Greetings Earthlings and welcome to Season 117 of the Ukulele.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to bring me the music of science fiction! Anything counts: songs with a sci-fi theme such as Ziggy Stardust, Space Oddity, (lots of Bowie!) Space Cowboy, and songs from sci-fi TV, films, or radio such as the Red Dwarf theme, Tubular Bells or if you want to do The Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News, go nuts. Songs you've written are especially welcome. Write a song about your favourite sci-fi or write your own Bowie style ballad, all are welcome.

I'm also very keen this week to see some creativity. Make your own costume, write a whole concept album or even make your own sci-fi short.

Rules:
- One official entry per person.
- Up to 3 bonus songs allowed.
- Multitracking allowed and very much encouraged.
- Usual rules about posting apply, wait until midnight Hawaii time please!
- Make a new video and say the usual Season 117 blah, blah, blah.
- If you think a song counts, go for it!

Prizes:
There will be 3 awards this week:

Bill and Ted's Most Excellent award - For the song I consider most excellent musically.
Doc Brown's Great Scot! award - For the video/song with the best creativity shown.
May the Force be With You award - For the video chosen randomly by the Force (out of a hat).

Each prize will be a £5 donation to the charity of the winners choice. There will also be a small geeky prize for each winner.

Any questions go ahead and PM me.

Playlists:

When looking for a song I came across Jon’s Space Girl Song done for my season 55.
I liked it, so got my android to give it a go. Unluckily for you my android was programed by me and modelled on me as well. And it insisted on using the banjo ukulele.
I think the song is written by Peggy Seeger. I did change the gender to make it more of a Space Boy Song.
This will be a bonus please Max.

Oh, what fun! Max, I adore you. Last night we were out at a wonderful live music show (second of two, actually!) until quite late, so we checked out the new Season on our phones. As usual, at first I could think of almost nothing, but within a minute, I was entirely distracted from the band on stage, my head was so abuzz with more excellent ideas than I could possibly do if the Season lasted a month. I typed them up as they surfaced, so I would remember later, and immediately messaged some potential collaborators. I am looking forward to some nerdy good fun this week. Eager to see what everyone brings.

Awesome theme Max. Thought I'd get one in quick, I've been wanting to do it for a while. Doesn't fit as well as other Bowie songs that I figured would be better done by others but a quick look at Wiki suggests some Sci-Fi influence to it, and I've added some spaced-out effects with my RP-45.

This'll just be a bonus though, I've got something better in mind too.

As a bonus (to me, although not necessarily to you who might watch it) here is a recording I made a while back of the love theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Astro Boy Theme. He had a Bum Gun!
This will be my entry please Max.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BytfZdw4qOI

I believe these to be the lyrics from the original 19602 B&W series as the words changed with the newer series.

There you go, Astro Boy,
On your flight into space
Rocket high, through the sky
For adventures soon you will face!

Astro Boy bombs away,
On your mission today,
Here's the countdown, and the blastoff,
Everything is go Astro Boy!

Astro Boy, as you fly,
Strange new worlds you will spy,
Atom celled, jet propelled,
Fighting monsters high in the sky!

Astro Boy, there you go,
Will you find friend or foe?
Cosmic Ranger, laugh at danger,
Everything is go Astro Boy!

Crowds will cheer you, you're a hero,
As you go, go, go Astro Boy!

During Hamís descent, technical problems led the capsule to overheat and plunge into the Atlantic Ocean, 60 miles off course from the recovery ship. Water began to seep into Hamís capsule. Fortunately, he was rescued.

Hamís so-called ďsmileĒ was a fear grimace, which looks similar to a human smile. Indeed, the famed primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall noted that he was the most terrified chimpanzee she had ever seen. Yet the truth behind Hamís so-called smile was rarely, if ever, discussed in the media that covered this event.

Not a bonus, not a sing along, just a bit of space history.

A fantastic theme this week.

Personally, I have listened to much more Hawkwind than Pink Floyd in the last 40 years.
Probably because I saw them play here in 1975 to about 50 people in an auditorium sized for 100 times that.

Light show, costumes, synthesizers, sensory overload....

I have since bought pretty much their entire catalog, and seen Nik Turner's version of the band about 20 and again 10 years ago when he toured here.

In Case of Sonic Attack, Do Not Panic...

