Week 129 - Theme Week!

For this week, your mission -should you choose to accept it -is to record a song that you would choose to be your theme song. It will probably be a song that you already know and love. It should represent your personality, your life, an aspect of it, whatever. -Here's an example: my brother-in-law works all of the time and he chose 'Takin Care of Business' for his theme song. If you can't think of an existing song that seems to fit, you can write your own. Have fun with this and don't overthink it.

Here are your guidelines:

- one entry will be allowed for your personal Theme song. (Only people with multiple personalities would need more than one Theme song!)

-When u post on the forum include in the description why you chose that song. Maybe we will learn a little more about each other.

-your song must be newly recorded for this Season.

- multi tracking is fine - go crazy - or don't - it's your song.

- your face must be shown in the video......Just kidding Birdseye! Enjoy your anonymity.

*Bonus Entries*- if you're like me and you are obsessed and enjoy doing multiple videos each week, you may perform TV show theme songs for bonuses -no limits.

Prizes - my personal favorite video will win a new set of ukulele strings. Also one randomly chosen person will get strings as well!

Now get to work and have fun!

there is a great website called chordify - if you can find a vid link eg youtube to the song you want, you paste the link into the chordify page, and it works out some chords for you

i say some chords, rather than THE chords, because usually you have to do a little bit of work - often simplifying down. a lot songs have repeating patterns of three or four chords that loop all the way through, or a pattern for verses and something a little bit different for the chorus. so if you see repeating patterns in the chordify chord chart, jot them down, simplify them down, and see if you can make it work for you. you could try it with a song you already know the chords for, so you can see how what chordify comes up with, relates to what you already know works for that song, to get a feel for how it all works

when i first tried chordify i found it very frustrating, because the chords didn't seem to make sense, but people here on the seasons explained to me that the chords it comes up, are something you can use as a starting point, as a clue, to what really works. there is rarely one perfect right answer anyway, even when you can find the chords online for a song, you can often get away with simplifying them down a bit, well, i try to anyway!!!!

blah i'll shut up now!

Hey buddy - Here are a couple more...

Doctor Uke (http://www.doctoruke.com) - this is a great website because he gives you the song sheets and a lot of the songs have audio files attached to them so you can play along.

Chordie (http://chordie.com) - this is another great website. Thousands of songs and the nice thing is that for most of the songs you can change the tuning from guitar to ukulele so the chords show up correctly. You can also change the key of the song and it will adjust the chords for you.

Ultimate Guitar (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com) - I use this one quite a bit as well.

Also check out Riff Station you get a months free trial its amazing you can load up a cd or music from your computer and it works out the chords. It shows the guitar shapes for the chords but you just play uke chords.if you purchase the full product I believe you can set it up for ukulele.but the free trial is definitely worth a look.

My Theme Song. An original.
I am someone who will avoid hard work if possible and I certainly spend a lot of time playing ukulele.
I know some will argue that I play blues type music quite often but by playing the blues you can sort of sing them out of your system.

Why this video? We need to be there for each other. Don't go out of our way to hurt someone but out of our way to love on them. Life is too short. If I need help, I am asking for it. If you need help, and you ask me you can bet that I will give it everything I got. My wife and I have been foster parents for over 20 years and have spent a lot of time being leaned on but also spent a lot of time leaning.

This is an original I wrote for season 129, which is heavily based on the Dutch Lyrics of Gewone man by Pisa (a TV show that we had in the Netherland). Basically they where looking for the average man, and could not really find him. I think that is what these lyrics also say, that even though there are a lot of people that have similar lives, we all are unique ;).
I came to those lyrics by asking my wife what song would describe me, she came up with the Pisa song, which I then took as a bases for my theme song. By the way size 44 is a Dutch shoe size I'm not really sure how it relates to other countries shoe sizes but wikipedia probably had the answer if you really want to know.

this is my theme tune, it's also the real theme tune to a kid's tv series, made in france in the sixties, and shown in the UK, dubbed into english, when i was a kid in the seventies

"the flashing blade"

i choose this as my theme tune because i'm always getting into arguments. i think i'm wading in courageously, standing up for what's right, but everyone else thinks i'm just a wrong headed, hot headed, twit. *sigh* i wouldn't mind... but they're right!

the clip is from the intro to the actual show - i am more likely to be on my high horse, than on a real horse, but apart from that, it's all pretty accurate

Throughout my life, one thing that I've learned is that we need to be true to ourselves, we need to look within to find what we really want in life. This is what the song's about.
Just me and the uke, I multitracked a little piano for the bridge, and that's about all. Hope you like it.

