Livestreams, jams, lessons, and more from Ukulele Underground
Not sure where else to make this correction, but I was just looking at the UU homepage post of the winning video and it refers to "Land of Confusion" as a Disturbed song. I think Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins might have something to say about that. It's a GENESIS song!!!! Great job on the video though! Nice version.
Hey UUers! March is here and it's a great day for an episode of Uke Lessons! Uke Lesson 27 - Nothin' On You B.o.B is one of the most promising young talents to come along in awhile & if you haven't checked out his stuff yet, do. Overall, a pretty simple and straightforward lesson, but if you need a little extra help with the picking part, these Uke Minutes should help: C String Bass Technique (for the finger picking. Especially the pinky-anchoring part.) Pinky Exercises (for when you need to move that pinky around!) Got questions, comments, thoughts, ideas, perspectives on the new age of Hip Hop, suggestions on what Aldrine can do to rap better?? Post them all below!
Hello all you awesome Children of the Underground! June is here - new Uke Lesson commin at ya! Uke Lesson 18 - Gives You Hell Play-Along coming soon. Check out the Verse Pattern and Bridge Pattern and tell us what you think. In those sections, we used a very Guitar-Hero-esque method of imparting fingerpicking info - Did it make sense to you? Was it confusing? hard to follow? Also if you've got questions, comments, suggestions, favorite words - post them here! Woot.
Hey UUers! This week's episode of Uke Minutes online and ready to be mastered! Uke Minutes 79 - Triplets Try them out and let us know what you think! Questions, comments, suggestions, thoughts, interesting applications for triplets, anecdotes about multiple births - post them all below!
Hey UUers! Episode 78 is up and runnin'! Uke Minutes 78 - Pinky Exercises Try it out and let us know what you think! This one will help out a lot with finger strength and dexterity & you'll definitely notice it when you're doing instrumental pickings where you use your pinky finger often. Comments, questions, helpful hints, success stories, before & after pics? Post them all below!
Hey UUers - it's Saturday & a new episode of Uke Minutes is up! Uke Minutes 77 - Strum Picking (with Harmony) We've done episodes on Strum Picking and Harmony (1 , 2), but here's your chance to do them both at the same time! Questions, comments, musings, suggestions for even more alternatives to the thumb mute? Post them below!
Hey people of the Underground! October's episode of Uke Lessons is here - one day early! Uke Lesson 22 - True We were feeling a little 80s-ish this month and this is what came of it. Check it out, and if you have questions, suggestions, comments about Aldrine's tie-dye shirt, more examples of "True" in pop culture, etc., please post them below! We just arrived in California for the first stop on the UU Tour, so be sure to come by and see us!
Hey UUers! Another episode of Uke Minutes locked and loaded: Uke Minutes 76 - Alternate Chord Position Exercises Try it out with different chord inversions or any chord change that you like to familiarize yourself with the fretboard or tighten up those changes! Another very helpful resource for finding alternative chord positions is www.4stringchords.com (be sure to click on the ukulele before you start), which allows you to select the chord name AND fret that you want to start on. We also tried out a new audio setup on this, and we still need to figure out the optimal settings, but the ukulele came through a lot clearer, don't you think? Questions, comments, ideas, helpful hints, interesting thoughts about chord inversions...
Hey UUers! Took me awhile, but Uke Minutes 75 is up! (wow, can you believe it, we're at #75 already!?) Uke Minutes 75 - Using Thumb Picks Check it out and if you've got questions, comments, ruminations, thumb-pick experiences you'd like to share, lists of uke players that use thumb picks, etc. - Post them below! Booyaka.
Hey UUers! Another fresh ep. of Uke Minutes waiting for you on the front page! Uke Minutes 74 - Using Flat Picks The music store that we went to get picks from didn't have any felt picks in stock, but they did have rubber and nylon. Aldrine chose to use the nylon one for some reason, which gives a harsher sound than most of you are probably used to on the uke. So it is. Questions, comments, thoughts, personal pick preferences, pick horror stories/triumphs, opinions about plaid flannel? Post them below!
Hey UUers! Today is Saturday and that means another episode of Uke Minutes! Uke Minutes 73 - Slack Key Tuning In this episode, Aldrine shows one of the easiest and most common open tunings for ukulele (Drop G); but there are many, many other Slack Key tunings out there. Play around with this one for now, see what else you can do (can you figure out minor and seventh chord shapes?? :D), and let us know what you get! Questions, comments, suggestions, thoughts, Christmas wishes? Post them all below!
I did a Google of my UU username and was very surprised to see that many of the videos I have uploaded on YouTube are also on other web sites, specifically, web sites where ads are displayed. One of my videos, "Plywood Jesus", is on a website dedicated to the Huntington, West Virginia, area. This particular site has all types of ads listing restaurants and other businesses in the Huntington, West Virginia, area. So, I guess someone figured out how to make money off of the videos we post on YouTube but we don't get in on any of that action... I don't really care as I assume I gave YouTube the right to have my videos used in this manner when I joined up with YouTube (the small print somewhere must have said that somewhere)...
Hey everybody! The new ep. of Uke Minutes is up: Uke Minutes 65 - A&C String Harmony The pattern that Aldrine teaches in this one works pretty well for the scales A through C# (plus or minus, depending on how many frets you have), but you really have to play around with it to get a good understanding of what it can do. By this same method, you can also figure out harmony on other strings as well! Got questions, comments, personal anecdotes, harmony jokes, interesting facts, etc - post them below!
Awesome lesson dig the song!!!!! So I was trying to follow along and tab the solo part out... Hey People of the Underground! It's another sweet episode of Uke Minutes: Uke Minutes 72 - Musical Direction II This time Dominator goes over D.S. and D.C. al Coda & al Fine. Pretty simple stuff, but if it sounds like latin (or maybe Italian?) to you, check out the video for the explanations. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Other tab notations that you have no idea what they mean? Post them below and we'll help you out!
Hey UUers - Uke Minutes 71 locked & loaded: Uke Minutes 71 - Musical Direction Mostly referring to tabs, but this stuff applies to all sheet music. Got questions, suggestions, thoughts, ideas, comments, compliments regarding Dominator and his awesomeness - post them all below!
Hey Everyone! This week's episode of Uke Minutes is up: Uke Minutes 70 - The Process of Working with Tabs This episode kind of serves as an introduction to coming episodes which will explain more tab/musical notation and direction, because it really is important to know what you need to do with a tab, even before you pick up your ukulele. Thoughts, ideas, questions, comments, more videos from Dominator's vacation to Kauai, ways that you approach figuring out a tab, etc. - post them below!
Hey people of the Underground! It's Uke Minutes time - Uke Minutes 68 - Rhythm & Timing Also posted was the video for Part 2 of UU Tour 2009 (click here if you missed Part 1)! Featuring Deach, Victoria Vox, The U.K.E. from Paris, Michael Wagner, and UUers galore! But I digress ... if you've got questions, thoughts, ideas, comments, etc. about rhythm, timing, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, or any notes whatsoever, post them below!
on many of our UU member videos and collabs, there are split screens and such for members to sing perform together or just to spice up their own videos. Some help with what program you use would be great Much love
