If you want to post blues songs, here is the place to do it.

Just to get things started, here's an original I did for another UU contest.

Now, those who are wanting to post more blues let's hear from you.

I don't sing the blues very often but I'd sure like to spend some time learning a few classic blues songs on the uke. And I'd like to figure out how to play a blues turn around. Thanks to CeeJay and Tootler for inspiring and starting a Blues Thread for the Seasons.
Well - the 11th Season was a long time ago. So here's a blues song recorded way back when.

Great stuff, everyone. I will try to get a listen sometime but I'm travelling down south tomorrow to visit my father so a 6 - 7 hour drive.

Meanwhile here's another orignal, this time from Season 102

http://youtu.be/KQXs8yKuTe0

I have plans to re-record another I did for season 102 but which I did in rather a hurry on Sunday evening so the result was more than a little rough.

This is great! I like this one a lot. The way you tell the story, is very nice.

I LOVE learning blues songs on the uke--I'm especially fond of this one that I did back in season 88, originally recorded by Tim Curry (!) and more recently covered quite successfully by Joe Bonamassa (both versions are worth seeking out). If you know the Tim Curry original, I should warn you that I've toned down the profanity somewhat.

Blues In A minor...jamming some fingerpicked uke over a backing track ....

Backing track is available at http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/ and they are quite happy for you to use them and long as if you post anything you give them a credit ...like this...:)

This is arguably not playing the Ukelele ...

Well, it's been a while since I had the time to make a new video, so here's an old one from Season 77. A lot of folks seem to be doing the Dave Van Ronk version of this song (as "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me") since it was in that new movie, but this is they way I learned it from listening to Jerry Garcia. I like both versions of the song.

Here is another Backing track resource ....woot that 's two now :

http://www.karaoke-version.com/karaoke/

as well as:

http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/ (:http//www.guitarbackingtrack.com/)

But be aware that Karaoke version requires that you buy the track although it does allow you to edit , change key and a little light remixing.

Guitar Backing Tracks are free but you get what you are given........

Oh and a quick disclaimer ...I have no interest in either of the above or any of the upcoming sites , financial or otherwise except as a consumer myself.

Nice! I like the idea about it only having new videos. Just a thought, in order to encourage a wider readership you might want to have this thread be somewhere other than just the Season's Forum.

I completely forgot that I posted an original blues song way back in season 47! This is about being a professor, and the first-world problems I get the blues over... (and note that this was my first seasons post ever--thus predating my figuring out how to reverse the picture so it isn't a mirror image...)

Rex, this thread appears to be mostly songs that Seasonistas have done in the past though you could post a new one. CeeJay has started a blues thread specifically for just new videos and the sharing of blues material.

As the one who started this thread, I did not intend it should be for old videos but also for new songs as well. I would love to see new videos in this thread. Anyway, there is inevitably a finite supply of videos from former seasons, so new videos are necessary.

As it happens, Ceejay and I have been discussing the possible merging of the two threads as it doesn't really make sense to have two blues threads in this sub forum.

Folks, I've just merged these Blues themed threads. As you guys said, makes no sense to have two additional threads for this genre. Everyone can post their old and new material here and also use it to share resources. I have left an expiring redirect on the old "Blues Isle" thread for a few days.

Back in Season 102 which was hosted by Frisbee Fred I was the lucky winner of the grand prize and in my conversations with Fred I told him if he was ever in Atlanta that we should get together. Yesterday business brought him (and my genuine Vermont maple syrup) here and we got to spend the afternoon together playing and singing. I had a most wonderful time and we thought it would be nice to share it on here with you.

Everybody knows Robert Johnson and the fact that he only recorded 19 songs

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Robert_Johnson)

Well Washington Phillips (January 11, 1880 -- September 20, 1954) was a Texan gospel singer and
musician and he only recorded eighteen songs, all between 1927 and 1929, though only sixteen survived.

Some of his songs amount to highly specific and detailed gospel sermons, featuring Phillips'
voice self-accompanied by an instrument that sounds like a fretless zither.

This instrument, which has been variously identified as a Dolceola, a Celestophone, and a
Phonoharp (and also is considered by some to be an instrument entirely home-made by Phillips)
creates a unique sound on these recordings that makes them immediately recognizable.

Denomination Blues by Washington Phillips
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLx1uf... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLx1uf2QzSg)

He has been cover by people like Ry Cooder.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooo :(

i like the fact the the uke isn't considered cool

i mean I think it's cool

and all the supercool uke-ers of the world think it's cool

but most people who aren't into uke-ing, think uke-ing is a bit twee and uncool

oh gosh how long we gotta wait until sam is of an age when you give up worrying about the cool or not cool thing?

about 40 years?

Bev, Bev, Bev......It's an excellent song. It's even an excellent blues song if you slow it down.