We're children playing in the sun
A sense of freedom on the run
We never knew what time it was
We just knew how sublime it was

Our course determined by our stars
My momma knows just where we are
The earth is forming far below
Our dragons know which way to go

Spacing out, we're spacing in
Phasing out, we're phasing in
Turning up by burning out
Lifting off and gazing in

Our luck, it changes with the tide
Our constellations changing side
Macro mirror-image fades
Our over-conscience colour shades

We're astral-planing, floating free
On our continuum frequency
The rain is formed out of the stone
Metamorphose, tetraform

Well it is not your standard take on the song. I was struck by the lines "I don't feel no pain"
and was wondering what that chimp felt like as he hurtled into space. The Bonzos were famous
for their novelty songs but that particular song has always had an eerie uncomfortable edge
to it... all about manufactured images that have no basis in reality and don't exist.
The chimp smile justifies everything... look he is smiling so everything is OK.
We often ask animals to do things that we would never do ourselves.

pabrizzer - Astro Boy Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BytfZdw4qOI&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): This sounds so full; that bari sounds amazing and your usual deep and perfect vocals make this a joy to listen to.

xommen - The Boy Falls From the Sky (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvFsrQhOEos&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Really enjoyed this one, your strum is beautiful and makes the uke sound lovely. As usual, sang as though you meant every last word. Brilliant!

southside mike - Rocket Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIVS6fER1X0&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Elton John is really, really tricky to do well on the uke (at least in my opinion), but you captured this song perfectly and then made it your own. The strumming/picking really makes this one, and that's before we factor in your brilliant vocals.

frisbee fred - Rocket Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McczQUxclD8&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL&index=6): Your voice is really suited to this, if we get 20 versions as good as this I'll be very happy indeed! And don't worry about the "lousy" acoustics, I think it adds something nice and spacey to the whole performance.

ukuleledaveey - I'm the Urban Spaceman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T204f_uKLtw&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): I always love a bit of kazoo! It works perfectly in this song and the uke is sounding great, really bopping along to this one, thanks!

John Sargent - Space Worms (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nfNz_rZbR0&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): I love this, the banjo uke sounds fantastic and always lovely to have a new person singing in the seasons! I love the idea of bluegrass musicians from space and I shall definitely be looking this film up!

~dave~~wave~ - D-Rider (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAk9Q3Kazho&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Love this video, had to watch it a few times just to laugh at the alien! Love the song too, really space-age! Thank you!

To do this properly I need TCK's tatoos, a motorcycle, and lelouden and bird'seyeviewofmyukulele on either side of me as Magenta and Columbia. I saw Rocky Horror 27 times in late 1981 and 1982. Each time was Friday night at the TLA on South Street in Philadelphia. I knew almost the whole movie by heart but never could really understand all the lyrics to this song. Had to take some liberty with the key here since I do not have Mr. Loaf's vocal range. Please make this one my official entry into Season 117.

Here's the first thing I thought of when I saw the theme. I suspect this will bring back memories of behaving obnoxiously at midnight movies for the people of my generation (you younger folks who've only seen it on TV or a DVD have NO IDEA why anyone willingly watched this movie, I bet--it really required a communal experience). Let's get our Rocky Horror on! (I considered singing it in a tight closeup on my lips, as per the film, but then you wouldn't have been able to see the ukulele....)

another bonus

well i say a bonus - it might not count, the song itself is not very science fiction-y, but it's from jeff wayne's musical version of the war of the worlds, which is very very science fiction-y indeed

and the clips are from  "blake's 7", which is extreeeeeeeeeeeeemely science fiction-y

and they feature   avon, who is surely the epitome of science fiction fabulousness

for those not familiar with the show or the fabulousness that is avon, this video presents the story of how avon kissed a girl, and he liked it. he thought the girl was a goodie, but she turned out to be baddie, which is how these things do go sometimes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ftXD5jCoSM

if the song doesn't quite cut if for a bonus, this can just be a just-for-fun sort of... thing

She may be playing one of his flutes because she took one if his up there.

She had to have her feet under feet hooks or her blowing would propell her around the 'room'.

Cady Coleman was actually a classmate of mine at MIT. She has taken her education quite a bit further than I have.

gentlemen, calm your dear selves, seven of nine simply sports the sort of oh-so-practical, comfortable, workaday combination of tight spandex, no pockets, and high heels, that any girl about the universe would be glad to wear, indeed i am sure most female seasonistas don similar apparel on a daily basis

Oh, yes, indeed ... our normal workaday wear. Just don't want to stop hearts across the world, you know, so we have to tone it down for the videos. Save those dangerous weapons for actual combat situations. It's for your benefit, fellas. Better we leave that stuff to their imaginations, hey, Lynda? (Oh, right, you know all about that....)

