, so I guess it's a hat song!

Looking Out The Window With The Blue Hat On - This is off of one of my all-time favorite albums - A Man Called E. One of those great albums that few people know of. This is my daughter and I doing the video, She had a lot of fun as long as she was able to write in her book. This is also me making my "I Want My MTV" style video since I didn't make one for my own week. Figured I should put my money where my mouth is.
