SOTU 537 – “Hell Hath No Fury Like a Woman Scorned.”

Greetings, fellow Seasonistas! The contrast of a happy little instrument like the ukulele playing a vengeful tune is just too rich for words. Therefore, this week’s theme is about angry women who’re fed up, who ain’t gonna take it anymore, and they’re fixin’ to give you an earful about it.

Some awesome songs come readily to mind, from Broadway to Country to Disco to some truly pissed off more contemporary stuff. I’m sure you can think of some doozies. Let that venom flow.

So here are the week’s parameters:
  • The video must be newly recorded for this Season. Rob can submit earlier recordings.
  • The video must say that it is for SOTU 537 - “Hell Hath No Fury.”
  • The ukulele must be prominent. Other instruments are welcome but the uke must be front and center.
  • Original songs are always welcome. (Hello, Voran, are you listening? This Season has you written all over it!) If you do choose to submit an original song, please post the lyrics so we can all read them.
  • Videos must be posted to this thread. But not before midnight tonight, Hawaiian time, in keeping with tradition. (And remember, Season 536 is still in play!)
  • The Season lasts for 8 days, and ends at midnight Hawaiian time on Sunday night, June 5th.
  • There is no limit to the number of videos you can submit. Let this be cathartic!
The playlist link is: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOE-LSahSNE7_KtHpG2zDYODcXwTJ0xVg

The prize will be something small and uke-themed that can be shipped internationally with ease. Please invite other players to join in; the more the merrier.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN.

Yeah, I gotta a woman who lives on the hill..oh, wrong song. Mine, although never scorned, is a bit pissed off lately, sounds like some good new original song fodder! 😁

The best line in the Elvis movie: "Follow That Dream"

Looking forward to what this generates. I love the Seasonistas!

I suggest Ila should listen to all entries in a cool room of 0 deg C or 32 deg F. Revenge in a song is best listened to cold!

But for the origin of the line: "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" comes from the 1697 tragedy The Mourning Bride by the English playwright William Congreve.

Based my cover more on writer Tom T Hall's demo that is on youtube. The hit was of course by Jeannie C Riley - featuring a couple of key changes...ignored by me. Fun song. Bit of trivia " the day my mama socked it to the Harper Valley PTA" was not Tom's lyric. Added by I think the producer during Jeannie's recording session. I guess it was a phase that was part of the zeitgeist due to the " sock it to me" catch phrase of the TV hit "Laugh In" at the time. Tom's line was "The day my mama broke up the Harper Valley PTA ". I think "socked it to" is a pretty good change.
Thanks for the fine idea Ila.

Hell hath no fury like two girls who murder an abusive husband and then dispose of the body ...
This song, made famous by The Dixie Chicks, also has some of the best and most memorable lyrics ever written ...

"You're No Good", written by Clint Ballard, and made popular by Dee Dee Warwick and Linda Ronstadt, for concert ukulele with singing, overdubs of electric bass, secondary vocal, and tenor ukulele. Thanks for hosting Ila (and for suggesting this tune, which I'd sort of forgotten)!

Long about an hour before sunrise
She drags his body down to the edge of the swollen river
Wrapped in a red velvet curtain stolen from the movie theater where she works.
Quiet as a whisper, under the stanchions of a washed-out bridge she cuts him loose
And watches as the flood waters spin him around once, then carry him away.
Then she removes the golden ring upon her fingerA nd she throws it in.
And I wonder; Baby why don't you cry? Baby why don't you Baby why don't you cry?

Three days later in a bar in southern Mississippi
She meets a man by the name of Charles Lee.
She introduces herself to him as "Lee Charles"
"What a coincidence." he says
And one week later they are married.
He wakes up one night six months down the line to find her staring at him in the oddest way.
When he says, "Honey, what's wrong?" she says,
"Oh nothing dear, except that tears are a stupid trick of God."
And by the time they find his body six weeks later
Well hell, she's a thousand miles away.
And I wonder
Baby why don't you cry? Baby why don't you,
Baby why don't you cry?
She runs from devils.
She runs from angels.
She runs from the ghost of her father and five different uncles.
Blinded by their memory, seared by their pain, she'd like to kill 'em all
Then kill 'em all again.
She don't think much about what she's done or the funny feelings that she feels.
No, she don't. To her it's just a condition she picked up as a child
A little thing she calls, "the wound that never heals", she calls it
"the wound that never heals" And I wonder; Baby why don't you cry?
Baby why don't you
Baby why don't you cry

Okay here we go. Rage songs out the wazoo. Yall are really going to wish you hadn't asked me to participate haha

