View Full Version : Go '80's! (video contest)

UKISOCIETY

Deach blessed me with 2 TV Pal plastic ukuleles after I broke mine while playing Violent Femmes. Which means I have an extra. Which means that it's time for a contest!!!

What you have to do: Interpret a song from the 1980's.

Rules:

If you have an ukulele, you must use it. BUT, if you don't have an ukulele yet, you can still participate! Sing a capella. Do a poetry reading of your favorite 80's song. Or act it out. If you use other instruments, they must accompany an ukulele. (Does that make sense?) You can enter as many times as you'd like!

Post the video(s) on YouTube and then post a link to the video in this thread. You will be judged by how clever (EDIT: To clarify, by "clever" I mean how original your take on the song is) your video is, as judged by me.

Deadline: Saturday, February 28, 12 midnight Eastern. Winner will be announced the first week in March.

80's... AWESOME!

question, if its a song like, say, Just a Gigaloo (David Lee Roth), but was a cover from a previous era (I think that was composed by Mozart originally) is it still considered an 80's song?

I'll have to see if George Thorogood was active in the 80s...

If not, I'll find something else.

I'm sure he performed "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" at least once in the '80s, right? How about I give that a shot?

It might be interesting playing this sober.

You know, on second thought, this song would be an immensely bad idea. Back to the drawing board with me.

Just to clarify, songs written before the '80's are okay - only if they were covered by a group in the 1980's. "Boy from NYC" was covered by Manhattan Tranfer in the 80's, for example. Boy, somebody could do THAT one! :D

You will be judged by how clever your video is, as judged by me.

What does this mean, Alan? I understand "clever" to mean intelligent. Are you looking for an original take on an '80's song or an interesting video?

Thanks Alan

One of my favorite '80s bands, along with U2 and the Clash (Joe Strummer started out busking with a uke, BTW). Saw the Pretenders and the Clash live in the early '80s, never saw U2.

It's a song by U2 taken from their 1987 album "The Joshua Tree".

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQp1r6aLAh0)

Bono sings it over an octave higher than me. I couldn't manage it so I did it my way. And yes, it is my hat and I wear it often.

Please rate, comment and (hopefully) enjoy.

You don't have to sing the song. Maybe do a recitation...?

Plus, there are many 80's hits that require little or no singing. Such as:

Rockit -- Herbie Hancock
19 -- Paul Hardcastle
Rock Me Amadeus -- Falco
Da Da Da -- Trio
AEIOU (Sometimes Y) -- Ebn Ozn
Axel F -- Harold Faltermeyer
Chariots of Fire -- Vangelis
It's Like That -- Run DMC
One Night in Bangkok -- Murray Head

As good as you (and Ken Middleton) are, I wouldn't stand a chance.

That, and my voice doesn't feel right (a tad too low) for the songs I want to try. Struggling with my pitch wouldn't make it fun for me. And if I can't have fun, I really shouldn't enter it. Forcing myself to perform would be a bad idea.

Ahh, but theres a solution... Esp, its an easy one... First step-- Find a 80's song on Chordie.com (its back up now)
Step 2: Have it transpose the song down a few notches, so you can sing it... I have the exact opposite problem from ya-- I tend to need to bump things up a little, thanks to my squeaky little voice.

You can do it!

People have themes for things from all kinds of eras, sometimes even ones well after which many of the participants were born. If it didn't specify in the rules that you had to have lived through the decade, then I don't see why not enter.

If people prefer their '80s vids with a drop of nostalgia, so be it, but surely there's no harm in us young'uns having a go at the contest anyway.

Thanks for suggesting that. I'm back on track!

I posted this over in the "videos" section, but I guess I better mention it here, eh?

I'm finally relenting and entering a contest. I've been putting off getting a YouTube account. But then you just had to do an 80's contest, didn't you Alan? My weak spot. Well, that and disco. :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezcPJQ-rXuk

So yeah, I guess the interpretations of each of the songs aren't really that "clever". But I figured I'd get a couple of cleverness points for putting them together. I think the lyrics of the two songs actually turn out to work well with each other.