With the science fiction theme this week, this song was the first that came to mind for me. I had to learn a few new chords for it, though!—E+, D#, and G#. Chords I'm not yet very good at. Still turned out okay, though.

I'm also playing my most "science fictiony" uke—a funky 19" baritone from Bruce Wei, which I strung with Southcoast classical metal strings and put chrome bridge pins on in an attempt to give it kind of a steampunk look and sound.

Gene Roddenberry wrote lyrics for the original Star Trek theme, mostly so he could claim 50% of the royalties for the song. The words are a bit corny, but there is something kind of poignant about them, sung from the perspective of a woman left behind on earth while her lover is out galavanting around the galaxy.

Due to bit of a spending spree today, it's a night of many firsts for me here in Myanmar. First time I've played my own 6-stringed bass ukulele (sometimes known as a guitar) as I just bought one this afternoon. Sounds beautiful, and not only is the guitar made in Myanmar, it's made right down the road in San Chuang township where many of my friends live. It's also my first time scanning and printing something from home, as I got a new peripheral for the 'puter. Lastly, it's my first time covering a TMBG tune. If you don't know what TMBG means, you wouldn't really care, and if you do know, I hope you're excited as I. Time to print out the lyrics and sing Particle Man.

Here's a pic of my new guitar. On the wall hangs the cheap gig bag I got with it. It's labeled ROCKWIND (whether that means air movement or cranking something, your guess is as good as mine) and that is a recent picture of the Rolling Stones on the bag. The Golden Years Rolling Stones. I think it's an appropriate gig bag for a guy approaching middle age.

https://scontent-a-kul.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t1.0-9/10348629_10203013494317115_1581312473520975978_n.j pg

The other somewhat major purchase I made today was a printer/scanner/copier. In my last uke video, my mom asked me how I learn all these new songs every week. Well, I don't really. I can't remember what I played I few weeks ago. Instead, I just look up the chords on the internet, have a cheat sheet, a cue card, there taped to the tripod as I play. I am getting tired of having to transcribe the chords and lyrics from my computer screen to paper, so I felt it was time to buy a printer.

Due to its multifunctionality, I used my new toy to scan some drawings I made too. May not be a SF production per se, but I hope the host, and my friends here on the UU enjoy.

Max, if I hadn't gone with monkeys for Season 112, the theme would have been outer space. Between coming off an illness and family commitments this week, I'm not going to have time to learn a new song, but I have a couple of old originals that fit the theme. This is a song I wrote in 1983 called "Seeing Them Off". It's about a guy driving a young couple to the spaceport, so they can go explore the cosmos, while the driver maybe stops for pancakes on his way home. This is one of my favorite things musically that I've ever written. Over the years, I've often played it as an instrumental. Partly that's because I've never written a song that's harder to sing.

uke4ia

This is a bonus song. In 1979, I was working on a progressive rock song about traveling through outer space called "Lightsail" that would have been about 8 minutes long. I never finished the music for it, but a couple years later I came up with some music I really liked for the song's bridge. So now all that remains is the middle of the song. But I've found it's useful to have a couple of songs that are only 2 minutes long. If you're given the chance to play a 10 or 15 minute set, having some really short songs allows you to fit an extra song into the set.

Finally finished working it out Tuesday, had no time Wednesday, recorded it on my dinner at work today in bits so that I could try and get it edited together tonight before I pack my stuff for NukeFest tomorrow to return on Sunday to Season 118! Aha. Because it was done at work through poor speakers the quality was a bit sketchy to begin with but having ran it through WMM2.6 then Youtube the quality is rather poor at best :( And try as I might, I couldn't PIP overlay the "chances" riff so I've just added it to the end.

Hope you enjoy (:

My first thought this week was the main theme for Star wars on Chromatic Harmonica and Uke, but I could see that I was never going to get the harp part fluent enough to be able to overdub the uke [or the other way round[ :^(
So I looked again.
After the problems I had last week with the video I decided to do an MP3 and then just make a simple video for youtube. That was certainly easier and a much smaller file so it uploaded OK and the PC never crashed once.
I am playing here in the Willbe band which is a 5 piece studio band who do not play live gigs.

