Maybe a silly question. I'm not talking about the strumming, I strum with my index finger. But when I play D (2220) sometimes my ring finger's nail is pressing the string down and sometimes I start from 1110 then slide to 2220. I'm paranoid that the nail sliding would damage the string.

I just have a mental picture of something sharp sliding on wood and chipping pieces off, thinking the same would happen with my string.

I doubt it. If it worries you, though, I'd suggest you keep the nails on your left hand really short.

the fingernails on your fret hand should be short so its easier to play. I dont think your nails would damage the strings if you just play normally.

Mine do and I keep my nails pretty short. You can feel all kinds of nicks on my strings from it. When it gets bad or seems to start affecting intonation I change em.
