i am stepping into the breach, dear friends

welcome to season 115

you may have noticed i occasionally cannot hold back from exclaiming "yeah baby" at the end of particularly groovy songs

this is because i am hip and happening

i would like to invite you to join me in a celebration of this ultimate expression of everything fab, by bringing me songs with the word "baby" in them

i must emphasise i am looking for "baby" as in "term of endearment", not "baby" as in "tiny infant"

so - a big "yeah bring it ON" to "hey baby i'm your telephone man" and a resounding "thanks but NO thanks" to "she's having my baby"

rules...
1. we are running late, in case you didn't notice, so please feel free to begin and post at once
2. multi-tracking, fuzz, creative video, whatevs, it's all good
3. up to three entries per person
4. no bonuses this week
5. multiple versions of songs most welcome - if someone, or indeed half a dozen people, beat you to a song you want to do, please do it anyway, the more the merrier etc etc

prizes...
there will be a prize for my favourite video of the week.
and another prize determined by random drawing out of a hat or other container.
so you can win by being whatever i think fabulous is
or by just existing really
bring it on
it is too early to say what the prizes might be, i am guessing maybe a cd or something uke-themed, when i get an idea for this i will let you all know!
UPDATE
ok i had a thought
(write that down, it doesn't happen often...)
prizes will be brady bunch movie soundtrack cd's
because you can take the chick out of the seventies
but you can't take the seventies out of the chick
yeah baby

okay i will tarry no longer, let the games begin
have fun
be good
rock on

commenting...
i'm thinking i might just comment on vids over on youtube...
leave the thread for general chit chat and coolness
obviously for times when youtube gets silly and doesn't LET me post a comment there, i will post a comment here on the thread instead

and...
i forgot to say it at the time, but NEW VIDS ONLY FOR THIS WEEK, please, i.e. vids you've made this week for this season

special announcement *spontaneous half-way-through-the-week-rule-change* IF YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE THREE SONGS, I AM CHANGING THE RULES, YOU CAN DO A FOURTH, PROVIDED IT'S "HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME"... because i think we've got ourselves a theme tune. yeah baby

Funny, I took all the "baby"'s out of "Sugar Sugar" when I made it into "Money Money" yesterday: http://youtu.be/MLiGXsg4jEc
Somehow they didn't seem to work with the money thing, so I changed them to "oh, yeah".

Here's one where we kept it in, from Sex Change week (S91?):

It's not cold outside too many places right now, but this is a great one ... would love to see some Seasonistas duet on this. We have a chart if you want it.

Janet and I have a duet in the works from Yacht Rock week that's perfect for this. Thanks for pushing that back to the top of the pile!
(Plenty of great Yacht Rock songs with "baby", for anyone else who didn't get their fill of that yet.)

I can really relate to this theme because of that show. It's like, part of my genes! My name is Janet and because of that show I can't stand to be called Jan. I don't know why...it was a kid thing. I watched the show religiously! But.........my last name was Bunch! So you can imagine the teasing! Plus, I looked like her back then. Then, of course, there was the commercial for Frito Chips "Munch a bunch a munch a bunch a fritos go with lunch", LOL. I've got some songs in mind but not much time to do 'em. So I better get crackin, yeah baby!!

I just got myself another multi track recorder so I needed an excuse to try it out.

I got the recorder mainly so I could set up for an acoustic recording more quickly so this is acoustic with minimal added effects. I lip synced the video and it is a bit out in places, especially the uke.

Some more Buddy Holly.

OOH Love this theme. I have a few ideas popping around in my head. One was something I was going to record myself doing even if I didn't for a season, and i just gotta pick two others to do. X3.

Oddly, though, one of the first few songs to pop into my head I can't do. Both for the use of "baby" as "infant," and for being highly inappropriate for the contest. XP

ukuleledaddy, the people who love us the most will ALWAYS say that they have come to see US, not to check how clean our house is. of course it isn't TRUE, they're gonna check for dust bunnies, but still, it's awfully nice of them to say it! ;)

can you corral them in one room and only clean that? would that leave you time to leap fully and completely headlong into this season?

Very well done!

No one likes the E chord. One of the ironies of the ukulele is that we often want to perform songs written with the guitar in mind, an instrument that's naturally in the key of E, so we get hit with that nasty E all the time. Ask Pa about substituting an E7 when the song calls for an E. Much easier to play.

