Season 121
OUCH!

I dropped something big and heavy on my big toe and it hurt like hell.
Bled for a week and I'm gonna lose the toe nail.
Did I mention it hurt!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90PuIBuRvg4

Your song must have a word indicating PAIN in the TITLE.
This can include ache hurt pain sore etc you get the idea.
The word could also be one that will cause pain like cut hit punch etc
But the word must be in the title of the song and be pain inducing.
Original songs are fine and encouraged.

Don't want no heartbreak but I know that won't stop some of you from going there.

Most will know all the regular rules but I will edit and post them here directly.
You can start posting now.

I prefer the song to be as it comes ie just you and your uke au natura...... no Dave Wave I don't want to see you sans clothing again.
No multi tracking and electrickery please.
As many entries as you like.

Prize will be a small first aid kit.
I think I'll just pick the video I like best.
Or maybe top ten and then those 10 go in a hat ... we'll see.

It all ends next Sunday midnight Hawaii time.

OUCH! Playlist. (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWWTvJrk8iLzxnnm5roZ0fINRpDRqSR3a)

Well done for stepping in Brian. Hope your toe gets better soon.

Interesting theme, I'm sure there are plenty of songs out there. Just need to find something.

Meantime, assuming it's OK with Brian, is it possible to edit the thread title to include "Season 121" in it?

Cheers

Now back to listening to recent Season 120 entries

Oops!
I tried to edit but it didn't let me.
Obviously someone more important will need to do it.

Speaking of (eye)pain. (Only joking Dave)
This is what I got in season 46 from Dave Wave when I last used those French words.

I once tried unsuccessfully to edit a thread title that I had started. Try a PM to a mod. I don't know if Jon is properly back on line yet. Alternatively, I'm sure Seeso or Rayan would oblige.

Cheers

This was the second song I thought of when I finally found the new theme. I might still do the first one I thought of, but that takes some more preperation. So I will start you all off with with Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, although I think Johnny Cash made this song more famous, they wrote it.

This season is going to be a pain.
You only hurt the Seasonistas you love.
Stop it, you're killing me.

Was it an anvil that you dropped on your toe, Pa? That's always worth some comedic points. Bowling balls a little less points but since they don't make steel toed bowling shoes it still worth some comedic value.

Thanks for kicking off the season Wim.
This is a favourite song of mine and I was wondering how you would treat it.
I like what you have done with the simple down strum and subdued singing. Well done.

Trip Through Your Wires and I Fall Down from U2 would fit the theme Wim.
So would Beat on the Brat but I think you did that one for Ramones week?

Heart Ache is fine but I do want to avoid Heart Break - in the title anyway.
Emotional pain is fine too as long as the correct words are in the title.
So Falling Down is fine but Falling in or out of love is not.

There is actually a song called "OWEE" so those kind of words in the title are fine too.
BTW if you like really short songs it's a little doozy.

This is a cover inspired by the version of Bryan Adams' MTV Unplugged album. My mum and I went on a road trip together a few weeks ago and I just had to put it on. Still knew it all the way through.

Thanks for bringing some Bryan Adams Rab.

For the record any song longer than 3 mins is testing my powers of concentration and endurance.

I was idly looking through the thread this morning and I realised I needed a song that

a) Met the seasons criteria
b) involved physical rather than emotional pain
c) was short. Ideally <2mins.

So the idea for a song came to me and I wrote this. (It actually involves both physical and emotional pain)

Lyrics on You Tube.

Was pretty funny too and I'm glad it is purely fictional.

The first time I heard this song was a cover Jon had done for the seasons. Then I heard Dave do it. Or maybe it was the other way around, I can't remember. Anyway, I loved both their versions, then I saw the movie and loved that too. Thought I'd give it a shot.
Thanks for taking the reigns this week Brian.

What a week so far. This is a very appropriate theme for my house this week. I left town to go to one daughters and the next day got a phone call that the 2 year g-daughter that lives in my home fell and was in the hospital with a fractured skull. She was released the next day and right back in that night for a flu bug she probably picked up while there. A second MRI, an IV and then she was released to come home:) This may be the only song I get in this week but I didn't want to miss it. I haven't even had time to really check things out here so I hope it hasn't been done yet!

Well, I finally manged to pull myself away from the UWC Facebook page for long enough to video the song I chose on Sunday while reading the theme and everything else we'd missed to FiL in the car as he drove us home to New Jersey from Indiana.