The song is of course the Bonzo Dog Doodah band's Urban spaceman. [Or was it recorded when they were the bonzo Dog Dada band? I don't know]

Needless to say the early attempts haven't gone well.

CeeJay - Cantina Band (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeoIz-6jqhI&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Wow, loving this. Yeah, it's rough round the edges, but I can imagine being sat in a space bar somewhere on the outer rim of the galaxy sipping whatever the space equivalent to a pale ale is while you rock this out on the open mic! You really get into it by the end as well. Cheers!

uke4ia - Seeing Them Off (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAi0F81W7uA&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): This is a really enjoyable song. The lyrics I especially like, my favourite line is: "And they'll go, go test their wings against the void". It seems to sum up the human desire to explore and discover all that we can. Love the chords in the break as well.

TheGreenHat - U-Uranus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ceKLrxlPjI&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): What a first entry! Fantastic strumming going on here, adds a really nice extra dimension to the song. Welcome to the Seasons, I feel privileged you chose to begin your journey through time and space with us here in my Season.

greenie44 - Satellite of Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNIMeh0MWSQ&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Yes, this is awesome. Your singing on this works brilliantly. Couple that with the "bom bom bom"s and we've got ourselves a song that's a joy to behold.

Jazzbanjorex - Mr. Roboto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwxJSOLLePc&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL&index=24): Full of energy, fantastic singing and brilliant playing, as always. You managed to hold my attention for the full length of the song, which, considering I'm the "youth of today", is pretty impressive!

krabbers - Martian Girl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlF8dhkrhv4&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): I was laughing along with your jokes, so don't worry. Your lyrics are always brilliant and this one here is no exception, thanks for bringing this along!

bonesigh - Across the Universe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KM3ntBMgGw&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Another one I was hoping someone would bring along this week. The playing on this one is particularly nice, I always really struggle when trying to play this! Thank you!

ChrisDeston821 - The Eve of War (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljMioh_C8fI&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Really well done video, love the creativity flowing here. Really enjoyable playing too!

RAB11 - The Final Countdown (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQWxplGYTNg&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Brilliant idea doing this song, hadn't even crossed my mind. Love the singing of the intro as well, thanks!

Lumpy Wafflesquirt -I'm the Urban Spaceman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnmM9cdVTBA&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): This is inspired, especially love the bass parts, really making me chuckle! Thank you.

wetigers - Doctor Who Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bZJmtr0rY8&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed this. I thought you'd be able to utilize Saskia's glock to come up with something good this week, but I didn't expect something this good. I should've known really, shouldn't I? Your songs are always superb!

A Seasons first right here ladies, gentlemen and green amorphous blobs, the first time someone has been banned from a Season!!!

I don't believe I've ever done this before in the seasons. The same song twice. Well I thought that being as Max LOVED this song so much I'd try and improve on my first version ;-) Please don't hate on me Max. I really do understand if you can't bare to watch all the way through though. I have always had a slightly mischievous and cheeky nature I'm afraid. Sorry. :-)
My excuse - it has been such a lovely summer's day today I just couldn't resist taking my Uke out into the lovely English countryside.

I'm so jealous. I couldn't get time off work to go to N'ukefest, it's about 30 minutes from where I live!

Really didn't think I'd get this one done!

The truth is out there.

As you might have expected, here is the first of two SF songs I have written this week. This was filmed at an abandoned house not far out of town known as the "Casa de los nans" (The Dwarves' House). I had considerable trouble editing this. My editing programme is anything but intuitive... So the sync is not perfect... Grrrr...

I DID IT.

Took me like, an hour or two, but I finally got it. This is my official entry, and possibly my only (unless I can get some time by season's end).
I love this song, as well as Voltaire, the artist. It was, quite literally, the first thing to pop into my head. It's also good for mother's day week, as my mom is a huge trekkie. But yeah. finally got this in, so I hope you all enjoy.

