Welcome to season 119. Crazy words, Crazy tune!

This season is all about lyrically silly, goofy, kooky fun and musical noises. The goal is to make each other happy, laugh out loud, or get a smile from ear to ear

I am leaving that interpretation up to you so you can let your humor show through. There are lots of clever lyrics out there that make a song humorous, but many of you can sing a sad song and make me laugh so just go for it and give me what you've got.

To help get you started with silly ideas think Spike Jones, Ray Stevens, Roger Miller, Leroy Troy, Jim Stafford, Kate Micucci.

Then there is the charming fun of the Johnny Marvin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCmywY6mjdE) songs . He was a ukulele player of the 20's who had his own way to add in kooky musical noises and I would love to see his songs added to the playlist. There is so much charm and humor in many of the old tunes.

* Big points for LOL moments and Johnny Marvin tunes:)

**Even bigger points for the use of musical extras!! Get your nose flutes out people:)
(kazoo, whistles, spoons, xylophones, nose flutes, poppers, jugs, tools, etc. use your imagination.)

Guidelines for entries
1. No videos posted before 12:01 am, Hawaii time, Sunday May 25
Season closes at 11:59:59 pm, Hawaii time, on Sunday, June 1

2. Ukulele front and center. Say it's for Season 119.

3. One official entry per person. Bonus's go nuts:) Let me know which one is your official vid!

4. Multitracking and creative videos are encouraged as long as you are in the video.

5. All videos must be recorded this week.

6. Multiple versions are most welcome. Dont worry about someone else getting to a song first. Do it anyway!

7. Collaboration's for an official entry please let me know who gets credit.

*8. When you post I would love for you to let me know what you've used for your musical extras that I call "props"!

Judging~

Judging will be based on your clever take of the song, use of musical extras (and an effort to costume would be nice). You know how I am. I think everything is great so I may have to rely on the top hat. If I CAN come up with an over all winner they will not be included in the hat. All other name will make it into the hat only once unless you do a Johnny Marvin song. That will get you into the hat twice.

Prizes~
First prize will get a Cigar Box Uke. Other winners will receive your choice of a uke related item from Zazzle (t-shirt, cup, etc.)

FYI- Here is a fantastic "Humorous Playlist" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no5YPK5iLwA&list=PL0486EFCC8788616C&index=1) full of great ideas. He has included words and chords to over 100 songs:)

First prize Winner~

La Palina acoustic/electric cigar box ukulele. It has a single piezo pickup with a volume control. The bridge is adjustable. The strings are acoustic guitar strings. I will ship her with the guitar strings as is and you can change them out to regular uke string if you want. The tuners are open gear. The neck is red oak with a red oak fretboard. The frets are low and narrow. I picked her up from a local cigar box uke maker.

it's an awfully good job we aren't bothered by such things, i often forget entirely that a new theme is due 'til ooh maybe wednesday morning, when i might yawn and suddenly realise there is that ukulele underground seasons thingy, and maybe, in my own time, nice and slow, swing by and see what the new theme is...

Still working on my puppet... Got turned around after planning blues monster and got caught up when a totally different idea was born. Now this!

I'm now eying the violin case and ready to go search my furnace room to see if I still have my uncles old saw. As a child the musical saw was something that fascinated me. I get so lost in the research hours of old music on youtube is now in store.

Breezin' Along With the Breeze was a big hit for Johnny Marvin in 1926 apparently.
Not many props Linda - just a kazoo and a slide whistle - and at the end the breeze (just me).

I'm hoping this fits the theme, I got to this song by looking for fun songs with google, which was what the host said we should ;). I've used the picture Max made of me last season, I did clean it up a bit after copying it from his video.

pabrizzer- Awe freedom! The perfect Johnny Marvin song for you. I loved the simple use of your props to help tell your story. Thats the way to start this off. I don't know how you come up with this stuff so fast!*

xommen- Well That was fun Wim and thats what its about. Thankfully after 35 HS does end. I don't care who's best dressed or having sex:) Social pressures no fun but the song was. Nice use of props too!*

Here is my offical entry for the week, there is no extra sound effects just me and the uke. But this is a fun song and from a bygone era of "Music Hall " or Vaudeville" across the pond. RAB11 Oh Ryan this had me giggling throughout. Stay away from the cougar and its not fair to Stacy. Besides when your 30 she'll be 50 and she's a tease and well...No, its just wrong! Nice playing and I loved the cartooning. I loved how you sang that with so much conviction:) I believe that you believe!

MikeOnTheUke Mike, you are right! This is a mouthful of pleasure and I love it. How you pulled off those tongue twisting lyrics was just brilliant. I loved your enthusiasm for the song too. Pulled me right in. Nice playing, singing and way to bring it like a ninja :)

Jazzbanjorex Great use of that looper rex. Loved the props. Very creative stuff but I want to laugh and I don't find it funny that you can barely breath. Get yourself well...that would put a smile on my face :) Thanks for joining in!

Many Thanks for the kind words Linda and thanks for hosting this fab week.
Right here is bonus #1 I hope this song is not offensive it is purely innuendo and down to ones interpretation of the words, if this is deemed risky i will willingly take it down :o

This is another old English song written by Harry Roy (I've got a Harry theme going on so far  ) this is a song about a pet.

Thanks Mrs Slocombe ;^)

The cotton from the prairie cottonwood trees is flying in my back yard this weekend.

Eek-A-Mouse is a Jamaican reggae artist.
He took his name from a racehorse he repeatedly bet on and lost, the one time he didn't bet, it won.

This was his 1983 record that introduced me to his unique reggae vocal scatting stylee.

GarageBand multi-track w / live vocal
No kazoos, duck calls, sirens or slide whistles were employed in this recording

Pabrizzer - Clever, funny and sad all wrapped up in a Pa package ;-) Loved that harp intro and the meow had me rolling. Have no regrets Pa. He will get over it! At least he made the choir!