Here we go then Mr Markwo. I think that this is a perfect choice for me.
I grew up in an area with a large Afro-Caribbean community and Reggae was never very far away during my upbringing so I guess it has been a massive musical influence on me.
Now anyone who knows me well will I’m sure tell you that I usually ALWAYS have something to say about contentious issues and love nothing better than a good old intellectual debate about most social issues.
I like to think of myself as a critical thinker. Some folk call it argumentative. Labels differ and are always dependant on who is dishing them out. Social injustice and power inequalities are never far from my mind.
Anyway, here is my entry. Its very quickly and roughly put together (as I have three long night shifts at work coming up). There are lots of mistakes and I’m not sure the verses are even sung in the right tune but I hope you enjoy it all the same and either way Uke players tend to be extremely kind and forgiving. As a highly accomplished expert Uke player once said to me “we were all shit players once”. lol
Great theme and thanks again for pointing me in the direction of what should have been glaringly obvious to me Mark. AND also my FIRST one chord song. :-)

I think that even though the rhythm stands up ok on its own I still think it would have sounded better with some heavy bass of which of course I DO NOT play.

I think I may struggle with this theme. Perhaps I'm not the best judge of what is the right song for me. The minute you said DONT OVERTHINK IT ....... you guessed it. I overthunk it. :-0Ha, had to smile - I'm just looking at this for the first time, and thinking exactly the same thing! Will be overthinking it off-an-on all day! Anyway, I do hope to be able to take part! It's a lovely idea for a theme! :D

Lonesome Traveler.

So, … what has been said about our entering and leaving the world alone? (please do not leave a pamphlet on my door-step)

I did much of my lone traveling with an old 00-18 as my 6-string companion. Of course, neither of us was old, then. We've just parted, after over 50 years, and I have much more portable musical traveling companions.

Great theme and thanks again for pointing me in the direction of what should have been glaringly obvious to me Mark. AND also my FIRST one chord song. :-)

A fine entry Dave. What a great song and who doesn't love Bob Marley? It's amazing what he could do with one chord! Whoever recommended this song to u should be commended! Don't worry about mistakes. When I make them I just tell people that's my arrangement of the song!

Nice classic folk tune Dick. I think this song suits your voice well as it has a lot of character. You know if you have a ukulele you are never that lonesome!

There is a slow train coming (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQbfVSuTgzw) up around the bend.

" A widely-told, but unverifiable, story says that one day as Robert Robinson was riding in a
stagecoach a lady asked him what he thought of the hymn [come thou fount] she was humming.
He responded, "Madam, I am the poor unhappy man who wrote that hymn many years ago,
and I would give a thousand worlds, if I had them, to enjoy the feelings I had then."

Thought this one would take much longer to get a good take but I got lucky today and find this one acceptable. "Stand" by REM was the theme song to a FOX TV show named "Get a Life" starring comedian Chris Elliot that I faintly remember about a thirty year old paper boy who lives in his parent's house.

Now this song had many challenges for me. It is very fast and long winded to the point I just couldn't find it playable at normal speed so I slowed it down and cut the singing. Also was in a new key for me and the chord changes were a challenge along with me still not reliably putting my pinky in the right spot for F#. I think I need to get checked for COPD after trying to sing this song for two days.

Thanks for viewing and commenting. I have much to learn and am very grateful for you all.

Can anyone educate me on 9th chords? A couple songs I want to do need them and I want to work out how to be able to play them instead of just memorising shapes... Am I right in thinking you take the higher of the root notes in a chord and put it up two semitones?

Can anyone educate me on 9th chords?
It's just counting,
Chord = sound of multiple notes, Example with G (major):
Power chord G = base + 5th = G + D (two notes). On a uke sounds two tones on 4 strings.
chord G = base + 3rd + 5th= G + B + D (3 notes). On a uke sounds three tones on 4 strings.
chord G7 = base + 3rd + 5th + 7th = G + B + D + F (4 notes). On a uke each strings takes one tone.
chord G9 = base + 3rd + 5th + 7th + 9th = G + B + D + F + A (5 notes). On a uke with 4 strings only 4 of this tones can sound. The "formative" one's will be taken for the chord, it's common to neglect the 5th.

On a stave: For major chords it's only a jump from line to line (or from gap to gap). For minor chords one should mind the steps/half steps.

I find this to be a very challenging theme. I don't think I'm over thinking it per say. I think most people have so many layers to them that to sum a person up into just one song, well, its just not possible. Guess I'll sum up what I'm feeling in my soul most recently and not on past or future. My life and personality any many other things have changed greatly over my time on Earth.

