I have a ukulele I am building from a kit. I'm looking to do some painting and designs on it with acrylic paints then maybe to a clear coat to finish it. As it will be more artistic painting I want to leave room for error and ability to fix as I go. Do you think I should put a clear coat down first, do my painting, then do another clear coat on top? Or should I paint right on the raw wood? I'm worried on the raw wood could cause problems if I make a mistake that I want to wipe off.

Sand with 220>Gesso>Golden Acrylics (If you want to thin the paint DO NOT USE WATER. I recommend mixing in airbrush medium.)>Varnish (I use gamblin gamvar).

Yes ...get the surface sealed first...then get a nice blank undercoat on first..white preferably so your paints are as bright as they can be when you apply them..