Fun facts:
This song was originally written in 2001 for the album "Banned on Vulcan" and, for obvious reasons, didn't have the last two verses. It was also only a guitar/vocal song. Being as fans of Voltaire's wanted him to update it after the release of "Enterprise," he couldn't help but add the last two verses onto his more instrumentalized, sea-shanty remake of it for his 2012 album, "BiTREKtual," (a largely sci-fi themed album) in which he actually refers to the final verse as a "bonus verse" as many didn't think he'd add a verse for, that part of the franchise.

this is not a bonus
this is not even an entry
this is ... well you know ... a singalong

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us, it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go 'round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

When I saw one of Linda's entries, "I Don't Wanna Live On The Moon", I thought she had beaten me to this song, then I realised it was Mars I didn't want to live on, although the moon gets a mention, as well.
This song has the same sentiments as Linda's.

Apologies in advance, but someone had to do this one ... and I was pretty sure no one else would. (Though it was fun to imagine Linda, Lynda, Janet, Myrna, Shaggy, Maria, Natalia, et al doing it. Or Pabrizzer. :))

A song, later made into a movie, about what happens when hot valley girls meet hot aliens. In case it isn't obvious from the title, if small people are in the room, you might want to remove them ... or wait till after their bedtime.

Finally a song for which I have the right look ... I look just like Geena Davis in the movie. Minus about eight or ten inches and plus a couple of decades. Oh, and her bikini was hot pink. But, you know ... the hair.

You probably can't see them, but I am wearing monster earrings, with googly eyes (one big eye per monster). Hey. They're up there.

http://youtu.be/p-QKx5FdoHc

[It wasn't easy making this video. Three different sets of characters - Julie (middle), her friends (head tilt left), the alien (head tilt right), playing that riff while doing all that talking and head tilting, and then ... you know ... as I was rehearsing last night, my brand new housemate who barely knows me walks in just as I was reaching the ... ahem ... climax. And then he was up this morning when I was trying to record it. It got a whole lot easier to finish it once he left for work.]

The song is by the amazing Julie Brown (https://www.youtube.com/user/JulieBrownTV), who had a string of small hilarious hits in the '80's, including "'Cause I'm a Blonde" (http://youtu.be/guGccaoic2A) ("yeah, yeah, yeah" - from the movie), "I Like 'Em Big and Stupid" (http://youtu.be/vEU_5lVjRFQ), and (if you are going to watch one of these, watch this one) (Everybody Run) "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun" (http://youtu.be/xG3yGdQYwqg). Love her. Check her out.

The movie made from the song is also terrific silly fun ... starring Geena Davis as a hairdresser unlucky in love, Julie Brown as her sidekick, and Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey, and Damon Wayans as blue, red, and yellow aliens who crash-land in Geena's swimming pool and mingle with the valley people. Oh, and here's the original song (http://youtu.be/UT24AGG2LTc), which for some reason was not in the movie.

(Apologies too, apparently I said the wrong Season number. Is anyone else having trouble with that now that it's gone into triple digits? I just can't keep track any more. Especially at 6 in the morning. Sorry, Max.)

This is not an entry. Nor a bonus. Nor even a singalong. This is me being beaten by a song fromy youth. When I was 12/13, I used tk frequent a site called Newgrounds, which was full of user-created Flash content, videos, games etc. Most of it was pure rubbish but then there were gems like this:

The Ultimate Showdown: http://youtu.be/4WgT9gy4zQA

It is the nerdiest song I know and I had to attempt it, but I just can't manage it fluently so I went for the piss-take approach of an already novelty song.

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ... Cecilia made her Seasons debut. And now she's back! We've been singing this particular sci-fi movie song together since we first heard it, so of course it was one of the first things I thought of to do for this Season, and I messaged her about it Saturday night as soon as I did.

And so, I present to you now, our Weird Al Yankovic Star Wars parody song, featuring Cecilia, who wields the meanest light saber on this side of the galaxy ever seen on video. Check her out:

http://youtu.be/jIW7RRd-EIU

Cecilia is getting tired of me telling her to get a uke. If you want to see it happen, she needs to hear it from YOU.

She wants me to apology for the couple of flubbed lines, even though I'm pretty sure it's fewer flubs per verse than my usual.
Not bad at all, I think, for a five-minute song.

I will tell you though, the one line in the middle that we completely missed is "Because Yoda sensed in him much fear".
It's a great line, so now at least you can still marvel at the lyrical perfection that is Weird Al.

Speaking of the length of the song, can I just say ... this was by far the hardest song I've ever tried to fit on a one-page chart. (The second-hardest was "Earth Girls Are Easy", which I did last night.) But I frickin' did it. FOUR columns. If you ever want an extremely readable, clear, one-page chart of this or any song I do ... just ask.

