Cliff Edwards playing Low G???

This photo from Edwards' later years shows him with a tenor ukulele which appears to have a linear tuning. Did he indeed play such a setup? Does anyone know?

Sure looks thick for a G string... but would there have been suitable unwound nylon strings at that time?

I've read somewhere he played in Bflat often. Maybe the thick gauge helped with the flopiness of the strings tuned that low?

The Cliff Edwards trick for tenor ukulele is to play in Bb or C tuning with 1st and 4th strings an octave lower than 'standard' re-entrant. More details here:
