Bill Tapia and Low G question

Lately I've been enjoying the music of the late Bill Tapia. I especially love the few old recordings from the 30s that they added to the CDs he did late in his life. Does anyone know if he played in high or low g tuning?

A related question: does anyone know the history of low G tuning? I know Herb Ohta used it on the soprano, but was there already a low g tradition in the islands from before the 60s? I assume folks like Eddie Kamae and other early uke heros from the 50s/60s played high g only. If anyone knows better, please correct me....

Bill was a friend of mine.

He told me that he started using a low G tuning in the 1920s, and that he wasn't aware of any other uke players using that tuning before then.