[After we made the video it occurred to me to check our jam group's extensive Dropbox of 1500+ song charts (many of them by FiL) to see if we had "American Pie" (because, of course, that might have saved me a ton of labor if we had). Indeed, there it was. On TWO pages. :)]

And now, the gaping hole in my "ouevre" has been filled. I have now covered all three major funny-songwriter / parodists - Allan Sherman (twice), Tom Lehrer, and now Weird Al. AND Julie Brown. On the same day! What next, I wonder .....

Sometimes you fly to close to the sun and get burned like Icarus. This may be the first (and last) attempt to cover a portion of Rush's seminal album 2112 on ukulele. Challenge the guitar gods and get burned. Ah well, don't say I didn't warn you foolish mortal. No I can't play like Alex Lifeson or sing like Geddy Lee. Nor does this song suit the instrument used as I discovered once I got waist deep in the weeds on this one. Screw it, I came this far I'm just gonna post the frakkin' thing. You have been warned.

For those not familiar with this Rush concept album, the basic premise: in dystopian future where lives are controlled by the dispassionate Priests of Syrinx who control society. A youth discovers an ancient artifact - a stringed musical instrument which emits wonderful sounds. Is it a guitar? Some other 4 stringed instrument perhaps? Who can say?

Apparently music is one of the things lost to the mists of time and discarded like most of the artifacts of our ancient failed civilization. Realizing the significance of this wonder, our protagonist brings it before the priests only to be rejected by their hatred for a past no longer remembered, only feared and their love for conformity and obedience.

I wonder if they had been reading Terry Partchett's Soul Music (the 16th discworld novel)

A young harpist, Imp Y Celyn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imp_Y_Celyn) from Llamedos, comes to Ankh-Morpork in hopes of becoming famous. Unable to afford the Musicians Guild (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilds_of_Ankh-Morpork) fees, he and fellow unlicensed musicians Lias Bluestone (a troll percussionist) and Glod Glodsson (a dwarf hornblower) form "The Band with Rocks In," named after Lias' tuned rocks. When Imp's harp is destroyed, he acquires a guitar from a mysterious shop, unaware that it contains the awareness of a primordial music that was responsible for bringing the universe into existence. Imp takes the new name "Buddy," as "Imp Y Celyn" literally means "bud of holly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_Holly)," and Lias starts calling himself "Cliff."

Hey everyone! I was finally able to get a couple songs recorded tonight. After being on-call this week and I wasn't able to record anything until now. Okay! So here's song number two for the week. This really was so much cooler in my head but time constraints kept the effects to a minimum. I haven't delved much into the electric side of the ukulele during the seasons especially a live recording but BirdsEye and Ukedaddy inspired me this week so I went all super nova on this one. This one is by the original Space Ace himself Ace Frehley from his 1978 solo record. Sorry for the unfortunate mic placement. This is New York Groove.

Hi All, Procrastinator's special here:

Had a crazy week, but could not face skipping Max's season, especially with such a tasty theme.

With very little time I had to reject a few challenging numbers: "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and "Space Monkey", but was able to do a quick kitchen table "Interstellar Overdrive"/"Here Come the Martian Martians" take.

Early Pink Floyd and Jonathan Richman at his goofiest are kind of a spacey pairing.
Hope you enjoy. Off to watch and comment a little..thanks!

Haha! That was fun Rustyy! It was the first song I thought of for this week but i decided to do a different song (if I can even find time to record today - life sure is busy these days!). It also would have worked for one hit wonders week - it reached #1 in the Billboard pop charts in 1958, but Sheb Wooley never reached stardom with a song again.

Well see what happens when I wake up on Sunday and find no new Season theme? I hopped out of bed with this song running in my head so I just had to lay it down quick and dirty. Fortunately Colleen, my wife had an early appointment with a ferrier so I could do it. Here's the classic Creedence tune "It Came Out of the Sky" off my favorite CCR album Willie and the Poor Boys.

So, I had the best plan. With little time for recording this week, I added some sci-fi tunes to a uke cabaret gig I did on Friday night and brought my little video cam. But the flipcam may be on its last legs as it decided on its own to not record the set (I SWEAR I hit record!)

So, this afternoon, instead of mowing the meadow in the front yard, I recorded these songs again. The jitteryness about halfway through could be a result of the camera's fatigue, or it could be evidence of some "hazy cosmic jive" - you be the judge. Unfortunately, I can't blame the technology for my off-key singing on the high notes.

