That's a mic. DPA 4099G.
I tend to move around when I play, I'm not partial to the sound of pickups, and I couldn't bear the thought of drilling a hole in my schmancy uke, so that's what I ended up with. It has a little ratchety clip dingus that holds it on the instrument without sticky stuff or doing anything permanent.
More honestly, it's an outward symptom of a kind of UAS thing, except with microphones.
FWIW I love it; it works well playing live too.
