It all started one hot August day when I commented on Bird's Eye's "I Fell In Love With A Female Plumber". She posted back "thanks! they don't really write 'em like this anymore!". Well like my every haunting minute of my days the line made me think of a song, This time The Breakup Song. I posted a link back to Bird's Eye of The Breakup Song and she dug it as I knew she would. I was surprised to she' never heard of it. We were then in a race to see who would get it done first and she won on timing and style. I went ahead and made my video. In the back and forth conversing about our different styles of the one song it was decided that we should get other Seasonistas in on the fun. So here we are. Jump in. The song is fine. Show us your style with The Breakup Song.

I couldn't resist the dancing monkey icon. I'm in. However, as you will see, if you dare to watch, this is by no means a good video by any standards. For some reason the levels on the mic were way too high, and I'm not sure what's going on with my voice. In any event, it's a one take circus. Why I don't drink heavily from the moment I wake up is a mystery to me. You folks don't deserve this kind of torture, and if I had the time to do another take, I would.

On a side note; great song. Haven't heard it in years. Growing up near San Francisco, Greg Kihn was a big deal. I remember seeing him play at 49er games.

I didn't have much feeling for this song one way or the other until I played it ... and then I instantly fell in love with it. I'm not in general a big fan of songs about negative stuff like breakups, but this is such a fun song to play!

And it's worth repeating what Lynda said earlier, because it was funny and I don't want you to miss it, but also because it's true:
"The Breakup Song" isn't hard to do!

(In fact, it's super easy.)

So jump on in, the water's fine / fun.

JUST TO SAY - no time limit on this thread, post whenever you fancy, project ends when everyone who wants to do the song, has done it

Which could be, you know, forever, because there are new Seasonistas Every Single Week.

I'm an admirer and subscriber to your channel, Wendy. Your song selection is fun, and I enjoy your east coast sensibilities. I'm from Massachusetts.

Woohoo, a fan! ... thanks for letting me know. I'd probably keep doing this stuff anyway, because it's so much fun, but it's even more fun to share with other people who are having fun with it too. Like here! Love these spontaneous "parties" ... they are the best! Thanks to Lynda and Rex for hosting this one.

I lived in Cambridge, MA for four glorious years of my youth (yeah, those four). I spent way too long the other day researching for a band or artist from there who'd be fun to cover for Ryan's "homecoming" Season, but failed utterly. There are a lot from Boston (and none I could find that really inspired me anyway). The only one I could find with specifically Cambridge roots was (the band) Boston ... from my alma mater ... but I'm not feeling "More Than a Feeling". (Maybe I should do something played on "Car Talk"? :))

So, CoolKayaker, if you have any suggestions for me, please post them over at the Season 131 thread ... I don't want to sidetrack this one any further than I just did. I know I gotta be missing tons of great possibilities ... it's such a music town!

In other more important and relevant directions ... will you be joining us in "The Breakup Song"?

Carol, you too! We love audience, for sure. And here, participation is what it's all about!

Come join the party ... don't be a wallflower ... it's more fun out on the dance floor!

When the host of said current season joins in, I think it's all good.

Lynda described this song as a New Wave song. Personally I think it could have been a Rick Springfield song.

But I found a New Wave-y type effect on my Digitech wotsitmajig, and did this:

Not only was Ryan's vid fab and this thread a set of feline sleeping garments ... but that tab Ryan used made me realize I can use this song for his Season!

Greg Kihn made his first record in Berkeley, California, where I spent a glorious year getting a graduate degree and enjoying some fun in the sun ... it is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

I would never in a million years have known that or thought of this song, or known to think of it. Much gratitude to Lynda, Rex, and Ryan!

That said, I do hope you won't dally for too long, because we are at this very moment sharing some lovely comestibles and fine beverages, and some of us may have to go home eventually.

This has always struck me as an incongruously bouncy, happy-sounding song, as the lyrics are actually quite sad. I didn't want to just do the same thing as everyone else, so I assigned myself the task of sucking all the joy out of it...How'd I do?

i LOVE your take on this. pure genius - genius of inspiration, and genius of execution

i personally didn't think it was a sad song really, in the sense my take is, you can break up, even break up FOR GOOD, with someone, but who knows, after some reflection, a little time, maybe a lot of time, you might make up again. i imagined him staring into his drink and watching people dancing and getting sadder and sadder and then thinking oh you know she's not THAT much of a nightmare REALLY. better the devil you know etc etc, and going back home with chocolate and flowers and maybe a really cute soft toy, and bingo it's all back on again. Interesting song. Lyrics about breaking up and beat is up beat. But it's really about the songs in the song and how they don't write 'em like that anymore. So is he really bothered by the break up as much as the fact that songs aren't as good as they used to be?

