View Full Version : Season 125 - Summer SOUL Week

It’s Season of the Ukulele 125 – Summer SOUL Week!

http://youtu.be/3olsGDzlhrs

Your task is to record a soul tune. It could be a soul song from the classic repertoire, which I think centers around Stax/Volt and FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals, but certainly goes farther than just those two locales. It could be a song not normally thought of as a soul tune, but done in a soulful manner. Your choice.

Multitracking allowed and encouraged. Oooh, I’d love to see some horns somewhere in there this week.

The video doesn’t have to be made for this week – if you have shown your soul in a previously made clip, bring it on.

One official entry and no more than three bonuses, please, since I would like to comment on all of them.

And three – count ‘em, three – types of prizes –

Everyone who enters gets a prize, to be announced later. All you have to do is to get me your address somehow.
One terrific soul chatchke for the most soulful rendition of the week, as displayed and described in the video. Doesn’t have to be the most technically proficient, but your soul must come through.
For every distinct collaboration, you get an entry in the hat. Three winners will be pulled, who get a special soul compilation. (I flubbed up in the intro video and called it a ‘collaboration’)

Entries playlist
(https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikS1ztACO1K8-6b18z2RbDuF9bARakxn)
Bonus playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikS1ztACO1KqlqdHXAhk6MZu8KsBjR3z)
Flashback playlist (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLikS1ztACO1Llh3faqDUGEYAj8rigHAaL)

For those in need of suggestions, this site (http://www.soultracks.com/greatest-soul-albums) seems to have a decent list. But remember - ANY song can be done in a soulful way. I mentioned one example in the video, but another would be Otis' version of The Tennessee Waltz.

One small correction – in the intro video, I say that the collaborations I have done are “great”. I mean that they were great fun, not necessarily great quality – but it’s all about fun.

And it’s all about SOUL.

BTW, this may be the longest intro video for a Season that I have ever seen, but since a few minutes of it is the great Otis Redding, I make no apologies.

See. If this were really a competition we would not have any more entries.
Who can compete with this?
I'll have to wear THE T-shirt this week and hope some of this talent rubs off.
Pure soul brilliance right here!

Brian - SOUL comes from inside. Reach down there and grab a hunk. But this is unbelievably killer . . .

Hey, in some past weeks, a particular tune has received many different interpretations. This could happen again this week. Just sayin . . . .

well i live and learn! i think a prize for everyone is a lovely idea. regardless of how tiny and humble and light in weight it might be, whichever way you shake it up this is gonna cost a fortune in international postage, right? especially now we have, what is it now, half a million seasonistas?

I know it's not time for REAL entries or even ACTUAL bonuses yet, but this pre-show has been so much fun for me with some of my favorite ukers EVER bringing out their soul classics! I just had to join in the fun.

This is one of the first few songs I ever recorded on the uke back in this 2011 FLASHBACK. I've loved this tune for so long! I even recorded it again later but I like this one better. xoxoxox

Aw, c'mon CJ. You're a pretty handy bluesman. All you need to do is soften it and smooth it a bit and hey presto... soul!

Wicked Pedia has this to say http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_music

Kinda take R & B and give it the "Yacht Rock" treatment.

I'm thinking along the lines of Sam Cooke and Ray Charles. Both great artists, sadly no longer with us.

Hey folks - great beginning to this soulful week!

It was my plan to allow older videos to be entries, but a couple of you have suggested your previous-created vids are flashbacks. That's OK, I'll make up a third playlist. But if you all could let me know if an submission is an entry, bonus or flashback, it would help out.

Keep 'em coming - i'll start adding comments in a few hours.

Normally I wouldn't do this but it's a tough week and our awesome host is letting us post old vids. Getting a new knee tomorrow and won't be able to do a new song for this week. This song I did for Season 82 and is listed as one of the top soul songs of the 70s. This is such a great Season. I'll be recuperating by watching all the great videos this week!

Season 125 is off and running – and a soulful start it is.

