Sam Ash is the 3rd-party seller via newegg, as such there are more photos on the product page on the Sam Ash web site:

It appears that this one has a 12-fret body join, not sure if that is standard on bass ukes, or if it matters much.

Also to note in the description on both sites, that this is fretless, and that might matter to some people either way.

In any case, this seems like a very good price for what it is.

I'm surprised it doesn't have an access panel on the back to make changing strings easier, all the Chinese made bass ukes I've seen from Rondo and Kala have one.

Good point. I guess this would be a good use of the dremel since no way in Hades I'd want to fish strings thru the soundhole.

I just hate that.

Maybe that's why the price is so low? (manufacturing error)

I finally gave up on a custom bass uke I had made by Bruce Wei in Vietnam because I neglected to request a panel on the back, what a major pain to change strings through the sound hole. I decided to buy a Rondo Hadean when I saw their limited availability walnut cutaway with access panel for $180.

Would the Rondo Hadean be a good uke bass to start on? Where did you purchase it? Was it set up or was it necessary to have it done after purchasing?

Yes, the Rondo is a good choice. www.Rondomusic.com is the link, then in the search box type; bass uke. They have acoustic and solid body models, 21 or 24 inch scale, depending on availability. You could have a setup done, but the solid body models have an adjustable bridge that you can easily lower if necessary, the acoustic does not so if you want to lower the action, the saddle would have to be sanded down.

The Aquila cream colored strings are fine to start, I do prefer the black Road Toad Pahoehoe that come with the Kala U-bass, but they're a pain to install and take a longer time to settle in, but they are very smooth, where the Aquila are sticky.

Thanks for your response. I currently play tenor ukes, so would you suggest the 21 or 24 inch scale. And would you suggest one with frets or fretless. I am leaning toward an acoustic one rather than a solid body.

I only play tenor uke, having come from guitar for almost 50 years, and I have basses that are 21, 22, 23 and 24, but for me the sweet spot is 23, though I play them all without a big problem. I had a fretless, which was fine, but I prefer fretted. The general consensus is with these sub-short scale, that the intonation at the 12th fret is iffy, so having fretless allows you to find the correct intonation along the fret board since it's more difficult to control that in a setup.
