No luck on the Compass Rose for 2020. Maybe 2021 will be luckier. I did get a Kiwaya KTS-7 soprano and I’m playing it at least once a month. Going for at least twice a month in 2021.
Every uke sounds different, even ones of the same model.
I would have kept the better looking one. They both sounded fine.
I remember this thread from 8 years ago and all the great people that were posting back then. Collings is done with ukes but the Kamakas are better than ever now in my opinion.
I miss Dirk from Southcoast. He was a generous and extremely wise person who was always a pleasure to talk with; and he had the best ukulele strings.
Dirk recommended gCEA for concert sizes, fBbDG...
A one and only forever uke on the first purchase is a long shot indeed. If it was a Martin 5K soprano I could see that happening.
I used to have a lot of ukes when it was my primary instrument for a two-year period. Then I got into mandolin, back to guitar, electric guitar, and even a bass.
I got rid of all my ukes but...
Yes, I did have to pay customs duty that was quite a surprise to me. I got a bill from FedEx about three weeks later. I did not pay sales tax but I did pay for shipping. So there was definitely a...
I had to buy my Kiwaya soprano from the UK. I bought a KTS-7 from Matt Stead at The Uke Room. I received it in 5 days!
Aqula has a uke string set tuned in 5ths for concert ukulele. They work on tenors too. I think its a fun change of pace, especially if you have an extra concert ukulele lying around.
Thanks for sharing this gorgeous instrument. I would love to own one of your ukes some day.
I had a Ken Timms, a 1920s Martin Style O, and now have a Kiwaya KTS-7. The Timms was unbelievably loud, the 1920s Martin had the mojo, and the Kiwaya KTS-7 is a thing of beauty.
I wish I had...
Talking to Mim about ukes is always a good idea.
I recently received a $54 bill from FedEx for import duties for a Kiwaya KTS-7 I bought from the UK. It was the first time I’ve purchased from abroad but I just couldn’t find this ukulele in the US. ...
You’re in Mike’s town. He’s a great guy and I had one of his tenors that I gifted to a good friend.
A better baritone uke? But before that I would try different strings and alternate tunings.
Fun question. I actually did get rid of all my ukes and just restarted with a Kiwaya KTS-7 soprano.
If I could have one I had before it would be a Compass Rose Tenor Jumbo by the legendary Rick...
I recommend looking at Pohaku ukuleles for this.
Sarah is from Alabama.
Hi Steve, I’ve had every size uke starting with a soprano and settling into tenors for a few years. Then I lost interest after moving away from my favorite ukulele group in Kansas City and stopped...
+1 for the Kiwaya KTC-1. It was one of my first ukes and it had the magic.
My favorites were the Aquila’s and the Fremont Blacklines because they sounded the sweetest to me. I think your assessment of each string set was spot on and they all sounded good because you have a...
I just ordered a couple of soprano sets and a Fremont Soloist Low G from Strings by Mail. I like that reorders will be easy for exactly what I like.
Stunning! Another masterpiece from Dave. Congratulations!
