Mainland Ukes - are they really that good?

It’s possible to search bills of lading to see which companies import things from other countries. Ohana imports their musical instruments from Haupttonart Industrial in China. Mainland orders from the same company, but the last documented order was in 2018. Mike could be purchasing ukes via a...

    Questions answered? Kalas' new release.

From a participant’s point of view: YT has the advantage over FB — no account is necessary. YT has the advantage over Zoom — it works in a browser, older ones at that. But, most of us have used it recently. However, if you don’t currently have a YT creator’s account, then there is that extra...

    Coffeehouse MC Tips, Please.

Okay, I think I’ve got a plan. Between acts I’ll ask for words, then at the end read back a Mad Lib. I’ll write up some custom stories that will work for the particular audience. This coffeehouse will take place over 3-4 nights. We usually have the same set of performers year after year, but...

    Coffeehouse MC Tips, Please.

I volunteered to MC a coffeehouse later this year. I’m not an extrovert by any stretch of the imagination, but this will be with people I mostly know well, and they create a very supportive atmosphere for performers, both experienced and novice. What I need is some filler material between acts...

Why are people so afraid of Music Theory?

Very nice! You’ve been waiting for just the right time to repost this.

    Dinky side dots

I wish I could do without them, but above the 5th fret my aim is terrible.

    Dinky side dots

Seems like a good excuse to order more strings as well!

    Dinky side dots

I’ve got this one ukulele that does not have fret markings — it only has quite small white side dots. Normally, this would be fine, except the wood isn’t very dark so they are quite hard to see in low light conditions. I’ve seen these stick on markers, some even glow in the dark, but I’m a bit...

What did you do today? Anything hobby-related.

Purchased my first foot pedal, a tuner.

Under discussion Create a place to discuss strings (Was: String Theory)

To me, FAQs always seem dry and static. There might be a better title for the board: Going Deeper, Technical Discussions, Know Your Ukulele. A title that draws people in.

I’d find them useful. As long as we have a curated list of tags and not let new ones be created by any one for any reason, then it would not seem so silly.

Tags would be a new feature. Presumably it already exists and would just need to be enabled by one of the site admins.

What might be more convenient is adding tags. Tags make it possible to gather all threads on a topic together without having to add a new board for each one. Offhand I can think of a few topics that come up regularly — strings, tonewoods, tuners, etc, — that don’t merit their own board.

Under discussion A Uke Challenges Board?

What kind of challenges (and responses) do you have in mind? I could see myself attempting a challenge, e.g. sight reading a particular tune, but I’m unlikely to post a video of me doing so.

First Uke help: Tenor or Super Tenor?

You are hearing different opinions about nut width here in this thread. With the exception of my family heirlooms, I’ve sold off all my narrow nut ukes and swapped them out with ones with 37-38 mm nuts. To me they are easier to play — my finger tips must be relatively wide. If you think you’d...

    Daughter's baritone uke strings

I do that on occasion, too. Occasionally I end up with a set of duds, which is interesting, but not ever hoped for.

Distressed finishes: getting out of hand?

Whatever SUS wants to sell is their business, literally — just as long as this monstrosity doesn’t show up on Alex’s Top 10 Ukuleles of 2023 YouTube video.

Why are people so afraid of Music Theory?

Just my 2 cents on this topic. I played trombone starting in 5th grade - and by the time I graduated HS, I was a fairly good trombonist. I had a good ear and could play fairly complex music in any key. But despite having plenty of musical knowledge, I did not know a thing about music theory...