UkeyDave- Naked knees always crack me up. Some real fine picking Dave. A fun up tempo one take and a lyrically snappy catchy tune that ended up a hit for Miller and on the charts. Thanks for bringing this one! We rednecks always find you gents across the pond worthy of imitation:)

Harry122- I wondered if anyone would turn to the boy scout songs. Great songs to be found there by the Hooser Hotshots. They are a great find for this fun stuff and they too entertain with fun musical props. Otto Zilch was a very brave soul to travel so far in his undies. I wonder if he ever had to use his spare? He should of taken some granny panties. They surely would've fit:)

~Dave~~Wave~That is a great group of noise making instruments. You don't need all the extras with your genius fingers. A Dave~~Wave show in the neighborhood :) I always love what you bring. Such great flavor!

bird's eye view of my ukelele- That was great. I was a little worried at first of over consumption at the sake of the song but you handle yourself very well drunk! Very good use of incorporating the theme to the crazy sounds of beer....and I do mean the bottles. How did you tune your egg slicer? We all want to know! Thanks Lynda for that very crazy clever entry:)

Well, of course, the words to my entry are not crazy at all –– just misunderstood.

It is called "Passengers Refrain", a song from waaaay back… I don't remember NOT knowing it. The story goes that Wm. O. Douglas, later of the US Supreme court, & an environmentalist a long time ago, was inspired by a sign he saw on a train trip about flushing, ( trains & planes simply dumped the waste while moving)

The tune is well known, & part of a series called Humoresque written by Antonin Dvorak, the Czech composer.

Enjoy, but please do not flush.

http://youtu.be/dzJZqispakE

Passengers Refrain

Passengers will please refrain

From flushing toilets while the train

Is in the station, darling, I love you.

We encourage constipation

While the train is in the station

Moonlight always makes me think of you

If you wish pass some water

Simply call the Pullman porter

He'll place a vessel in the vestibule

If the porter isn't here,
Try the platform in the rear,
The front one's more than likely to be full.

If the women's room is taken
Do not feel the least forsaken
Never show a sign of sad defeat

Try the men's room cross the hall
And if some man has had the call,
He will kindly offer you his seat.

If all these efforts are in vain,
Simply break a window pane.
This common method's used by very few.

Let's go strolling through the park,

Goosing statues in the dark

If Sherman's horse can take it, why can't you.?

Here is my entry Linda. This week sees me celebrating being around for a 100 of seasons. I have contributed with 148 videos (give or take) within those 100 weeks and have had some great laughs along the way.
This one took me much longer than I suspected as it is multi-tracked and the synching and technical bits took me much longer than I thought they would.
On seeing your theme there was one song that sprung immediately to mind. It is a cult football song in England and released for the 1998 World Cup and as we are approaching the 2014 World Cup next month in Brazil thought this one would be an ideal entry for me. It isnt for the musical purists, that’s for sure.
The original never fails to make me both laugh and I always find myself singing along. Check out the original by Fat Les here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaBdajHOsSM)
I just love it, sorry but I just can’t help myself. The musical purests will probably despise me for it but I don’t give a fig. For me, its both lyrically ridiculous whilst being genius at the same time. Its a song/video that never fails to put a smile on my face and just forces me every single time to sing along.
I thought it was about time I got the toy drum kit used for the seasons too. ;-)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1tkx88tF10
And here are the ridiculous lyrics.

Where on earth are you from?
We're from England
Where you come from?
Do you put the kettle on?

Kick it

(Na na na)
(Na na na)
(Na na na na na na na na)
(Na na na) Bonjour

To a lump of cheddar cheese?
Knit one, pearl one, drop one, curl one

Na na na (na na) Na na na (na na)

okay, here's my vid, haven't checked the thread yet today so i'm hoping no one beat me to it! hey ho if they did...

this is "beer" by snap-her

played on doug's number 11 superuke, with...

beer can percussion

beer bottle percussion

beer bottles as wind instruments

plus bonus egg slice at the end - admittedly not a beer-related instrument but hey, it's re-entrant! :D

Enjoy, but please do not flush.

i had in mind to use a packet of crisps, shaken (not stirred) for percussion...

but i'm more a real ale kinda gal, so i went with the beer song

Right, Louise was up at half three this morning so she went to bed ridiculously early and I was just killing time before I went and joined her. Then it occured to me that we've had a glaring omission so far, so I got the lyrics up on my tablet and played whatever occurred to me for about five minutes it turns out. Please also note the seamless waking-up of the tablet to get the second verse.

This bears no similarity to the original other than the lyrics but I sure had fun with it.

I thought I'd add this George Formby song. I remember it from the 60s when it was a B side song for Clinton Ford (the A side was Dandy, popularized by Herman's Hermits, and written by Ray Davies - according to wiki...)
I used a plastic yellow kazoo borrowed from a mate, with his son's harmonica holder, and some sort of tambourine/cymbal thingy in a stick, which I gaffer taped to the upper leg of my trousers, and banged on a book called "The Golden Age", by Geoffrey Searle. (You trivia people may want to know all of this info if this video goes viral). The book gets 2-1/2 stars for a good read, and only 2 stars as a tambourine/cymbal whacking device.

CharlotteC- Cha, I love this song. I need to learn this one. When I was a little girl we had an English Bull dog. She too wagged her butt all day and guess what we named her...Cha Cha! Did you know there is a dance named the cha cha. Tell Pa to do it for you. Now here is another story you'll love. I have an Australian Shepard and she is a butt wagger. Every time I look in her direction she goes into that same funny happy dance. Thanks for singing this. Lovely playing and singing and smiling. I always have to use a cheat sheet to get through my songs but I wish I could do it without. Im so glad you made an entry. I love your stuff Big smiles!!!

wee_ginga_yin- These songs are made for you Rob. Great song to wake up to with loads of smiles from me. Nice clever song very well played and sung with you charming Wee grin. Thanks for bringing it!

Dickadcock- Ok that left me with loads of questions. Are you a bathroom attendant at a train depo? Are you sitting on the tracks and need to be seen? Why does that bari need safety lights? How'd you get that train to come be just at the right moment? Was that a "love song"? How clever are you!? That was a fantastic use of musical noise to add to the flavor of that song Dick. I really enjoyed that!

