Some of you know I’m an unabashed Chuck Brodsky fan so I couldn’t resist this little ditty which has a sparrow, cows, pigs, chickens and one horny bull in it. ‘Nuff said. I am trying out some new software which allows me to do the whole thing in my iPad which speeds things up considerably.

I record with Movie Pro and my Apogee mic then import the resulting video into Luma Fusion and edit. Then I export the audio only to Final Touch and do some audio adjustments and adjust levels there then export that back to Luma Fusion for the final reader and direct upload to YouTube.

I’m curious how it sounds on your end…

Not only do crocodiles rock but so do little blue parakeets. Don’t worry. It’s OK to hold them this way when they are first being trained. Unless, of course, they really seem to hate it then that would be kind of cruel.

The last one for this week... I suspect.... Unless my muse has other ideas.

This one is a true shanty. The previous one is a Sea Song. The difference? Shanties were work songs with a rhythm that helped coordinate work. The lead singer (the Shantyman) usually sang a line (often telling a story, as here) and then the crew joined in the chorus while pulling on the rope, turning the capstan, or whatever else the shanty had been designed to facilitate. They would then rest a moment while the shantyman sang the next line.

In 1985, I had the honour to sing alongside Stan Hugill, who was the last living professional shantyman (retired) and have him join in the choruses of one of my shanties..

Songs which were not designed with this structure are usually referred to as forecastle songs. The Fo'csle being the place where the off duty men gathered to socialise. Here songs would be sung for their entertainment value. My previous song is more of a fo'csle song than a shanty.

This one is based on a true episode in which a seal hunting crew were shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and how they fared next is told in the shanty.