The Ukelites – In The Midnight Hour (Flashback)
Now THAT’S what I’m talking about. Could the bar be set any higher? But remember, soul cats and kitties, that it’s not just about technical perfection – it’s what comes out from inside. And it would be great to hear some more versions of this classic Pickett. But The Ukelites smash it out of the park in every way with this one!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8fyOrEV_7w
The Cloverdale Kids – You Left The Water Running (Flashback)
Another stellar performance, which we have come to expect from the Cloverdale Crowd. You guys got soul in spades. More, more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBcXqAAT9LI
decaturcomp – A Change Is Gonna Come (Flashback)
One of the greatest of all soul songs, from one of the greatest of all soul singers, done by the most soulful man in Decatur! (at least!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBcXqAAT9LI
weegingayin – Try A Little Tenderness (Flashback)
Man, you are rockin’ that soul ukulele style. You done took what I consider to be the greatest soul song of all time back to it’s roots. Great version, and half the early entries are Otis songs. You all have great taste!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klvBzZqYhJg
pabrizzer – Memphis Train
Brian – you are rockin’ the soul. I love Rufus, but did not know this one. What a delight, and a great version. Oozing with soul, as usual!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRoFbRoy1Lk
erivel – These Arms of Mine
Wonderful, Eric. Your vocal puts across such a powerful feeling of vulnerability, the whole song comes alive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo-Cs7qPteQ
xommen – People Get Ready
You don’t consider yourself a soul singer? Uh, wrong, my friend. Fantastic arrangement and really moving version. I especially love the mild effects on the bass. And I’m really glad this song made this week.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02C2qUSlnJ8
frisbee fred – Ain’t No Sunshine (Flashback)
Great song, and soulful rendition. Thanks for getting in this week, Fred.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prLj_7ZmtlY
RAB11 – Reach Out
Nothing quite like those songs that Reach Out and pull you into a whole type of music. Great version, performed with real feeling!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFKi273H8PI
greyghost – Ain’t No Sunshine (Flashback)

I was raised on Northern...Motown, Tamla, Money...etc, but there is something about southern soul that really gets to the heart of things. While I love the Motor City sound, I am more connected to the sound that came out of Fame Recording, more addicted to what many attribute to the river and it's voice (http://www.magpictures.com/muscleshoals/). Well, we have a river here too- I reckon it has a voice as well.
Why Candi Staton is not more recognized is a mystery to me. She is famous for a cover of "Stand By Your Man" which I would bin in a second...but Otis is famous for "Dock of the Bay"- also a puzzle. I suppose that is what sells records.
In any event, Candi is a treasure, and still going strong. I smeared Cloverdale all over "Heart On A String" here- do yourself a favor and if you have not heard the original, do that (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yqus_dlfLgA). Then watch mine and try to be kind.

Rick ... or anyone who feels authoritative ... is there really a distinction between soul and R&B? And if so, what is it, and how do we tell which qualifies and which doesn't? In this case apply the Decaturcomp / Thornton Rule. this states that if there is any confusion or any way in which the combatants in the ukulele jousting

arena are in anyway not sure, confused , disconbooberated , perplexed , puzzled , not clear, dungivashit about the rules then do exactly as nature intended .

Just do what YOU want to do . This leaves the Host in a moral dilemma and a mess of his....or her .....own making . Do they come off as an authoritarian SOB (I have no idea what those initials mean as they are from a USA manual on this matter ) or do they grin and bare it ...I mean bear it.

That's just my understanding of the Decaturcomp/Thornton principle and I may be wrong........:D

Oh .......and what do you mean by R and B ?...'cos to me it means Rhythm and Blues ...can I get an amen?....not the dre' Rhythm and Bass...(bleah)...but I am 55.

Just my personal opinion. There is a lot of overlap between them but I see R & B - at least in it's original incarnation in the 1940s, 50s & 60s as having more of a raw edge to it while soul was smoother and softer. What is referred to as R & B these days seems, to me, pretty much indistinguishable from soul. The Wikipedia articles I have linked below refer to it as "contemporary R & B"

Two useful Wikipedia links for more detail:

Soul Music: http: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_music
Rhythm & Blues: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_and_blues

There are other links within the two articles which might be worth following up.

CJ, thanks! Yes, indeed, rhythm and blues ... that's the thing closest to soul, I think ..... but what the heck to I know about either? (Obviously. :))

The "do whatever the heck you want" rule might be great advice for some, but I fear I have applied it one (or 25) too many times, and not everybody has been happy with me doing that. So for me, personally, I suspect more caution is advisable.

I do have a few earlier Seasons videos that might or might not qualify (the new work-in-progress one definitely does ... it was #1 on the soul charts, so I'm confident about that one) ... so before I go off half-cocked ... again ... I thought I'd best get some Real Information.

