Hi everyone, a

Appreciate your thoughts as I am a noob with regards to this. Can anyone with experience on this share the pros and cons of each? Are they both active pickups?

Thanks

Here is a video from HMS comparing all their pickups. Both are active and have their advantages. I have both pick up's installed on different ukes but I personally prefer the Five.0 for the sound and volume knob.

There are different versions of both. I have a Misi with a volume control and one without. Ditto the Baggs 5.0.

For convenience, I like the Misi. I hate having to fumble around trying to change the battery on the Baggs pickups.

I have Misi pick-ups in 3 of my 4 ukuleles. Like Kenn2018, I also hate messing with an internal battery. The Misi is an easy 60 second plug-in every once in awhile. I think I recharge my 2 most used ukes about once a month. I've never had one go dead during a performance, but I carry an extra charger in my gear bag just in case I need to do a quick recharge out in public. Since the Misi is an active pick-up, I don't have to use a pre-amp when I plug in to the PA sound system at church (play 2 hours every Sunday). The only other thing I use with my church set up is a Boss tuner pedal. It acts as my on-off switch as well as a tuner. I also plug in to a Roland AC-33 portable acoustic amp for group and public play.

As far as sound goes, I've only used Misi, so I don't have a comparison to the LR Baggs. I have no complaints with the Misi. I will say that my Cocobolo uke sounds better through the Roland amp, and my aNueNue Moonbird sounds better through the church PA sound system. I think that's just a difference in the ukuleles, not in the pick-up.

3 of us use the MISI, and two of us use the LR Baggs. The one advantage the Baggs has is volume control. The one disadvantage is batteries.
With my MISI, I must use a pre-amp with our Yamaha sound system. With the smaller Fender PA we have, I can go direct. Go figure.

I have 2 Blackbird Claras with Misi pickups and they have been my performance and travel ukes for many years now. I perform with a Roland Cube Street EX and can always find the sound I'm looking for in different venues with the Misi & the Roland.

Not having to worry about batteries (Are they dead? Did I bring a spare?) is a huge load off my mind. Just plug the Misi in for 60 seconds then go play! No fuss, no muss, and way faster than changing batteries.

I'm a big fan of where Misi is taking the market with powered pickups.

That's interesting that you have to use a pre-amp with your sound system. When I first started playing at church, I wondered if I would need a pre-amp, but it turned out that I didn't. I've plugged in directly to the sound systems at two local uke festival stages without a problem. Must be a difference in the type of sound system??? My uke group has talked about investing in a smaller portable sound board of some sort to use for our public performances, but we haven't gotten one yet.

On the subject of batteries...... my Boss tuner pedal is battery operated. I try to change the battery every other month on a schedule, but sometimes forget. Like last Sunday when we get up to play two songs midway through the church service, and I look down & the pedal appears to be dead. Ugh. I'm still good to play, but I just can't use the pedal to mute my ukulele.

Thank you all for your inputs. Seems like a Misi is more convenient and probably more environment friendly as well.

Well, I don’t have any experience playing either, -just yet, I just ordered the MiSi because I like the idea of fewer wires dangling around inside the uke. In addition, I understand it uses the same pick-up “wire” up as the Baggs. With fewer wires and fewer electrical connections I surmise that there will be more reliability in the connections as well. I’m not an electrician and I don’t play one on TV! So, that’s just a little “M.A.S.”(male answer syndrome.)!! Don’t hold me to that presumption!

I have an LR baggs WITH a MiSi. It’s pretty nifty, keeps the tone of the Baggs with the ease of the MiSi. The Uke Republic was where I got it installed, but the details can be found HERE.

Yes.....the Misi Trio pick-up uses the LR Baggs under saddle wire.

2 of my 3 ukes with the Misi pick-up were installed at the time of purchase by HMS (Moonbird) and Cocobolo. I purchased a Misi Trio pick-up online and had it installed in my older model (2006) KoAloha by the technician at my local acoustic guitar/ukulele shop. He did a good job, but I was a little nervous about having it installed locally, and not by a known ukulele only shop or builder.

I wonder about the same thing. I can pay over $100 for a name brand, or I can pay $10 for a generic. All you get is a thin disk(s), wire, and a socket. How can "Quality" enter into this?

I have a misi. Sound is crystal clear. Using something like the LR Baggs DI with it will give you greater control over dynamic range. This is what I use with it:

Does this setup still have the misi sound hole mic?

I have a MiSi in one of my Cocobolos, and one of the Ohanas has a Misi, and one has an L.R. Baggs 5.0.

I think my other ukes with pickups are all passive - I know the Donaldson has a K&K Twinspot. Not sure about the Risa stick.

I can pretty much plug them all in direct to the JBL Ion One, but I use a Passive DI on everything, especially since some of the amps I've plugged into have a wicked ground hum; the DI can take care of that, and helps keep the levels pretty much standard.
