made my nut a little too thick

I got some Koolao golds and tried thickening the nut with a small nail file. I tried too hard and its a tiny bit too thick and theres a part at the bottom that is uneven too...
is it okay if the nut is a little thick? because part of my buzzing problem seems to come from the uneven bottom of the nut slot too, so i was thinking of getting a smaller file to make it even.

Do you mean that you were trying to widen the nut slot and made it too wide? If so, and you want to correct it, you can carefully fill in the slot with CA glue and star over again.

The nut slot should be smooth on the bottom and angle down towards the tuners so that the face of the nut facing the fingerboard and bridge is a well defined edge or small flat surface. I don't think having the nut slot too wide is going to hurt you much. It certainly is not optimal. Too deep is another story and that will cause buzzing on open strings.

It's funny how those nut and saddle fixes that look so simple before you do them require expertise once they're done. Youtube makes us think we're all expert luthiers. I used to make a good portion of my living off people who thought they could tune or repair their own pianos (and could have saved half of their money, and all the trouble, if they had called me first).
