I wouldn't say it's redwood or cedar, as it's much denser and heavier like ,say, Brazilian mahogany. Your comments are not suggesting it...

Nothing scientific I'm afraid, it was given to him by his friend who said he had some spare mahogany planks stacked away in his shed.

My brother gave me 2 planks of what he believed to be mahogany. What do you think?

I use Renaissance wax for that. Nice light wax and works great to stop the tendency to bind.

I bought some of these a a couple of years ago ..But I didnt like using em much because they were grabbing and sticking in the slots on...