Sorry the sound quality is absolute poo, I'm unsure why

#1:

Lyrics:

They said one too many vicious words to me
They raised one too many drops of mercury

I have died
I have died

My reckless rage
She walks around in my white skin, my dark eyes
She has six great wings and blood red eyes
Six great wings and blood red eyes

They took one too many carefree days from me
They took one too many pure black nights from me

I have died
I have died

My reckless rage
She walks around in my white skin, my dark eyes
She has six great wings and blood red eyes
Six great wings and blood red eyes

Lyrics:

Here she comes
She wears my dark haired head, she wants my skin
She takes my eyes, my hands, my blood within

Moloch gave her teeth
Sekhmet gave her sinew
Ululijarnaq gave her a hunting knife

A red burst
A white sky
A grey dust
A blast wave
Blackened land, oh, the blood red I know well
A red burst
A white sky
A grey dust
A blast wave
Blackened land, oh, the blood red I know well

Here it comes
This is my dark haired head, this is my skin
These are my eyes, my hands, my blood within

Moloch took my words
Sekhmet took my thoughts
And Ululijarnaq took all sense and reason

Grey storm cloud
Pitch black smoke
White phosphor
Red napalm
Dead scorched earth, oh, the blood red I know well
Grey storm cloud
Pitch black smoke
White phosphor
Red napalm
Dead scorched earth, oh, the blood red I know well

Lyrics:

Seams
Cordite scent dreams
Bullets kiss viscera and bone
My foolish heart did this

Hurt
Ionized bursts
Nuclear shadows bear witness
My reckless hands did this

I can't say no
I can't say no
I can't say no to the burst when sodium metal meets water
I can't say no
I can't say no
I can't say no to the fire when acid and diesel birth napalm

Night
Fractured red sky
Bombardier dropping her missiles
My selfish heart did this

Death
Above my head
Raven with black wings stretched, hungering
My cruel war crimes did this

I can't say no
I can't say no
I can't say no to the burst when sodium metal meets water
I can't say no
I can't say no
I can't say no to the fire when acid and diesel birth napalm

Lyrics:

Behold the red one
Far down she sleeps close to the spine

She wakens and quickens, reptilian and rasping
She speaks to me

Now wear red silk
Now take my hand
I'll make you immortal

Behold the red one
Stiffens and spreads her hood behind my eyes

Dressed in glittering rubellite scales, teeth and talons
She speaks to me

Now lay face down
Now I graft your wings
I'll make you immortal

Behold the red one
Six wings spread wide, catching the light

Perched upon the black rock, yellow gold eyes wild, hungering
She speaks to me

Now take flight
Now eclipse the sun
I've made you immortal

Again, sorry the sound quality is a pile of crap, I don't know why.

Here's Adrenalectomy. The word literally means removal of adrenaline glands. I was using it as basically a metaphor for censorship. When you're constantly telling people they can't say X, they can't say Y, they're not allowed to think critically, it might hurt someone's feelings...you're taking away a vital defense mechanism...like a social and emotional adrenalectomy. I can't even remember where I got that word, lol - I think I was just wasting time on reddit one night, happened to see it in a thread title and thought...yeah, I relate to that, not in a literal physical sense, but certainly what the social justice trend has done to people's minds and behavior. I wrote this after I saw a news article about a father in Germany who went to jail for the crime of calling his child by the wrong pronoun. I was not a typical pink and glitter girl child and that case stirred up some dark ragey emotions for me (hence the line about 'she's not a woman, she once touched a hunting knife').

I think this is rage song #5 lol.

Lyrics:

He rails against the gods like King Rene
They've taken his child to a place of illusions and lies

Iolanta languishes behind white walls
Oh they've cut out her eyes and they call it light

You can't say no
You'll rend this gossamer skin
Words are knives

You can't say no
You'll unleash napalm and sin
Words end lives

They strap him down beneath white tiles and fluoro lights
They've taken his teeth but he still has his rage

They tell her she's not a woman - she once touched a hunting knife
You have blood on your hands if you tell her otherwise

They carve her back with a red false eagle
They open her and they render her docile

You can't say no
You'll rend this gossamer skin
Words are knives

You can't say no
You'll unleash napalm and sin
Words end lives

They strap him down beneath white tiles and fluoro lights
They've taken his teeth but he still has his rage

Say no!

Hi all, recovering from gall bladder surgery.

don’t have much energy. Here’s a chorus if anyone wants it.

🙂

Chorus-

“Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

We need to be wanted that’s humanity’s norm.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.”

tried to write a verse and bridge but it was pretty bad and drivel-ish. Out of gas now.

have a great week!