UkeyDave- Uh Oh, I feel a competitive uprising coming on! I loved that you finally used that drum set we've all been looking at for so long! Great playing, great enthusiasm for your ball team. Great march...thanks for not doing it in your skivvies Nicely done Dave and thanks for sharing this with us Americans. I can see how this would make the crowd go nuts. Nothing like a good nose rubbing to put a smile on your face!

CeeJay- Ok that had me laughing out loud...especially when the needle got stuck....I was reaching in to bop you along and POW there it was! You have some hypnotic strums that I wish I could pull off. Now squeeze out that rag and play some Scott Joplin piano rag

ChrisDeston821- That was really entertaining guys. I'll bet Krabbers won't mind at all! I had to watch it a couple times to soak it all in. Great song choice to apply some genius props. I was a little concerned that Jessica was going to take a chunk out of that hat but the skillful razorist that she is was able to avoid it. I really loved the props playing at the end. Big thumbs up for the bottle blowing at the end. You should try a whole song of that accompanied by the Uke!! How about 99 bottles of beer!

‪Penguinofsorts- I love the movie so I wont be throwing anything at you...and I love your rendition! Thanks for taking time to add to our silly songs. Disney has some of the best sillies out there! You have a great knack for pulling in the viewer. I hope we see you around the corner sooner rather than later!

RAB11- Something about this cracks me up! I think... that was me entertaining my grandkids...No...there is more than one of us that does this kind of thing! We are both brilliant That was fabulously funny. I kept waiting for Louise to walk in on you and wonder what she's gotten herself into. hahahaha Ping!

Barbablanca - Well I don't know what Disney was thinking! Very snappy tune had me singing along with the chorus's Berni. Your writing always impresses me...even at the expense of the cat you come up with the best stuff. Well, I guess thats cat debatable!

Jazzbanjorex- Did I see you on SNL back in 75 doing this bit. That was funny Rex. Sounds like your still sick but not sick enough to stay away so....I will except this as an entry cuz its gooood! Perfect leg percussions and hand strumming and mouth blowing and soul singing and silliness gooooood

Rustyy- That was really fantastic Rusty. I could tell that the words were enough to think about but yet you pulled off a one man uptempo show! Great song choice and I do think they like you...especially with all that book banging cymbal tapping kazoo blowing coordination. Thats a talent they all want in a man! Way to pull that off!

“Vocalese is a style or musical genre of jazz singing wherein words are sung to melodies that were originally part of an all-instrumental composition or improvisation.” — Wikipedia.

Annie Ross became one of the leading artists of the genre. Her most famous vocalese song is “Twisted”, set to a saxophone solo by Wardell Gray.

Not my best performance, but that's part of trying something new and learning how to do it along the way. Specifically, I'm working on working in melody along with the chords. Still need to work on this some more.

No extra instruments, but I am singing both bass and baritone, and using the uke to play both ukulele and mandolin, so that counts for something at least—perhaps, for example, it counts as "ill-advised."

Seasonista's, I hope your not struggling with this and that your having as much fun with this as I am. One of the best things we (ME) can do for ourselves is to loosen up. Some of you do that naturally and others not so easily. My watercolor teacher used to say I needed to have a couple of beers before I painted to loosen up. Haha she Knew I didn't drink but there is so much truth to being able to loosen up. These silly songs help us not take this all so seriously and makes for a better delivery. (I only wish I could take my own advice and apply it) A bit of goofing off is great practice! So thats my reasoning behind this silly season and Im having a good time watching!

Birdseyeview- That had to be the hardest song you've ever memorized! Its a good thing your brilliant. Love watching your dancing fingers. Today I pretended like it was a tarantula dance:) Are you loving number 11?

pabrizzer- Im so glad we've grown out of budgie's, cockatoo's and love birds! What we do for our kids. Boy can I relate! Nice funny little number done very well. I love your style of play and your harp work is always great.

Dougf- Really fun song about me! How flattering is that:) This is great Doug. You found one perfect for your style. No one plays a jazz tune like you. Very impressive the way you slide all over the fret board. Thanks Doug for joining in.

wee_ginga_yin- I loved everything about that. It was a great story with loads of humor and the sound effects were so smart. This had me laughing throughout and several re-watches:) Nicely done Rob!

Dwitt- Im with Fred. I wasn't expecting that and the whole rest of the song kept me laughing. I think this is about as loose as Ive seen you and I liked it a lot. Great song choice. I need to learn that melody/chord act myself...impressive. Very well done. BTW can I have that Ohana when your dead? :)

I had all sorts of ideas for this season but then I remembered I had a newsletter to do and the mailing list to update. That took up most of the first part of this week, so I have gone for simple just me uke and kazoo. Here is a song from Flanders and Swann. They subtitled it "A tale of unending domestic upheaval". :wallbash:

This is kind of a hard Season for me. I mean, I do silly songs almost every week. You might think that would make it easy ... it's kind of my wheelhouse ... but, if I do them every week, however do I pick one for this week? ... I could do anything! It's a bit like if the Season was "do anything you like" week for the rest of you ... that would be hard, right?!

So, I went for the very silliest song I could think of ... I have always loved this one. And I learned some stuff this week:

1) This is the most requested song ever in the history of the Dr. Demento show
2) The rather bizarre 1979 video (http://youtu.be/cTpUVAcvWfU) for it was named by MTV as one of its top 100 videos of all time
3) Said video was conceived and directed by a pre-famous Bill Paxton
4) "Art Barnes" of Barnes & Barnes, the duo who created the song, is Bill Mumy, Will Robinson of "Lost in Space" ("Artie Barnes" is his childhood friend, Robert Haimer)
5) He is quite an excellent musician, of "regular" music, though this one unexpected hit appears to have provided most of his post-TV income

So, here ya go. The original aforementioned video may be viewed here. (http://youtu.be/cTpUVAcvWfU) The actual song starts at 2:15, if you are impatient.
(In the original. In mine, it starts pretty much right away. Not like me, I know, but what can one possibly say about "Fish Heads"?)
Except to be sure to listen closely, so you don't miss the profundity of the lyrics. I forgot to say that in the video.

http://youtu.be/FjloYmvOmQA

Oh, I did say "Season 119" at the start of my video, but for some reason, the webcam wasn't recording yet. First time that's happened.
This was my first take. A second is unlikely to improve anything, so I present it as is, with the usual screw-ups intact.