Charlie does the E7 real well and we often use it when E is called for but it just didn't fit in this song.
We kind of went with the 444x

Thanks, Lynda, for stepping into the breach!

A week without the Seasons... unthinkable.

I bring you not a bird's eye view, but a bed's eye view. Fitting to the theme of the week and the spirit of the song, I come to you from my bed.

Might as well have called it "boob's eye view" because with the first four buttons of my shirt undone, I couldn't help but notice my left moob (man boob) peeking out enticingly. In fact, Mr Carrot, my mascot next to me there, made a pass after I was done recording, suggesting some real hanky panky.

Couldn't decide how to approach it vocally.. anyone whos heard the original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jML0QDbVHCY&feature=kp) knows its very pitchy and dragged out on some words..

There are so many Baby songs that I couldn't pick just one, so here's a bipolar pairing of two very different sentiments: The unabashedly romantic, sappy "Baby I Love Your Way" interrupted by the kind of misogynistic, ode-to-one-night-stands "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me." In other words, the Peter Frampton/ Mac Davis mashup that absolutely nobody, ever, wanted.

OK- this again...
<TCK>In 1979, when I was about 7, two brothers formed one of the most important bands in the California musical landscape (which is often questionable-see "Guns and Roses" if you don't believe me). I was probably about 11 when I first found the static-y signal of the local college radio station and got my first doses of the real magic that was music.
These guys played blues, R&B, punk, Rockabilly...what ever, and they threw it all together in such a palatable way- I was hooked.
Which is why I am shocked to realize that I have not played a Blasters song yet. No one has- not even you folks from their home (I was just joking about all that So-Cal kids...). Maybe they sucked, but I don't think so. Please promise me, if you do not know them, you will go and listen to the original. It is not to be missed.
Number 340- So Long Baby Goodbye, The Blasters.</TCK>

Boy howdy this is a fun place to hang! It's great to see a family of compadres, scattered around the world, sharing what they love! Some great stuff showing up. The Ukelites got the song I'm working on up first (great job!), but I'm going to do it anyway. May I say I'm tickled to have found this place! Very much fun! And a big Thanks! to those that host these things! It can't be all that easy to keep up with all this - a labor of love!

Yeah Baby, here's a tune from Swinging London, and another artist that hasn't appeared here on the Seasons AFAIK.
It's a massacre of an already disorganized tune, Syd Barrett's Baby Lemonade (http://youtu.be/_HK6-vE3jHk). My agonizingly long intro is very approximate.
I need a Hammond B3 or a glockenspeil or something...anyway, this is a tune that is deeply ingrained in my noggin...for all its pretensious druggy nonsense, there's some kind of emotional truth there methinks.

This Season is a first for me - my first 'composition', if you can call it that. When I woke up Sunday and read the theme, for some reason this idea popped into my head, despite the abundance of brilliant Yeah and Baby songs out there. So I started to pull it together, with the intention of also featuring my new Alida uke. The results are shown below.

One thing I realized is that when you do an original, you don't have to worry about someone getting to it first. I think I hit a couple of benchmark highs on this one too - the highest percentage of song lyrics identical to the title of the Season (100%) and possibly the greatest amount of suck up to the host.

BTW, if you want to see what our host actually looks like, I am pretty sure she is one of the people in this video; I'm just not sure which one. It's short, hope you enjoy it.

I cant give you anything but love, baby! A song from Jimmy McHugh (music) and Dorothee Fields (lyrics), first sung 1928 in Lew Leslie's Blackbird Revue. A german version was sung 1929 by Paul O'Montis, also very known from revues, and killed aged 46 by the Nazis in 1940 (all info from wikipedia)

The two verses are seldom sung, I found it at YT from Annette Hanshaw, also very successfull that time in the USA

So, here is a song I wrote with our host in mind. It should be sung by a woman - and I was hoping our host might find the time to do her own version... ¿pretty please? It's a simple blues in "A" (but the Verses and Chorus start with a D7).

The recording was an opportunity to show off my new Steel Strung Electric Ukulele (by East-Start). Basically, I start off with a "clean" sound for the first verse and chorus and then add a phase pedal, then a dirty distortion, then a downright dirty distortion and back to a phase pedal with chorus for the end. The solo used a kind of dirty blues sound - all courtesy of my Zoom GFX 8 Multi-pedal.

