Okay, okay! Yes, I was up very late last night. UU was down ): as you know. I've been working hard at home here because our basement flooded with the heavy rain we had a couple of days ago. What a mess!!

Anyway, here it is your new Season Challenge. Anyone who knows me knows I love puppets. Puppets that have moving mouths (: I must have about 30 of 'em! I would like you to post a video with your puppet playing the uke. I would like him/her to do a parody of a popular song. Something that is well known would be good, but not necessary. If your not comfortable with coming up with your own you may use someone else's. Delve into your inner child and get silly!!!!!

Rules:

I'm pretty loosey goosey on the rules so pretty much anything goes. Just don't get too liberal with the rules.

Here are some typical rules that tend to go week to week.

• The video should be a new video recorded for the week.

• Multitracking encouraged but not required.

• The video should say somewhere in the video that it is for the 118th Season of the Ukulele.

• Videos must be posted to this thread. Do not post any until midnight tonight Hawaii time.

• The contest ends at midnight Hawaiian time on Sunday night, May 25th.

• 2 entry limit.

• Post as many bonus video's as you like. Even if they are not new (:

Grand prize will be a window cling of your choice made by me. If you send me a simple design I will do that one. It can go on a uke or a window, car or whatever!

My family will choose one winner and there will be 2 drawn at random from a hat. Those 2 prizes to be determined.

Nah, Nah, Nah, Na Nah, Nah.

My puppet doesn't play the uke. He does dance though, so maybe I can do a video of him dancing to a uking song.

Just had a thought, maybe he will play the uke after all - and dance! :old::cool::music:

Yes, yes, yes! Make it up if you don't have anything! Here is a sample video I made today. Very poorly done but acceptable. I took things from around the house and spliced them together with the movie maker. I used a silicone pot holder some toilet paper and a doggie sweater (: You didn't think I'd let you have all the fun did you??

OK. Kookaburra Down Under.
My "Parody" has a back story - quite sad really.
Down Under was a huge hit for a group called Men At Work.
Greg Ham and Colin Hay were the main musos and composers.
After the song was out for many years the owners of the rites of the song Kookaburra Sits In The Old Gum decided that the flute part was actually a direct take of that song and sued for 60% of the profits. The case was won by them but they were awarded 5% only. The lawyers did VERY WELL!
Greg Ham's friends claim that the whole saga contributed to the death of Greg (found in his house with no suspicious circumstances).
Judge for yourself by listening to both songs here - (just the flute solo remember)

Lyrics
I come from the land down under
Where everything is so funny
I sit in my tree laughing all day
But if you do my song I’ll make you pay

I am the kookaburra
I laugh all the way to the bank
Can you hear Can you hear me laughing
My lawyers helped me cash in

Men at work had a big hit with Down Under
But the flute played a tune a lot like my song
I got my lawyers to bring on litigation
And now I’m laughing and raking the cash in

Kookaburra Down Under. This is great Brain. I loved every bit of it! Smile on my face all the way to the bank. I didn't know all that about the song. Very sad. Yeah it sounds pretty much the same but then again many songs do and it really could have just been a coincidence. What do you think? This was a great way to wake up in the morning. You are a wonderful musician and singer and I always love your entries. How many times have you been the first video entry, your quick? (:

These lyrics are actually mostly written by our host for this season, I just adapted them to create this. It is of course based on All I want is you by U2. I thought of skipping this season because parody's and puppets aren't really my thing. Then I got this stop motion vid idea, and as the rules are really loosy goosy, I'm guessing this should be ok as an entry ;). I used a shaker egg while recording the initial uke and voice track. I then later added some bass extra vocal and mandolin. All instruments used also feature in the video (except for the shaker egg I guess, it was a white one).

I hope this qualifies. I'm not a puppeteer so no puppets from me. Here is a song with Puppets in the title. Its the Hideous "Puppets on a String". The Eurovision winner of 1967 (I doubt anyone in the States knows of the Eurovision Song contest. Its actually the biggest viewed non-sporting event in the world. Apparently (according to Wiki) even Sandie Shaw hated this song. It won hands down for the UK.
This is the ONE AND ONLY time I will sing this song on Ukulele.

And how often did you say "one take"? ;)

Yep I play the cheap Martin S-1 and really love it. I'm saving my pennies because I'd really love a vintage Martin at some point. I've worn part of the wood out with my heavy handed strumming. I like to think of it as developing its own character but i've only had it since last August so better go a bit easier on it before it ends up looking like Willie Nelsons famous guitar.
I said "one take" ONCE. Oh and I think Krabbers may have turned me into a compulsive liar. ;-)

Right, I was at a bit of a loss and then Dave comes out with the genius idea to use Puppet in the song title. So I stretched thay further and did a song by a band called the Meat Puppets. Unfortunately Lady Gaga wasn't on hand to provide a costume so I've called on a mysterious other-worldly being who bears an uncanny resemblance to me behind a filter to play it for me.

Xommen, I thought this was a very nice entry (; Catchy little U2 tune. So glad you didn't skip my season. It wouldn't have been the same without you. Your video made me smile and there was lovely playing and singing as usual. Using the "rule" was a good idea for a parody. There is no other song in the world quite like it.....and if there are puppies made from your little animals shenanigans, I want one!