I know we've already had this one once this week, but here's Starman (again)

Here's a song about androids falling in and out of love from Tubeway Army's new wave, sci fi classic "Replicas". Tubeway Army's Gary Numan (best known for another new wave, sci fi classic, "Cars") developed ideas for the album from Philip K. Dick's wonderful sci fi meditation on identity, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (which would become one sci fi cinema's greatest achievements a few years later as "Blade Runner"). So much classic-ness here. My costar is Liam, who was kind enough to host my wife Jessica and me this weekend in lovely San Francisco, the setting for Dick's novel.

I have managed to get an entry in this week after all. My hand is settling down so I did a quick one take of Ticket to the Moon from ELO's 1981 album "Time". This was a concept album whose theme was someone transported 100 years forward in time from 1980 to the end of the 21st century.

I used images of the moon from Google images rather than the usual "talking head" video.

In fact, just checked Wikipedia, and it was rawhide, but he was in dozens of other western films and tv shows as well.

So, here's the moment you've all (well, maybe some of you have) been waiting for!

First of all a few shout outs to some special entries this week:

Ukey Dave - Blue Moon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09OV3Gd4Q9c&index=17&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): For having the cheek to do not one, but two versions of this song this week!

TheGreenHat - U-Uranus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ceKLrxlPjI&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL&index=22): What an intro to the Seasons, a fantastic first entry which I just had to give some props to!

Markwo - Star of the Evening (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCZD79vkcAg&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPJUlIvfB-gxg2W2kl6vvWD&index=17): I absolutely loved this bonus track, if you haven't watched it, do! It's so sweet.

John Sargent - Space Worms (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nfNz_rZbR0&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL&index=7): He got the folk over at Future Folk commenting on his video which is great work!

Barbablanca - Take Me With You Doctor Who (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toRomPIZkKw&index=30&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPJUlIvfB-gxg2W2kl6vvWD)
wetigers - Doctor Who Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bZJmtr0rY8&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL&index=31): BBC America using videos from the Seasons, how cool is that?! I'm claiming this Season as the most famous one yet!

Now down to business.

Bill and Ted's Most Excellent award - For the song I consider most excellent musically, goes to:

wetigers - Doctor Who Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bZJmtr0rY8&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL&index=31): How could I not? Superbly produced, spot on musically and grabbing the attention of the world's media! Simply amazing!

Doc Brown's Great Scot! award - For the video/song with the best creativity shown, goes to:

Chris Deston - The Eve of War (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljMioh_C8fI&index=26&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL): Brilliant use of lighting and a really eerie opening which I just loved!

May the Force be With You award - For the video chosen randomly by the Force (out of a hat), goes to:

http://youtu.be/2p4Utms1KGI

wee_ginga_yin - Quark, Strangeness and Charm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjLsspTd7ew&list=PLOoxH4wdrzrPWYhNeAKOF0l_jFT4TvaWL&index=9): It was up there on the creativity list anyway, so I love that this was picked out randomly.

If all the winners could reply on here with a charity or a charitable cause they would like me to make a donation towards I'll do that on your behalf as the prize. If you could also private message me with an address I can send a small prize to I'll get that sorted too as quickly as I can!

Thanks to everyone for such a great Season.

We gotta go back, Marty!

Hzzah! Thank you kindly sir, could my donation be made to Ace Centre North: http://acecentre.org.uk/
It's a local charity that experts in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT).

For those who don't know, I work in an SEN school (a community special school with approximately a third of children with profound and multiply learning difficulties/wheelchair users, two thirds complex or severe learning disabilities or autistic spectrum conditions) and this charity helps develop and implement systems that allow communication from our children in a variety of ways. I know that they worked closely with the child for whom the sound box was bought in memoriam and since his sound box got me the win I feel it fitting a charity that worked with him should benefit.

On the same note, we have put forward to try to raise funds to build a wheelchair accessible swing at our school, there are three days of voting left and if people could vote (it requires a 2min registration form then search for "Oakdale" and press vote) I'd be very appreciative: https://www.engagemutual.com/foundation/projects/14943/
This grant will provide a dual swing so ALL children at school whether in a wheelchair or not can play inclusively together.*

Thanks again and congrats to the other winners and the special mentions :)