Plus I suspect I may not be the only one who has run up against this question and is feeling some uncertainty about it ... maybe?

No authority here at all as I don't know a lot about this type of music except for owning a copy of 'Standing In The Shadows Of Motown". But I've never understood why soul music is called soul music. To me it's just a sexing up of what is real soul music: gospel and spiritual songs.

I was thinking about that myself. I know that most of the great soul singers originally came from the church. But, for me, it's an emotive style as much as a specific type of music. So if you all put your soul into it, it's soul music.

...To me it's just a sexing up of what is real soul music: gospel and spiritual songs.

At one level that's just what it is. Gospel with secular lyrics and with some stylistic elements from the blues. The Sam Cooke song I just posted pretty much uses a typical blues chord progression though without the 7ths so the result is smoother and less "edgy" than a true blues.

A fair answer to the question is about Soul v. R&B v. Funk is here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:R&B_and_Soul_Music).

Very close, Ceej!
My rubric is, "If you have any questions please make up an answer yourself and then post more videos accordian to the outcome of your decision, which is final." Having said that, this isn't my season and I have no authority whatsoever here (or really elsewhere, but please don't tell anyone!) But then, I'm 62 so what do I know?
Bloody precious little, I can tell you.

Give us a break.

hey there, i can see a little debate, haven't properly checked the thread, gonna post my vid and then go back and see what other people have done and said, and i'm sure learn a whole bunch of stuff about soul!

this is "tainted love", originally recorded by gloria jones, and covered by, among others, soft cell

i love soft cell, and just so yearned to be marc almond for five minutes, that i kept the soft cell lyrics ie. "boy" instead of "girl", and i apologise if this screams eighties electronica more than soul - but soft cell were inspired by gloria's version, and i was inspired by marc, and so i hope some soul comes through!

weegingayin – Bring It On Home To Me
This song has been done many, many times, and you can add our own weegingayin to that illustrious crew. Works just great with your uke playing on this one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzmmzk1iUOQ
UkeyDave – Abraham, Martin & John
We all know that Dave possesses a beautiful soul, as shown here weekly. Great song, great rendition, great addition to Soul Week. I love the last verse, which I assume is a tribute to Marvin Gaye.

You can’t, cannot, have too much Pickett in Soul Week.

pabrizzer – Drift Away
I’m not sure if this song was made for you or you were made for this song, Brian. But another great one from Down Under. I really like your uke arrangement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2SaowkItJ4
The Cloverdale Kid – Heart On A String
Jeezo, Dave – I don’t know much of Candi Stanton, but your rendition of this one makes me believe everything you say about her. Soulful to the max, but that’s Cloverdale, right?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xMLfZatXio
Tootler - Cupid
The inimitable Tootler turns in a classic performance of a big Sam Cooke hit. And if Sam Cooke ain’t soul, no one is – great rendition!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-lhPPCxBzY
Tootler – Love Don’t Live Here Anymore (Flashback)
This might be my favorite video of yours, Geoff – I did not anticipate such a starkly soulful version, but you nailed it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwoZ4OkPKdA
BEVOMU – Tainted Love
I would not have thought Tainted Love was a soul tune, but you gave it a soulful treatment, BEV. Great job.

i went a-googling, as one does when one is quite stumped! and soul took me to british soul and british soul took me to northern soul and a northern soul hits list had tainted love on it and that's when all my synapses sparked and overloaded my brain with the single thought... TCK