UkeCan1
05-29-2014, 10:21 AM
Haha, I did have more to say about "Fish Heads"!
(It's about the chords ... surprise! :))

This is a deceptively simple-sounding repetitive 4-chord (most charts say 3) song.
But figuring out what those chords actually are was harder than I expected.

I was quite surprised to find:

1) There are only a very small number of covers of this song - I only found 5 or 6.
(As near as I can tell. There are a lot of videos based on the original song, and few of them are labeled as such. So if some covers are also not labeled as such, I may well have missed them, because it's impossible to tell which is which without watching every single one.)

2) Chord charts exist, but they all sound very wrong.
(Most say: E-B E-B E-B F#-B)

3) The cover videos all sound wrong too. The chords sound wrong, and they are wrong in a way that makes it impossible to sing the correct melody to those chords. Hence, I could not locate one single cover video with even an accurate melody, let alone accurate chords.

The guy who played it on his bicycle (http://www.guitarforums.com/showthread.php?t=25273) (yes, he did), I think had the correct chords mostly figured out, according to a post he made about it here (http://www.guitarforums.com/showthread.php?t=25273). But his video (http://youtu.be/6qYxHFtePpQ) sounds wrong too ... probably because he still had one chord wrong ... and it's 3/8 of the song.
(He said: Emaj7 - B Emaj7 - B Emaj7 - B F#9 - B)

I think I have finally made a cover with accurate chords. I think the first three B chords should also be major 7th chords.
(In other words: Emaj7 - Bmaj7 Emaj7 - Bmaj7 Emaj7 - Bmaj7 F#9 - B)

If anyone can stand to listen to both my version and the original enough to tell (and can hear past the places where my fingers didn't actually land correctly on said chords), I'd sure love to hear if you think I got it right.

These are not easy chords to play!
I tried raising it up a half-step from B to C, which worked great when I was trying out the wrong chords - E-B-F# becomes F-C-G. Fmaj7 is a bear.
I tried doing them all as bar chords: 4446, 4666, 6867, 8676. That just hurt!
Then I surrendered to the capo. I play capo 4, (Cmaj7 - Gmaj7) x3 + D9 - G
I tried still playing the G as 8676, so the last two chords were still bar chords.
Finally, I surrendered all the way and just played the regular G shape.
So only one bar chord. Which is still hard to play accurately. Sorry about that. :)
(I mean for messing up that D9 a few times on the video. Not because I think you are all going to rush out and play "Fish Heads".)

For the record, I love major 7 chords. I find them a deeply satisfying sound. So no wonder I've always loved this song! If I'm right, it's 3/4 major 7th chords! I bet you can't think of any other songs for which that's true.

Also, this is not an easy song to sing! Barnes and Barnes did the chorus "chipmunk-style" ... they recorded it at half-speed and sped it up, raising the pitch an octave. I just sang it up there. Which makes it quite a range-y song.

Also, I really miss the funky harmonies on the chorus ... they are really the thing that gives the song its signature sound, I think (whatever you may think about that sound. :) ).
Anybody want to add some harmonies to "Fish Heads"? With or without chipmunk technique. Because that would be awesome.

Chart available to anyone what wants one.

Right so Linda wants people to be silly and loosen up this week. I apologise for my interpretation of this request, Louise wasn't impressed with my desecration of Mary Poppins the other night when she watched the video. Didn't think she would be anyway.

So tonight I'm watching Wigan v Huddersfield in t'rugby (I was born in Wigan you see) and decided to just go ahead and record a song I'd been meaning to do all week. Unfortunately I've not got means of multitracking any odd instruments at the moment so I'm having to make do with mouth trumpet and drumming on my uke. And in the case of this song, improv-ing (poorly) a final verse in response to Wigan scoring a try (we were winning 12-0 when I uploaded, 18-12 Huddersfield now).

So with my apologies to The Divine Comedy, this is The National Express.

Wendy,
I love that you've taken the time to work this all out for yourself. That what makes for a really great player. You definitely have much more knowledge than I do when it comes to chording. I have taken the time to play along with the original. I think I have a pretty good ear. I had no trouble singing the melody along with the original E B and F#. Sounded spot on to me. I also took the time to play it your way and would say that it also sounds like a different right. You must have a 7th ear:) They both sound fine to me. Its one of those songs that is so off it needs an off sound and thats probably why every cover version you listened to sounded off...if that makes any sense at all. AND thats just my logical ear speaking.

Yes, where the heck is Paul?! I miss him too. He'd have had the exact answer to which chords are correct. And a whole bunch of deeper info and insights beyond what I asked ... and never would have thought to ask.

Linda, are you familiar with the original, or is it new to you? I too tried playing those major chords along with the original at first, and to my ear they just didn't match. AND I found I couldn't sing the correct melody to them. The Barnes and Barnes piano sure sounds to me like it's playing something more complicated than majors, and when I played my chords to it, they sounded a lot closer of a match to me.

I do definitely have a 7th head! (and 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, augmenteds, and all manner of other funky jazzy stuff). So, definitely possible it could just be me! Though I have played plenty of 3- and 4-chord major songs, and they sound just fine to me ... if not as interesting as the jazz songs.

By the way, kudos to you for listening to and playing through that much "Fish Heads"! Its kind of an annoying song, unless you have an inexplicable soft spot in your '80's heart for it, like I do. But then, you are the Warden of Wacky Week, so maybe you love that crazy tooon as much as I do. Thanks so much for going the extra mile, Linda! That's quite amazing, actually.

You are getting more and more comfortable with every season and I love that. This had me giggling along. Thanks Liz, what a great entry!

Tootler- This is great. I am loving all these novelty songs. Thanks Geoff for making an entry with your busy schedule. This had me laughing. Haven't we all been there?