Maybe it an ADHD song. He starts singing about the breakup then the songs distract him and he says "They don't write 'em like that anymore."

"Oww shinny."

ooh wow rex, deep and profound alert!

i think it's a song in praise of the power of music - it gets the people moving, it determines and responds to their movement, and of course it quite simply moves us - he has that one particular song in mind as the epitome of all that, and he feels the world has not seen its like again. yeah, the power of music, or in the case of our fab playlist, the power of uke-ing

and lol yeah maybe he just got distracted and lost his train of thought. he doesn't look 40 in the original video, but if he WAS 40 or over, then a. forgetting what you were saying mid-sentence comes with the territory as does b. thinking they don't make stuff like they used to - films, film stars, cars, songs, you name it

* obviously i don't know this from experience, i'm only 29 :uhoh: i just... er... read it somewhere *cough*

Okay, I hope you will forgive how off-topic and not-the-breakup-song this is, but it's too perfect:

http://youtu.be/bWJpwNI6fMw?t=49s
(In case the video doesn't start there, the moment in question is 0:49 (http://youtu.be/bWJpwNI6fMw?t=49s).)

FiL wrote that song months ago, before he knew me really all that well. Well, the other day, this actually happened. We were sitting around in the living room talking about something or other, when all of a sudden he noticed my attention had gone some place else. "Oh," said I, pointing out the glass door ... "squirrel." And then we both burst out laughing, because ... well ... we had just the week before made this video!

So, at first, I also thought (takes one to know one) that "The Breakup Song" was rather ADD-ish ... what does the chorus have to do with the verses, after all?

But then I had the same thought as Rex ... it's about the songs, yeah ... the songs aren't as good as they used to be. But isn't that also a metaphor? ... like he's thinking his best days have passed him by and he'll never have a relationship as good as that one was ever again.

ooh wow rex, deep and profound alert!

If I read the dates right, I think he was 31 or 32 when the song came out. But yeah, what would we know about such things? Since clearly none of us is anywhere near 40 yet, right? ADD though starts young. Not that I would know anything about that either. Wait, what did you say? Squirrel!

Rock out... Quietly?

Hey Birdseye! I just moved to Portland, Oregon and was hanging out with Ukuleledaddy who told me about this Breakup song link. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where Greg Kihn was absolutely huge. I have done two Greg Kihn covers for the seasons and did The breakup Song just before the original seasons started. The cheese factor is pretty high on this but it was a lot of fun to do. I did this video over two years ago

I hope you enjoy.

I'm calling L.Louden and D. Danner out.

But you've got to get your current season done as well. You see what happens when you put off your duties? They just keep piling up. This season 132 has no limit. That's a big pile...

"when [I] put off [my] duties?" ..... Actually, I took 4 days off to get away from this crazy addiction and return to a few of my "real world" duties with a little Virgina based travel to visit family and friends! :p Shame, shame on you for calling me out! (Of course, ya'll know I loved it.) I may have to limit SOTU 132 to only one song so I can get the "BS" done, too. :p

Taking a break from working on my SOTU 132 and swinging by here to drop off "The BS." I've been struggling with this because I couldn't make up my mind whether to do it regular speed (or thereabouts) or to try it slowwww. So; to delay no longer, I tried both. Because this is a SOTU "Party" thread; I figured that would be O.K., especially since I did them back-to-back. (Critical comments and comparison of my fast vs slow covers are both welcome and solicited!)

I'm really sorry about this. Every time I try to remember "The Breakup Song" refrain, "uh-uh-uh uh-uh uh-uh-uh", this other refrain keeps running through my head instead.

I'm sure it doesn't mean anything ... right?

Nevertheless, it grabbed me again this morning after commenting on the last few BS contributions ... and I just couldn't help myself.

Please forgive me.

I'm late to the party, here's my take on it. couldn't decide between fingerpicking, open chords, or barr, so I used all three. I've listened to most of the playlist and I'm really impressed , you folks are so clever[and talented]

There is no such thing as left-over microbrew beer.

It is merely beer that has yet to be used.

well that's ok, then

and very profound

very much the "glass half full" approach to life

unless of course ceejay or i are about in which case we'll empty that glass sooner than you can say "hey don't steal my beer!"

I'm just starting my first forays into 'proper' beer actually. Used to just drink Lager and Cider but I've found craft ales get me pissed much quicker and much cheaper. Still on the wimpy end of the scale though. Had an Old Golden Hen last night and even that was a bit much.

Oh well, guess it means I need to keep practising!

ooh yum - is it a bit nutty?

not mad - nutty TASTING

my faves, apart from the dark rich malty deliciousness that is old and peculier

are really zesty, lemony ales - young's london gold is delish, i also like spitfire (they call it the BOTTLE of britain - groan! but lol too!)
