I use Chalmers' Ukulele in the Classroom (cowritten with James Hill) series to teach playing the uke with music notation. The books are available in C6 or D6 tuning. He was decorated by the Queen for his service as a music educator!!
When I started playing, the music books with uke chords told you what tuning to use, it was either GCEA, ADF#B and BbEbGC.

We nippers at Bembridge School kept to ADF#B as the standard tuning. I think personally that GCEA is a dull tuning, and horrified after returning from my uke sabbattical to find it is now the standard.

But you can't fight town hall and when all the song sheets and books are written for that tuning !

Both of the songs I did this week have lyrics which I omitted. Here are sample verses:

Separation Blues - Patrick Sky

I'm in the kitchen, my baby's in the hall
I'm in the kitchen, my baby's in the hall
I'm in the kitchen, my baby's in the hall
She won't talk to me at all

You know we've got. . .got the Separation Blues.

Keep Your Hands Off Her - Huddie Leadbetter (aka Lead Belly)

She's a heavy hipped woman; she's got those great big legs
Yeah my heavy hipped woman's got those great big legs
Got a heavy hipped woman with great big legs
Walks like she's walkin' on soft boiled eggs

Keep your hands off her - She don't belong to you.

You’ll be sorely missed, Jim!
I’ll be joining late, but should make it about half way through.

Here are the lyrics to the song I sang today. I’m re-thinking the title now though 😂 open to suggestions. It’s a little cheesy because I was trying to rhyme (demented might be a bit extreme, for instance, and I likely wouldn’t actually hold your hand, unless asked) but aside from minor bits like that, every word is true. The water was a large, inground swimming pool, and I was stung almost a dozen times.

“I don’t run unless I’m chased”
Is something I’ve often said
But the buzzing’s growing louder
And now they’re circling ‘round my head

Why did I let Bobby
Start to lead us off the trail
Now we’ve kicked a nest
And they outmaneuver every limb I try to flail

Barreling through brush and branches
At speeds I’d never dreamed
Of and sprinting down the path
Until we’d neared the end, it seemed

But now we’ve cleared the woods
And they still haven’t relented
Chased us clear into the yard
Where I start to feel demented

As I balance on the precipice
Of fearful indecision
Another one flies at me
Stinger aimed with great precision

So I plunged into the water
With my shoes on, fully clothed
And the cloud of yellow jackets
Drifted above me as I dove

Some had crawled into my jeans
Others had tangled in my hair
But they must not like the water
Finally ending my despair

So if you wonder, when we’re hiking
Why I’ll never dare to stand
Beyond the clearly marked and maintained
Trails, I’ll take you by the hand

And say

“I don’t really want to run today”
Memories stinging from the past
“I don’t run unless I’m chased
But damn, those suckers sure fly fast”

Said, I don’t run unless I’m chased
But damn, those suckers sure fly fast

The "favorite words" theme today had me thinking of this Dr. Demento classic:

It was threatened that we'd have a second go-around tonight with so few of us there. As that didn't happen, and it fits in with what the last thing we talked about...

I recorded the new bit of nerd-folk that I played at this week's session.