(Yes, he drove the entire 12 hours, and most of the outbound trip as well ... he prefers it that way. I'm not complaining. I did my best to make up for it by feeding him, changing the CD's, and doing stuff like reading Seasons threads out loud.)

Anyway, I see Luis (GreyGhost) has already beaten me to this one, but I was going to ask him and TCK to join me in it anyway, since they did me the same favor a week ago with "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park". If there are any other Tom Lehrer fans out there, I hope you too will join our little pain party.

I'm not a big fan of focusing on the negative, unless it's funny ... and this is the ouchiest song I could think of anyway.

This and "The Sick Note" (aka "Why Paddy's Not at Work Today"), which I hope someone will do.

So here's Tom Lehrer's "The Masochism Tango":

http://youtu.be/bfgqSlJuQn8

I'm not sure what that noise was at 1:45 ... the same thing happened in an earlier take.

PS, if you want to see what all the fuss is about, you'll see plenty of familiar faces in photos and video at the UWC Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/236184839465/) ... from which you too may never emerge ... start planning your trip and saving your pennies for next year, because you DO want to be there ... you know you do!

I tried to organize a Season 120 video with all the 20+ Seasonistas who were there ... it almost happened too ... but that is a tale for another time and place....

Drivelling intro. I'd been checking the seasons while having a coffee in bed before getting up and saw the little discussion between John "Olde Phart" and Pabrizzer about my second entry, so I checked back on the rules as laid out by Pa and realised what I had planned for no. 3 did not fit his rules. While getting dressed, I was wondering what to do instead when this one popped into my head. "That's it" thought me so here it is: Some early Elvis. According to Wicked Pedia (Which is, of course, always right ), the last song he recorded before going into the army.

This was made for some electric uke but that's been banned for this week as well. :stop: Oh well, acoustic it is.

All that drivel was while the song uploaded.

Dave, the week is young.

Someone said some such thing to me late one recent Saturday night, and I made it work ... at 5 the next morning. There are no acceptable excuses ... especially when you are asked on Wednesday. Do it!

You're right. No excuses. I am in this club.

Here is an original for this season, somehow it got longer then I intended (sorry Brian). If you want to play along I'm just messing with D7 and E7 so do that ;). Lyrics on youtube. This called: It’s no blues, If you don’t feel the pain.

Here is a more sensible [slightly] offering than the other bit of nonsense which people seem to like.
Mr. Tootler suggested this on over on the Facebook group. When I found the chords for the Willie Nelson version it said it was in 3/4 time so that's how I played it, but I think I have normally heard it in 4/4 time so that's how I played it.

You always hurt the one you love. ...No I didn't do the Spike Jones version, I don't think I could do it live.

Hi All, I have been really busy these last weeks, and so have spared you my usual drivel, but had to jump in on this theme! So happy to see the Masochism Tango going on, that was an early contender for me, but this one reflects my recent experience as a first-time home buyer in Southern California more accurately: Rape Me (http://youtu.be/n8aJG1f815Q) by Nirvana.

Arguably, some of what Nirvana did is aging poorly, but hearing this song for the first time as their encore, right before Nevermind came out, remains one of my favorite musical memories.
I wipe out a little in the outro, but hey, one take for Pa'! and it's a short one too.

On a totally unrelated matter - we have dogs again - we agreed to take on the neighbours 2 mini poodles - Max and Missie (Missie is old and doesn't see too well). The neighbors have sold and are moving into a retirement unit where the dogs weren't allowed - how OUCH is that! First night - so it will be interesting to see how they settle. All a bit sad really. Hope they settle in well. Better than the puppy thing we figured but we'll see.

When I saw this week's theme I knew the time had come to write a song that has been gestating in me for nearly ten years, ever since my father was slowly and painfully murdered in a hospital by people who claimed they cared. These professionals put my father through the kind of death suffered by the inmates in Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp.... and all thanks to a twisted morality I can neither fathom nor forgive.

Here is "Morphine for the Pain" in memory of a decent man who deserved better from society. :(

So now we have a tango club. Thanks Dave!

We are actually the Tom Lehrer club. We all did "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" 1.5 weeks ago.

Peewee is the president of our club, so we now await his rendition of "The Masochism Tango".

We are not an exclusive club. We enthusiastically welcome new members.

If you don't like our club, the Tom Lehrer ouevre is mercifully small. So we will surely burn ourselves out in a few more months.

