Way to 'represent' Aldrine!
My first uke was a cheap, orange-colored, solid wood (like balsa) from Japan
that my grandmother bought for me from Longs Drugs for about $7. That was
in 1960. Wooden pegs. Loved it! Not sure where it went after I left for college
(Chicago - Bible School, actually, Moody, to be precise).
I had picked up a Kamaka (over a Martin) to bring to College. I could kick myself
for not spending the extra.... (ready for this?) $7 bucks. That's right! the Kamaka was
$28 and the Martin was $35. Yes, I know, I should have bought BOTH and a few more!!!
That was 1966... the good old days we fondly try to remember.
Anyway, that little Kamaka survived 3 years in Chicago and Summers in upper New York (Schroon Lake).
I did get a Martin Tenor during my senior year... $145 with plywood hard case. I ended up
trading it to Gordon Mark (who wanted it for one of this students) for a Kamaka Tenor and an
Kamaka Baritone. I may have also gotten a Kamaka soprano out of that deal... can't remember.
Now it's Sopranos and more sopranos. Both the Kamaka Tenor and Baritone are gone
But I do have
a stable of Sopranos that I love to play.