UkeyDave, Puppet on a String. Oh, you know I love ya Dave but......not a puppet in sight and it's not a parody. You playing and singing are excellent (: Perhaps you will be inspired to make another entry??

RAB11, your coming along quite nicely as a new uke player here. I like your tunes. Thank you for introducing me to another song that I'm not familiar with but it's kind of a cool tune. But again, like I said to Dave...there were no puppets and I don't think you changed the words to make it a parody. Perhaps I need to be more clear on the rules ): I feel so low having to disqualify 2 entries!! I don't think this has ever been done before. :(

bonesigh
05-19-2014, 02:24 PM
I was really hoping people would have fun with this. Get a friend to help. You play while your friend has "something puppet like" pretend to play a uke. Make a parody of a song you already know by heart. When I first started to play the uke I played a lot to the children in my daughter's school. So when I was working on a regular tune, like, say, Leroy Brown, I knew the kids would not be interested in that song so I just changed the words to make it more attractive to them and I didn't have to learn two songs. I've made quite a few of these and they are fun to do and you don't have to have permission to play them in public.

I really, really hope I haven't put a glitch in the Seasons. You must have a puppet and a parody. No songs with just "puppet" in the title or name of the band. Come on! I know you can do it!!

Well, I think this is the toughest theme since I joined the Seasons. The only two Seasons I've missed since then (S84) were

1) the week of the fall Folk Project Acoustic Weekend Getaway (an entire weekend away, starting early Friday, playing music and getting zero sleep), and
2) the MTV week, which required video editing.

So guess what ... this is the week of the spring Folk Project Acoustic Getaway ... and a theme that seems to require video editing or some other such razzle-dazzle that I simply do not have time to mess with or try to learn this week.

And yet, I am now One Who Does Not Miss Seasons, no matter what. So fear not, Miss Janet ... I am writing my parody, and I think I can manage something live and vaguely puppet-like sort of helping me play my uke. I sure hope it works, and meets with your approval. I'm not going to win any prizes (unless randomly drawn ones), but I will be making an entry.

If anyone's thinking of not entering, be sure to watch Rex's video and also Wim's ... because not only are they freakin' BRILLIANT ... and were done with impressive-looking results but quite simple means ... but they are about the theme and why you should do it. (Pa's was great too, and a creative use of available resources.)

So let's all get clever and do some parody puppetry.

Janet, Be patient with us. I will be doing an entry this week but at the moment my puppet is traveling to my house. Not sure how he is traveling but he is due to arrive on wed. I have written my parody. That was the easy part after reading how to go about it easily. Truly I thought it was going to be the hard part. When I work or shower I get light bulb moments. I had the dishwasher half full and had to stop to get my song down on paper. Everybody go scrub your kitchens, scrub your toilets, scrub the tub...maybe something will come to you. Get and old tube sock, give it two eyes, glue on a tongue, give it a yarn hairdo and your done.

ok

i am posting this incredibly lame vid, before i watch anyone else's efforts, and realise with full horror just how lame my vid is

yeah

when i first joined the seasons, i had no idea where it would all lead

but i can honestly say

i never expected it to lead here!!!!!!!!!!

this is "uke monkey"

ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

do you remember back in the day, oh oh oh
when you didn't have a ukulele, oh oh oh
you had to play a big old guitar
now you say a uke is better by far

remember struggling with six strings, oh oh oh
you really couldn't play a single thing, oh oh oh
and now you've got a uke, you just don't stop
i think you're gonna play 'til you go pop

uke monkey, uke monkey, give me your paw
give me something that i can remember
mano a mano with your tiny soprano, yeah

uke monkey, uke monkey, let's start a band
you can play uke while i do the singing
i know i'm no good but if you play really loud no one will hear me

i never ever thought that we
would sing and play ukulele
but we do, and i know that you love it so
so come on let's go

ah ah ah ah ah ah ah
ah ah ah ah ah ah ah

let's rock the uke all day long, oh oh oh
let's play a tune and sing a song, oh oh oh
i know you want to, and so do i
i'll sing real low, and you can play real high

uke monkey, uke monkey, give me your paw
give me something that i can remember
mano a mano with your tiny soprano, yeah

uke monkey, uke monkey, let's start a band
you can play uke while i do the singing
i know i'm no good but if you play really loud no one will hear me

Completely understand Janet, and sorry for bending the rules. Just wanted to get a video done here because I might struggle to do it properly this week. Having looked at a few other kids though it might be doable though, if I can borrow my girlfriend's laptop one evening.

On a plus side I've been meaning to adapt that song to uke for a while now, so thanks! New one to go in my open mic set, plus I got to play with the new effects on my phone's camera.

Janet your a hard taskmaster. Wendy (Ukecan1) has challenged me to write a parody so I've accepted. People really should be careful what they wish for. So here is a tongue in cheek parody effort set to the La Vie En Rose tune. I've tried to portray an emotional singing tone as my acting skills far outweigh my puppeteering skills as you will undoubtably observe. If only we could produce videos now and again that spontaneously combusted after one viewing. I would truly love this to be one such video. ;-)

Parodies are easy. They are easier than writing originals ... the tune is already done for you, the structure is done, and you can riff off the words and ideas and phrases that are already there to come up with fun alternatives and sound-alikes that fit your chosen theme. Super fun. Mine is written (finished this morning) and I can hardly contain myself until evening to record it, it is so much fun!

