Just a tad earlier than usual, I need to be out for a while tonight. Happy Halloween!

Season 193: Harry’s Halloween Hootenanny!

Trick or Treat season is upon us! This week, let’s do songs fit for Halloween!

Use your imagination! The Thornton Rule applies so if you think your song could be a Halloween song, you’re right!

Originals welcome and encouraged! Or, you could take a song not normally associated with Halloween hijinks, and do it in a minor key, or ironically, or in a costume! You get the idea!

We will select three winners for this week, they will all be picked at random. The prizes are 9-packs of Gnarly Teeth from Archie McPhee. It’s the Halloween accessory that you can use year-round!

There’s no limit to the number of entries you can make, but make sure that your entry is new for this Season! State or write the Season number in your video.

Multitracking and collaborations are fine, as long as your ukulele is prominent.

The contest starts midnight Hawaii time, runs for eight days, as usual. Until then, keep the Season 192 Video Game songs coming!

Oh man, What a fantastic OP video! How do you pull off all the trickery. Its fantastic. Great theme and prizes too Randy.

Oh, yay ... I was hoping for a Halloween theme! Uke On! duo just learned a bunch of Halloween songs for last weekend's pumpkin train gig ... and we have not yet video'd any of them. (Except our first rehearsal of ... yes, on two ukuleles ... "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", which we did for southern rock week. But we are going to redo that one now that we've improved upon it!)

I've had an idea for a song buzzing around in my head for a while now that will fit this week's theme. Maybe this is the spur I need to sit down and write it.

A Halloween song I wrote way back in the 80s.

I was checking out the fiction in the local bookstore
When like a breath of night jasmine she breezed through the door
She was dressed all in black and wore a silver star on a chain

She walked right back to astrology
And selected a book by Edgar Cayce
And I knew right then I had to learn her name

Well I walked to the shelf and I picked up a book
On how to master the evil eye look
And she started to speak without even looking up

She said, Karmically you've been looking for me
To help balance out the bad energy
And you're wondering if we've ever met before

Let me tell you that we are cosmic mates
And now that I've found you, before it's too late
Come with me and I'll teach you what you want to learn

So I followed that lady into the night
I was afraid if I let her out of my sight
She would disappear like a ghost in the breaking dawn

She's my witch love
On the wings of the night
She comes flying
Like a phantom from the light
Witch love every word is a magic spell
Witch love
With mysterious eyes
She can see past
All the secrets and the lies
Witch love
Sweet enchantments that I can't dispel

Her eyes are like dark reflective pools
She walks like an Empress and I feel like the Fool
Her hair dances in the wind like raven's wings

She carries an antique athame
When she works her magic she's skyclad and free
My love's a witch and she's got me under her spell

So don't give me no stories about ugly old hags
Who traded their souls for some tricks in a bag
Cuz my love's a witch and she's not like that at all

I don't even care about her strange-looking shadow
I'm not bothered by the screech owl outside her window
And I don't mind how she laughs when the moon is full

She's my witch love
On the wings of the night
She comes flying
Like a phantom from the light
Witch love every word is a magic spell
Witch love
With mysterious eyes
She can see past
All the secrets and the lies
Witch love
She floats like a leaf through the air
Witch love
She wears poisonous flowers in her hair

Witch love

I was going to do my favourite of my Halloween songs - but then I realised that I had already done it for a previous Halloween season.

Then inspiration suddenly hit me and I sat down, wrote this song, and then recorded it; all in about an hour flat! Hope you like it.

Lyrics now in the youtube description section.

I feel that I should warn everyone that this is my favorite time of year. We finally got some cool, rainy weather and I am on vacation all week. You all may get tired of me before the week is over.

I never could get the timing right on the melodica part, but this is one of those songs that I didn't want to sink a lot of time into because I don't see how I would ever do it again.

Ronnie Lane's song about a bloke who appears to be living with a witch. It's the cat I feel sorry for.

I hate Halloween

Listen I really do hate Halloween, for the hypocrisy of it.

Most of the year we try to protect our children from all sorts of evil.
We make sure the video games they play are not violent or bloodthirsty.
We try to control the shows they watch on TV, and don't allow them to watch
beyond the 9 o'clock watershed. We put parental control on their internet access.
We warn them about chat rooms. We shepherd them back and forth to school.
We try to nurture and protect them. If they have nightmares we comfort them,
and reassure them there are no bogeymen under the bed, and no killers in the closet.

Yet on Halloween we turn everything on its head and most things that we
have forbidden, for one night we now sanction.

The most terrifying thing I ever experienced as a child was on halloween, my grandmother
had hung some decorations outside the bedroom window, and the wind was bashing them
against the window pane. I was convinced that something was trying to get into the room to get me.
Children have such impressionable minds, and that is why we try to protect them and provide a safe
environment for them to grow up in... except on Halloween when we through our principles to the wind
and all hell is let loose.

A silly Halloween song. And my first attempt at writing something!

And just in case you're interested (why would you be?!), that Halloween 'tinsel' has given me a rash. Oh how I suffer for my art.

During the 90s I was part of a big group of fans of H.P. Lovecraft who wrote short stories and poetry inspired by his work, mostly just for our own and each other's enjoyment. It was kind of like what we do here, except that it was for poems and short fiction instead of music, and the theme was always...HORROR!!!. This is one of the poems I wrote back then, which I thought I'd try to set to music.

The Hill

Clawing moonlight rakes across the land
Where ragged treetops hide against the hill,
And darkness falling, gathers moist and chill
On shadows standing hand in spectral hand.

No simple ghostly phantom of the night
Can further wail the note of ling'ring dread
Once howled by ghoulish things amidst the dead
That restive sleep within this woody blight.

Nothing moves, where once there proudly stood
Majestic towering oaks and flowers fair,
For a secret strangeness lingers in the air
And sunlight shuns the sullen, dusky wood.

No creature wild will walk the weedy trail
That winds among the gnarly, stunted trees,
For noisome vapors sometime stain the breeze
And waft unwelcome down into the vale.

Something happened, one grim sunless day
Of which the country folk refuse to speak;
Now ghastly glimmers 'tween rough headstones peek--
And more than this, I cannot--will not--say.
