Does it sound okay once it's plugged in? Some people I know turn off their amps when connecting or disconnecting instruments to avoid the crackle and pop.

When I don't have a tuner or are too lazy to use one, I tune from the "A" string.
1) "E" at the fifth fret to Open "A"
2) "C" at the fourth fret to Open "E"
3) "g" at the fifth fret to "C" at the...

Sometimes a complete disassembly, clean and reassemble will restore function to friction pegs. If you've already tried that and or it didn't/doesn't work, Gotoh UPT planetary geared tuners will save...

I wouldn't say Kamakas are inconsistent. The difference is way more subtle. When you try 3 Kamakas back to back they all will sound good but one will speak to you more that the others.