Linda, where did you read how to go about it easily? From Janet, or some other source? Do share with the rest of the class! It will help all of us.

I'm probably one of the most patient people you could know. So, I'm good. Just kind of worried that not many people have even said anything. I want everyone to get silly and have fun. Just like any other Season if one does not like the theme they do not have to participate. I got a nice email this morning from Ukuloonie and I'm going to post it. It's an older video but really fits the theme. We'll call it a bonus. If anyone else has anything they've done in the past you can post those too. Even if it's just a parody. (:

They are easier than writing originals ... the tune is already done for you, the structure is done, and you can riff off the words and ideas and phrases that are already there to come up with fun alternatives and sound-alikes that fit your chosen theme. Super fun. Mine is written (finished this morning) and I can hardly contain myself until evening to record it, it is so much fun!

Linda, where did you read how to go about it easily? From Janet, or some other source? Do share with the rest of the class! It will help all of us.

So after initial thoughts of 'oh god how am I going to manage to do this' I've given this theme some proper thought today and I've come up with something!
I now have the agonising wait for the rest of the afternoon before I can get home and actually record the thing. A reoccuring feeling for me since I started doing the Seasons. Anyone else suffer from this affliction? Is there an anagram for it?

Agonising Wait For Ukulele Loveliness
AWFUL

That's brilliant. I think AWFUL syndrome needs its own thread. Ryan, I think the antidote is bring a uke to work, so you don't have to wait so long!

I would truly love this to be one such video. ;-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El7o_ea9lKE

Aw, that was great, Dave! Janet issued the challenge - I just goaded you into stepping up. Thanks for doing it. Great parody.

Now I want to see Lumpy do a parody of "Puppet on a String". The song wasn't "voted off", Robin - you just have to write some new words and add a puppet.

I love how everyone's finding a way to make this challenge work for them. It's a tough one, but hopefully the videos we've seen so far are giving the rest of us ideas and inspiration to rise to it too. (My parody is ready ... have to make my puppets and get my webcam software working again ... I sure hope it's just a reboot it's needing....)

If anyone else has anything they've done in the past you can post those too. Even if it's just a parody. (:

Oh, I have plenty of parodies without puppets:

Parodies written by me:
"Let's Call the Uke Thing Off" (http://youtu.be/Ip6g0EzV6RU) ("Let's Call the Whole Thing Off")
"Money Money" (http://youtu.be/MLiGXsg4jEc) ("Sugar Sugar" by the Archies)
(and "New Jersey Love Song", parody of Slaid Cleaves' "Texas Love Song" - not yet recorded)

Parodies written by others:
"The Saga Begins" (http://youtu.be/jIW7RRd-EIU) ("American Pie") - Weird Al Yankovic, featuring friend Cecilia
"Mexican Hat Dance" (http://youtu.be/GLYuUfqNSuQ) - Allan Sherman
"Range Rover" (http://youtu.be/30vABrwvwV8) ("The Wild Rover") - Stuart Markus
"The Elements" (http://youtu.be/xRTbh60gYqA) ("Modern Major General") - Tom Lehrer
"Me" (http://youtu.be/PwNq6hHIFyA) ("Come Back to Sorrento") - Allan Sherman again
"Ham, Eggs, and Everywhere" (http://youtu.be/eR4YGsLWnpc) ("Here There and Everywhere") - Beatles, non-uke, with friend Kathy and "Mr. Strumstick" Bob McNally on guitar, lyrics by Dr. Seuss via Kathy

I think that's all of them. So far. Until tonight.

If anyone wants help writing parodies, I am happy to help! They are fun and easy. Ask someone else about puppets. :)

Once again, I got the season number wrong in my intro, both in English and Burmese. Borrowed this traditional Myanmar puppet from a co-worker. The parody is of Rhianna's hit (Under my) Umbrella, in which I talk about the beginning of the monsoon, which has definitely started here in this part of the world.

There was an odd moment mid-production when my landlord came knocking on the door. It wasn't about noise or anything; I had complained about a leak in the ceiling situated directly above my bed, and he had come to look at it. Neither my Burmese nor his English were sufficient to explain why I had draped a bright green cloth over two plastic chairs and had set up my camera to record a mannequin with a little ukulele taped to him...

Ah Brian, I was going to post the very same clip. I love Brian Connelly and his "it's a puppet" catchphrase. I was going to use his catchphrase at the end of my video but decided most would not understand or have heard of it so didn't bother. I used to watch his show every week on TV. His daft humour definitely appeals to me and I love the irony of this sketch. Classic stuff.

Oh my Rex, this is really good (: Only way it could have been better is if your little friend had eaten a fly! This was very entertaining and very puppet like even if there was no actual puppet. New age puppet I guess. So you see folks I really am loosey goosey ya know. The chair talking was funny as well. Frogs hold a special place in my heart ya know. I found a tree frog at my mother's friends home in the country when I was about 9 and I had him clear up until Jr. High school. His name was Freddy (of course) and he would lay his fat little body over my finger and just sit there waiting for me to rub the meal worm on his lips before he would open up and gobble it down.

