Of course you can. It has been a frustration of mine with the ukulele community that it pigeon-holes itself into island-strumming everything into musak with a reggae beat. The ukulele is an instrument and it can play anything you want just like other instruments

I totally agree with you. The ukulele is a wonderfully expressive instrument for classical or fingerstyle.

I am sure we can all learn some Tom Waits tunes! Plenty of his have some darker elements

I play a couple of Tom Waits tunes: "God's away on Business" comes to mind.