UkeCan1- This is truly one of those ear worm songs and the kookiest one I think you've done so far. Thanks Wendy for participating and adding to the silliness of the season:)

RAB11- Ryan I can't believe you could pull yourself away from the ball game long enough to post. I had to go watch the original to understand the song is about a kook and not just a kooky song. It would be nice to view life as a fresh aired train ride. I think I might try that. Thanks for sharing. BTW I love your mary poppins slaughter! haha

Wendy,

I listened to your version of Fish Heads (good job, btw) and I thought "I remember that". I then went to the original and I definitely remembered it.

Anyway back to the point. The accompaniment on their original was simple but effective and used dissonant harmonies so that it sounded slightly "off" which was clearly what they were after given the crazy subject matter of the song. The guy on the bike had pretty well captured it though you could hear on occasions he was just using a basic chord so the dissonance disappeared briefly - probably on a B but I did not investigate further.

If you learn the tune then try singing it and adding basic triads, (E, F#, B) it will harmonise fine (as long as you get the chord changes in the right places, of course). It should always be possible to do that if you have the basic harmonies. You were singing along with the recording and I suspect you wanted to add those extended chords because that's what you were hearing on the recording. I suspect Linda (and I'm sure she'll correct me if I'm wrong) was just singing it on her own and adding in the chords so that the melody harmonised fine with the basic triads.

The extended chords add "spice" to the harmonies and can give an arrangement it's character. In fact it's one way you can make a song your own and differentiate it from other versions by varying the chords somewhat - as long as they fit. So the chord charts that give just E, F# and B as the chords are not actually wrong but they do not capture the character of the song. To do that you need those major 7ths and in fact, you are probably right, you need to include Bmaj7 as well though perhaps the final chord could be left as a straight B.

wee-ginga-yin- Great but its a bonus worthy song. You always make me laugh:) Added!

Frisbee Fred- This is hilariously funny. Loved it! Loved the loose silly good time fun your having with it too. Didn't miss the kazoo at all. Its amazing how many unlisted videos were getting this season. Shame!

Markwo- Oh this season just keeps getting better and better and I loved this.. I kept thinking whats he going to do next and then that surprise ending had me laughing out loud. Now this is my kind of Season! Goofy old songs. Multiple instruments and multi-tracking encouraged. When this week was announced, I thought I'd might like to do something special.

First thing I needed was a unique instrument to accompany my uke. I was kinda hoping for the Burmese equivalent of a kazoo, but my local music store had nothing like that. Way back in a corner, they did have some traditional Burmese small drums. I got one for $2.

I could have multi-tracked, but when my friend Anthony asked me to go with him into downtown Yangon on an errand (because it's a hassle to go downtown, made more pleasant when you have a friend to go with you), I said okay, provided you also help me with something...

I didn't need to multi-track. I got someone to help me.

Benny Bell's 1947 fun tune.... covered famously by Dr Demento in 1981.

Don't know how silly this is supposed to be., But here is a fairly silly story in song with a nonsense chorus and at least one very silly instrument - the Saxo-Flute (http://tinyurl.com/pmuc8kt) (an amazing kid's toy that's half instrument and half construction kit). It also features a Xalameau (http://www.sansluthier.net/ca/productes/xalumeau-sans-ametller.html) (the daddy of the clarinet) and would have featured a kazoo and a swannee whistle - had I been able to find them. The Saxo-Flute is played by changing the embouchure in your mouth to vary the tone. It's weird and slightly wonderful / annoying ;)

This song was one of my "light-relief" songs back in the dark days of the Cold War when most of my semi-pro Folk Singer repertory consisted of anti-war songs and doom laden pieces about how we were all going to die in a Nuclear War / Meltdown and I'd never see 30 ;).

If you like comic folk tales, you'll like this one. (It's not traditional, it is an original of mine from 1980 - and at 5 mins, fairly long). Anyway, here is "Two Witches from Nottingham" for your pleasure.

Great song choice! One of my favorite reggae artists. So many of eek's songs would have worked. Well played too. I am impressed that even your headphones match!

In any event- the Mento tune is a Hubert Porter song called "Names of Funny Places". Well...it seems like it's been months since I've contributed to the Seasons...oh, that's because it has been months! Hard to believe the "six weeks" is in it's third year now!

Well, I wrote this parody to use at UWC this year but I'm not going to get to go this year. Then I noticed this week's theme and figured, "eh, why not?"

The audio isn't the best - used the built in mic in the web cam and my voice drove it into clipping in a couple of spots...sorry 'bout that!

Ok here's my official entry. Sorry no special effects unless you count the mystery backup singers. Here's "The Man Song" from Bob & Tom. I have no idea when this was originally recorded. I have one more I hope to record this week depending on how many "To Do's" the Boss gives me tomorrow. :biglaugh:

Yes the Johnny Marvin Playlist has been very lonely. Its too bad because he did some great songs and he's worth learning.
i really wanted to a johnny marvin song - but is it just me? and i think it very well might be just me, but i thought i'd put it out there, just in case it isn't just me, and someone can say "no it's ok, it's me too" and make me feel a bit better about this - but those old songs (and it was true for tin pan alley week too) have about eight and a half million chords in them, and they aren't just A and G and D and maybe C and F and cheat's E ie. the chords i can DO - they are all sorts of super fiddly chords, diminished this that and the other and goodness knows what

do you guys just man up and learn them all?

or wot?

yours sincerely

Lynda, You underestimate your geniusness.

I have to admit that the hardest song Ive played to date was "Oh how she could play the Ukulele" by Johnny Marvin BUT not because of the chords( and you are much more skilled than me). The song was all over the place! I know I made it look so eeeeasy ;) but that song was a bugger and a half. I almost pulled my hair out. I even made a blooper reel of how frustrating that song was so I'll excuse you...this time:D

Now go....run...get started on your classical:)

Well that was a flop. But I guess I needed it to kick me in the ass.

I really suck bad, like a garage band that cut their first demo and realized how bad they sound. I haven't sang since I was in jr highschool... 30+ years I was a tenor I think I'm a crackling bass now lol.

I was trying for a passable version of rubber biscuit or minnie the moocher, heck I'd do manna manna if I could pull it off.