Markwo

Anybody struggling??? Remember to take this as lightly as you want. No one song could ever possibly sum up anybody's life. Think of an aspect or one side of your personality. Or maybe if there is a song that is "your jam". Or as I think Linda suggested, ask someone who knows you well what song they would chose for you. Play it and tell us why. I certainly don't want this to be stressful or homeworky. Have fun with it.

I rejected Nowhere Man for its self incrimination, and settled for a little known song from a long disbanded Australian country band.
The song is "I Don't Wanna Go To Work", a song I regularly sang in the shower each morning back when I had to go to work. In fact, I still like to apply it to my life now, whenever possible.
The band was called The Happening Thang, and I think the songwriter was Andy Travers. Who knows where they are/he is now

It mentions Satan, male genitalia, and some bizarre acts with someones mom,

This was amazing. First rate playing and singing. Love the idea of doing a medley when considering 2 songs. Excellent job! I related to this one for a couple of reasons. My grandmother used to sing to me "I love coffee I love tea, I love Mark and Mark loves me". Until I heard this I didn't realize it came from an actual song. The other thing is that I used to be an elementary school Physical Education teacher for 13 years.

I'd researched that one too, as I liked the show & Nilsson's music. ...couldn't pull off the high notes though. You worked the key change well.
One of the actors(Komack- actor, producer, etc) also had a lot to do with some other interesting shows, which put a little more effort into the theme than most - Welcome Back, Cotter (John Sebastian) & Chico and the Man (Jose Feliciano), for example. I am not trying to learn those, but I hope someone is.

BTW - I wish u lived next door to me.

Randy, that is so cool! I've been away all day (and before that, all week), and just tuned in to see my uke got a shout-out .... and inspired you to join the Flea club! (Pabrizzer also plays a Tiki King Flea, and Tootler has a Flea too. I'm just the only one who doesn't have any non-Flea ukes. :))
Welcome to Flea world! Yours looks and sounds cool too. Is Hibiscus the color? I bought mine used.
Oh, gosh, FiL ... we totally forgot to visit Flea Market Music yesterday!
(We were at a folk festival 10 minutes from there for many days, and had formed some sort of vague plan to stop by there on our way out. And now, alas, we are back in NJ.)

We'll have to tune up to
"Our forum has fleas!"
I love my hibiscus Flea- it's my travel uke. Here's a picture of it - I'm singing with a friend.

Hells Yeah!!!!! You do seem to know me my friend. You read me like a book! I have almost done this song for several seasons - most recently Stories week but I got wrapped up in Duke Ellington. I have a wide range of musical tastes as you do and for me Rancid or almost any punk rock is right up there. Perfect use of the Thornton Rule. You are awesome as always and thanks for bringing some punk to this season!

I was working on this one as well... Trying to do it as a punk rock song. Brandon Cruz (Eddie) was the singer for Dr. Know in the mid eighties and also replaced Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys.
Punk rock trivia excitement!
In any event- punk rock version was impossible- and this is excellent. Glad ya beat me to it![

Nooo! Give it a shot, a punk version of this could be amazing!

Here is my TV Theme song. I laid down the baritone and vocals on sunday night. Monday morning I had three wisdom teeth pulled. Wisdom gone...Yes! Chipmunk cheeks...Yes! Taken a rest from UU....Hardly!

I tried to get this one in before anyone else did but RAB beat me to it by a few hours but they are quite different. I have used the bari, banjo uke, cajon, tambourine and two vocal tracks to get the sound of the original. The song is called "Im No Superman". I have set this song to the two day hospital visit of my grand daughters fractured skull rather than appear in the vid....although I am there in the hip replacement ex-ray:D

I think Im going to take a much needed nap now!

OK so jumping in again without having participated correctly these last several weeks, please forgive me. I read the theme, and had not a clue what to do...then the almighty shuffle gods played this for me in the car. It has a perfect mix of humor, pretentiousness, punk attitude and nonsense, as well as somehow saying something about coming of age or something. I don't know, it's Richard Hell. It's punk rock, it's literary, it's silly, it's New York City.
It's another one of those punk songs with a million barre chords in seemingly random order..here's a version made for a DC Cartoon show, complete with animation:

I knew as soon as I saw the theme I had a perfect song so I had to do it. Since I was a little girl I wanted to be Debbie Harry. She's my idol! Unfortunately singing ability and fantastic cheekbones never quite materialized for me. Still, I have a very soft spot in my heart for Blondie and particularly "Dreaming" and I think it suits me well as a theme song. I'm a dreamer through and through.