<TCK>I have collected both all my life- I can take a crack at this I reckon.
R&B- African American popular music most often being linked to it's origin in the 1940's. Nix that- I will say it goes back a lot further, and borrowed a lot from the Jazz of the time as well. In any event- this was "race music" when our parents were kids, and why we had things like white bands doing black music for labels. This is why the McGuire Sisters were famous.
In any event- driving beat. R&B is the grandfather to Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae (which I adore), as well as our beloved Rock and Roll (whole new can of worms).
Soul music- this adds one critical element. Being pissed off. If you go back and listen to some old R&B (Here is some radio if you are really interested (http://http://dlaurice.podomatic.com/entry/2014-07-03T07_16_04-07_00)) , you will find the themes within the music do not often either celebrate being African American, or talk much of the struggle that being so was at the time (ie...R&B never calls us crackers to task). SOUL does that. R&B meets the church, and the church is where everyone has value. If you follow the early days of SOUL music (late forties early fifties) and you listen for that moment when Louis Jordan stopped singing silly songs about Joe and his pants and all kinds of other silly things...and started in on "If You're So Smart, How Come You Ain't Rich" you can see what is emerging through soul music. Put on Mavis Staples and Pops playing "Jesus is on the Mainline", follow that striaght through to Curtis Mayfield doing the best song ever (I did a 38 page paper on this one in grad school (http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm8lcTTDp0o)l) and "what is SOUL" becomes really evident, and at the same time, much of it retains it's charm (Motown- Beechwood 45789 comes to mind).
Then there is the great divide. Northern Soul, for my English friends, is stuff that came out of Detroit...Motown and it's subsidiaries, which were very whimsical (doing the locomotion...) and fun until Marvin split his nut when Tammi died and started dropping the real...until David Ruffin OD'd and the Temps decided Papa was a rolling stone. Anyway, the Northern Soul scene in England celebrates the rarest of the rare, and those guys are BONKERS about records. I have digital recordings of 45's that the original owners payed $3,000 or more for.
Southern Soul- more church, more grit, more passion. Small wonder considering what those folks were treated like, are treated like today...they have a lot to be angry about. Not that the Northern experience was much different in 1964...we were just told it was. In any event, the Southern stuff is where the real voice of soul comes from.

Now- last time I knew a theme well (SKA...do not get me started- this is my true musical passion) I was a complete knob end when folks were playing reggae...why? Because this is important to me and it pissed me off. I realize now to most, this is all trivial BS and promise to play well with others- play whatever you want as long as our host is OK with it... but those of you who don't know Soul- you ought to.
Anyway- what do I know...just a cracker from Cloverdale.
Keep the Faith
</TCK>
And yes BEV...you can do Gloria Jones (soft cell). Out of all the garbage videos I post- you ought to see this one (http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIdYLEA4rAo). Bolan died in Jones's arms and in her car...and if I had not done it already, I would now. Please bring it.
And as we learn on the Seasons...what we ask for is always provided. Thank you UKELITES. Posted as I wrote- now someone play the darn song for me.

Actually thats a really good point Rick. All of the lyrics i can find have the last verse as "Bobby". However, when you listen to the Marvin Gaye version HERE. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbnaaz75M4g) He clearly sings Marvin. Does anyone have an explanation for this because I certainly don't?

I hear Bobby, which is how it was originally written(for another Dead Kennedy), but Marvin Gaye...the man was legend. Went a little crazy when Tammi died- did not have the best life by any stretch of the imagination- would not surprise me if he knew his life would come to an end early. Way too early.
Dion song. My mums favorite...love this tune.

Hi all! I'm a little annoyed with myself - as I can't think of a "soul song" for Greenie/Rick's party. So, I've been listening to the videos submitted so far to find ideas & inspiration - WOW.

So, I've been giving some songs a bash but I'm getting nowhere :( I'm my head, I'm hearing fabulous bass lines, rich beats and powerful voices - but what's actually coming out of my mouth is Kermit the Frog and my uke playing is so weak.

Hi soul sisters and brothers,
here's a labour of love we've been working our swinging buts off for two evenings.

I need to tell a little story before I post the song. Let's call it the TCK influence... Around 1999/2000 right after graduating from art school me and my friend Rishi got into the habit of sending each other mix tapes on minidiscs (remember those?). We kept it going for a couple of years and it was some sort of mutual musical education through mail. My friend used to mix me some old and obscure funk, soul, electronics and hiphop and I would send him mixes of sixties Italian soundtracks, spiritual jazz, Bollywood, lo-fi indie rock and post-rock.

Each of the discs I received were a musical trip through new and mysterious places. It was great. The song we've recorded for this Season is the first song on the very first minidisc I received from Rishi. I think re ripped it from and old bent and scratched 7". It crackled, the needle went all over the place, but man did it add character. I have loved this song ever since. By the way, the second song on the disc was King Kong by the Jimmy Castor Bunch; another gem. I don't have the minidiscs anymore, but I remember a lot of the songs and cherish them. I copied a few of the disc onto cd's years ago.