I'm no Eric Clapton, but boy did I have fun making this.

Clearly I've been wrestling with myself this morning and The Seasons won. So I sucked it up, carved out a couple of minutes and did a quick one take. It's no Barry White or Prince but it's the best I could do today. Great week BEV!

I bumped into this song by Greg Brown and I just had to do it. This week I learned that my brother David just got engaged to his girlfriend Sheryll and I could not be happier for them. It's been a long journey for them. They are finally finding the love they both so richly deserve and I am ecstatic for them. I had never even heard of this artist before this week so thank you again Seasons for uncovering another fabulous artist to explore.

Here's "Hey Baby, Hey" by Greg Brown. A song about that love we all aspire to find!

Well, I did not expect to have one ready before Sunday, because I'm working on two collaborations, and my collaborators need time to put them together. Provided I finish my parts tonight.

So what am I doing instead? Checking the forum, discovering Berni's wonderful original and BEV's terrific cover of it, and getting inspired to do my own take on it.

And, you know, since I have not one ounce of self-discipline whatsoever, well, here it is, having jumped the queue. Janet and Dave will have to wait just a bit longer (hopefully they're sound asleep anyway), and I will sacrifice yet another hour of sleep. (Sleep? Wuzzat?) Because I have a gig in the morning, and a packed weekend ahead. Including one more "baby" song with the Morristown Uke Jam at Marco D's Cuatro de Mayo party.

http://youtu.be/wAdlDnpukOk

Because I cannot leave a perfectly great, nice, easy song well enough alone, I have made some tweaks to Berni's creation - changed the last chord of the verse to the 5th for some dramatic tension, added some words here and there ... because additional rhymes called to me and I could. Berni, I hope you don't mind what I did to your awesome song.

Couple of flubs in the middle and the vocals could be clearer in spots and the uke (as always) softer, but not bad for a first take. I don't think additional ones will be as good, let alone better ... and ... two other projects await. Chop, chop. This was a fun diversion. From my other fun diversions.

I have a nice readable PDF chart of this version, if it's okay with Berni and anybody wants it.

Anyway, once I got a good track I had a heck of a time getting it to upload to YouTube, and even then it appears that my lead-in trailer with the SOTU credit got peeled off the front end..........sheesh. EDIT: tried another upload and I think it got the SOTU credit this time..........I hope......

This one is from 1965, made popular by Barbara Lewis. The mid-late 60s were some very tough years in the USA, but there was some very fine music produced in that period...........this is a good example.......

I had an incredibly busy week, and didn't think I'd get one in, but I made it happen! This was the first song I thought of, as it's one of 'those' songs for my wife and me. I had tried to work it up a couple of years ago, but never got it finished. When I came back to it, though, it was basically ready to go, only a couple of hours practice on it. Usually I spend much more time on a song, but I was just glad to get this one in. I haven't had any time to watcbh anybody else's entries for this season. I hope to make that happen next week, along with following along with Tin Pan Alley week...

Anyway, here's a little blues/hip-hop number from G. Love and Special Sauce.

Here we are, in under the wire. :^)
I decided to redo one I have done before [season 102], but with added kazoo and hopefully improved playing.
And filmed specially for Bev by borrowing a gorillapod to hold the camera upside down.
San Fransisco Bay blues.

I love BEVOMU. Like, really love her. And when she hosts, I decide I want to challenge myself! I want to do something special! Woo-hoo! This never ends well.

Oh, and some of you may have noticed (no, nobody has noticed), I've never met a diminished chord I didn't like. It's true that none of my arrangements are diminished-chord-free. Not even Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

So here I am with a terrible performance of a really difficult arrangement that I should have started working on Tuesday or at least Thursday. It's for videos like this that the three-take rule was invented (I know, because I invented it, and with good reason), because after take, oh, seventeen or something my hands started cramping up, then my brain started cramping up, and finally my personality cramped up and I went with take three.

I hope you enjoy it anyway. There are a couple of moments where it's not going all to pieces, and I really did have fun! Anyway, it's the thought that counts, right? Lynda, you've done an awesome job as hostess this week. Thanks so much for stepping up at the last minute. And thanks to all you Seasonistas for your general Fabulosity!