Also had a tadpole from the Shenandoah here in Virginia who must have had something wrong with his genes because he never turned into a frog. Just lived with my fish for about 4 years before he finally, um, croaked. I've got another story about a pet frog, rather sad I'm afraid, but perhaps I'll tell it another time (: I'm off to bed. See y'all tomorrow!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwOxwwTWC_M&feature=youtu.be

Wendy, I googled how to write a parody.

WikiHow-
1. Choose a song and decide if it is the song you wish to parody. If it's a song you particularly dislike, it will be easier to parody, but if you want to record it for the internet, working with it may be a problem. It might be best parodying a song you dislike to begin with, and then move on to songs you like. Don't forget that it's easier if you use a short song with simple lyrics.

2. Pick a good song. Let's go with "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus. It's about a girl who wants to climb. This type of song, with a strange quality, will be very easy to parody.

3. Listen to the chorus. While listening, think of a topic for your song that can keep some words of the song in your new song. For example: Weird Al's parody "You're Pitiful" is a parody of James Blunt's "You're Beautiful", or his "White & Nerdy" is a parody of "Ridin' Dirty" by rapper Chamillionare.

4. Exaggerate that trait. Instead of having the man falling in love with the transvestite, make it that he shares a house with a bunch of transvestites.

5. Use the whole song to tell the story, making sure to add little jokes and jabs at other people. Use your madness and creativity to write the first verse. It is tricky on your part because you must keep the same amount of syllables in each line and use the same rhyme scheme, which is especially difficult in a well-written rap songs. Even Weird Al's parodies can't always keep up with that.

So my initial reluctance on this theme was that I'm housesitting for my dad for three weeks and I didn't think he'd have anything remotely puppet-like, hence my cheaty video the other day. I then saw, sat on a shelf in the living room, a PG Tips Monkey! I thought 'that's perfect!' So I spent the rest of the day thinking of songs I knew how to play that could be parodied and here it is. Roped Louise in to give the monkey a hand and she did far better than I did in one unrehearsed take. See if you can spot the two inconsistencies though.

Janet - something needs to be done about the false claims made in these Seasonistas entry introductions.

Clearly nothing lame about that clever up strumming primate.

And nothing lame about that beautiful duet of Doug's delightful song by that famous duo Ernie and Bert - and who knew Ernie was such a clever ventriloquist and could sing without moving his lips?

Funny. Entertaining. Delightfully trying to meet the host's requirements. YES.

OK - Just viewed Doug's video again and given that Bert has NO LEGS at ALL the claim of lameness could be justified.

Here's some more ideas off the top of my head to help you guys out. Get your kids, friends, lovers...dog? to help you out. You can use and oven mitt, egg carton, just your hand, a toilet paper roll, an old shoe (pull the sole away from the tip to make a mouth), paper bag, greeting card. I could go on and on. Just have fun with it. Easy songs to parody (a parody in my dictionary can be anything, not just poking fun at the song itself) are the short songs like Five Foot Two, You and I (Ingrid M), Fool Such As I (Hank Snow), Could I Have this Dance (Anne Murray), well, you get the idea (:

Not quite a parody.... But here are my old friends (32 years old and still going strong, if looking a little worse for wear) The Ruling Class, singing a song to the tune of "Little Maggie" for you.

These puppets were built for our old Theatre Company "The Magic Ox". They were sculpted by Tristan Jacobs and me.

Anyone else notice that Ernie's hands are in the perfect position to play a uke!

Yeah, my Ernie was a toy called "Rock 'em out" Ernie that came with a plastic guitar. It looked a little too heavy-metal style, so I cut it off. Ernie must not have been happy with that, because he didn't seem to want to cooperate with my jury-rigged puppetry.

Berni the puppeteer "The Ruling Class". The Power that be's, be is, is, that's here. Ack......The Power that's ME, says this is really funny. Great voices and clever way to have an a-Capella group of puppets. Must have brought back old memories. Great playing as usual (: That lad at the end looks like he's been through more than a few tousles! Thanks Berni. I knew you'd come up with something nice.

I had planned to print off tiny pictures of Ohana ukes for the Ruling Class, but my printer was out of CYAN and wouldn't allow me to print them off, even in B&W. So the guys went acapella.

Well Janet you've got my creative juices flowing (some may of course disagree) and Ive come up with my first ever original song. Go easy on me. I can't envisage any time in the future me having to play this again so it will no doubt be a "one off - never to be repeated song". I recommend you don't let any young people listen to this until you have vetted accordingly (adult humour). Once I got this little ditty into my head it just wouldn't stop until I'd recorded and finished it. So here it is. Oh and lyrics i'll put them below.

Ukey Dave,Dave, Dave, "Naked Puppet". You've got to give yourself more credit. Just why would you play this song only once. It's got a nice diddy that sticks in your head like glue, is imaginative and your first ever original. I'm so glad you were getting those juices flowing. Now, make a parody of your own song and make it about something else naked (or whatever) and you've got a song you can keep. I say, just keep it as is though. Very good singing and harmonizing etc. Very good Dave!!!!!