The song we did is called Mama Soul by The Soul Survivors. It's a slice of Philly Soul from 1969 and it didn't do much in the charts. It got to 115 or something like that. So enough introduction, let's boogie! We went 'all the way' with production, I kind of lost track on how many tracks we've used, but it's a lot...

eugene ukulele – The Man From Galilee
I do believe Jesus had a whole ton of soul. And since the lineage of soul stems from the church, this one works like crazy in Soul week – and it’s an original! Excellent, as always, Eugene – thanks for “gracing” Soul week.

I had a feeling this one was right in your wheelhouse, and I do believe it is. (I believe to my soul) Ray Charles was one big heaping pile of Soul, so anything he touched was magically transformed. And you made it your own – fantastic!

Not a lot of people taking up the challenge of giving a soul performance of a song not normally thought of as soul, so I gave it a shot: Here's my cover of Tina Turner's cover of Deep Purple's cover of the Beatles' "Help!"

Hey Seasonistas,

here comes our entry for Summer SOUL week:

"I Did My Part" was the flip side of Irma Thomas' hit single "It' Raining" from 1962. Irma Thomas a/k/a the Soul queen of New Orleans is one of our favorite singers.

We did it with Ukulele (doubled for stereo sound and one solo track), UBass, some computer drums (only bassdrum, snare and sticks) and alto sax. And lots of vocals …

Great week again, real fun and great music!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU8efQ9hSXk&feature=youtu.be

We also work on a very special bonus, hope we get it ready in time. But now: Good night, it's almost 4 am over here.

I've already submitted a flashback and a soul re-imagining of a non-soul song, so I guess it's time for a proper entry now--a real soul masterpiece (the original, not my version) by Al Green. I actually learned this one to play it for my wife's birthday. If any of you enjoy it .001 as much as she did, my work here is done.

Doug was a DJ who did a bit of comedy stuff.
I actually met him at a Triumph motorcycle ride day and he was a nice bloke.

and no I offered a beer coaster to everyone who entered my first season I think - didn't get that many takers and yes it's too late now.

Oh dear...oh dear ...oh dear ......now I have to go find his back catalogue ...also Paul Hogan of whom this has reminded me and Kevin Johnson.......(Kevin Johnson I am right ....? hilarious Pa ...you are a bad dude )

OK, truth be told, I was saving this one to listen to as a reward for a bunch of work – that’s how good I thought it would be. And I was NOT disappointed. Having missed last weeks season, I've found myself in the rare predicament of having a day off work and spent the last hour or so on my Uke and managed to record four songs for this season, 2 in one take, the other 2 in three but still! :) Apologise in advance for the multipost but you can't add more than one video per post :/ So to kick things off, a bitta Stevie :) will post as they upload. I've gone back in time a bit for my second new recording for this week. The Great Pretender was originally recorded by the Platters in 1955. It has since been covered by many others. Sam Cooke's version had a flute in it and I thought that was a good idea. Unfortunately my flute is a diatonic one and I can't play it in E so I've used a tenor recorder instead.

Her is a song by an artist you probably don't know, Bobby Bazini. He is a canadian 25 years old and his first album in 2010 was a hit here in Canada, and specially in Quebec. He was only 21 then and he sings his emotions like he has already seen it all. You can check him in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw8p3fDfMSw) if you like but please, no comparison to my humble version, I think I took it a little high !!!

This was Number One on the Soul charts in early 1973, following Superstition by Stevie Wonder and preceding Could It Be I'm Falling In Love? by the Spinners.

A late night one take, in the spirit of the original record.

Timmy Thomas recorded this as a demo on organ and cheesy drum machine, but the record company decided it was perfect as is and released it, rather than re-recording it with a full band and big production.

Good decision, it sold two million copies and went on to spur cover versions from the likes of Sade, Stevie Winwood and Santana.

Well, I've seen a whole lot of that other Bill Withers song, but it probably won't surprise you that this much more uplifting one is my happy childhood soul song memory.

I did it first thing upon waking, when my Jewfro is at its souliest. That's as soul as I get, I'm afraid. Hopefully the visual element ever so slightly compensates for the lack of soul (and ability to play that infernal Am-Bm-and-back-again transition cleanly) in my musicality.

(I was going to actually play it in A, instead of G capo 2, which I ended up doing ... the barre slide up Bm-C#m-D 7655 is kinda cool and fun, but also hard for me to play cleanly at this point. G seemed easier ... and it was easier for my guitar-mates to play along in on jam night ... but it's a challenge too. Time will tell if I keep playing the song and eventually master one version or the other.