I'm not mad or discouraged well a little I guess is normal I so enjoy watching all of you preform and I have always loved music.

My mustangs sick she needs a new fuel pump so I strapped my pineapple flea and my 20's 30's Harmony to the front of my 87 Magna and brought them to my shop. Thinking it would be quiet there after ten... my artist ended up tattooing till 12am. There I was armed with a saw I have messed around with as a percussive instrument. I haven't made the bow yet or bought a proper saw you know the cars sick riding a bike thing. I had a ruler, four bottles tuned to various notes, small maracas, two pieces of a really pretty wood someone gave me cutoffs from their knife handles to clack... I was going to film various sounds and put it together in post. Playing the F's and B flats on the ukulele.

Then I tried singing for the first time in quite awhile. Rubber Biscuit is out of the question. Even my nose trumpet and mouth brass are way out of tune. Thank you all for doing this it is pushing me and the ideas are definitely creative. I have to dedicate this week to fixing the Stang and drawing a custom bio sleeve for a friends son for Friday.

Have fun with the classical.

thesillydave- Wow, such great chording and playing on this. You are really a great uker. You always find such great songs and your delivery is always so funny that I wondered what you might bring. Funny story and fantastic playing. You can't ask for more than that. Thanks Dave!

bonesigh- This is a fantastically funny song and I love suck ups:) I loved the funny use of props and I really loved the 20's feel to the whole thing Janet. Good job on this. Made my funny bone happy. I think I even heard him laughing. Hahaha

OldePhart- I hate to admit it but this is my kind of sense of humor. LOL big time....Did I follow you down a grocery store isle once? Bwhahahahaha. You have a beautiful voice and I loved the simplistic pick/strum pattern you used.It worked great on the Uke. I feel honored that my season got you posting cuz this is hilarious! Sorry the UWC missed this one. There loss, my gain. I loved it.

librainian- This is hilariously true. If momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy. I had to have several listens to this clever song. Great delivery Andrew. I even think you might have been a little afraid the wife might hear you singing that song. hahaha. Your playing is always so great and I love what you always find to share. I loved the back up singers and the drums too. Thanks for this one. Ill make sure my husband learns it! snicker snicker snicker

Lumpy Wafflesquirt- Your son almost stole the show but I'm giving it to the raspberry chorus:) Loved that you aren't taking yourself seriously at all and your so relaxed about son touching things and taking his spot on the camera. NICE roughy here. Thanks Lumps, I likey.

GaryC1968- That was the dopest trip. Im so glad Wendy guilted you into joining in because your right. You are pretty fly for a white guy. Nice chunking along and I hope your UWC trip is great. Im sure your theme song will be playing in your head the whole time your there:) Thanks Gary!

Myrnaukulele- Myrna this is beautifully done. His stuff isn't easy...at least not for me but Wow I loved that. I wish more would have tried him out but hey Ive got two of the best here. Not a crazy song but definately crazy good:) Thank you for doing him!

Missed me doing Shaving Cream Linda, no big deal, I got another one for you.
This one comes with a serving suggestion, because I looked for my umbrella all week and never found it. Can't really buy one when it is the biggest drought on record for the state and 90 degrees...soooooo, go watch Rihanna doing "Umbrella", and then imagine the right half of this video filled with me doing the dance.
I did that once for the talent show try-outs at school. It brought the house down.
In any event- this song really is absurd.
Me doing this song is silly.
The crazy plan regretfully did not happen. Great Season.

I know I am new here, but from what I have seen, there are a lot more songs shared than just in the Seasons. Ukers are definitely Not lazy, but a " Lazy Fair" (yes, a take-off on the French) might be really useful for those songs people just can seem to squeeze into a category aligning with a season. (Special threads have been made to accommodate many of them, so the songs are being learned, written, etc. -- so why not a maverick season)

... & making the special season known to inactive seasonistas who might want to come back to show what they'be been up to!

I think you have a great idea, & something should be made of it.

There is a very special place for just what your suggesting Dick and its my other favorite place here in UU land. Maybe you've not stumbled upon it yet. Its called "Links and Vids (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/forumdisplay.php?6-Links-and-Videos)". Go check it out if you haven't found it yet cuz you will find some really really great musicians over there. Many of us visit there regularly:)

Also check out pabrizzer's "Bari me please" thread. He is running a thread right now with all baritone ukes through June 15th and that stuff is great over there too. Look for it here (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?96848-Bari-me-please!).

That's a pretty cool idea! A "leftovers" Season. For those great songs you've been wanting to do, but the right Season theme hasn't presented itself yet. Or that you started for an earlier Season but never finished ... or wanted to do but didn't find time for. I am accumulating a long list of those!

And, if you're a newbie and only know one song, you could just do that one. I was extremely fortunate to have such a Season for my first entry ... Lily's "Put Your Best Foot Forward" Seasons. Well, my "best foot forward" was the one song I knew. Thank you, Lily!

Markwo- Kid approved! I love getting the kids involved. Does he have a uke yet? Fabulous song but don't feel bad...they make us all cry. I loved the relaxed feel of this and the great little part your son played. I gotta tell you I think he may have stole the show. I had to watch twice cuz I realized the first time I couldn't take my eyes off him. Very nice guys. Thanks for sharing:)

Bonesigh- OMG This is so well done. I love it. What a great original. I loved the use of all the instruments. This was very well thought out Janet. I have found myself singing it. You know that means its good when you can't get it out of your head. The only thing that could have made this better would have been for you to make an appearance with the nose flute:)

Bunnyflower- I loved this Bunny. Such a fun happy song. First of all can I say fantastic location and secondly I looooove you! Your vocals are just beautiful, your playing fantastic and your bubbly enthusiasm was what made this so great for me. Yes I smiled through the whole thing and I loved the ending. I hope to see more coming from you down the road. You belong here:)

myrnaukulele- Well this made my day Myrna. I looooved this. The competition is getting thick. I love the old tunes and you put all the goodies in at just the right moment. Hi all,

Just a note to remind everyone that it's time to sign up to host future Seasons again---whee! I'm signing up hosts through the end of 2014---that'll take us up to the 150th (!) Season.