If I remember right, they're basically the same thing... but a pastiche usually exists to respectfully play on or celebrate the source material, while a parody either mocks it, or uses it for humor without that level of respect

So this is fun- Pa noted that I drew myself playing left handed. In reality I am left handed, and I air-uke left handed (yes, I air uke often)...I can even flip the darn thing and make most chords (not E- me and E are not friends), and of course, a left handed person would never notice that they had done that.
So Melissa then says "Puppets are left handed". She has told me this crazy theory of hers before, and I know that when Kermit plays the banjo he does it left-handed...but I thought it was poppycock.
Well, that always leads to her being right. Muppets are largely left handed because the puppets were worn on the right hand, and the left hand of the operator (who held the puppet above his head or in front of himself) operated the hands with their left.
Figured that was funny enough to share. Carry on now folks.

Yes, that's basically it. Just to expand a little; a parody can either mock the original song or can use the song to mock something else unconnected with the original song.

In other news I've been asked to play a set at a charity gig on Sunday. I started doing open mics all over Portsmouth at the start of last year, mainly guitar stuff, and not really getting much of a response. Only a few months ago I switched to the uke as my 'main' instrument and the increase in positive feedback from people as well as how happy I am with my sets has gone up exponentially. I put a lot of that down to the two months or so I've been doing the Seasons. It's forced me (in a good way) to really buckle down and play the uke for an hour or two every day, try songs and styles of music I wouldn't normally try, as well as tackle more complicated stuff that'd usually send me running, and I can already see a dramatic improvement in my playing since my first video.

So I want to thank anyone who's ever left me an encouraging comment on any of my vids, and to all of you who keep this going and make it the joyful experience that it is. I'd still be mainly thrashing out power chords on an Epiphone otherwise.

I have missed only two Seasons since I started at week 4 of uking, Season 84:
1) The week of the fall Folk Project Getaway (http://folkproject.org/festival/Festivals.shtml) - 3 full days of music making and no sleep, and
2) The MTV week, which required video editing.

And guess what this week is ... both! We're leaving at noon tomorrow for the spring Getaway, and well ... it seemed impossible to me to make a puppet video without some kind of editing together of puppets and song.

But I am now One Who Never Misses a Season, so ...
1) Starting the Getaway with a sleep deficit has never stopped me before, and
2) I was determined to find a way to make this blasted video with no editing ... and I have!

And somehow I've found a way to make a live, solo, one-take video, and, at the same time, to do something I'm pretty sure no Seasonista has yet attempted ... have a puppet (two puppets, in fact), actually play my ukulele.

Of course, it will probably not surprise you one bit to hear that figuring out a way to make two functional, recognizable hand puppets that could actually play a ukulele together ... and actually making those puppets ... took only about a thousand times longer than learning actual video editing would probably have taken me. (And I'd have been able to edit future videos too.) But once I have gotten hold of a challenge ... it must be done!

Contrastingly, the parody wrote itself pretty easily, and I did indeed make the video in one take, so those were the easy parts!

So, I present to you, without further ado, Hot Julie (right hand, strumming) and Weird Waldo (left hand, making chords), performing a song about Julie's attraction for guys like Waldo ... based on Julie Brown's "I Like 'Em Big and Stupid".

If you don't know the Julie Brown song, it's hilarious, and you may want to hear it first, here: http://youtu.be/vEU_5lVjRFQ
(Especially if you liked "Earth Girls Are Easy" (http://youtu.be/p-QKx5FdoHc) last week, also by Julie Brown.)

http://youtu.be/2e7X6zywusI

Oh, and Waldo is made from an ankle brace that was really helpful in healing my foot when I sprained it ... and may one day come in handy again. Julie is a glove I actually wear in the wintertime ... or did, before she got all sorts of stuff sewn (and taped) onto her. I have no idea whether it's even possible to ever wear this glove again. You can hear her skirt banging against the uke in the video ... that's how you can tell she's actually strumming. Like I alluded earlier, form vs. function was an interesting balancing act in birthing this odd duo!

Oh, and I should probably add, since some of you are thinkin' it ... this song is totally about these two puppets ... it's not based on anybody you know. FiL, I'm pretty sure, is five-foot-seven.

Let's see if it lets me do this properly:

Chords and lyrics:

I Like 'Em Small and Nerdy
lyrics by me, based on Julie Brown's "I Like 'Em Big and Stupid"

Intro: E7 A7 x4

E7 E7
When I need something to help me unwind
E7 B7
I find a five-foot-six baby with a one-track mind (“Prime directive!”)
E7 E7
Cool guys are nowhere, they’re in demand
E7 B7
Give me a joystick junkie with talented hands
E7 E7
I go to sci-fi conventions and they say, “Beam me up!”
E7 B7
I start shopping for a lost little pup

A7 E7
The weirder they come, the more they rock my world
A7 B7
A guy’s a lot of fun, when he’s never seen a girl

Chorus 1:
A7 E7 A7 E7
I like ‘em small and … nerdy … I like ‘em small and … real weird
A7 E7 E7 A7
I like ‘em small and … nerdy

E7 E7
What kinda guy parts the sea for me?
E7 B7
Poindexter with a PhD
E7 E7
My father works in hardware, my brother drives a truck
E7 B7
Well, the guy I took home last night, sure knows how to … debug my computer
E7 E7
The way he looked right through me, ooh, it really made me swoon
E7 B7
But the way he groped and fumbled, ooh, it shot me to the moon

A7 E7
The weirder they are, the more magic in the wand
A7 B7
Take me, nerd baby, to infinity and beyond!