Capo-ing my uke does make it sound less clippy on the video, so maybe I should do that all the time. Except I should remember to re-tune when I decide to switch from G# (capo 1) to A (capo 2). It sounded great in G#. :) Sorry about that.)

http://youtu.be/zL5wzLLo3AA

I had a much more epic soul song planned - a different #1 hit from that same year - complete with a whole cadre of backup singers and coordinated dancing. But guess what ... that turned out to be Really Hard. Progress has been made, and it will get done, but not this week. For sure it must be done by the end of the year, before my hosting gig. (And yes, that's a tiny hint. Which you all are certain to forget by the time Season 150 rolls around. If you guess it, please don't steal it. :))

UkeCan1 > Lean on me
Wonderful. Real soul.
I've difficulties to identify sometimes songs as special soul. Some are for me to much blues or to much pop, even lots of Motowns dont hit my idea. There has to be this special non-dissolving or kind of dissonant sound, and kind of sad mood. Difficult without brass, definitely with my restricted ukabilities. Not to talk about singing.
But The OnlyUkeThatMatters presented Confusion/Lee Dorsey (great rendition!), and I was triggered , searched and found ... a Wonder named Stevie.

As all songs I'm not real familiar to, also too fast. But here's my entry and (what) I wish:

A bonus - not exactly a soul song, but I think it was one of the first, in a way.... I'm not going to be able to make a better effort at it than this, and no time tomorrow so here we go.... a classic from way back. We saw Show Boat at the theatre a couple weeks ago and this number is - fabulous. Til now. I'd like to see some of you gals with good voices do it..... tenor uke with low G tuned to Bb..... thanks for your forbearance, folks! Off to cook for my Mr Man and guests now!

I personally think a lot of U2 song can be called soul, this song is one of them in my opinion. This is the arrangement I use with my band UKE22. This is my last bonus song, the First Time by U2.

Been gone all week to the lake for our annual vacation with the kids and 4 grand-kids. We had really slow internet access so I haven't been able to check out all this week's entries yet, but wanted to get something uploaded first. I chose "Stand By Me" because I've been practicing it lately from our local club's song list, and I saw that it was on the referenced list of top "Soul" songs. (Hope I'm not the umpteenth one to do this one here!) I am not real sure that I understand exactly what constitutes a soul song, but I know when a song's sound or lyrics touch my soul and that's all the qualification needed in my book. Hope you like it:

I've been away for a week on a summer camp. But while there I recorded, with another of the English teachers, my good friend Jeremy Williams, a soulful song that I wrote to a tune by Galen Fraser (son of Alasdair Fraser).

The camera operator is my lovely assistant Georgina, who has a smile that would light up anyone's day!

So here is "Everytime I see Your Smile" for your listening pleasure ;)

We had gone out to lunch today and this song came on over the pub's PA. My wife and I started singing along - much to our daughter's disgust :biglaugh: so I thought excellent bonus number for soul week.

Originally recorded by the Drifters and later by many others, including the Rolling Stones on their second album - where I first heard it.

A big rush of Soul at the end of the week! Here is a recap of the first batch - the rest coming later today. What a week!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeTkZvLsW4w
CeeJay – Dock Of The Bay
Yes – this is soul! Really like the uke arrangement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpJZG8XNs20
markwo – Dock Of The Bay Bonus
Two Docks in a row – completely different takes. I love the laid back feeling in this version, just like Otis did in his own way. And I love the stage move at the end – classic Soul! Irma Thomas usually starts her shows the opposite way, with her incredible voice coming from off-stage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkak4T6kNE0
Tootler – The Great Pretender Bonus
Wonderful version. Great use of recorder – never thought of it as a Soul instrument, but live and learn. And fantastic multi-tracked vocals – it ain’t easy matching the Platters all by yourself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ClSPcIpJWQ
TheOnlyUkeThatMatters - Confusion
I was waiting for Ralf’s entry, and he did not disappoint. What a selection – Allen Toussaint, the eminence gris of New Orleans music, in one of his typically emotionally complex songs. Everything he does is funky. And the by-now-typical The OnlyUkeThatMatters brilliance on vocals and uke.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msm0VjYoeFo
lelouden – A Change Is Gonna Come
This version suits your voice perfectly – as did Sam’s. Love it, and I like the tribute you showed to Mr. Cooke at the beginning. He was a true pioneer.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5V4CDapidA
CeeJay – Walking The Dog
And if Rufus Thomas ain’t soulful, then there is no such thing. Funky uke at its best – thanks, CeeJay!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEA68Ic01Lc
BEVOMU - Yazoo Bonus
Haven’t heard this one before, but I can hear the soul. Thanks, BEV.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iy1wBFWFt2s
Jazzbanjorex – Midnight Special Bonus
Heaven forbid that I compliment one of those 6-string things, but your playing is absolutely perfect. And you hit another soul vocal home run here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zS7_GfRTmqU
Southside Mike – 634 5789
Now, I know Southside Mike – we all know Southside Mike. And he is one soulful cat. Mike, you really bring it on this. In the pocket, as always. I can’t stop smiling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLRUf45KxWo
f2fanatic – I Wonder
Oh yeah, this is soul, absolutely! The first time I heard this great song, and a great rendition!

