Hi,
Thanks for posting on the walnut build. I have a customer requesting I build a concert taropatch with some fiddleback walnut b&s a d spruce top. The only problem is I’ve never built one yet and...
Eureka! I’ll never have to buy another slot head jig again!
I went out on a branch on this one.
Thanks merlin666,
I’m not even sure she would like playing one. Although, I like the idea of going up to the next size
with the taropatch. I’ve only built one 8 string tenor so far, so I have a...
I have a client requesting a custom soprano 8 string ukulele build. I have never even seen an 8 string soprano let alone to try an build one. The challenge sounds interesting but, probably not...
Thank you for the sound advice. After posting this question I did some more research and found a number of ways to address this but, I like the approach you suggested best.
Quick question on installing frets after inlaying (mop). Will the fret barbs crack the shell inlay when installing the frets? If so, are the shell inlays clearances from the fret slot first, how?...
I’ve read a bit regarding the us of CF to reinforce necks but it just so happens I have a good amount of Ipe stashed away and wonder what any builders thoughts are on using it instead of CF?
I scored some nice quarter sawn hemlock and used it for the soundboard on my first soprano (which I swore I’d never lower myself to play) but, I love the sound so much I can’t seem to put the darn...
Sorry for beating a dead horse and, thank you everyone for sharing your expertise on this trivial aspect. With the help of the forum members I have a much better concept of what to do moving forward....
Hi Tony,
I had that neck, bridge alignment disaster happen on my first builds a couple of times too many. Drove me insane so I threw all my insanity into a master plan mold, solera Mcgyver...
Thanks again for the kind replies. The concept of minimum break angle is pretty clear (even for me) but, the question still begs - is there an optimal break angle to balance string tension, playing...
Haha, the day I can get to making a Hoffman style pinned nut in 30 mins will be more than welcome. I just think its a brilliant design. Just gotta get it a little more dialed in. For giggles n...
Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful information. A few more details, the nut I made is pinned with no slots and is a copycat of Jerry Hoffman’s pinned style nut. It is 3/16” thick. The string...
I have been doing some reading on string break angle at the saddle of my first soprano project and have a question as to the proper break angle at the nut and hoping to for some help.
The neck...
Thanks for the posting Greenscoe.
I have been working on an experimental tenor project and am nearing the end with making the nut and bridge/saddle. My top is spruce and has a 25’ radius and is...
Thanks for the replies. Getting frustrated with figuring out how to use this message board. So gluing the fretboard tongue without removing finish appears to be ok. The original bridge idea is...
Another newbie bone head question:
When building with a bolt on neck and a string through bridge, can the finish on the box be left on under the area under the bridge and fingerboard extension ?
Speaking of fretboards got me doing some measurements on different templates. One from Stewmac and one from Waldron. It occurs to me now (a bit too late) why some of my builds don’t sound the same!...
If Bruko can do it, then maybe I can too? I’ll post along the way. Thanks for the encouragement.
Lol! I’ll get some sheet metal tools from Harbor Freight!
Loved watching this! Makes me want to do that when I grow up. But then, just remembered I’m already 56! Oh well, back to the shed! Thanks for sharing Ken.
That makes two of us! Lol.. This is going to be a bit of trial and error regarding thickness. I did get a few tips from the folks at Bruko Ukuleles’s. Their process uses a heat press of some sort...
I think your comparing apples to oranges here. I’m not talking about laminating. The aluminum forms would for bending solid wood in a heat press. And apologies if I wasn’t being clear.