Lynda, you can slow it down but you need to discipline yourself to do it. (Sorry did I swear there? :uhoh:)

Here's a practical suggestion.

Go on line and search for a metronome. There are plenty free ones out there - If you prefer find a tablet/iPad app - also plenty free.

Set it at a suitable slow tempo - between 80 and 88 (NO QUICKER) is OK for a slow blues. I did St. James Infirmary at 84 bpm

Then practice a basic blues progression using the metronome.

C7 / / / C7 / / / C7 / / / C7 / / /
F7 / / / F7 / / / C7 / / / C7 / / /
G7 / / / G7 / / / F7 / / / C7 / / /

One downstroke at each tick of the metronome. The first beat of the bar is usually indicated by a stronger tick. Keep doing it until you are comfortable with the tempo and can do to the metronome.

Then try without the metronome. Tap your foot to help set the tempo. Check your tempo using the metronome and keep practising until you get it.

Keep doing it till you are comfortable with the slow tempo, then try one of your songs at the slow tempo. You'll be surprised how effective it is, once you get the feel for it.

It's actually harder to play slowly well than quickly but it's worth the effort. Listen to what Fred did with one of your songs by slowing it down.

ah tootler, i do actually have a metronome, yes a proper tick tock thingy, not just my speed it up and rock it out korg gizmo

tootler : this proper metronome.................. do you ever use it?

me : ummmmmmmmmmmmmm................. :uhoh:

seriously geoff thank you for those instructions I AM GONNA DO IT i think out of respect for the blues and for the sake of all over character building and self discipline (*washes mouth out with soap*) i should do this

tootler : this proper metronome.................. do you ever use it?

I also have a proper tick tocky thing which I never use now. The arm has an annoying habit of swinging in an ever wider arc until it klunks against the body of the metronome.

I do also have a Korg electronic one that has a tap in function which is very useful for getting a tempo from somewhere else. I also have one built into my multi track recorder which I do use sometimes when recording to keep an even tempo. I did it with St James Infirmary. I used the tap function of the Korg to get the tempo I wanted, set that in my recorder then recorded the intro using it. I could then use that to give me the tempo for the uke and voice.

Not quite metronome but same thing. Some years ago, I used midi to record a selection of folk tunes with accompaniment which I then used to play back and play along with. The midi is like a metronome but having the tunes, I found, made it easier to play along. It did two things, it helped me in playing with others and also I got into the way of playing at a steady beat which has stood me in good stead as the band I play in does ceilidhs and you need to be able to hold a beat to play for dancing.

Good luck. It's worth learning to play at different tempos it gives access to a wider range of songs.

yes yes yes, i think i have the same thing as you, the korg electronic metronome, i LOVE the tap in function, sometimes i use that to give me a good tempo match to whatever song i want to copy the pace of, and then set the korg mini drum gizmo to keep pace with it - you cannot set that one to a particular beats per minute, that is the only minus to that little thing

How about setting your metronome to (say) 84bpm then setting your Korg mini drum to match it and play along to that rather than just the metronome. Makes it a bit more interesting.

yes i think it helps me to have the korg and some "proper" (well kinda!) drums etc going rather than just the old tick tock thing

i'm alternating between having the beat going, and playing with that, and then playing freely without it, and seeing if i can stay slow. at the moment i'm setting the beat to 80 BPM, and playing along with that, and then playing freely and hitting about 130 BPM! that sounds bad but i checked the audio to my most recent wannabe blues vid and it's 174 BPM!!!!!!!! so it's like i'm splitting the difference and it's a significant slow down FOR ME, even playing freely, which i think is rather thrilling! i may bring a vid over with where i am with this now, i'm so excited to have slowed down a bit even if i'm not at my target yet - it all feels a whole lot more achievable now! thanks so much geoff!

Fred's blues week inspired me to tackle this Little Miss Higgins song from here Bison Ranch sessions album. I did another cover from it last year. Here's "Your House Tonight." Check out the original which has some tasty harmony lines between different instruments on the solo and of course some great drums and a banjo worked in there. I don't believe she has played this on baritone uke but she does play one very well on some other songs.

I put a Low G string on...I don't know if it is the right guage or what ... just pulled a 26 gauge roundwound out of my string store Ickier box ........sorry that would be Ikea drawer box ...probably Stanmpromt or something similar .......and slapped it on ....then tuned the damned thing to ADF#B ...so this is using the A D E shape chords which makes it B E F#.....feedback would be welcome ...is it too high for a Tenor ?...sounds okay to me ...but I am a soprano myself ....no not me ...my preference....Soprano Ukes .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w5DqYPdyCI

Terry Robb recorded this based on traditional Vestapol figures in Open D tuning and used a mixture of traditional blues lyrics.

He used slide. I can't approach that level of playing yet. Still I love playing blues in open tuning like this.
