    my ukulele progress

I drove to the Inland Empire in my wife's car and we drove over 90 the whole way because that's what the flow of traffic dictated. There's no way I could do that in my old jeep. If I were to visit you, I'd have to take route 66 across New Mexico and Arizona and when I hit Barstow, the freeway...

    my ukulele progress

On an unrelated note, farming looks too hard. Around here fresh basil is expensive. I looked into making my own. The first step is easy enough. You just take a sprig of basil and put it in water 'til it forms roots. Then you plant that. But then you have to pinch off leaves so that the...

    my ukulele progress

I don't know which camp I am in. I certainly am strategically polite but I don't know if I'd be impolite if violence and weapons weren't part of the equation. I don't think I would, but who amongst us thinks they would devolve without a superego or an authority forcing our behavior.

    my ukulele progress

I live in the old Wild West, so same thing here. Although I will say that I take perverse pleasure in being sedulous about speed limits, stop signs, and traffic lights...even though I know it drivers crazy. That reminds me of my favorite theory of law enforcement. I think we should double the...

    my ukulele progress

I noticed a difference in listening patterns today. When I was growing up we mowed lawns so that we could buy the year's album when it dropped. And then we lived on that music. I am thinking of Queen's Jazz. Younger people have access to everything and, because of that, they are expert in...

    Strumming with the thumb

Returning to the central question of the thread: no, the thumb isn't essential. But what is essential is progressing. Once you learn something, the next thing is exponentially easier to learn. Therefore, do learn the thumb, then the index finger, then PIMA finger picking, then stretchy...

Sound signature differences of Acacia vs Mahogany vs Spruce top + Rosewood sides?

Another unappreciated variable in this equation is the personality of the player. When I strum 0222 on a sycamore uke versus a spruce versus koa, do you know what I hear? GΔ7. They all sound pretty much the same. However, for other people the nuances are earth-shattering. So you really need...

    Strumming with the thumb

I too do not like using the thumb for downstrokes. It seems really awkward. I use a loose finger pistol when strumming. My index finger sticks out in case I need to pick individual notes and the middle and ring fingers strike the downstroke while the thumb, or even the knuckle of the thumb...

    my ukulele progress

I like the Smokytones. I was driving on route 38 which connects mountain resorts like Big Bear Lake to the flatlands of Redlands. I drove through the city of Mentone and I saw a billboard for the Mentones which apparently was an a capella group probably doing gigs at places like the VFW or the...

Low G How do you feel about this chord progression? (And the strumming patterns I've chosen.)

The only priority is success. You can play A and A minor together as long as it produces the sound you want. Usually pairing the flat 3rd of the minor with the third of the major creates dissonance, but if they're far enough apart no one will notice. You're the boss; you can do what you want...

Learning the ukulele when you don't like most music written for it?

I feel this. Back in the day I was using all my time playing Unreal Tournament and Football games...and not completing my PhD. I had to just throw away the games and get rid of television. Once I did that, I found that there was a huge hole in my life and I had several hours to burn during...

    my ukulele progress

I have been playing with some modes and found it to be quite an aufschlussreich. I was starting with the first 4 triplets of "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring" just to get a motive going. I did transpose it to E because that's my key. But here is the Augenöffnungs Erlebnis part (I'm using German...

Low G How do you feel about this chord progression? (And the strumming patterns I've chosen.)

It sounds more like the key of F, although in that key the G's are usually minor. However, forget about keys as you said. Music theory is supposed to be descriptive and not proscriptive. Since you're progressing up the fretboard, there is F chord (10 9 8 8) that might bring some resolution.

Exhausting is right! When arrived home at midnight, my wife told me that she had made a vet appt. for one of the cats at 7 a.m. and I had to do the driving because she would be too tired (BTW I heard her going to bed at 4 a.m.). I got up shortly thereafter with the intention of squeezing in...

Learning the ukulele when you don't like most music written for it?

I feel a lot of sympathy with the OP because I too think ukulele music sucks. So much of it is elevator music. My solution is not to play it. Being a bit older, I grew up on Neo-Classical metal and I merely take some of the key concepts from that genre and make my own music. I use the usual...

    A uke I’ve never seen

my wife misguidedly gave me a whammy bar for my uke. Just the bar. Not a tremolo system or anything else. I have seen some people mimic the effect my depressing their strings above the nut or is it below the nut (you never can tell with uke terminology. On the headstock side of the nut.

    Vamping

I don't have any formulae for vamping but what I do is find a progression like a I IV V or a II V I and find a place on the fretboard where the chords are similar and don't require a lot of movement. Then I'll add a dim7 into the mix. Then I have my four beat vamp.

    Picked It Up Today

I tried the mandolin but found the chords too stretchy for my fingers. The ukulele is much more comfortable and amenable to daily progress. I hope you realize the same thing and enjoy yourself.

Where Are You Currently In Your Uke Buying/Selling

I voted and am stable. I have 3 ukes which cost the majority of $10000 and I am now content and standing pat. I also have a tenor guitar and a cigar box guitar tuned GCEA, but I don't play them much; I merely got them to fulfill a niche. Now my energy is focused on developing my skills.

    my ukulele progress

ugh. Things get worse and worse. I used the last of my wife's breakfast grains and had to buy another 25 pound bag. that's obviously a $50+ purchase. It lasts for quite a while but it is always a bit painful. moreover, I had to cook more. I had a bag of lamb steaks for my wife's protein...