Janet (bonesigh) and I had a baby, baby. Conceived during 29moons' Yacht Rock week (S113), delivered this week for BEV's "Yeah, baby", complete with Milli-Vanilli-worthy lip-syncing by yours truly. My first attempt at actual (not faked) multi-tracking.

Thanks to Janet for not giving up on us, baby, when I didn't get it together in time for yachting Season, and thanks to Lynda for giving us a perfect second chance to complete it.

I sure hope it's happening ... FiL, Mark, you guys still there?

Yeah, baby ... this was fun. The Morristown Uke Jam did our classic uke "baby" song that we always do, at Mark ("Marco D")'s Cuatro de Mayo party this afternoon. My idea, Ken ("glass") led the practice session, FiL ("FiL") is presumably editing the video, and Mark is uploading it to MUJ's own YouTube channel and posting here.

Along with a passel of not-yet-Seasonistas. (But soon. My diabolical plan.)

I hope it gets posted soon!

did you really make it to seventeen?

or did you - like the white winged dove, perhaps - just hover - on the edge of seventeen

?

Lynda, if for some reason the fellas don't get it together to get our uke jam video posted tonight, okay if they post it tomorrow some time? It did get recorded today, but getting it here requires several steps by several people, all of whom had very busy weekends, and some or all of whom may very well have fallen asleep by now. (Me next. I was definitely on the edge...

The edge of what, I'm not so sure! Ha! I thought I picked that number randomly, but perhaps it was not random at all... ooh baby ooooooh... say ooooooooooooohhhhhh...

OK, So here's my end of the week entry with no multi-tracking or fun video so I'm very sorry BEVOMU I couldn't put that effort forward. But, I did think of you on Thursday when I stopped at a garage sale and scored about $150 worth of guitar pedals for $5 bucks which included the classic BOSS distortion pedal which I hope to incorporate soon.

Here's "Baby, We're Really In Love" by Hank Williams.

YACHT ROCK LIVES! Bravo! Bravo! Lots and lots of exclamation points!!!!!!!!

This is awesome guys. I really love it because I was running low on smooth cheesy goodness but you re-upped my levels and I'm good now. My vid entry was perfectly timed or I might have missed this. Seriously cool that you got this in. LOVE IT!

Funny story... My wife and I went to get some organic garden soil today and on the way she turned on my radio which was blaring my test copy of the "Yacht Rock" CD for the winners and she said, "Really! You are way too much into yacht rock. Stop it." I don't know if I can. We are planning our road trip to Portland in a few weeks and I must find a way to get my Yacht Rock playlist into the mix. Maybe when she's sleeping.

Oh well, Awesome guys.

First ever entry by the Morristown Uke Jam, including no less than FOUR seasonistas:
Marco D,
FiL,
UkeCan1 and
Glass!

We were together at our Cuatro de Mayo party and couldn't resist filming a contribution. (Maybe the first of many?) Hope you enjoy!

(And YES, we're aware that the rest of the Mexican-American world actually celebrates CINCO de Mayo. But it was the 4th. Deal with it.)

Oh, hooray! Marco de Mayo pulls it out at the last minute. This came out great! And now the whole Morristown Uke Jam are Seasonistas. The rest are all future solo Seasonistas ... hopefully they'll catch on after this. :)

Here's who's in the vid, left to right: Tom, Donna, Dave, Wendy ("UkeCan1", aka me) in the giant sombrero, Ken ("glass"), Jim (our resident Tin Pan Alley expert, who'd better be joining this week - you can't tell under the hat, but he dresses the part every day), Steve, Ro, FiL ("FiL", who edited the video), and Mark ("Marco D" in the serape, host and founder of the Morristown Uke Jam, and his bare feet). Featuring Mark's comfy living room, in his lovely house on the river.

Not in the video: Christine (left just before it), Sybil (arrived after), Betsy (not playing), and Susan (Mark's girlfriend, future uke player, our most excellent videographer, who, along with Mark, decorated the place and cooked up an amazing array of guacamoles, homemade salsas, sangrias, taco soup, and empanadas for us all).

Oh, I am up! I am always up. But I did not have access to the video, and did not think Mark and FiL would take kindly to me calling and waking them at a quarter to 6 in the morning (or 11-something last night). I apologize for worrying ... should have trusted them ... they are both excellent organizers who do what they say, and experienced video makers and posters. Thanks, guys!

What fun! Let's do it again!