Before choosing a Season, be sure to read recent posts (from #103 on) in the sign up thread (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?82618-Sign-up-for-future-Seasons-II/page11) carefully to avoid selecting a Season that another Seasonista has already chosen. I'll update the thread each evening. If you've hosted recently, please give those that haven't had a chance to host recently a couple days to sign up before you do so.

If anyone has any questions, please ask in the sign-up thread (http://forum.ukuleleunderground.com/showthread.php?82618-Sign-up-for-future-Seasons-II/page11). Now, back to the silliness at hand...

Hey, everybody - Cecilia's back! This is our Season 120 contribution, because it's a popular song based on a classical piece ... but it's also hilarious ... as you might expect, if you've seen any of my other videos with my wild friend Cecilia. And I know she wouldn't want to miss this crazy Season too, 'cause she's like that ... so here we are, appearing in two places at once.

I picked the song that cracked me up the most over the past few years. Without its ridiculous video, the song loses some of its special stupidity, but here's my mellow uke version of LMFAO's second biggest hit...

Sorry, my video didn't get uploaded correctly---my new laptop sent the unedited file (rather than the edited file) to youtube, so I've unfortunately shared a rather disgusting burp. Well, okay ... now that Luis has done this one, and TCK did it earlier (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG0G5213Gfs) ... and Peewee quite brilliantly in Season 117 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEZxSxIAs50) ... we appear to be having a little pigeon-poisoning party over at the Seasonista Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/Seasonistas/permalink/495317230598218/). To which, of course, you all are invited. Of course, you are also most welcomed to participate here. Both places, if you wish. If someone shares a chart of the song, hopefully they'll provide a pointer to all, to save some time.

But what the heck, we still have over eight hours to go. Some come poison some pigeons with us.

Well, I've been MIA for the last couple of weeks -- working hard for the money. Summer Shakespeare time, which means being on the road away from home for a 12 week gig. Lots of packing and ducks to get in a row, plus a ton of work to do now that I'm here (I'm in all three plays in rotating rep, with quite a line load...)

I had something worked up for Max but couldn't get it recorded, and there was no way for me to put the time required for Janet's in last week, but this one is in my wheelhouse, so I carved out a couple of hours to rehearse and record this little gem from 1918.

http://youtu.be/hTlZF9s5dgY

(For the first time in over two years I got the season number wrong in the intro. That's what I get for stepping away for a couple of weeks. But it's good to be back!)

In case one "Fish Heads" (http://youtu.be/cTpUVAcvWfU?t=2m15s) wasn't enough for you, I also made a parody version ... all about ... well, YOU!

I think I may have set the record for the most Seasonistas named in one song - I think I counted 70.

Here's the deal ... if you're not in there, it's not personal ... I had to stop eventually or I would never have got the song done! But if you make a comment on the YouTube video (http://youtu.be/rxWnriZNHhQ), I will write you your very own verse. When I have enough new verses, I will video those too. So, go see if you are in there. If you're an active Seasonista, or have been recently, you probably are. Or possibly not. It doesn't mean anything either way ... okay?!

http://youtu.be/rxWnriZNHhQ

Oh ... if you are not familiar with "Fish Heads" (http://youtu.be/cTpUVAcvWfU?t=2m15s), you may want to see the very wacky original (http://youtu.be/cTpUVAcvWfU?t=2m15s) first. And possibly my cover of it from earlier this week (http://youtu.be/FjloYmvOmQA).
Otherwise you may well be left scratching your head. Well, that might happen anyway.

Oh ... and I spared you the octave-up chipmunk chorus in this one. I sang the whole thing in my "pretty-voice". Which makes it more monotonous, but (hopefully) less annoying.

Greyghost1964- Thanks for joining in Luis. This is great. I loved the maraca and the charm in your delivery. Very nicely done. I love this song.

Bonesigh- OMG Everything I said before plus now this is really hysterical. I started laughing from the get go. I guess I do know what Im talking about cuz that had me rolling. Thanks Janet. I wish you had done a Johnny Marvin tune for me:)

Ukecan1 and Cecilia- Before I saw the other comments I was going to be very clever and say this is a great warm up song. Darn it! Crazy fun. Cecilia has quite the range:) Thanks for sharing this.

mattydee- Matt this is so good. I think it may be my fav of what I've seen of you. I remember singing this as a kid. Your chording is so so good. The mouth trumpet is fantastic but when you started in on the Johnny Marvin greatness it went over the top good. I am so glad you shared this one. I love the old tunes. This is perfect. Tried editing in youtube, but it's taking hours to process. The unedited video's public now, but it's not as polite as I like. Please excuse me for any gaseous offense.

I think I'm a few minutes past midnight Hawaii time, but no mind ... this is just a silly bonus, on a dare, from TCK (Dave) (http://youtu.be/uG0G5213Gfs) and GreyGhost (Luis) (http://youtu.be/cz_XXBXwwyY), who both did this song earlier. (As did Peewee (Peter) (http://youtu.be/oEZxSxIAs50), for S17.) One of my favorite songs of all time, so how could I refuse to join the pigeon-poisoning party?

http://youtu.be/t3A4HkwIAx8

The late-night party / dare took place on our Seasonista Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/groups/Seasonistas), so do come join in the general merriment over there....

[Well, so much for this Season being hard for me ... I have posted 4 contributions to it, which I'm pretty sure is a new record for me. I guess it's in my wheelhouse after all.....]

I loved it.

Thanks, I'm glad somebody shares my slightly warped sense of humor. My grown daughter was mortified that I posted that on YouTube. She texted her mother, "Did you see what dad posted, it's about passing gas!"

My wife replied, "Yeah...I've been hearing him around the house for a couple of weeks now." I think she meant hearing me practice the song...

First off let me say thank you to all that participated in my kooky season. I had a great time listening to every clever thing you did. There are so many of you that I didn’t mention but that doesn’t diminish your awesomeness. Judging you was the hard part of this process. I had to stop myself from making a comment about how great you all are and narrow it down to how I came up with 6 top contenders mostly from the laugh-o-meter.

