The late Graham Caldersmith wrote extensively on classical guitar acoustics, much of which is relevant to ukuleles. He developed a family of different sized guitars and establishing soundhole size to...
I use smaller M4 threaded inserts. There is not so much tension on a ukulele that you need a M6/1/4" and the M4 inserts (and the bolts) are much lighter which I think helps. They are a bit harder to...
At the risk of gratuitous self-promotion, I included a chapter on building one of those Old Island style ukuleles in my book on building ukuleles and that chapter (along with a couple of others) is...
An hour later and it is there, as is The Mandolin - a history but only if I go to my Authors page on Amazon. There is supposedly two reviews on the Amazon page, but I can only see one (kindly written...
That is very odd, as I can't see it it all on the US Amazon site. It is on the AU Amazon site, but from a non-Amazon seller in the US. Thanks for looking.
Amazon have stopped ordering books to focus on food and stuff, so The Ukulele and my previous book on the history of the mandolin have disappeared from Amazon. And this a month after a fairly...
I am glad it worked out. Full credit to Ken who did it first. Always interested in seeing ukuleles that have come out of the book. If anyone who bought the book from Amazon feels inspired enough, a...
Huon is a heavy softwood, around the same weight as mahogany. It still dents, so you do have to be careful. The sound is bright and punchy and well balanced. Aqila Red strings with a low G. I like...
A new tenor ukulele with a Huon pine body, Australian Red cedar neck (14 frets to the body), Indian rosewood fretboard with gidgee head overlay and bridge. Tortoise celluloid binding and rosette with...
For frets I use a fret file to get most of the rounded shape (leaving a slight flat top on the frets), then 400, 600 and 1200 grit wet and dry paper (used dry) used along and across the fretboard....
i rather like that
It is the same on Amazon Australia at the moment. Amazon are supplied by the distributor in Chicago and I suspect the non- American Amazon sites get the books supplied from the US in some way. I...
Instructions for downloading the plans are at the bottom of page 5 (and a couple of other places through the book), but use lower case.
Cheers
19 November, which is today here but tomorrow in most of the rest of the world, is the official release date of The Ukulele - an illustrated workshop manual. Those kind folks who have pre-ordered...
As I am sure you have figured out by now, always check the run-out direction and hit the tape with a hot air gun to soften the glue.
If the tearout is too deep to completely sand out, some dust...
Blatantly misleading advertising I would think. I just knew someone would find a typo that I and several other people had missed. Where in the ePub?
The first copies The Ukulele have arrived from the printer and are now available, at least in Australia, to anyone who would like to purchase a copy. Go to www.mcdonaldstrings.com/ukulelebook.html to...
Epoxy is used for laminating carbon fibre tow to braces, but I have never come across anyone using epoxy to glue braces directly to soundboards or backs (or at least anyone who admits to doing it).
I hang them up in the workshop as a reminder not to stuff up next time. I feel guilty letting the not-right ones out into the world for folks to see.
For celluloid and ABS bindings I use Weldon 16, which is a solvent glue used in the acrylic/perspex industry. A solvent glue that sticks well to wood. One disadvantage is that when gluing thin ABS...
I have cancelled the Kickstarter project, as it was never going to make the target. Thanks to all those who supported the project. The ePub version will be available soon and I will do a small,...
I did all the sums on getting the print run done and mailing out those copies pre-ordered through Kickstarter and the Kickstarter total is what that would have cost. I will likely do a smaller...
Kickstarter is an 'all-or-nothing' fundraiser. If the target is not reached it won't cost you anything. At the moment it is looking unlikely to reach the target, so I am looking at a Plan B 8-)

mostly certainly!