I chose the theme from the 1959 movie "A Summer Place" as my theme song.
I heard it a lot at home as a little kid in both the instrumental and vocal versions.
It's a catchy tune that still holds the record for most consecutive weeks at Number One on the charts for an instrumental.
For another generation, it was the slow "make-out" dance at the parties in the 1978 "Animal House" film.

The evocative lyrics by Mack Discant have stayed in my head for 55 years, they are below for those of you playing along at home.

http://youtu.be/n-N8Z-_oC9Q

[F] There's [Gm7] a [C7] summer [F] place
[Gm7] Where [C7] it may [F] rain or [Gm7] storm [C7]
Yet I'm [F] safe and [Gm7] warm [C7]
For with- [F] in [Gm7] that [C7] summer [F] place
[Gm7] Your [C7] arms reach [F] out to [Gm7] me
[C7] And my [F] heart is [Gm7] free [C7] from all [F] care
[Gm7] [C7] For it [F] knows [Gm7] [C7]

There are [Dm] no gloomy [Am] skies
[Gm7] When [F] seen through the [Am] eyes
[Gm7] Of [F] those who are [G7] blessed with [C7] love

And the sweet secret [F] of
[Gm7] A [C7] summer [F] place
[Gm7] Is [C7] that it's [F] any- [Gm7] where
[C7] When two [F] people [Gm7] share [C7]
All their [F] hopes [Gm7]
[C7] All their [F] dreams [Gm7]
[C7] All their [F] love [Gm7] [C7] [F] [F] [E] [Eb]

[D] There's [Em7] a [A7] summer [D] place [Em7]
Where [A7] it may [D] rain or [Em7] storm [A7]
Yet I'm [D] safe and [Em7] warm [A7]
In your [D] arms, [Em7] [A7] in your

in your [D] arms [Em7] [A7] [D]

Hi All, Bonus Time!

Here's the theme from one of the first Japanese animated shows to be seen in the US: Gigantor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AtSHp35xUg), however, I first heard it from the Dickies, whose version is very memorable (to me).
So it's cover of the Dickies version of the Gigantor theme (http://youtu.be/f662oVXRdJA)

While it is a simple tune, it's kind of a milestone for me, as I worked out the chords and lyrics entirely without the aid of playback, computer, or pen and paper, so I'm pretty happy about that.

It's been a while since I've gotten to do a seasons entry, but I wanted to get at least one in before I leave.

I picked this song because I travel a lot. I just got back from three years in Germany, I'm leaving in a little over two weeks for a year in Mongolia, and I've got my eyes set on Mozambique or Brazil after that. This of course means that I almost never have my friends and family close by--but even though i'm far away, I've still got their love to lean on. On that note, I made my sister sing this with me. She's also in transition and heading off to grad school, so it was nice to get to do this with her.

Thank you for the warm welcome to my first Season and to everyone who said something nice on my youtube video or here. I was really nervous putting it up and y'all just made me feel great! Thank you!!

Best Video Game ever! Left a few mistakes in because it's a hard song to play!
Wondeful!!! The Mario theme sounds like it was made for the uke. You nailed it :)

I love this. You and your sister look like youíre having so much together and you both have beautiful voices!!

Here's mine! I say a little bit about why this song in the intro.
I love how you learned this from a kid you were chaperoning. The teacher becomes the student huh?? :)

Funny because I hate the B word but otherwise it is 100% me. Only 2 takes this time, and only one entirely flubbed chord.
You have a lovely singing voice and one thatís perfect for this song! And great song choice :)

ok, this might not count as another bonus, because it's the theme tune of a character from a show, rather then the theme tune of a show

it's joxer the mighty's theme tune, from the tv series xena warrior princess
Haha this was amazing!!! I love the lip syncing.

Today a song that I've loved and been playing for a while popped into my head, so I decided to employ the Thornton rule as this song suits me much better. Going away for the weekend so this take was a bit rushed compared to my first but my tablet glitched on the first.

Hey guys.
RedPaul1, his cousin Keith and I met up this week for some beer and some ukes. And armed with a camera here come the results!
This is RedPaul1's entry for this week... "Photosynthesis" by Frank Turner...

This looks like it might be quite a raucous affair. I can identify with this song and it's a really cool choice for this week's theme. Well done boys.

... and here is my entry for this week from that same ale enhanced uke-jam... "Pin That Badge" by Little Barrie (I make badges for a living you see... anyway....)

p.s. The audio sync is WAY off on this one... no idea why! Tsk. Technology. Can't live with it, can't join the Seasons without it :)
I never heard this song before, but I quite like it. It seems like a natural choice given your profession! I especially liked the intro and outro bits as well as your singing. Thanks for sharing the table with us Mike!