At least until we move on to Allan Sherman and Weird Al. Though that might be a different club.

Oh gosh, I should totally do "Poison Ivy". I am just getting over mine from our lost-in-the-woods bushwhack of 2.5 weeks ago.

Some Really Useful Things I learned this go-round:
- Poison ivy is not contagious and does not spread. It just takes a week or two for the rash to finish showing up where you got the oil on you.
- There is not a blessed thing you can do to stop it. (Unless you wash it off within seconds of exposure.)
- It will go away on its own if you just ignore it. So you might as well ignore it.
- Unless the itch bothers you, in which case, treat the itch.
- The oil does get on any clothes and bedding you were wearing at the time or used close to exposure and can reinfect you or others. So wash 'em.
- (You can also get it from petting pets who get into it. Someone told me this last night.)

Thankfully, mine was not that itchy, so I just ignored it and now it is nearly gone.

Knowing these things saved me a ton of time, expense, and worry that I wasted on past exposures. So, maybe it will help someone else.

The nice thing about this song is that it seems easy to alter or reinterpret, even to put in new lyrics, as a lot of covers use their own... but it needs something extra, like you gave it, picking. Cool.

Right, as I mentioned in response to Peewee's version, I fancied this one earlier in the week but wasn't sure how it would go down. So thank you Peewee, for going for it, and also for giving me an excuse to break out the Bad Monkey for the first time in what seems like ages.

I'm also playing through a bit of pain here. Those I have on Facebook (Just Wendy and Chris actually) will know that the left side of my face is swollen as a result of an infection due to the toothache I mentioned in Personal Injury Blues. So singing's a struggle. Or talking. Or swallowing. Or generally using any of the muscles in my face.

What a struggle to get something recorded this week. I've been very busy and haven't had a chance to check out any other entries yet. However, I had to do something. This is quite a simple song, because I find difficult difficult.
In 1932 Jimmy Rodgers recorded "Whippin' That Old T.B." about a carefree attitude when it comes to consumption (T.B.).
This song was a reply written in 1939 by Ernest Tubb, "The T.B. is Whipping Me".

This is a totally different version from the one I recorded yesterday (it's also longer, sorry Brian). I think this one give more emphasis on the message, which is to hold on. But I guess that when your down and need to hear the message, you might be more in the mood for the subdued version, so there probably is a place for both versions. I had to do this one, since it's named for an ouch-y thing I've actually been recovering from, ever since we went hiking in the woods three weeks ago, got lost, and had to bushwhack our way out, turning our pleasant 1-hour sunset walk into nearly three.

I could see the tell-tale three-leafed plants all around, as I followed intrepid explorer FiL, bravely whacking his way through the increasingly gnarly bush toward the road that we could see on our phone maps was tantalizingly nearby. He was fully clothed (I was in my summer uniform of shorts, tank top, and flip-flops), so I didn't say anything.

I knew there was nothing I could do to prevent the inevitable outbreak ... and no better safer way we should be going. Our focus needed to be on getting out before dark, and I personally was more concerned in the moment with keeping the pricker bushes from shredding my legs and tearing my clothes.

Happily, my attack has been mild - no more itchy than an occasional mild mosquito bite - and not itchy at all most of the time. And I learned that there is really nothing you can do to make it go away any faster, and nothing to worry about (it does not in fact spread once you've showered and washed your clothes and stuff). So poison ivy can be safely ignored and it will eventually go away on its own. I'm almost there.

Do learn to identify it and avoid it when you can.
And when you can't, as in my case, relax and have patience, treat the itch if you need to, and get on with your life.
As with all things, it does get better.

what the H e double L L is Poison Ivy ? / Poison Oak ?.........do we have it in the UK (or possibly what may or not eventually be what is left of the UK).......is it nettles ....in which case a good rub with a dock leaf is usually the relief .......what is it........

From the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poison_ivy), it seems you don't have it over there ... it's a North American thing only. I had no idea it was unique to us until you asked ... who knew?! Everybody here knows poison ivy, and most have had it at one time or another (unless they're not susceptible) - it's so common. Lucky you!

It's definitely not nettles ... we have those two. I used to drink the tea for allergies, and it was great ... and gave some leaves to my elderly cat when she was ailing. Good stuff, nettles. You would not want to ingest poison ivy!