Chorus 2:
A7 E7 A7 E7
I like ‘em small and … nerdy … I like ‘em small and … real weird
A7 E7 E7 A7 E7 A7 E7 A7 E7 A7
I like ‘em small and … nerdy

E7 E7
I met a guy, who dresses like Spock
E7 B7
He can’t tie his shoes, but he sure has a big … comic book collection
E7 E7
I asked his name, and he said, “Galacticus Sentiri”
E7 B7
Could I have found the unified field theory?
E7 E7
He’s so weird … you know what he said?
E7 B7
Well, I forgot what he said, ‘cause it was so … esoteric

A7 E7
The weirder they come, the more they rock my world
A7 B7
A guy’s a lot of fun, when he’s never seen a girl

Chorus 2:
A7 E7 A7 E7
I like ‘em small and … nerdy … I like ‘em small and … real weird
A7 E7 A7 E7
I like ‘em small and … nerdy … I like ‘em small and … real weird
A7 E7 E7 A7 E7 A7 E7 A7 E7 A7
I like ‘em small and … nerdy

E7 A7 E7 A7 E7
“Beam me up, Scotty … there’s no intelligent life at this party!”

Hiya, Seasonistas! I just wanted to let you know I had my lower wisdom teeth extracted last week and it did not go very well. Obviously I missed last week and it's not looking good for this week, which is a huge disappointment. Janet, you know how much I love both the puppets and the parodies! But it's day eleven and, well, I'm just not healing as quickly as expected. I'm heading back to the doctor in about an hour and hopefully this weekend I will see some marked improvement.

Janet, I'm so sorry to have to sit this one out! And I miss all of you!

Janet, oh, Janet! You saw Dave's and Rob's ... did you miss mine, in between (post 148 (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?96676-Season-118-Puppets-and-Parodies&p=1528164#post1528164))? I worked so hard on it! I mean, Hot Julie and Weird Waldo did, while I was asleep. Not that I'm impatient or anything, but .... I'm kinda proud of them and what they accomplished. I'm pretty sure no other puppets this Season have actually played the ukelele. Live, one take. Together!

But where is everybody?!

that was really great! i was wondering if the flying ptera might make a uke-ing appearance this week? can he play?

Ptera agrees with you, so I'm having to do something about it. It'll probably be a bit rough and ready, though as I'm a bit busy this weekend but I'll squeeze something in. Got the song written already but just off to choir practice just now.

I was hoping you would notice the Owl ;) This was time consuming, but I still like it more than multi-tracking. I would just rather have everyone over for a jam...playing all the parts and then sitting for hours weaving them together is no where near as much fun.
Dave, I'm going to quote you without your permission. So sue me. Dave "I hate multi tracking".
This seems so much more difficult to me than multi tracking and you did it beautifully. I'm going to ask you to illustrate all of my children's books. Love the owl.

Didn't think I'd know how to do this Janet, thanks for the opportunity.
I like to think of it as the Seasonista version of Subterranean Homesick Blues.

for those interested, here's the lyrics

If Not For Ukes

If not for Ukes
What would I do on a Sunday night?
What would make that evening bright?
I'd be putting up my dukes
If not for Ukes

Because of Ukes
I spend Monday in a dream
Finding a song to fit the theme
Avoiding a re- buke
Because of Ukes

Now days roll on,
Tuesday has gone
Haven't got my entry yet
Several running round my head
O-M-G I should be in bed

Now it's mid-week
Don't worry 'bout getting dressed
Gotta get that chart progressed
Well I haven't got a clue
This will have to do

I have finally got it done
You tube is slow, what a bum
Time to check what others have done
I see Pa was first again

Good to see things stay the same
Linda's on the ball again
BEV is letting entries flow
And Alan still is speaking low

Oh uku-lele
You'res dominating all my week
Barely time to take a leak
Wouldn't have it another way
Oh Uku- le- le

TCK, "The Puppet Final". This has got to be the most perfect song about the Seasons! It should be our anthem! Gosh I luv ya Dave. What an imagination and wow, you can draw! I mean, I mean, oh, I just don't know what to say....I JUST LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ukecan1 Wendy, "I Like 'em Small and Nerdy". What an ingenious way to make puppets play (hey that rhymed!) Anyway, I'm sorry!!! I did miss this somehow. Probably interrupted by the all the kids here in the afternoons. This is so great I don't know where to begin. YES! We finally have puppets actually playing the uke! Every verse of this parody has some line that is very funny. Your very good at parodies Wendy. Thank you Julie and Waldo you rocked my world (:

Your comment at the end about the song being about the puppets got me thinking about how when I write a song I wonder if people automatically think it's about my life or me. Most of the time it's not. Sometimes this stops me from writing a song because I don't want people to think it's me. Well, have a good time this weekend and..........love ya Wendy!