What a great song! And a great version. Love this tons, Casey, and brimming with Soul!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPrJwlf7jVY
~dave~~wave~ - Everybody Wants To Live Together
Real live, and real soul. Greatly soulful, works like crazy. Love the uke solos too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zL5wzLLo3AA
UkeCan1 – Lean On Me
Great soulful vocals on yet another classic Bill Withers tune.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I9gkQPzH54
elmann - I Wish
One of my favorite Stevie songs. I had no idea it could be done this well on uke – you did it with great soul and skill.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MALkot8Jz0Y
barefootgypsy – Can’t Help Lovin Bonus
This is exactly the type of song that soul geniuses, like Aretha, could kill – and you did a pretty good job here too, Lesley!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFLLJLrVgHA
xommen – The First Time Bonus
No question that U2 has soul, and your version here really sounds soulful – I’m imagining a few female backup singers and it’s totally soul. Great song and great version!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwVyp4PNCTM
The Ukelites – Blowin’ Up My Mind Bonus
Words fail me. This is so over-the-top fantastic that even that blobby bloke on the right could not ruin it. Personally, I can say that this collaboration was unbelievably fun – Steffan is a brilliant musician, producer and video artiste, Miri is sultry soul vocals personified.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puJXdmWJutM
GT3T11 – Chain Gang
Uh, ah. A real soul workout!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgmHwxI4kqg
jazzbanjorex – Soul Man Bonus
Yes, you are a Soul Man, Rex – if there was any doubt before this week, there is none now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lHJUvKcHvE
ddanner – Stand By Me
Thanks for finding time to express your soul, Dennis – Ben E. King always hits the soulful spot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDJprQn8aIo
Joko – Let It Go
Extra credit from braving the Burmese weather to show your soul!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPm5vC06p4s
uke4ia - Uptight
Jim, you show your soul chops on this one – I always knew you had ‘em!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjFovycabOw
thesillydave – The Love You Save Bonus
Love that uke arrangement. And soul can unite the 12 year old Michael Jackson and the silly Dave, who just might be a bit older.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CknFnplTGzk
Barablance – Every Time I See Your Smile
Once again, I’m hearing this with full horns and delicate strings, arranged by Allen Toussaint. Soulful, even in the echoing room.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI8lop5Kui0
Tootler – Under The Boardwalk Bonus
Not only soulful, but completely summerful. And a soul kazoo to boot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6Ramm5KLG8
nongdam – Just The Two Of Us
What a fitting end to Soul week. Very cool and relaxed version of this classic. Seoul Soul rules!

Funny every time I sing this song I think (you know the part after all the "I know's") I want to sing out "Oughtta leave that 'ol uke alone, cuz I can't get no laundry d-u-u-one".:o
Way too busy to do much ukin this week. Had a good time yesterday at the No. VA Uke Fest. Our club opened the festival with 3 songs and then had an open mic where several of our members went on to play including me. All did very well. Plus my mother who is out for a visit from CA got to see her girl onstage (:

I started out my day with disaster though. I asked a family member to put my ukes in the car for me. They put them....behind the car. Now I will never forget the sound ukuleles make while being crushed by tires!

Wow! I am shocked and honored to be the "winner" this week! I look forward to the new theme every week and this one was just a great theme with so many great songs to choose from. I immediately thought of Hold On I'm Comin' and I planned on multitracking and adding the horn part afterwards. But then Sam jumped in with that crazy dancing and I didn't want to mess with it at all after that! I knew it couldn't be improved. As far as I'm concerned, the pen is his!
