"E Hihiwai" (Dennis Kamakahi)

John, you did it and it sounds great. (Like the video too) I'm not familiar with the song but it's one want to hear again. All the songs of Dennis Kamakahi are appealing and make you want to sing along with them. Thanks for sharing and doing this video. I printed out the lyrics once you said you were working on it.

Thanks, friends! Shirley, I agree about Dennis Kamakahi! His songs really capture the spirit of Hawaii from days long ago. His "Wahine Ilikea" is one of my top two fave Hawaiian songs! :)

Pretty song and nice harmonies. What is the song about? It's the "simple" songs like this that I appreciate the most. I've visited Hawaii a couple of times and my two best friends are from the big Island. I've raced outrigger canoe now for over 15 yrs. I can really appreciate a song like this today as we're expecting possibly another FOOT of SNOW here on the east coast! Makes me feel all warm inside : )

Thanks, Drew! Here's a translation for the song:

There in the beauty of Molokaʻi
In the fearful cliffs of the windward side
The sweet voice calls
In the evening hours
In the cold wind of the valley

Chorus:
O hīhīwai tra la la
Come back to me
To the lush and beautiful land of Wailau
So glorious
Is the waterfall Kahiwa
And the mountain, ʻOlokuʻi

Let us all sing together
The song of the land
Of the never fading beauty of life eternal
The wind is my voice
The sea is my heart
The lush and beautiful land is my whole body
