    Banjo Uke Questions

I mostly use mine for strumming older jazzy stuff and clawhammer. Fingerstyle Celtic music also sounds great, and I’m working on some tunes from Fred Sokolow’s fingerstyle Ragtime book which sound great on banjo uke, imo.

    Simple songs to teach teenagers?

Thank you for the replies! Unfortunately, there won’t really be time to get input from the kids and adjust to anything— I’ll have literally one session of an hour or two. Should have been more clear in my post. This is a group of kids coming from a nearby town to a craft/music/dance school (for...

    Simple songs to teach teenagers?

Hello, I have mostly been a lurker on the forums, but hope those of you who work with young people can help a player out… I’m helping with a couple of experiential learning events soon where we will put ukes in the hands of middle and high schoolers who presumably haven’t played before. The...

Low G Unwound low G for concert Flea?

Does anyone have a suggestion for an unwound low g string that will fit on a concert Flea (plastic fretboard)? I have an Oasis set and some Aquila reds, but the low g is too fat to fit in the slot at the bridge. I thought the nut would be the problem, but they won’t even go into the bridge slot...

    Parlor guitar search

Yes, I have found a 15 year-old Seagull Coastline Grand! It has a little road wear but plays and sounds just fine. I think it will be plenty of guitar for my modest needs. I’m planning to donate my Alvarez and my first guitar— a super basic Yamaha classical— to our local Junior Appalachian...

    Parlor guitar search

Thanks all for the suggestions! I've looked at the Martin 000jr and Taylor mini, and those are good options toward the upper end of what I'd like to spend, but I'm still hoping to find a cedar top. Getting back to guitar will be a less serious pursuit than getting better at playing ukulele, so...

    Parlor guitar search

I’m a longtime lurker in the uke section, but this is my first post. I’m searching for a parlor-sized guitar at a moderate price, mostly for fingerstyle and some folky strumming/picking. I have an Alvarez Yairi dreadnaught that was probably never the right guitar for me, but after a long time...

    Claw Hammer, need help

I second the above advice to keep the claw rigid, and keep working on that decisive downward strike motion rather than any unfurling or flicking motion. Also, when you strike the A string with the back of your nail, your thumb comes to rest on the G string in that same motion. This Cathy Fink...
