So at the recent uke camp I attended, I hauled around my gear, which included a solid, but heavy and bulky, music stand. I got to poking around on the net and came across a replacement that looked like the bee's knees ...

It's called a Desca Presto. It folds up into an oblong box and I feel the need to get one and try it out. There's a slide show and video on their site, (http://www.descahome.com) and I have included an image here.

I will let you know how well it works once I get it ...

Wow - that looks really promising. Looking forward to your review.

In the event that that one doesn't work out, check out the Hercules BS100B - I reviewed it here, exactly one year ago, and it's the only music stand I've ever owned that didn't fall apart after 3 months. It's a bit bulkier than most of those folding ones, but not as heavy and bulky as the non-folding Manhasset stand that I use at home.

That Desca Presto stand looks interesting.

I've been using a Peak music stand that folds into a soft carrying case.

Here's the link to its amazon.com listing: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=peak%20music%20stands

And here's a link to a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyiQYtBdbEk

yeah, those things are awesome! very sturdy...not a small case though, but I have one and wouldn't think of anything else, unless backpacking or something. It will hold 3-4 big books!

I can't BELIEVE this thread is here! This is so cool - we have just had our all state honor band here in Alabama and my students who made all state came back talking about these very cool music stands and we looked it up to figure out what the name was. It was the Peak stands. I really need to get something. We have some table top stands that we really love, but if you don't have a table...

I have a lightweight Yamaha stand. It's made from aluminium and really is light but still pretty sturdy. It was a bit pricey, though. I believe they have come down in price since I got mine as I've had it for a few years now.

My daughter made a very nice quilted bag for it.

That Desca Presto looks impressive, if possibly a little bulky when packed, but one major failing I think I see is the lack of the little wire arms to hold books open and stop individual sheets from falling off. I've got a "retired" cheap metal music stand that isn't used for the same reason ;)

Not sure, appears to be an extra attachment for $9 ???

Too bad they don't take paypal or I'd order one now. Tired of my card getting hacked and having to be replaced 3 times a year. At least with paypal, the vendor never sees your cc info.

FWIW, that's just the top half of a regular Hamilton two-piece folding stand to which they added a little rubber end to either keep it from scratching the tabletop or sliding around.

Granted, some folding stands these days are one-piece, so they won't work on a tabletop. But if you want both capabilities (desktop and full stand), just make sure you get a two-piece.

I actually have one of these that I found at a yard sale for $1:

It's very nice, but I bought it more for decoration than anything else. It's really too heavy to be lugging along to a uke meetup.

I have a nice Hamilton stand in white with the cutout circles in the tray to keep the weight down. It is very light and has a bag with a strap. I used it when I taught off campus as a portable lectern.

I dusted it off when I took up the ukulele and set it up a time or two, but it is sitting unused.

I never play standing up. I use a folding bed tray in melamine and beech with multiple angle adjustments that I got a thrift store. It works well. It even has fold out holders on the legs to hold more music books or pennywhistles etc.tray.jpg

I stand corrected. Desca does use paypal. You just don't know it's an option until after you check out and fill in all your shipping information. I suggested he add the paypal logo to his website so everyone knows this is a payment option prior to checkout.

I ordered one. Can't wait to get it, been looking for something like this for a long time.

Thanks to the OP for posting this thread !

For a tabletop stand at uke meetings and at home, I have found this bamboo cookbook stand to be sturdy and capable of holding up the Daily Ukulele books : http://amzn.com/B002JM0RN2 . It folds flat and it's not too heavy to throw in a canvas grocery bag to take along to meetings.