You just get yourself better Lily! Having those teeth out can be a real pain sometimes! I still have jaw problems because of my extraction and I was young at the time. Get well soon. We miss you too!

A lot say that about being a hard task master but really. I'd like to know. Those of you who have submitted was it really all that hard? Of course some of yours were very complicated but not all. I just hope (and I think you are) having fun. I'll accept any kind of puppet (I've seen some super awesome shadow making) but in my opening video I do state my favorite kind is one that can move it's mouth. You can get such expressions and feeling out of 'em. Even if your using a "naked puppet" (: So if your in it to win.....I'm just sayin'.

Here's my second effort. Hope it's OK. BEV wondered on You Tube if flying Ptera might feature. Well not exactly but I do have a small collection of dinosaur soft toys so I have used those and animated stills of them using my movie software. I cheated at one point as I don't have a diplodocus or triceratops so I used some clip art. I also left out icthyosaurus in the video. (pity as Whitby museum have a full skeleton of one on the wall).

I hope this is OK, Janet. If not I have something else I can do but I wanted to get it done tonight as I am busy tomorrow - I have a recorder concert.

The song itself is a pastiche of Ride a White Swan by T.Rex. (Who else for a dinosaur themed song )

Yes, that's basically it. Just to expand a little; a parody can either mock the original song or can use the song to mock something else unconnected with the original song.
thank you! i have learned about music, obviously, and maths, and now english, here on the seasons - what a great place it is!

I'd still be mainly thrashing out power chords on an Epiphone otherwise.

seasons is such a great place to learn stuff and be challenged musically..................... and have a larf of course!

mark that is so strange, just last night i was plinking in the kitchen, like i often do in those otherwise wasted seconds while the kettle is boiling for a cuppa! and the light from the hallway sent a shadow of the uke and my fretting hand onto one of the kitchen cupboards and i thought oooooooooooooooooh - someone could do shadow play for the season!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1xjHEFUarY

Someday....swinging through the trees
Happy chimpanzees
We will cease to be just silly monkeys
Evolution changed our life....

Haircuts....in our future now
No more sloping brow
Some will disavow this ever happened
Evolution changed our life

Rocketships and automobiles
Breaking Bad and HBO
Surf the web, see Disneyland
Brag about all we know.......

Changing....with opposing thumbs
We're no longer dumb
Happily we're numb to all the madness
Evolution changed our life

I love being a seasonista
I love learning new songs
Sometimes I'm on that website all day long

And I wish there were just a few more
Hours everyday
I'd pick up my ukulele and I would play all day hey hey

We'll I really want to play - my uke
And I want to post another video
And I'll share it with the other seasonistas
And if you like it you can

Leave me a friendly comment
And I'll leave one of my own
After I have seen your video

And each week I can't wait
To see what the new theme will be
I just feel bad for my family - cause I'm driving them crazy

Cause I really wanna play - my uke
And I want to post another video
And I'll share it with my fellow seasonistas
So right now I've gotta go....

good lord no Janet! These are Muppet Whatnots that u can get from toys r us. They are really cool. They come with several sets of eyes, noses and wigs and other fun stuff. You can buy extra clothes for them too. Me and Sam have had a lot of fun with them and I had some other good ideas for this season, but a busy week left me with no time. I would truly love this to be one such video. ;-)

good lord no Janet! Who knows...maybe we will use them in future seasons. This was a challenging but really fun theme!

Oh, I haven't been in a Toy's Russ for ages. I have a puppet from long ago that is the same principal but since I picked it up at a yard sale (he's so cute) he has no eyes or anything. I'm assuming that your puppets accessories just velcro on? Anytime someone does puppets with their uke I'm in heaven so I hope you do do something soon. This next week would be perfect with all the weird noises (:

Tootler, "Dinosaur Park". I like this one very much as I quite like dinosaurs. We have a whole bunch of plastic ones (some as big as a foot tall) that I just can't bare to re-home. You've got a nice set of dino's yourself. Nice singing and playing. Very nice pastiche! I'm going to put this in the bonus playlist as it does not actually have any moving animals (:

OK. I've redone the video. The recording for the song is the same but I was able to recruit my daughter to act as puppeteer. We had a bit of fund doing this. I've overlaid the animation of the dinosaurs on to the the original video. I still cheated on one verse as I didn't have soft toys for the necessary dinosaurs. We did have a diplodocus but we can't find it.

http://youtu.be/uyBxdOkijTk

I've left the original in place for the time being but I will take it down after the season has ended and add a link to the new one in the original post.

Edit to add: Please remove the original version from the bonus list and replace it with this one as a second entry as I think it now meets your criteria.

So, not only did I manage to participate in the hardest Season week ever, even though I was away for three days of it, making music all weekend and getting zero sleep at the Folk Project Acoustic Getaway (at which you all need to join us in October!) ... I did it twice!

I've recently written another parody song, and hadn't yet figured out quite how to video it ... and there were a few lines that might not work with a wider audience that I was trying to fix. I got a chance to play it a couple of times at the Getaway to large audiences who laughed in all the right places ... I even got a request for it!