I had to do this one, since it's named for an ouch-y thing I've actually been recovering from, ever since we went hiking in the woods three weeks ago, got lost, and had to bushwhack our way out, turning our pleasant 1-hour sunset walk into nearly three.

Really like your singing and playing on this Wendy.
Glad we don't have poison ivy here.

I had hoped for a female version of this lovely song and you've done it well.
But given there was a specific request for no multi-tracking may have been better shipped off to the island.

Firstly, crash land, that's pain right? (: recorded early this week but YTs been acting up.

And this song was a real pain. I'd ran through it so many times, tryna make the lyrics a bit more pitchy rather than as monotone, more sung than rapped, but went back to a version truer to the original purely because my lungs couldn't cut it. Still not 100% happy with this but it'll be my official entry I reckons.

Tough song, tried it a lot, in a lot of different ways, and it's getting there but not quite there. That said - had a lotta fun doing this song. Will come back to it, and probably do a few others from the album too. Excellent lyricist and he's a guy who gives 121% performance live - highly recommend.

Okay, here is my entry...I think it qualifies...still not 100% clear on the rules this week...might be the medication. If time permits I've got a bonus I want to record tomorrow but consider this my "official entry." (Wow, two out of the last three weeks, maybe I'm "back" - we'll see. LOL )

BTW, I took a few liberties with the lyrics and the viewpoint of this song. It ain't quite how Sonny wrote it nor how he or Cher recorded it but it's close and I like this interpretation/viewpoint (anger vs. wistfulness) better...call me strange that way...

Only "trickery" was using a decent microphone and separate audio recording, then synching it up in place of the built in camera audio. No processing, though.

Oh...and this uke is LOUD! I had the off-camera microphone about midway between my vocal hole and the uke and anyone who knows me knows my voice is loud...and still this BP 5-string came close to drowning it out! Going to have to experiment with mic placement if I'm going to keep this up.

Rode M3 microphone about 2' away, straight through Audiobox USB interface to laptop.

Hi Pals,

My Son Matt put a song for this Season on the Island of Misfit Seasonistas because he thought it didn't exactly fit the rubrics here. Since it's been added to the playlist here by someone else would you mind taking a look over there, too?
Thanks!

It occurred to me yesterday that I hadn't seen anyone do "King of Pain" yet. I could sorta, kinda, nearly play it back in the '80s. So I gave it a shot today. This abortive attempt was as close as I got before I lost ability to hit the high notes. On the plus side, that kept it under Brian's 3-minute threshold.

This is a very quick one take learned on the fly with about 5 minutes of practice. I've been gone most of the week and just got back this evening. It's 11PM here (still light out though - our sun doesn't set till after midnight these days). Just enough time to post a quick vid for this Season. I'm offline a lot during the summer so I haven't watched many of this week's vids. I flipped through the playlist though and it looks like folks came up with some great songs. I had a lot of trouble thinking of a song to do. But when I saw Doug covered I Get a Kick Out of You I figured Stompin' at the Savoy would work as well.

Nice job Myrna. I wish I could learn songs in five minutes! Re. the midnight sun - I lived in Iceland for three years. I remember my first weekend there. I was in a club shooting darts until they closed and when they ran us off and I walked outside it was still "daylight". I thought, "man they sure close the clubs early!" It was 2AM... :)

OK Here's the wrap up for 121.

Firstly thank you for all the terrific videos and for doing some thing for this season.
I enjoyed them all.

I do have a short list of songs I really enjoyed

Bang Bang Laurie and Shea
Doug F I Get a Kick
Stickin in my Eye Markwo
It Hurts Me Too Sam & Mark
Rape me PW
Morphine for the Pain Berni
Hurt the one you love / I shot the sheriff WGY
Rusty TB is Whipping Me
SillyDave It Won’t Hurt
DaveWave Memory pain
Matty Dee Everybody Hurts
Logophile It only hurts when I cry
Portly Knight Hurt
Myrna Stompin at the Savoy

Myrna your late entry was very hard to go past for my favourite for this week.

But my favourite this week is

Liz S aka cua94 with You Dun Stomped on My Heart
Who can resist a line like "You just sorta stomped on my aorta"?
And watching you participate in each season and becoming more at ease in front of the camera has been fun.
Song choice was great (and fun).
And playing and singing was just fine too.
Really enjoyed it.

PM me your address Liz and ebay will send you a cheap little first aid kit as a memento of season 121.