Popeye The Sailor - BONUS!
I spent many a Saturday morning watching Popeye when I was little. The song is ingrained in our culture's DNA. It's an obvious choice for a Bonus entry.
Ever since Season 115, when Unluckymum did an amazing job of performing "Sea Cruise" in a minor key, I've been looking for songs that sound interesting when dropped to minor. I love Popeye in Am. I hope you like it, too.

At first I couldn't come up with anything for a theme song. I thought about writing a song called Garden Girl but I'm harvesting like crazy and don't have much time for doing anything else. So when this popped into my head I went with it. Smiles and Sunshine (who remembers Season 9?) First and only take (I took a quick break from picking currants and raspberries to record). My camera broke about a month ago so I've been working with a point and shoot camera - not ideal for sound. Then there's the wind and the plane overhead - sorry for the bad audio. Anyway - keep on smiling everybody!

Mine last night seemed to hang at 95% of processing but finished after about 5 minutes. I know that video is data-intensive, but I was surprised that a 3 minute video would take more than half an hour to upload.

Here's an original song I originally wrote on guitar a couple years back and spent some quality time this week transposing and rearranging for my sweet sweet new friend, Gigi. (That's what I named my ukulele since Gary Gill made her and I am Greg Golden- get it? Gigi. GG ;)

I didn't think of this as my theme really when I wrote it but it pretty much describes me as far as encompassing my philosophy and spirit as well as what I do to pay the bills (Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) with my musical flava thrown in there to complete the dish. Hope you all enjoy :)

http://youtu.be/Nmcsw8MjBSE

Lyrics:
Don't let them tell you that you're chronic or terminal you know that your body is divine
And if you get yourself right with the world you will feel it in your spirit and mind
Now if you're feelin kinda funky or strange I will throw some needles in you right now
Well I know that I cannot force you to drink but I hope you quench your thirst somehow

Acupunk da funk. Yeah baby, acupunk da funk and get funky.

Too many people holdin onto their illness even though it is time to let go of it
So many people wanna speed through life even though it is time to get slower with it
Too many people overthink what is wrong rather than appreciate what is right
So many people try to live in the dark even though we are all made of pure light

Acupunk da funk. Yeah baby, acupunk da funk and get funky.
Acupunk da funk. Yeah baby, acupunk da funk. Get funky acupunkin from the monk
Get a check-up on your pulse and show your tongue and get funky. Mmm hmm.

To all my people holdin on to your illness now-
Well I'm gonna love you until you ****in lay it down.
To all my people holdin on to your illness now-
Go on and lay it down- lay it down- lay it down. Give it up.
I'm gonna love you till you lay it down.
Acupunk da funk. Yeah, baby acupunk da funk. Yeah baby. Get funky.

Well here is my official entry, boy so many songs to choose from but i whittled it down to a song from my all time faverourite band the lyrics sort of sum me up, the eternal optimistic pessimist that i am :)

Welcome back Davey. You certainly don't seem out of practice! That was a delightful song and it makes a wonderful theme. It sounds like it was meant for the uke! I think I will learn that one. Thanks Buddy!

Yea! Nearly 48 hours later, after absolutely nothing that I did or tried, YouTube has finally been able to "Process" my video upload. (It's a long story!)

My choice for a theme song is Kate Wolf's, "Across The Great Divide" (1980). I had never heard this song before I began playing the ukulele, and heard it for the first time from a YouTube video cover of it by Ken Middleton and RussBuss415.

I began learning to play the ukulele at age 65, and this song really grabbed my heart and mind with both its beautiful melody and strong metaphorical lyrics. I have yet to hear another song that more accurately describes where I now find myself on life's path.

I wish I could play and sing it as well as Ken and Russell did; but nevertheless, it brings me great comfort and joy whenever I play it regardless of my level of ability.

I hope you enjoy it.

My dear GinnyT11, that is a most kind and generous welcome you extend to me. I hope I shall someday have the courage to take you up on it!

Great song. I like the way you strum/picked this. I remember in high school we had a smoking patio for students. It sounds outrageous now.

Cheers Mark, you've been a great host with your attentive and detailed comments on this Season as well as managing to Fraggle along with Sam !! Lol

My entry for Season 129. This is definitely very suitable for my theme song - fun, happy, while I'm singing La La La.

pabrizzer sent me a link to these guys some time ago and I've always loved this song, but only just put my mind around playing it - thanks pa.