Over all Awesomeness
Librainian- The Man Song. Such a funny song. Your playing and singing is always impressive.

DaveWave- Smuggling. Wow! Everything from the matching outfit to the song and playing. Fantastic!

Mattydee- JaDa. Loved the way you delivered this song with the mouth trumpet sounds. Really top notch performance.

Overall Funniness Factor
wee_ginga_yin- My father is a Dustman. This just came off perfect with the faster speed. Very funny!

RAB11 – Soup Her Callie (Bonus) OMG I laugh every time I watch this. This reminds me of a late night goof off session when nobodies watching. Something I would do:)

Frisbee Fred- Oreo Cookie Blues. Very funny song and delivery. I love watching people's funny side and I don’t think you can fake that.

OldePhart- Blue Eyes Cryin In My Wind. This song is a scream. You have a winner hit here. This one cracks me up every time I listen to it too.

Bonesigh- Good Ol Jack Again. You really went the extra mile with all the instruments and some very funny lyrics. This was done so well but adding in the funny characters with the nose flute made me really laugh out loud. Such a great job on this!

theonlyukethatmatters- Sexy and I know it. You had me at buuurp! What a way to start a song about being sexy. I loved it...wish you wouldn't have edited that out:)

Made it to both lists with Awesomeness
Pabrizzer- Bill the Cat, The Budgie Song, He Wags His Butt (with Cha) & Breezin Along With The Breeze. Bill the cat with that meow and then the budgie song that got Bill where he is. What a funny couple of songs. I love all the songs you do with Cha, and then the Johnny Marvin tune that was so perfectly done with the great sound effects that helped tell a story. All of them perfectly done!

myrnaukulele- He broke My Heart In Three Places, and Thinking Of You Thinking Of Me. You really have such a lovely voice and your playing is great. Two songs that were just perfect for you.

Spirit of the Season with great use of musical novelty instruments
bonesigh- Ukulele Linda & Good o'l Jack Again. You really went the extra mile to deliver exactly what I wanted. I loved both songs and all the instruments you used. You really have a talent for parodies and humorous lyrics. Laugh factor on the meter was way way up there.

myrnaukulele- He Broke My Heart In Three Places & Thinking Of You Thinking Of Me. You also went the extra mile to deliver just what I wanted. I loved all the fun instruments you used. You have a charm about you that is tops. Then you learned a Johnny Marvin song for me. I find his songs really fun and I loved how you just breezed through the chording of the song so effortlessly. Fantastic, both songs!

I chose 6 people out of all the categories to roll the dice for a winner. These people are all deserving of the prize but it would be useless if I chopped it into 6 pieces. This was really hard for me. How can you possibly choose a winner from a list of such fun stuff. Thanks to everyone that joined in on this goofy week. I really wanted everyone to have a fun time and loosen up and I think lots of people seemed to become much more relatable and charming. That was the best part of the season for me. Thank you all!

Whoah!! That's amazing and exciting! I can't wait to record something special for you on this great prize Linda. Thanks for a super season. I'll PM you my particulars. Pa, I'll try some Seasick Steve on it - that seems appropriate!

There were so many hilarious and creative entries this week. I am always so impressed by the amount of uke power you all bring week after week. I just want to shout out to DaveWave who had my favorite video this week. I just loved the energy, the song, the costume and the overall performance. I loved it. Janet, you had so many fabulous pastiche and original entries I can't believe it. I'm really impressed with your creativity.

Thanks again!

This season was a blast thanks to all the wonderful and talented people we have and thanks to Linda's great hosting! I liked the "blow on the dice" part of the final vid (: Congratulations to Andrew, yeah, let's hear some tunes. I bet claw hammer would sound great on the cigar! Congrat's also to Myrna, Lynda and DWitt!

Thank you for all the praise of my video's. You all are the best!!

This sure was a fun Season! Kinda what I do every week, but so excellent to have all the rest of you bring your wacky sides out to play with us silly "regulars". Even I had to amp up the absurdity factor to keep up with you all.

Congratulations to DWitt, Myrna, and BEVOMU. Be sure to come back later and show off whatever you've won! And of course big slightly envious woot-woots to Andrew ... can't wait to see what you do with that adorable cigar box.

OldPhart ... don't your wife and daughter know you have a fascination with "wind"? ... I mean ... it's in your name and all.

Chris the Barber, welcome to the Seasons, and thanks for taking up my challenge to UWC-6-attending Seasons virgins! You are my hero for jumping in so fast and so brilliantly.

I know of at least one more new Seasonista-to-be planning to join in the fun over at S120 so she too can be part of our upcoming epic Seasonista jam on stage at the UWC on Saturday. We have the perfect Season 120 song picked out, thanks to FiL, and there are 17 UWC-attending Seasonistas on our little Facebook group where we are planning it ... if they all participate, I'm guessing this will be some kind of Seasons record.

(Someone posted a "What Kind of Camper Are You?" quiz from REI on the UWC Facebook group. Guess what kind I am? Ring Leader! (I didn't even know that was a type of camper.)

Anyway, I digress (you wouldn't know it was me, otherwise, right?).

Thanks, Linda for a fabulous fun time, and congrats to everyone who participated. We are all winners!

Fun season and wrapped up quickly - thank you Linda.

And Andrew - yes I do expect some Seasick Steve type songs from that uke - something to look forward to.

Congrats to you al, but especially to Andrew. I'm sure that Uke is going to inspire you to some whacky stuff to remind you where it came from!

And a big thank you to Linda for hosting!

Now I pray I get a moment to contribute to the classical gas that's happening over on Geoff's latest Season. Got something planned to do with my daughter. But it will only come off if her exams and my translation permit it :(

Has anyone done anything from the Two Ronnies version of Bizet's "Carmen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYpxp4Y-fAA)" yet? That's a classic! ;)

Great fun - thank you Linda. I can't believe I made the cut for the dice throw - that's as good as a win in my book! Oh...and I sort of blew on the dice...

Congrats to Andrew especially and to the other winners and, of course, to all who let their hair down for the wacky ride!