I'd say you get a fair amount of cleverness points for setting the songs to your Phil Collins-esque voice.

Seriously, you sound a lot like him.

Not only that, your entry is the first medley.

Okay, I'm in. And I'm in it to win. I've been working on this one for two whole days. I want that TV Pal, Alan, and I'll embarrass myself to get it. A six-song medley of stereotypical 80's songs all performed my me and my ukulele. See if you can name all the bands and songs referenced in the vid.

To demonstrate the great lengths that I'll go to win that plastic ukulele, I've:
1) worn makeup (I asked my mom if I could borrow an eyebrow pencil)
2) shaved my mustache (my face feels naked)
3) spent $25 on wardrobe (okay, maybe not as impressive as the first two)

Boy I hope this qualifies as "clever" enough for you.

But seriously, I had a lot of fun making this video. Comment, rate, laugh, cry, and most of all enjoy.

Wow, talk about inspired...I burst out laughing several times (Flock of Seagulls and Boy George hairdos were my favorite)! I find it hard to believe anyone can come up with anything better. Here's the song list:

1. "Centerfold" by J. Geils Band
2. "Safety Dance" by Men without Hats
3. "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls
4. (Have to leave this one as a surprise for obvious reasons)
5. "Sunglasses at Night" by Corey Hart
6. "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club

And of course the reference to Devo!

I made the Devo hat a couple years ago out of styrofoam. It has at least five coats of high gloss red and several clear coats for the shiny, plastic look. I should post instructions on how to make your own.

The costumes were purchased at a local second-hand store, and like I said, came to about $25. What I couldn't find, I made do with my own clothes.

The camera spin was accomplished by attaching a 3 (or so) foot long pole to the handle of the tripod. As I slowly walked around the tripod, my hip (which is just out of view) pressed against the stick and spun the camera around.

I'm so glad everyone has enjoyed it. Sometimes it's fun to be a goofball.

I haven't mentioned this yet - although I guess I should - that there is a secret bonus prize to this contest. The first person who does a complete uke cover of a song by a certain artist/group (that shall remain nameless) from the 1980's will win the extra bonus prize. The secret is - WHO IS THE ARTIST/GROUP? If you are the first to cover this artist/group - you win!

I just haven't figured out what the prize is yet. :D

Just to be clear, the mystery artist/group hasn't been covered yet in this contest. So let's get going!

Ok, so here's the promised Afrika Bambaataa take. I think it's really a work in progress, rather than finished - I didn't have time to do nearly as much uke as I'd have liked, and I think more percussion would've been good too. However, I'm away tomorrow and Thursday, and Friday looks busy, hence the fact that the video is dull, and I had to compromise a bit with the recording. The percussion is all played on a djembe, which I then processed through a phased distortion, with the result that when I hit the bass note, it sounds kinda like an analog synth squelch!

I still have an ambition to do Captain Of Her Heart, but I don't think I'll get it done on time.....

Aloha y'all!

First of all: I'm happy I found this friendly forum - I'm usually at the German ukulelenclub, where Ken's first Cure video was linked to. So I found out about this canny contest - and I could contibute.

So my friend Karin an I started our own youtube channel and eagerly shot some hits. Then the trouble started: Everything was out of sync - no matter whatever format I uploaded. Finally we've managed one low resolution take, which looks about all right:

No one has cover my "mystery artist/group" yet. I asked a coworker and he thought it was an obscure selection. Silly me, I thought everyone would remember ______ ______!

Reminder - the 1st complete cover of a song by the mystery artist/group will win the extra bonus prize. (No, I don't know what that prize is yet!)

Thanks for all the great covers! 46 so far!

Khaaaaaannnn!!!!!! (http://www.khaaan.com/)

This, by the way, is why I didn't directly mention the artist or song title anywhere on the YouTube page for my last submission. That will hopefully fool the yankbots. We'll see.

It wasn't. I felt really REALLY bad that I couldn't give more prizes. I would strongly urge anyone who is considering hosting a contest to think hard about the judging criteria. Had I said simply that I would pick the "Best Performance" I wouldn't have been able to do it. Asking for 'most clever" or "original" gave me a way to separate videos of equal quality.