Suddenly it struck me ... d'oh! ... it's parody week! With puppets! Which I already have! Who can play my ukulele!

I realized I now had the perfect performers for this song, and the perfect way to make the last few lines work. And time to get it done after I got home on Sunday.

Until, that is, FiL and I went on a one-hour hike at the end of the Getaway that turned into three hours when we lost the path and ended up having to bushwhack our way back out to the road. It was late when we got home, and we were both beat and battered. (And we're fine ... it was just a very long walk ... we had cell phones with maps, and were never in any real danger.)

So, alas, I think midnight in Hawaii has already tolled, and I am a bit late. Sure, this would work for S119 too ... but it's a parody song ... with puppets! I made two of them! In a week when I didn't realistically have time even for one. This really needs to be HERE. Sorry it's late.

You probably haven't heard the song it's a parody of ... Slaid Cleaves' wonderful, charming, funny, clever "Texas Love Song" (http://youtu.be/ckae30gYMlI?t=1m29s). And you should ... really ... your life will be enhanced by clicking that link right now. Plus, as with all parodies, your enjoyment of my song will be heightened by having heard the original song first. So please, please, please ... do yourself a favor ... go watch this FIRST: http://youtu.be/ckae30gYMlI?t=1m29s . It won't be the same if you hear it after mine.

So (now that you've watched that), here's Hot Julie and Weird Waldo, the uke-playing puppet couple ... along with a surprise guest at the end, performing my version of "Texas Love Song" (http://youtu.be/ckae30gYMlI?t=1m29s):

http://youtu.be/O0IjPYfJBvI

If you're paying attention, you'll notice Julie had a bit of wardrobe malfunction ... just when Waldo was singing about taking her dancing. But, seasoned (Seasoned) troupers that they are, they kept right on going.

Thanks so much, Janet - from me and Julie and Waldo! We had fun. Thanks for the challenge. And thanks for allowing our slightly late entry.

I do love writing parodies ... they are so much fun! Parodies was high on my list of potential future Seasons ideas. I'm so glad you did it ... so now I can do one of the others. :)

Your comment at the end about the song being about the puppets got me thinking about how when I write a song I wonder if people automatically think it's about my life or me. Most of the time it's not. Sometimes this stops me from writing a song because I don't want people to think it's me. Well, have a good time this weekend and..........love ya Wendy

Thanks, I had a wonderful weekend at the Folk Project Acoustic Getaway (http://folkproject.org/festival/Festivals.shtml). You all should think about joining us next time! (October - twice a year.) Whole lotta ukes there ... more each time.

I've had that same experience you mentioned ... I am often concerned about what people will think about the songs I write. I usually end up writing 'em anyway ... but one does wonder!

A lot say that about being a hard task master but really. I'd like to know. Those of you who have submitted was it really all that hard?

Um, yes. This was the hardest Season I've ever participated in. Totally worth it. And yes, it was a hard challenge. I can completely understand people with life and jobs and dissertations and families not spending the kind of time I did on it.

I think it's great to have a mix, of fun easy Seasons and big challenges. I was actually pretty happy for a light-participation week for once ... much easier to keep up ... especially when I was away for so much of it.

It's all good. You done great. Everyone who participated done great (amazing, actually!). And now, hopefully, the bar will stay lower for a while ... until someone comes up with something even more diabolical and awesome. All good.

Thank you so much Wendy, your a trooper! Maybe it's just me but I like some real challenge. Sometimes the week is kinda dull when it's practically play anything you want with just a couple of rules. I think S119 is just as hard if one really puts in a lot of fun noises. I'll be doing an original "I hope" (: I'll announce the winners by the end of the week.

Well, that was just the best prize draw video ever, I think! A puppet parody prize picking!

Well deserved winners and mentions - congrats to all! I think we are all winners, just for entering - though only a few of us will have the cool window cling to prove it. (That's true every week, but even more so this time ... it was a tough challenge and we DID it.)

Janet, I sure hope you will take pics or make a video of the window cling prizes before you send them on to their new homes.

I think for hosting health, you really showed us the way. Posing a challenge so steep that it only drew 36 entries might not have made everyone happy, but it sure made your job easier than the 100+ we've been getting lately! If you've found a way to keep us from killing off our hosts, at least some weeks ... I think there's some benefit to that.

Me, I'm pretty excited I now have live ukulele-playing hand puppets. Who will be trekking with me to Indiana next week for UWC! I will not make the mistake of leaving them behind again like I did last weekend. Julie and Waldo want to play! For people! (Now I just have to buy some new gloves for next winter.....)

Thanks for a super-fun challenge. It think the chorus of your song absolutely got it right. A good time was had by all who entered. I'm pretty sure.

Okay, so we looked up the "Stranger in Paradise" song, which I remember from the musical "Kismet", which my dad played in when I was young. Turns out it's based on a song by Borodin. So FiL and I are speculating it's popular songs based on classical music. Which our friend Dick Adcock did one of in the current Season, I noticed. That would be a cool theme!

Any other speculations, or should I be moving this to the SAS thread? (Yeah, probably. But it started here, so I'm responding for continuity.)
